A cool little detail: The machine gun that Takina is firing in episode 1 is a PKM. Irl the PKM fires the 7.62x54r "rimmed" cartridge. In this scene, the shell casings from the PKM Takina is firing are accurately depicted as rimmed cartridges. Nowadays 99% of guns fire "rimless" cartridges with the PKM and its derivatives being among the few exceptions. The fact that they had enough attention to detail to correctly animate something like specific shell casings is really impressive.
In Kojima's defense. The man is kind of a paradox. He is openly and overtly anti military, all his game had an anti war message and criticism to military culture. He also loves guns and tanks and giant mechas. So an anime about none lethal armor piercers with cute anime girls sound right up his alley, we shouldn't be surprised in the slightest.
One of my five favorites games are The Saboteur, the Sniper Elite V2, III and IV and Project Wingman, the first four even that they have a lot of guns and explosions are pretty anti-fascist games, and Project Wingman with all the action with fighter jets is the the combat fighter jets version of Spec Ops The Line, pretty anti-war, the game really make you feel a hero till the Prospero mission, when the city is literally bombed to the ground and apocalyptic event occur, all the feeling of victory that you previously had goes pretty down the drain, and only feeling left is horror and dread.
it ain't all that paradoxical at all. weapons aren't just created by a person willing something lethal into existence - there's a lot of artistry, engineering, and ingenuity that goes into the creation of something as rudimentary as a dagger, and that's just the physical aspects of the weapon itself. many weapons have deep and fascinating histories, both behind their creation and in how they impacted human history as a whole. and all of this is especially true when it comes to personal and customized weaponry, where the needs and expressions of a particular individual can sign through in many ways there really is _so_ much to nerd out over when it comes to weapons without being a weirdo that actually fantasizes about _using_ them on people. in fact, i'd say it _especially_ makes sense for weapon nerds to be vehemently anti-war, because ... i mean, they _know_ how much damage they can do and the ease with which they cause major tragedies
im thinking of ways to actually make that.. something like a rubber bullet with a ceramic shell. that shatters and peels off after the armor letting the rubber ball through? some sort of 2 stage round?
@J S That would still be categorized as lethal cause that ceramic tip would still go through flesh and kill someone. Besides, that round would also need a lot of variations cause not all armor is the same. Pretty dangerous too cause one mistake could kill someone, not to mention making logistics more complicated.
@@JS-rv3et I think you need to use something a bit more breakable. I think the thing that makes the bullets special is the fact that they break easily. If we consider the fact that Chisato generally keeps both hands on her gun if she can help it, and the fact that these suckers go off course easily, it leads me to believe the bullets have a high density. Considering they don't pierce past armor, we need this bullet to be brittle enough to break, meaning that we need to get rid of metals since they tend to bend instead. In one of the Sherlock Holmes books its revealed that Watson was shot with a ruby. Since Rubies are brittle, but have a hardness of 9.0, they could feasibly be used as bullets. This would also explain why the fuck these bullets are so expensive in the anime.
My favorite moment is when Chisato casually mentioned that boys from a paramilitary government agency more covert than their own sometimes break into her apartment and she has to beat them up. In seconds the world and future plot possibilities expand. Also Gunslinger Girls deserves a mention for the inspiration for this series!
Kojima is the epitome of two wolves. One wolf despises war and hates capitalism. The other wolf is riding a giant mech with a giant railgun as one limb a laser drill-sword-chainsaw in the other and is blasting off with rainbow jetpacks.
Chisato's rubber bullets are like when Spider-Man throws a bad guy in the PS4/PS5 game - of course they're not dead, they activated this elaborate ploy that magically avoids them doing so. I'm still really enjoying the show.
Someone explained in a video they actually aren't Rubber Bullets, they call it Rubber but it's actually Pepper Bullets that have a powder that when on contact with skin, irritate the skin and make it feel like your skin is burning. As Chisato said, you won't die, but it'll hurt enough to make them feel like they would want to.
@@vidgamenate How exactly does a pepper bullet penetrate armor though? Leaving that bit aside pepper bullets aren't even practical I think. They'd not even leave the chamber of the gun after being fired. It's just a plot device in the end though, it doesn't really make sense, just like Chisato dodging bullets point blank.
