Sorry guys, It looks like several of the streaming platform graphics in the video are wrong. Gundam is on crunchyroll, not HiDive Bocchi the rock is on crunchyroll not Netflix Eminence In Shadow is on HiDive, not crunchyroll Raven of the Inner Palace is in Crunchyroll, not HiDive
The first episode of Eminence in Shadow comes from the fourth volume of the light novel. Wired place to start, but most of the episode is not anime original.
Geoff I just wanted to let you know about "Rencarnated as a Sword". You know how your "No Guns Life video has Gun Dad? Meet Blade Dad. Yes, I am 100% serious. Fran don't need no FBI because she has a IMMORTAL. BODYGUARD. FATHER. By the end of it all you will want to protect your lovable, little, cat-girl daughter-ru. So look forward to that.
Something I've noticed people don't mention very often about the Sword Isekai is its environmental design. It doesn't really end up affecting the story, but I'm so glad to see the background artists put actual effort into making a world that isn't just the Forgotten Realms version 387. Seeing the weird coral structures in that rocky area during the carriage scene, or the purple clumps of blight in the forest, just add a little extra flavour to make the setting feel like a genuinely different world. Also, it was genuinely cathartic to see a starting town that wasn't copied over from KonoSuba or whatever anime invented that stupid red-roofed, river-bisected, unoriginal plains dwelling.
True. I noticed immediately that the town wasn't generic Isekai village, and loved the weird otherworldly landscapes. The effort put into the world design makes me hopeful that, now that they've all but skipped past the first 200 pages of set up, instead of just blitzing through to all the hype fights, they're planning to start showing us what really makes the LN shine.
@@nyon7209 I assume they probably just skipped the start so that we could get to Fran ASAP. They seem to have slowed down the pace after she was introduced, although I hope we get to see Jean before the anime concludes.
I'm really excited to see what they do with Fran specifically. Cute girls are a dime a dozen, but Fran has no fear and a taste for brutality. Combined with her only friend being a weapon of mass destruction, and the question of why black cats don't evolve (or maybe more interestingly, why there is no known historical record of such a thing, as if it has been concealed). That said, im giving a 90% chance of being disappointed on that front.
@@nyon7209 Sounds like a good choice, overall, as the sword flying around by itself chopping everything up kinda of undercuts the whole thing about what makes the show a bit original. After all, what's the point of having the protagonist be an inanimate object, when he's rather animate, and just doing the standard chopping stuff up to get even more OP very fast because of the cool learning skill he has thing, that is used in, well, pretty much every mid-tier Isekai?
List of anime, because Geoff likes to be a clever lad and use meme titles instead: #10 Mobile Fighter L Gundam 4:42 #9 Do it yourself 7:38 #8 Urusei Yatsura 10:09 #7 Blue Lock 12:43 #6 Bocchi The Rock 14:48 #5 Reincarnated as a Sword 16:43 #4 The Eminence in Shadow 19:27 #3 Raven of the Inner Palace 22:19 #2 Akiba Maid War 24:21 #1 Chainsaw Man 26:31
It's Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch from Mercury, not Mobile Fighter L Gundam. "Mobile Fighter L Gundam" *is* the meme title Geoff gave it, because the joke is the story is like Mobile Fighter G Gundam but with lesbians, hence the "L".
Okay. So. Reincarnated as a Sword is possibly the most adorable story I’ve read in years. The relationship between the two is adorable, and min-maxed build is just a setup for Fran getting curry. A lot of curry. All the curry.
Initially I couldn't see where all the hype is coming from. And I still think the show is mostly run of the mill but at least entertaining enough to watch. But after the first 3 episodes I have to admit that I can see where some of the hype is coming from. I mean, Fran is like Renge from Non Non Biyori if you gave her a big fucking sword instead of her recorder...
I knew I could count on Geoff to be one of the few guys on TH-cam to actually acknowledge and hype up Iruma-kun's third season. So excited for this arc, I've not read the manga to avoid spoilers but from what people are saying it's gonna be a hype time.
What I like about Blue Lock is that it's NOT a complete 180 of your typical sports anime, because it very much still encourages teamwork and good relationships with your teammates on and off the pitch. Hell the ''partner duo'' in this one is easily up there with Hinata and Kageyama. But it's main focus is independence, and personal ambition, and not being willing to be tied down by anything. It's actually a really good message, having friends and making personal connections but not letting them define you because those relationships can end at any moment, and that's reflected in the way the teams are constantly changing.
I always find it so funny during a match how Isagi is telling people to fuck off and calling them assholes and then once they're off the pitch he basically goes back to normal like "GG, you guys wanna grab lunch"
@@sonofagun4125 Isagi is just one of the sweetest, kindest boys off pitch. But once he's on pitch, he's basically a deranged murder soccer psycho. It's hilarious and I love it every time
While I suspect you're probably either talking about Bachira-Isagi or Isagi-Rin when you say "partner duo", I will instead willfully assume you are talking about the hilariously dramatic yet exceedingly compelling Nagi-Reo relationship. I've gotten, like, 5 separate people into Blue Lock just from telling them about how those two have the most dramatic 'break up' arcs ever, and that the arc goes on for OVER A HUNDRED CHAPTERS. It's glorious.
I played college soccer so I have some insight that I think might be interesting. I think the main difference is that this is producing professional athelets where as most sports anime is friends playing high school. At least in for me, high school was my fun team where I could try stuff out and hand out with friends. My travel team was when I got serious about getting college recruiters to look at me. This show is about trying to produce the results professionally so I do actually like the cut throatness of it. While it wasnt this bad, when college recruiters were present there was a change in how we played as a team where you did act more selfishly while trying to stand out. Im excited to see where it goes.
SPOILER WARNING 22:08 part is actually NOT an anime original but instead put in the middle of volume 4 of the light novel (not adapted into manga yet but will probably be in the next month or 2). The anime actually did a good job with this scene to set up the things thats gonna happen in the future, as the light novel introduced this scene and the character OUTTA NOWHERE and then right after switched its ENTIRE GENRE from a isekai to post-apocalpytic monster-survival reverse-isekai shit, with the girl shown from the start being an important plot point. This series is batshit insane and I fuckin love it.
As someone who actually watched the entirety of the original Urusei Yatsura, I can say that the reboot not only looks gorgeous, but it appears to have tightened up the writing for the early episodes as well.
It is very pretty. I didnt laugh once in the first episode and I felt like I was gonna get whiplash with the pace of delivery. Imo it shows it's age in its jokes but hey for ppl who loved it I'm happy they get a really pretty version of it
Okay, so I had a hard time interpreting that section of the video. Are they straight up redoing Urusei Yatsura? And, if so, should I bother watching original? (keep in mind, due to eye problems, I pretty much cast watch anything that isn't dubbed unless I put forth the monumental effort to properly learn Japanese, which would be even more difficult since as yet I've not found a single course that doesn't heavily emphasize kanji, which as I've mentioned, would be nearly worthless to me, I'm not quite blind yet, but I'm not far off and it could happen any day)
Out of the MANY great anime this season, Urusei Yatsura is the one that had me most excited! The first episode did NOT disappoint in the slightest! I'm an old school fan through and through, and I'm so glad they did the original justice! That hint of the original's theme song when Lum showed up had me grinning from ear to ear, goosebumps on my arms as the nostalgia coursed through my body like Lum's electric shock itself!! Ahh... Lum. The progenitor of all lust-worthy Waifu's ever since!!
I think it will pass over a lot of smaller stories for the more impactful ones, so the "Lum goes away" episode will probably be the last one of the first half.
Bocchi the rock is not what I expected to enjoy this season, but it's definitely very quickly become my favourite one. Everything about it from the music, to its comedic timings and feels are absolutely on point. If anyone sees this, please do go give it a watch.
I'm grateful for Yazy's gunpoint intervention on account of the Gundam series. I would not have watched Witch From Mercury if not for her constant reiteration of the series' strengths, and holy fuck, I am at the end of the first episode and already blown away.
By the "first episode" do you mean the first episode or episode 1? 'Cause technically episode 1 is the second episode of the show, since there was a Prologue episode released a few months before the actual show started. If you haven't seen the prologue you really should, by the way, since while episode 1 functions well enough without it episode 2 and onward start to build more heavily on elements introduced in it.