A detail I love is Chisato doesn’t even shame Takina for taking lives and using real bullets, rather she understands and respects Takina’s beliefs while sticking to her own. I feel like any other show would’ve made it a point of argument for the two but when they talk about it here it’s more mature and understanding by the end. The most is Chisato stopping Takina during certain events, but other than that there’s a mutual respect for each other’s thought processes.
It's really nice. We also see how Chisato takes note of her partners superior aiming skill andoffers her a means for her to use that in a nonlethal manner while also leading by example and never telling her partner that she *should* do. Takina, being so focused on effectiveness, learns to adapt, with the scene where Walnut was "killed" proving to her that injuring enemies to the point of potential fatality will slow the duo down, since Chisato will obviously stop to help treat the wounds.
*(Edit: Early show spoilers)* I love Geoff's analysis of how the opening action scene tells us a lot about Takina and her field commander. But he completely missed the point of why Takina _really_ got fired. The field commander was angry about Takina's "insubordination," yes. But DA didn't care. For them, it was just a convenient excuse to get rid of her. The real reason she lost her job was because of the fact that DA failed an operation because of a hack, but they couldn't report that so they just used Takina as a scapegoat to take the fall.

But I guess that playing out of context action scenes from future episodes is a bit different from talking about story spoilers. I didn't think about it that way, my bad! 😅
The first few episodes demonstrated Takina is willing to take risks with the lives of her allies. Also, once I finish the examples, I am going into spoilers Geoff sidestepped. Let's start with the scene that got Takina demoted. Given how smoothly things have run so far according to Chisato's narration, the Lycoris usually perform their job well and even the failures don't attract attention. The DA has three goals in this operation, rescue one of their own, secure the guns cache, and capture at least one of the guys for interrogation. Given how well they usually perform, I expect whatever the DA's plan was would have worked for the first and third goals, the second was a lost cause anyways. It's possible the plan involved stalling while Chisato arrived. And it's probable the plan only involved information on the DA's side of things and they didn't need to do anything like change the traffic lights, hack a computer terminal, or whatever, all operation activities would be handled by the team on site. Whatever the plan was I think it would have worked and the Lycoris like Fuki certainly don't have reason to doubt it. Then Takina disobeys orders and starts shooting, even hitting one guy who was physically touching Erika. On one hand, that's great markmanship on an automatic weapon. But she didn't seem to show much concern for Erika and when the others call her out for disobeying orders, her reply of "And I didn't kill the hostage after all" just sounds tone deaf. Fuki, the field commander, can be excused for getting the impression that Takina didn't care if Erika was in danger rather than Takina taking a calculated risk based on her abilities. Ok next up we have the case with Saori. I'm sad they wasted this character, she could have bit a bit background character for the civilian side of Cafe LycoReco. Anyways, Takina's job here was simple, just keep Saori safe until Chisato came back. Whatever they were going to do with the lead they found, it would be reckless to start one person shot. But even if using her escort as bait was a good move, it would have been better to wait for Chisato to come back. Also, unlike the hostage example where she killed all the arms dealers but was able to rescue Erika, in this case they don't have a secondary goal. Takina's personal goal is to get a lead, but until Chisato came back her only priority was Saori's safety. Now Takina probably could have successfully won without Saori being physically hurt, unless her gun jammed on her. But there was no reason to put Saori at risk before waiting for orders from Chisato, and likely there probably wouldn't have been any reason to do so at all if Chisato had a safer plan. There was no reason to take this risk at all, Takina had one goal not many completing goals. Or perhaps I should say, she had one order, she did have the goal to get a lead but she was not told to do anything but keep Saori safe until Chisato came back meaning she risked the objective given to her for her personal one. Well it's sort of personal, the DA did want leads, but at that moment that shouldn't have been what she was worried about until Chisato came back. Let's look at the mock battle. Remember the scene Takina shot at Chisato? It