The intro premise of “I’m the Villainess” sorta just wrapped up as of episode 4, and it was awesome. I have no idea what the other 8 or so episodes are going to be about but I am very excited to see.
Weird, I thought episode 4 was pretty lackluster, in particular the second half. Felt like they skipped a bunch of content to get to the next arc. Kind of a disservice to the characters tbh
Seriously, I'd gotten a little spoiled with that scene, but I thought it was going to be the CLIMAX of the entire story. Kinda wish they'd taken a little more time with the whole arc, but I'm also looking forward to what comes next.
It’s nice that the romantic leads have clear feelings for each other and are engaged by episode 4 instead of having to wait seasons just for them to hold hands and misunderstand an admission of love for the upteenth time. I have been on an Otome Isekai kick lately and this series is refreshingly paced compared to similar anime.
@@DarthLego46 See this is why I’m excited. Yeah its a little weird they rushed it so quickly, but now we have plenty of time to watch them fall in love (there’s a reason Horimiya is in my top 10 favorite anime) . I’m also very curious about what the protagonist girl’s whole angle in this is. Is she actually nice? Is she dead set on becoming empress? Is she also a reincarnation? How much does she know?
@@lfr8666 I’m pretty sure the rest of the season after fmc steals the holy sword is anime original content. None of which would ever make sense. Like seriously, the fmc is effectively the future queen after her shounen as fuck “I’m a take that sword strike to the gut and steal it!” scene. Did that friggen dirty too. I can’t think of too many anime where the female lead literally takes a sword strike to the stomach to protect someone they love. Even if it wasn’t effective on humans the whole process of painful and super intense.
Well that's Gundam's own fault as well because they just want to retread older Gundam universes instead of making new ones to feed older fans and bring in new ones.
@@sonfoku73 i am fairly confident that IBO was a new universe. It's just OAVs that are mostly UC. It's just that even with new universes it's a very intimidating name. Because "WATCH AKIBA MAID WAR," is already out in full force, I want to support another show that needs to be seen. WATCH BOCCHI THE ROCK! This show balances comedy and realism absolutely perfectly, the MC's VA's performance is nothing short of brilliant, the chemistry between the girls is infectious, and the MUSIC ABSOLUTELY SLAPS! The OP and ED are absolutely amazing and I cannot stop replaying them. Seriously, BOCCHI THE ROCK WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH AND GET YOU EMOTIONAL all in the span of 1 episode.
Bocchi is the best show of the season for me, never saw that one coming. CGDCT is not my favorite genre but DIY is pretty decent as well. CSM is my largest disappointment, dropped after 1,5 episodes and hope I’ll be able to watch it during a binge session in January.
This Gundum anime is an amazing adaptation to get people into the universe. It definitely has a new gen feel to it and knows its target audience with this one.
@@cinnamon5675 why are you listening to one bad comment out of the hundreds of comments saying its good? Don’t do that to yourself. The new Urusei Yatsura is SO GOOD. I hope you'll make a "What's in the OP?" for it. From the clever Space Invaders reference to Lum's iconic dance, Studio Colorido did a great job making the OP. David Production's animation also did great by reviving the series for a new audience, without compromising the charm of the manga. It deserves more praise, especially for how influential the original anime was for the animanga industry and the community as a whole.
A major agreement on Raven of the Inner Palace. The thing that really got me about the 3 episodes that I saw is the authenticity. A bit of background, but I am someone Chinese born. I know the language, watched bits and pieces of Chinese Imperial Palace Dramas like Huan Zhu Gege in my childhood, reads Chinese webnovels even now, of which some have included palace drama in part or whole, and even part time translated a few webnovels at that, and as someone with that experience and understanding, I can authoritively say that the atmosphere of Raven is one that could have come right off of a Chinese palace drama, just with more magic. In fact, one of the first things that got my attention is that people addresses the imperial consort by Niangniang, which is in fact absolutely the correct term of address for the Empress or any of the imperial consorts. The fact that inner palace (or literally "harem", as they share the same actual term) can get absolutely cutthroat in its politics. The authenticity is amazing, and heck, if I didn't know any better, I'd say that some Japanese producer had copied a genuine Chinese Palace Drama, turned it anime style, and then redubbed it. It's like if some Chinese studio produced an authentic Japanese Samurai flick or if some American Studio produced a genuine version of Journey to the West, the Three Kingdoms, or one of Jin Yong's Wuxia novels. Just absolutely amazing and remarkable.
Akiba Maid War sounds perfect for my dad, he hasn't trusted my recommendations since School-Live so hopefully the cute maids will be enough to make him forget so I can hear that sweet sweet "WHAT THE FUCK?!" from across the house. :)
Man, this season is a heavy hitter. I was already excited for Bleach TYBW, Chainsaw Man, Spy X Family, and Mob Psycho 100 III , and they all delivered exceeding my expectations. The Eminence of Shadow was surprisingly good. And you have totally sold me on Blue Lock and Boichi-kun anime. So yeah, this is definitely going to be best Anime season for now.
So glad you included "Raven of the Inner Palace." I've been obsessed from episode one, and I've already bought the light novels. There's a lot I'm excited about this season, but as you said, it's really a breath of fresh air in terms of the fantasy offerings we've gotten in recent years.
Yes I think this is my favourite of the season! I don’t like that Geoff made it seem like the emperor is the main character though, because the raven consort herself, Shouxue, is, and it’s just as much a journey about her as it is solving the mysteries of the inner palace. He made Shouxue sound like she’s the love interest ;v; no the EMPEROR is the love interest, Shouxue is the MC!
I've never watched Gundam because "I don't like mecha" but episode 0 got me so fast it's almost funny. For anyone that is even remotely curious about Witch from Mercury or the franchise to at least watch the prologue, I've been enjoying the episodes so far a lot.
For me it just been a long time since i last watch any gundam but i told myself, let's just have a look at the prologue and the setting intrigue me enough that i watched the rest of the episodes.
I’ve truly been enjoying Reincarnated as a Sword. Not the best but Fran’s reactions are so incredibly cute and terrifying And I’ve gotta love welcome to demon school.
Yes! Fran is a perfect combination of cute and badass. I absolutely love her determination and slightly arrogant posture, whole still acting like child she is. Seeing her grow is pure bliss.
Man, "Eminence in Shadow" killed me. I am still laughing at the scene where he said "I once heard of a man who thought it would be possible to become stronger than a nuclear explosion" referencing himself as a stupid child. Like Bro, you don't get to quote 8 year old you as a great sage. But then he murdered the guy so no one lived to tell the tale of the cringe. This show is great. I also love how he doesn't really know the girls in his harem, he just pretends he knows them. Also for those who do not read the manga. They actually put the first episode of the show into the manga as a flashback. Only this time is adheres to the manga's logic. In the manga because there was not Magic in the real world he could not look like a spindly Japanese boy and still be strong. So they recreate the episode but instead of an unassuming highschooler who secretly fights at night he is a dude who looks like a brick shit -house who definitely street fights after school and everyone knows. Cid still acts like he no one knows he is strong insecrete but he looks like a Baki character.
@@thunderspark1536 Awesome, its a fun read. The show handles fights better but the manga handles the jokes in a way I prefer. All the flashbacks to Cid in the "real world" show him as a giant boulder trying to pretend to be a Japanese Child. They even added a chapter to the manga to explain how Cid looked normal in the anime episode.
I'm so grateful to you introducing "Raven from inner palace", since I believe it's one of the best anime this season, but very few people speak about this anime in my country. I'm japanese, and it seems that some japanese aren't used to those chinese atmosphere contained in the works, which is a shame.
CHAINSAW MAN! CHAINSAW MAN! CHAINSAW MAN! Thank god I can see so many other people appreciating this show & thank you for putting me on to it with your first video all that time ago. Good work as usual Geoff! :))
Well good for you. The huge amount of gore and the overall darkness of the series is a huge turn off for me. I'll stick to My Hero and Spy x Family instead.
When you said an eclectic mix of influences, I did NOT expect a reference to "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" to be on there! That's it. THAT is what sold me on Chainsaw Man.
You will not regret it. I held out forever because I thought the name was stupid. I was wrong to be a snob. It made me laugh. It made me cry. Sometimes it made me do both at the same time. I legit did not expect it to be what it was.
I honestly held off on Chainsaw Man because I thought it would be too much like Jujutsu Kaisen, which I like but have significant problems with. Then I saw Episode 1, decided it was legit and just finished binging the manga today. It actually has more of the problems I disliked JJK for, but I still like it.
Honestly the kindest thing I can say about Akiba Maid War is that I would not at all be surprised or ask any questions if the terminator maid from Black Lagoon showed up
I'm so glad you mentioned The Eminence in Shadow. It's a phantom thief themed isekai about a reverse chuunibyou thinks his harem is his larping squad and when they kill people it's just playing around. He thinks they all know everything's fake and he made it all up. But no. A reverse chuunibyou is when the chuuni thinks they're making stuff up, but it's all actually true. Kadokawa just announced a spin off anime for it. I anticipate they're expecting the anime to take off soon, since ep 1 & 2 was just the prologue. The setup pays off big later, so I'm hyped.
I am having a really weird experience with this anime in that I am just constantly going back and forth on whether it is good or not. The premise is really fun, but it seems like almost no time is actually spent on doing something funny with it, so the comedy isn't that great. Some of the characters are fun, but then it also spents barely anytime exploring them. Most of the cast just shows up, we don't even get the barest introduction who the girls of shadow garden are. It seems like the premise is build on making fun of the stereotype of the dark, edgy organisation fighting the actual bad guys behind the scenes and being let by the dark, edgy and supercool leaderguy. But then it also just plays that stereotype completely straight and 3/4 of an episode will just be a fight between the mc and one dude. And it's obvious who's going to win, but it just gets dragged out through the whole episode so the mc can spout some cringe-ass dialogue thinking he is being cool and edgy. If it's supposed to make fun of it, why is it played so straight? If the dialogue is intentionally cringy, why is so much time dedicated to the cringe? When the main character blows up a big chunk of a capital with the magical equivalent of an atomic bomb in order to kill one dude, is it supposed to be cool? Is the sheer absurdity of it supposed to be funny? I just don't really get the intention behind the thing. I keep watching, waiting for it to finally click, but I just don't think I get it so far. I had a genuine chuckle in the newest episode when the princess attacks him for his rejection. The bloodsplatter is a genuinely well timed punchline to that scene. But then the anime stops and has a bit of dialogue about how noone knows what's up with the bloodsplatter there and it feels like it's explaining the joke and kind of ruining it in the process. Does it just not translate well from the source material?
@@Amaror2 it called dry humour or something, basically its lot of reference jokes and expect the viewer to guess what happen next. how do i explain this...
@@si-level It's not though. I actually read the light novel now and the light novel is hilarious. It's just translated from the source material poorly. The light novel has a ton of parody, but it's all in in the thoughts and descriptions of the characters. The comedy comes from the dissonance between how people perceive Cid versus how he perceives himself. And the dissonance to how everyone else sees the world versus how Cid sees it. Most of that is gone in the anime. Apparently the manga added a bunch of visual jokes to compensate but the anime didn't. So they adopted a parody light novel and cut out most of the parody, which explains why it feels so weird. You can still see bits and pieces of the original intend but there's not enough of it there to fulfill its original purpose.
@@si-level That's a bit strange. I agree that the manga has more visual gags than the light novel, but the anime doesn't have those. It's just the light novel, but with less stuff in it. But hey, everyone has different tastes. I am glad you enjoy the anime.
Akiba Maid War really fits into a specific category that i like: _Cute girls in cute outfits_ *Commit atrocities or absolutely demolish each other* Also that ep1 gunfight has lived in my mind rent free
@@williamhuynh869 It isn't, though, as it is so over the top silly and fun. Just a girl who idealizes maid cafes as they exist in our world, except they are really more a Yakuza like situation.. And then action stupidity. So it is a bit of Madoka Magica situation for the main character, yet not for us. For us, it is just good fun.
Watched the first two episodes hoping it would get better, makes no sense to me, guess im not that much of a dork the "cute maids do stuff" is enough to be a plot for a story. Glad I'm not, yikes I can smell the body pillows from here.