was really cool. But they accidentally made it seem like Takina didn't learn. We know from future episodes Chisato might be a trained soldier and has super reflexes, but she doesn't have super right or super speed. She can't dodge a supersonic bullet if she doesn't see what's coming. A real life phenomenon involves inattentional blindness. See the book The Invisible Gorilla: And Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us or ISBN 0307459659 if you want to know more details. A finding I want to focus is on being overly focused. Basically, it's possible that when you are doing a task, your peripheral version becomes blind to everything else. This means if Chisato was focused on dodging her enemy's projectile, she might not notice an ally shooting at her. Normal people usually don't get inattentional blindness all the time, but it creeps in now and then. Do many tasks over many hours and at some point you will be fixated on one of them and be struck by inattentional blindness. I want to repeat that Chisato wouldn't be immune to this since she has super reflexes not super sight. The reason we don't see character have inattentional blindness in anime is the same reason we don't focus on their misspellings, people usually spell right and it only makes sense to show unusual things that are plot relevant. When Takina shot at Chisato, she was already moving and had to twist. if she twisted the other way, she'd just twist into Fuki, or at least into spitting distance of her. If Takina did this because only pride was at stake, it meant she was probably disobeying orders since the Lycoris were probably told to take these mock battles seriously. If Takina did take it seriously, well think about it. Imagine if instead of Fuki and Sakura it was two gunmen. Chisato was winning against one and forced back by the other, but still dodging. And Takina decides instead of trying to come at a different side, or rushing down the last bad guy (who would be in Fuki's position) she decides to aim at her ally. Even the rushdown tactic is less dangerous! Takina essentially played Russian Roulette with her ally. Ok, probably better odds than 5 in 6 for Chisato dodging, but there was no need to make a snap decision this time while arguably there might have been in one in the hostage case. As awesome as this scene was, if you remember they're supposed to treat the mock battle seriously, it does make it seem Takina is rather reckless with the lives of her allies when you think about it. Fuki has every reason to view Takina as someone who was reckless with the lives of allies and insubordinate. And the mock battle, if you think about the implications of aiming at an ally, accidentally means the narrative supports her view. Sure the real reason Takina was removed was to be a scapegoat, but her actions makes her a convenient one. Takina certainly needed a "time out" from the DA and the mock battle accidentally showed she still is reckless with allies. Does she deserve being given the boot with no chance to come back? No. But the unjust thing was not her transfer, but making it permanent was unfair.
This show has a lot going for it, the steller animation, action, and story...but by far it's best quality is Chisato and Takina's relationship. It's so SO good and fun and cute and i ADORE THEM!
The chemistry between the show's two main leads seems to be the "X factor" that's allowing Lycoris Recoil to have more visibility among anime viewers compared to other somewhat similar shows like Princess Principal.
My hang-up isn't with the show... ALL anime seems to take sharp departures from anything approaching reality within the first thirty seconds on the screen...as does Lycoris Recoil... What makes this one DIFFERENT, from all the predecessors, is HOW they hit the oh-so-tired tropes from an unusual angle... Take the 'pantsu' thing. Until Chisato demurely removes hers, not a single pair, other than in the abstract is seen. Even the store isn't a pantsu gag machine. Yet, the hilarity doesn't stop about them. Even the 'unseen by audience' peeks have the impeccable tweety-bird sound in the pause... The one thing that would ruin the whole thing, IMHO, is to take the mystery of the "Will they? Won't they? Have they?" intimate relationship and making it canon, one way or another. Keep it guessing... I have no idea how they keep going from Hawai’i in a second season... But I want to find out...
To be honest, one of the main reasons why I really hope they don't kill off Chisato is just because it's _such_ an obvious move that even I could see it coming, and I want to believe this series is better than that. ...Admittedly, killing off _Takina_ is something that didn't occur to me until right now, though...
Killing Takina and having Chisato go on a revenge murder spree would be a great way to polarize the fanbase. Let's hope they don't do either part of that, though!
Freaking heck, if they kill off Takina I might actually die out of sympathy. I would be unsurprised if we get a near-death Takina, where it's unclear if she survives, to motivate Chisato but then later we get her at Takina's hospital bedside.
what IF we get Takina severely injured (say lost limb, internal organ failure, whatever) & the guy from the Alan Institution see's her on par with Chisato finally & just so happens to have a sophisticated artificial limb or organ much like Chisato's heart & because he's got a raging hard on about ''killing being God's gift'' he swoops in to save her which in turn would keep Takina in the series but also have to get used to a new type of fighting style due to weight & other mechanical implications, whatever. Hell, maybe she loses an eye, gets an artificial one & her long range accuracy is just that much better because it has precision beyond belief...? edit: merely spitballin' after finishing up to episode 9 & waiting for episode 10.
Given the revelations of the past two weeks, AND the mountain of death flags so high it would make Age of Ultron Hawkeye blush, I don’t think anything will happen to Chisato. They’ve made it too obvious at this point. This might just be cope though
Something I really like, is when Chisato drops her facade. Yes, she's super cutesy and fun, but she's cranking it up to 11. When she drops it to her real 5, you see this intelligent calculator who's aware of everyone's moves. She is sensitive to wording, and is extremely astute to the situation.
the medical review scene in ep 3 def shows that when that accidental reveal strike her and she shot back ... HARD. and just as hard in the CQB battle royale later after
She also drops this a bit after she learns that she doesn't have long left. She even open fires on random civilians who are pestering her. Granted, since her gun is non-lethal exclusively, I guess it's not that bad. But she still just whipped out her pistol and fired at some people doing a road rage. She keeps up this face of having accepted her fate and being okay with it, but this little bit shows that even with all the time she's had to process her short life, she's still bothered by it.
"(Chisato's abilities) mark her out as an animal born to do one thing and one thing only" Jeff wrote this at the midway of the season, and I think this is the best spoiler free plot synopsis someone at the end could have made for a different character's motivation, and that is fucking incredible.
Chisato manspreads when she sits down harder than John Wick. And gives zero fucks while doing it but also tries to bring a smile to your face and that's why I love her.

If Cowboy Bebop was the manly, jaded crime dark comedy with our favorite Bounty Hunters, then Lycoris Recoil is the girly, upbeat take. And both have awesome fighting scenes. With both guns and martial arts. Geoff's right: if it lands properly, we got a classic, people.
Aronofsky actually deserves a lot more credit, because unlike every other Hollywood director mentioned, when he decided he wanted to copy Perfect Blue, he went out and bought the rights to it.
That's a rumor, the deal never happened. Satoshi Kon learned about the movie by watching it and being told by Aronofsky it was an homage. There are video clips of him telling this story and feeling plagiarized since it wasn't just the bathtub scene.
Eh, no? I don’t know much about it, but I do know the creator of Perfect Blue, Kon, did not like Aronofsky and held that grudge until he died, at which point Aronofsky proceeded to keep using his work without consequence because he was dead… To be honest they both seem kinda unpleasant from interviews and cultural differences masking that fact seems to be the only reason they didn’t openly despise each other.
I assume that the anime John Wick schoolgirl who uses non-lethal armor-piercing bullets and doesn't want to kill people, is probably going to be forced into the choice of either killing someone, or at least coming very close to killing someone. And it is going to shake her resolve and genki happiness, until her support network snaps her out of it.
I absolutely love the occasional use of unfinished shots in this video. I’m an animator and I watch these videos partially for recommendations for really well-animated anime, and getting to see works in progress adds a ton to that experience. I had an idea for the non-lethal bullets. The bullets are actually a gel that hardens when voltage is passed through it. The gel begins to soften when voltage is removed. So when the round is fired it is as hard as a average bullet, but after passing through the car door it has soften to the point of rubber. This is why she shoots multiple times, to make sure they stay down. The dust is the gel desintegrating on impact after losing it's hardness.
I had friends on discord recommend me this show and I adore it. You nailed the analysis. The characters of Chisato and Takina are opposites that find ways to work with each other on missions and work as a badass team. (And elevate them as a ship.) The amount of tension of the world contrasted with the light hearted moments alway have me waiting for the next episode. I can’t wait to see how the season will end. Maybe the fan theories will be right.