I’ve been waiting for ages for Blue Lock so I hope it won’t disappoint. There’s so much good stuff this season that I didn’t even know where to start outside of the returnees and Chainsaw Man. I’ll feel so empty once this season is over lol
I usually don't watch the seasonal isekai unless it gains popularity for some reason, but I watched Reincarnated as a Sword and had a lot of fun with it. Theres something fun about watching a catgirl with a big sword thats really entertaining, and the animation in the fights is suprisingly good.
More than a married couple but not lovers is one of my favorite animes this season. I feel like it is way too underrated and more people should watch it.
other reason to watch Do It Yourself: the MC's full name is Yua Serufu. for more non-isekai fantasy stories we also have Legend of Mana, adapting a part of the game, and Management of a Novice Alchemist, another comfy CGDCT which is similar to the Atelier series and features badass best girl Ophelia (who is unfortunately not the MC).

"I love everything about this and also "woo-hoo, marriage" is what I'm ending all my texts to your dad in from now on." "People willfully destroying each other's futures is just called having siblings. But I like the twist where they're all in good shape. That's nothing like having siblings." "Hitori is my neurodivergent daughter and I will fight every hater in her TH-cam comments." "Oh right, the truck adventure genre!" "...what?" "They all die via trucks, right? And then they go on adventures. Anyway, Cat Girl Moses looks good." "I - I - what?!" "She's freeing her people. Like Moses." "This sounds like it'd be fun to watch with some wine and some Ren Fair people." "Make her a lasagna. THAT'S how you curry some favor. Also, I ship it." "This reminds me of your Aunt Judy." Hey geoff, just in case you haven't checked it out Dragon Quest: Adventures of Dai ends next week with episode 100. It is probably the most slept on anime i've personally witnessed in my lifetime in the West and absolutely deserves a shoutout for anyone that was a lover of saturday morning cartoons and classic adventure shows. Has character development that i've only seen equaled by berserk and being a dragon quest ip it of course gives off a strong dragonball vibe due to its akira toriyama artstyle inspiration.
Yeah, it has been an amazing adaptation, with beautiful animation and action, on top of a tight story, and its very impressive how well the power ups have aged, because they are based on technique and world building, rather that inner power or variations of that Personally, i really like the final boss concept, his transformations and powers feel so grounded, as they have plenty of links to other elements of the story, and his ultimate bullshit technique being just a solid combo, it feels so fresh when compared with the broken abilities final bosses tend to have, yet its as much of a bullshit ultimate broken power as your run-of-the-mill invincible powers
@@GinHindew110 exactly this. It's not like anything in the show is groundbreaking or deeply thought provoking. But it is a lot of fun and you can tell it was made by people that respect the source material. On top of that i again must stress how insanely good the character development is in this series; both for the heroes and the villains. There is no powerup that comes without a grounded and reasonable explanation, no decision a character makes that seems strange or out of character. There is not a single major (or for the majority of minor for that matter) character who we don't explicitely understand and we get to watch them grow and change as the series presses on; not just get stronger. This makes the series alone immensly enjoyable; even moreso if you are a fan of the games. So many references to iconic spells, abilities, and features of the games. The combo the final boss does that you mentioned in particular is the anime equivalent of final bosses usually getting multiple turns in the games; not to mention the standard jrpg trope of multiple forms a final boss will take. There's just so much to pick apart and dissect for fans of the franchise and is just a perfect blend of lighthearted fun, strong characters, and large scale adventures for the more casual viewer.
DQ: Dai is a cool anime but it definitely lives up to its Drag-on name. Should have easily been 60-70 eps max, tons of padding and inconsistent animation. Lots of good parts too and as a DQ series fan it’s been a pretty good watch overall
He knows full well that most of his audience has either heard about Chainsaw Man from other videos or will be hyped up about the idea of a shonen anime starring a man made of chainsaws.
Im really glad that reincarnated as a sword got so high, I really like the light novels, but I honestly think that the new gundam deserves a higher spot, I feel it's shaping up to be a top 5 contender for the season. Great vid tho!
Urusei Yatsura is such a hype show to me. Ataru and Lum are peak anime couple. Literally the most perfectly imperfect couple. My Master Has No Tail is a delightful show. The setting and time period is so underrated in stories. A time where the supernatural either has to adapt to a changing society or fade into myth is such an engaging concept. You see series like Kemono Jihen or Noragami where they’ve already adapted to modernization or other series where they cling to the past in small isolated bubbles like Natsume’s Book of Friends.
"Watch Akiba Maid War ESPECIALLY if you like Chainsaw Man" Great line. I am glad to see some of my favorite anime of this season also resonated with you. I was a little shocked, actually.
Oh and Sentai's streaming service HiDive is really getting some good stuff this season. I originally picked it up to watch the back catalog like Patlabor, but I am sticking around because of the new stuff. Back catalog stuff often is the BD version though, to be warned. I decided to watch Softenni, a funny little turn your brain off sort of sports show only to find out that the release I saw previously was the censored one...
I ended up taking the recommendation for More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers and I'm surprised how hooked I ended up being. I even binged the entire manga once I caught up with the anime.
@@mokisan it's fine, Witch From Mercury is a different continuity to the rest of Gundam. Iron Blooded Orphans and Turn A Gundam are supposed to be other good one-offs. For the rest, I recommend looking up a guide
@@mokisan crunchyroll youtube's channel has a video that explains the timeline very well. From that one, I suggest trying out the non-UC timeline first since it's usually an easier entry. I think the others could say the same.
I've been following Sword Isekai's manga for a while. It's pretty good - never really groundbreaking, but it's all the old tropes done well, and without anything particularly bad or frustrating. I've been looking forward to the anime since the beginning of the year.
I highly recommend checking out the source material for that series being the Light Novels. They are insanely good and WAY farther ahead of the manga adaptation.
That's exactly it. All the standard Fantasy tropes are there, the dwarf blacksmith, the hot adventuring guild receptionnist, goblins as first ennemies. But it's just really really well executed. The sword FEELS weighty, as opposed to some other shows where a sword looks like it weights 2 pounds. I read both the LN and manga, and it's also a faithful adaptation.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA, HOW MUCH I WAITED FOR THIS! Cause as soon as I've seen mob psycho 100 Season 3, I literally thought, "Man I want Mother's basement to talk/react about this"
HELP. Im searching for a specific Anime, so i ask around: May i describe it and you tell me if you know it? So the Start of the Anime has Young Male Alien and Young Human-Man meet, solve all Energy-Need forever ad move the giant Spaceship cause it wwas ''''parked wrong''''.