I feel like everyone would suspend their disbelief of the rubber bullets a lot more if they simply didn’t have that one scene that showed them piercing through a metal door but not human skin
I imagine it could be headcanon'd as the bullets having metal detectors that trigger otherwise stable explosive charges when needed... But yeah, it would be better if they actually explained it on-screen, or even just outright avoided showing stuff that raises unnecessary questions in the first place...
Assume that they function as solids when they strike rigid objects, and powder when they strike non-rigid objects like human bodies and they work at least in head cannon.
Initially they were to make it a dark show. But then the director changed it because he wanted to give a show that can make veiwers laugh every 5 minutes. This was said by the director himself in an interview.

There is a great blend of smoothly animated moments including fluid action and slick character motions combined with the comedic slice-of-life moments with an interesting underlying mystery. This is an engaging and delightful watch that anyone who is a fan of the genre should try.

Reactive ammo is being experimented with by several militaries. The concept is when it impacts hard surfaces like metal it becomes armor piercing and when it comes in contact with flesh it mushrooms. Seems like doing 50% one and not the other is within the realm of possibility.

Funny thing about the metal piercing but not lethal bullets are a real project that was being worked on by US DARPA. The funny thing is the public project went dark, in that way, like it worked. lol I think it had to do with Variable Velocity Weapon Concept and something about Fluid rigidity of the human body.
I recently rewatched the whole Trigun series, so after watching this show I immediately saw a similar connection between chisato and vash, glad someone else saw the similarities also 👍🏼

Really cool looking, but absolute nonsense would not work in the real world at all LOL she probably weighs about 80 lb, so when she throws an elbow at a full-grown 200 lb man, he's not going to a: Dodge or b: be knocked back and stunned. Also, being able to dodge bullets like that is nonsense. The first time she threw every ounce of power she had into a punch, kick, elbow, what have you, the guy would just let it hit him and then dome her. Or knock her out with a single punch. When it comes to physical combat, size really does matter. A smaller combatant should stay further away. So making it so she has to get right up next to them in order to shoot them means she would be dead the very first time she tried. But, like I said - it looks cool.
Ah, see, the bullets have a similarity to things like oobleck and kevlar where they pull together against greater impact forces, so harder materials they punch through but soft things make them break apart non lethally. It's all very scientifically possible, and the military definitely have a prototype. Source: trust me dude, I know a guy and watched some TH-cam videos 😄
See, the bullets have a detector on the tip that allows them to go through metal intact but the second they make contact with skin they immediately propel in the opposite direction and fragment into a cloud of metal fragments that look red, only leaving a small impact (like a rubber bullet) on the skin it hit. That's the only logical way I could make sense of that bs. But I never think about this too much, the freaking show looks and sounds so amazingly good that they could do whatever on the screen and it would be mesmerizing. But then again, the plot and action and all the moe moe is all so perfect in a way that's fresh

It is the most slept upon anime of this season and nobody is watching it. I know that it is intimidating since it's a sequel to the live-action Kamen Rider W but I am confident to say that you aren't required to watch Kamen Rider W. You could watch Fuuto PI with an open mind. I just ask that you watch and give your thoughts.
The video was really very detailed and clearly laid out like all of your other works. But, I feel you should have also mentioned about just how good the anime ost is. It certainly has one of the best both op and ed in this entire year.
I love the details on the guns and Chisatos gun is unique, it's a 1911 chambered in .45 ACP but with a frame mounted meat tenderizer compensator and Takinas gun a S&W M&P is very nice.
I really appreciate your knowledge of cinema. I feel like sometimes the cinema community and anime community are afraid to overlap despite the clear heavy influences they both play on each other. One believes everything is action films and the other shonen.

Oh my sweet summer child, casually Chika Anzai (Chisato's VA) also voices Kousaka Reina from Hibike Euphonium. And compared to LycoReco, Reina and Kumiko are hella way a much more closeted gay couple
It's why I love original series, I don't expect too much and sometimes I get big banger. With well executed story, characters, beautiful art, clean animation I got the best anime of the season so far and maybe even of the year. They have a rly nice gem they can use to make ppl happy and earn a lot, I'm interested to see how will they use this serie in a long run. I like that LN will be more focused about daily cafe life and overall Slice of Life. Tho last 4 episodes may be pain to wait for xD
For me, this anime is Yuru Camp with guns. It heals my soul. Also love how Chisato speaks like an angry shonen protagonist(most of the time), instead of a moe character. I find it funny.