I second that for Akiba Maid War. I too, went in blind, just to find something to fill as a background anime filler while I was cooking and my food prep took longer since my focus was solely onto the anime. My goodness, I was hooked.
Hope you'll run similar sponsors in the future. This is the sort of influence the anime market needs in regards to promoting sustainable practice. Happy to toss some $$$ that way. Looking forward to doing more... significantly more of it in the future.
Based on the Episode 0, I don't think the Mecha Highschool is gonna be the focus for very long. Between the set up in the prologue and some of the things we saw in episodes one and two, I feel like we're gonna get the traditional Gundam War story sooner rather than later.
Yeah I really don't think the duels are going to be as much of a recurring plot point as the video suggests either, it's just a school rule, not a societal thing at all. My feeling is that *at most* it's going to be for the first 10 eps or so be school-based with more going on in the background and then things will deteriorate and it'll be about going to Earth and war and sadness.
Went into AKIBA MAID WAR blind on your recommendation and wasn't sure I was going to give it a second episode right up until that choice was taken from my forcibly. Thanks for the recommendation. I don't know what this show is but I'm Here for it.
So far I've only watched the first episodes of Bleach and Chainsaw man. I can't deal with waiting week by week so I'm going to wait for everything to build up a few episodes before I watch more. I know Chainsaw Man is the show stealing the limelight, but man, the first episode of Bleach was just terrific. I nearly OD'd on nostalgia and seeing all the old classic character brought back to life in the new, high budget continuation was just unbelievable. Golden Kamuy is very much on my list as well, as is Mob Psycho. Me Hero....I'll wait and see what people think of it. I can't remember a season this jam packed with my own personal favourites. Like, ever!
I'll be watching the new Mob Psycho 100, Gundam, Akiba Maid War, and Chainsaw Man. Also, HELL YEAH to the Pantheon shout-out. The first season ended recently and a second season is coming out. It's a great time to catch up.
I watched about 10 new anime first episodes, including most of the ones in this video, with a Discord group in an anime sampler. Akiba Maid war's first episode was so crazy! I wasn't sure WTF was happening and wasn't sure if I would want to watch more, but I might check out more of it since you said it's good, especially for Chainsaw Man fans. I also loved Blue Lock and Do It yourself was pretty cute and fun. Bocchi The Rock was fairly relatable and fun. I was the socially awkward, introverted musician in school. However, I did talk to people and people like my guitar playing/singing even though I wasn't all that great. I can relate with the main character's anxiety, although I'm better now than I was.
I am really enjoying Villainess Taming the Final Boss. It’s like anime Beauty and the Beast, except all of the unhealthy parts of the romance from that story have been excised. I also like how proactive and clever the protagonist is. You’d buy her as a villain in another timeline, but she’s using those traits to prevent war and keep people alive. She is also refreshingly honest and non-manipulative for someone with knowledge of future events. She is one of the few Isekai protagonists that have actually tried to explain to other characters that she is an Isekai protagonist.
Geoff's recommendations are the reason I have a HiDive account. Every season at least one of his picks is from there. Finally signed up for it to watch Call of the Night and did not regret it at all. Now looking at watching his other prior HiDive recommendations as well.
I don't think I need to mention it but chainsaw Man really did a amazing job of combining 3d CGI with 2d hand-drawn. Also Akiba maid war is straight up ridiculous not as much as Eminence in shadow but still. As for reincarnated as a sword, it has really beautiful aesthetics and do it yourself is pretty chill along with spy family and Mob psycho is as good as ever, Iruma is also doing quite well and the new villainess anime is surprisingly really good and last but not least Bleach is doing a fantastic job at doing what it's good at. Overall this season is far too overwhelming Edit: Just finished Blue Lock and gotta say it's freakin amazing.
Gotta second Geoff's rec for Pantheon. The finale just dropped and I'm dying to get to it. It's a really good family drama mixed with a tense Sci-fi story that feels like it's just around the corner based on Ken Liu's short stories. Animation takes a bit of getting used to though (it's like Invincible and Harley Quinn.)
Just watched the first Episode of Urusei Yatsura (2020) today and it's pretty good, at least in so far as it is a faithful adaptation of the original Anime and so that means it's very likely to get a lot better as it goes on. Also the OP and EP are really good. I also watched the first episode of Reincarnated as a Sword and that was great.
Me and a Buddy watched the first episode of Akiba Maid war and not gonna lie we died laughing our butts off from the opening scene to the ending fight and we Loved it. Pure insanity in the best way possible
Ay, you're the first large channel I've seen mention "Pantheon." It's so good! Probably my second favortite show Ive seen watched this year. More people need to watch it so AMC makes more of it and more things like it!
Wow, you mentioned the three new shoujo anime! Thanks! I am watching (and loving) Bibliophile Princess, I'm the Villainess, My Master Has No Tail and Delicious Party Pretty Cure
I can not express how much I love Bocchi and DIY. DIY is the comfy show and Bocchi is the comedy with some really good music tossed into the mix. Blue Lock has been really good to watch too, love how different it is from Haikyuu but in a good way though! Reincarnated as a sword has been my guilty pleasure, it's pretty brutal as well and I adore Fran. My Master has no Tail is also very enjoyable, I got hooked on the first episode. I have a seasonal anime problem and the ones I wish to get a second season keeps growing
I'm biased as someone who plays the game but I'm really excited for the Arknights anime. A fantastic free 2 play gacha with fantastic music and story and worldbuilding getting adapted and it looks really good. I've got high hopes for that one and it's out in 2ish weeks
i REALLY appreciate the clear and easy to read titles, the attempt to show where they can be watched in TEXT for each chapter, and the TEXT RECAP AT THE END. my aging ADHD ass thanks you deeply.
Thank you, Geoff, for reminding me that I have another season of Golden Kamuy to add to my ever-growing pile of anime to keep up with this season!! i haven't felt like this in years, and it's a great feeling!
Great list! I'm really happy you got My Master Has No Tail in the bonus section; it's really nice so far and that "foolish tanuki" is super adorable. I also completely agree on Maid War. It's one of those anime that feels so quintessentially Japanese right to its core, a combination of things that no other culture on Earth could ever come with, not even with a rough equivalent.
@@bobbenson6825 This is your sign to go watch it, like right away! Genuinely one of the greatest shows ever made. Hard to believe it's five years old, because I still think about it all the time.
"How Heavy Are The Dumbells You Lift?" is so fucking good too. Also, big fucking RIP to Takashashi. He dived into some waters to save people from a dangerous riptide, not unlike how Yugi jumped into save Joey actually, and he ended up not making it back.
I think this is the first ones to watch video where I'm already watching everything you've mentioned. I guess that means Geoff has trained me well and I already have the same level of discerning taste. And yes, you should absolutely be watching Akiba Maid War.

Sorry guys, It looks like several of the streaming platform graphics in the video are wrong.
Gundam is on crunchyroll, not HiDive
Bocchi the rock is on crunchyroll not Netflix
Eminence In Shadow is on HiDive, not crunchyroll
Raven of the Inner Palace is in Crunchyroll, not HiDive
Maybe you somehow travelled to a boring alternate dimension where the opposites are true?
Good to know!
The first episode of Eminence in Shadow comes from the fourth volume of the light novel. Wired place to start, but most of the episode is not anime original.

BODYGUARD.
FATHER.
By the end of it all you will want to protect your lovable, little, cat-girl daughter-ru.
So look forward to that.
Not to sound impatient but what Made in Abyss s2?
Yeah it has some super good critter designs too
List of anime, because Geoff likes to be a clever lad and use meme titles instead:

#9 Do it yourself 7:38
#8 Urusei Yatsura 10:09
#7 Blue Lock 12:43
#6 Bocchi The Rock 14:48

It's Witch From Mercury, not L Gundam.
I wish I'd seen this sooner...
Poor Golden Kamuy so underrated!

Okay. So. Reincarnated as a Sword is possibly the most adorable story I’ve read in years.
The relationship between the two is adorable, and min-maxed build is just a setup for Fran getting curry. A lot of curry. All the curry.
Fran really loves her curry!
All hail the Curry!
Is there ever enough curry?
And she is a cat, so bonus points from me
Initially I couldn't see where all the hype is coming from.
I stopped watching the show because the manga was that good 😩
@@Hades_Orkos The show is pretty good too. They really stepped up the animation this season.
I'm a manga reader and I'm sooo excited for this season! I liked Iruma-kun before but this was the arc that made me *love* it!
@@carolbaker2773 which is exactly where the current arc is at
SPOILER WARNING 22:08 part is actually NOT an anime original but instead put in the middle of volume 4 of the light novel (not adapted into manga yet but will probably be in the next month or 2).

PURE HYPE! ART AS ALWAYS LOOKS CRISP!
As someone who actually watched the entirety of the original Urusei Yatsura, I can say that the reboot not only looks gorgeous, but it appears to have tightened up the writing for the early episodes as well.
Ah, that’s good to hear. I never watched the original, so I might give this a try. Also, this anime NEEDS a full British dub.
I seriously can't wait for their concert!
@@SpudEater it was such a great episode:)

David Production's animation also did great by reviving the series for a new audience, without compromising the charm of the manga. It deserves more praise, especially for how influential the original anime was for the animanga industry and the community as a whole.

So, there IS a reboot out?😲
A major agreement on Raven of the Inner Palace.
Ah, School Live. I still remember getting my mind blown off after finishing that first episode.
🤣🤣🤣
Let us know his reaction lol
I hope this time your dad didn't involve his belt
You are Evil. And I really like that.
My mother also watched School live on my recommendation so it should be fun to do it again.
Welcome to the club.
For me it just been a long time since i last watch any gundam but i told myself, let's just have a look at the prologue and the setting intrigue me enough that i watched the rest of the episodes.
Bless you for adding a "where to watch" page, and a recap list. Makes it so much easier to find em all!
I’ve truly been enjoying Reincarnated as a Sword. Not the best but Fran’s reactions are so incredibly cute and terrifying
And I’ve gotta love welcome to demon school.
It is wholesome anime with are Protagonist sword is Father figure to Fran.
Hoo boy lemme tell you about the LN, that shit's fire
@@imprudentdev1503 I’ll probably end up reading it down the road. There’s clearly a lot lost in the adaptation and I’m a sucker for stat sheets
Yes!
Fran is a perfect combination of cute and badass.
I absolutely love her determination and slightly arrogant posture, whole still acting like child she is.
Seeing her grow is pure bliss.
Murderhobo and Sword Dad are so fun to watch. I'm up to date on the LN, Manga and Anime and I'm really impressed with the adaptation so far.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TALKING ABOUT AKIBA MAID WAR. This show is absolutely bonkers, and is probably destined to be the hidden gem of the season
Thank you for sharing information about it
Man, "Eminence in Shadow" killed me.
Damn, I gotta read the manga now
@@thunderspark1536 Awesome, its a fun read. The show handles fights better but the manga handles the jokes in a way I prefer. All the flashbacks to Cid in the "real world" show him as a giant boulder trying to pretend to be a Japanese Child. They even added a chapter to the manga to explain how Cid looked normal in the anime episode.
Dude I loved the show, it was such a ride.
I'm so grateful to you introducing "Raven from inner palace", since I believe it's one of the best anime this season, but very few people speak about this anime in my country. I'm japanese, and it seems that some japanese aren't used to those chinese atmosphere contained in the works, which is a shame.
It's a shame it isn't seeing wider exposure to audiences. It is a legitimately good anime.
Can't find it on hi dive. Region locked maybe?
CHAINSAW MAN! CHAINSAW MAN! CHAINSAW MAN! Thank god I can see so many other people appreciating this show & thank you for putting me on to it with your first video all that time ago. Good work as usual Geoff! :))
ayy Harley glad you also got put on by the same video lol
Well good for you. The huge amount of gore and the overall darkness of the series is a huge turn off for me. I'll stick to My Hero and Spy x Family instead.
When you said an eclectic mix of influences, I did NOT expect a reference to "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" to be on there! That's it. THAT is what sold me on Chainsaw Man.
Wait til you get to the sharknado bit
@@mothersbasement the sharknado bit is legitimately amazing
You will not regret it. I held out forever because I thought the name was stupid. I was wrong to be a snob.
It made me laugh. It made me cry. Sometimes it made me do both at the same time. I legit did not expect it to be what it was.
@@Not_Rui_ It totally is. Also, Beam is adorable as they come.
Honestly the kindest thing I can say about Akiba Maid War is that I would not at all be surprised or ask any questions if the terminator maid from Black Lagoon showed up
Would be one hell of a reference
@@Amaror2 tbh i read the LN and not find it funny, the manga and anime actually make me laugh
@@si-level That's a bit strange. I agree that the manga has more visual gags than the light novel, but the anime doesn't have those. It's just the light novel, but with less stuff in it. But hey, everyone has different tastes. I am glad you enjoy the anime.
So happy you mentioned *Golden Kamuy* and *Iruma kun*😊Not many ppl are talking about them. This season is definitely bomb
Akiba Maid War really fits into a specific category that i like:
_Cute girls in cute outfits_ *Commit atrocities or absolutely demolish each other*
Also that ep1 gunfight has lived in my mind rent free
you probably watch a lot of magical girl anime like me, then, too
@@NikkiTheViolist I'm hearing Madoka Magica from these comments
@@williamhuynh869 It isn't, though, as it is so over the top silly and fun. Just a girl who idealizes maid cafes as they exist in our world, except they are really more a Yakuza like situation.. And then action stupidity. So it is a bit of Madoka Magica situation for the main character, yet not for us. For us, it is just good fun.
It's a masterful cross between Blend-S and Black Lagoon, and I needed it in my life lol
Watched the first two episodes hoping it would get better, makes no sense to me, guess im not that much of a dork the "cute maids do stuff" is enough to be a plot for a story. Glad I'm not, yikes I can smell the body pillows from here.
It's hard for any show to get much attention in a season when Chainsawman is airing, but Akiba Maid War won the "Best first episode" contest in my opinion!
IMPORTANT: Animator-Unions are a Thing now. I know that thx to the aptly-named Channel "Positive Leftist News" that aims to counter the (equally epic) more cynical News-TH-camrs like Some-More-News. It means to batle the entire Concept of Doomscrolling and aid said Channel so Positive&Neagtive are balanced.
I'll give best first episode to Gundam episode 0 but idk if that counts lmao

Don't care about anyone says but Mob Psycho III is the best one in this season

Man this fall has been a banger! I'm currently on the new bleach, spy x family, mob psycho season 3, and chainsaw man.
I'm happy you mentioned I'm The Villainess, So I'm Taming The Final Boss! I would not have noticed it and it is my favorite brand of Isekai romance!
other reason to watch Do It Yourself: the MC's full name is Yua Serufu.
for more non-isekai fantasy stories we also have Legend of Mana, adapting a part of the game, and Management of a Novice Alchemist, another comfy CGDCT which is similar to the Atelier series and features badass best girl Ophelia (who is unfortunately not the MC).

It’s amazing how much great shows are in the fall, after the “just ok” summer season. I’m into wholesome these days so I’m invested in mob psycho, diy, bocchi, golden kamuy , and spy family.
Summer was a little lacking. I think I only really ended up watching Lycoris Recoil, but I want to watch Call of the Night - just not willing to fork out for Hidive.
Yeah, "just ok" season that brought us STR, one of the best adaptations of the decade which Corporate Basement sandbagged due to Disney's licensing jail >_
My mom's thoughts, in chronological order:
"Gundam! I remember watching that on Toonami back before you were born. There's more of it?" "Yeah. A lot. A LOT a lot." "That's wonderful! Well, I know what I'm doing when I'm knitting from now on." "Don't you need to look at the knitting needles? You can't do that and read subtitles." "Looking at the needles is for amateurs. I can do both."
"I've adopted Serufu in my heart already. What a shimbo." "A what?" "It's like a himbo, but a lady. Anyway, she's my baby now and I will make her a lasagna."
"I love everything about this and also "woo-hoo, marriage" is what I'm ending all my texts to your dad in from now on."
"People willfully destroying each other's futures is just called having siblings. But I like the twist where they're all in good shape. That's nothing like having siblings."
"Hitori is my neurodivergent daughter and I will fight every hater in her TH-cam comments."
"Oh right, the truck adventure genre!" "...what?" "They all die via trucks, right? And then they go on adventures. Anyway, Cat Girl Moses looks good." "I - I - what?!" "She's freeing her people. Like Moses."
"This sounds like it'd be fun to watch with some wine and some Ren Fair people."
"Make her a lasagna. THAT'S how you curry some favor. Also, I ship it."
"This reminds me of your Aunt Judy." "You say that EVERY TIME someone has a gun!" "I should call her more often. You know, we really don't hang out enough."
"I remember this one! Geoff liked the mangoes of it." "Manga. The comics are called manga." "I like my idea better."
Bonus recs:
"Should've romanced the heroine."
"Weird, but I'm here for it."
"I already want them to get married."
"I will adopt this tanuki. She's baby."
Hey geoff, just in case you haven't checked it out Dragon Quest: Adventures of Dai ends next week with episode 100.
Yeah, it has been an amazing adaptation, with beautiful animation and action, on top of a tight story, and its very impressive how well the power ups have aged, because they are based on technique and world building, rather that inner power or variations of that
Personally, i really like the final boss concept, his transformations and powers feel so grounded, as they have plenty of links to other elements of the story, and his ultimate bullshit technique being just a solid combo, it feels so fresh when compared with the broken abilities final bosses tend to have, yet its as much of a bullshit ultimate broken power as your run-of-the-mill invincible powers
@@ItsATMDrums i mean it is a toei production all things considered. That's a staple of all of their productions.

Oh and Sentai's streaming service HiDive is really getting some good stuff this season. I originally picked it up to watch the back catalog like Patlabor, but I am sticking around because of the new stuff. Back catalog stuff often is the BD version though, to be warned.

I'm the Villainess is my favorite of the honorable mentions. Aileen is delightful.
There are so many shows this season, I'm already exhausted
Overall this season is far too overwhelming
Edit: Just finished Blue Lock and gotta say it's freakin amazing.
Bro, watching Do It Yourself to edit this video made me way too attached, Yua and her pet pig are so much fun
Pray for Meat. Dinnertime brings such terror to the poor little guy.
Just want to say thank you and good job :)
Loved your performance in Mushoku Tensei!!
14 to 1 That's the highest match my list to your list yet, and 'Maid war' is bat shit crazy in a wild good way.

I’m so excited for the Urusei Yatsura reboot. That 80s version holds a special place in my heart.
Eminence in the Shadow 1st Episode, IS in the LN. But in Volume 4, where it told Back Story of the MC.
Has there been a bad rakugo anime? They all seem to be bangers.
If you like rakugo anime check out the new jump manga Akane Banashi
@@mothersbasement Loving Akane banashi, makes me want to know more about Rakugo. I’ve been looking for an anime to scratch that itch, thank you!
@@MPerMinute I've heard good things about Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju (on Crunchy) for rakugo but haven't had time to watch it yet.
I never liked Gundam that much, but The Witch From Mercury caught me so off guard! It's such a great show
Great video thanks! I subscribed to HiDive when It’s Ya Boy Kongming came out. No regrets
I just realized how much you sound like Sheldon from the big bang theory
I think this is the first ones to watch video where I'm already watching everything you've mentioned. I guess that means Geoff has trained me well and I already have the same level of discerning taste.
And yes, you should absolutely be watching Akiba Maid War.
I was onto AMW after its PV release, as soon as it dropped i was watching, waiting for the bloodshed (after opening scene and OP)
It delivered on my expectations......heck it surpassed it by that Stylised Musical Butchering 👌😘💣