I love when Creators dress Anime Characters with more than 1 or 2 Outfits in the Entire Show. Chisato already worn so much Outfits in the Episodes and all of them looking so good on her. The Dress from the Nightclub/Bar Episode was soooooooo awesome 😍😍
OK, that's one of the best and most hard-working embedded creator ads I've seen. Sharp writing, good lipsync, tight editing. And the anime looks great too. YT recommended this after I took a chance on watching a Brandon Talks video on Konosuba. Worth it, totally subbed. :D Your point about these kinds of anime being both superficial gratification AND something deeper or at least more quality than cheap thrills, is a reason why I keep coming back to anime and manga. I enjoy the high school level or better multi-layered approach that good manga/anime writers and directors take. I like my stories and characters to have a little depth, contrast, contradiction, social commentary, satire, etc, but not so much that it becomes a philosophically ponderous slog. That's why by-the-numbers, market-tested Hollywood blockbusters on one end and avant garde arthouse films on the other end generally don't do it for me. I know the ultraviolent moe gap shtick is problematic, but I also enjoy it. :P
Revisiting this video after Lycoris Recoil ended, and it definitely did everything I wanted it to do. SPOILERS I wanted Majima to destabilize society by revealing the Lycoris, but I was surprised at how they still covered it up as an entertainment broadcast. Really creative. I loved the gunplay in the final fight. I'm glad they left Majima alive to set up for a potential second season. But if this is the end, I'm also satisfied with it. The ending with Chisato and Takina playing in the water at the beach definitely made me think back to Yu Yu Hakusho. The ending in Hawaii was also so cute. Chisato's Engrish was too cute.
@@sometime2530 No one ever really shot him with actual lethal rounds. Chisato actively chooses to not kill him, hence he's not going to die unless Chisato does it. Plus, he has as much plot armor as Chisato, making him the only real threat.
Honestly, I've been worried (mildly hopeful, but very much worried) for a twisted show down between Chi and Taki. The first eps (especially the eye catch) gave me the vibe of a sort of 'Noir' sort of show down later in the season. ... and given where we left off with the last eps, that jerk ball Alan using the heart of Chi to twist her and that leading to that end is what I fear as the way they do it (fear in sense of liking the characters vs fear of thinking it would be a bad twist. not sure ultimately how I would feel in the end)
Maybe the Heartless Monsters that give her an artificial heart to make her a weapon, and when that fail is trying to kill her, but we wont see the resolution of that till the next weekend.
With the season now wrapped let me say a big thank you for recommending this because it was one hell of a ride all the way through the end and now here's hoping for a season 2
the writing is the biggest factor imo. The animation quality could take a pretty steep nosedive, but with a good story that's the most important part. Look at Arsnotoria, which Geoff recommended in the what to watch video. Amazing animation, high production value, but a story so incredibly dull and badly written that it completely ruins everything.

0:20 that might not be as unrealistic as it first appears. Apparently there's a type of bullets called "frangible bullets" that will disintegrate upon inpact, but some have tested it and it still goes through car doors; someone has tested it and uploaded it onto TH-cam, and it looks pretty convincing. Real frangible bullets are made by filling casing with highly compressed metal powder, and is made to help avoid ricochetting, not to make it non fatal. The artistic liberty taken here is on how little damage it did, especially at that range, not on how it goes through car doors.
I hope it’s the “spared bad guy comes back as a good guy” thing. I feel like there was a connection with that one mobster during the walnut protection episode.
my theory is Chisato is a sleeper agent for the Allen institute, and will be activated to unleash her full lethality on the D.A. Takina will then use her Paper Scissors Rock method to subdue her and use the whole "remember who you are" gambit
it's cute, it's cool and it's YURI. the art beautifull, the ost banger, the main character cheerfullness is over the chart. It was such a fun show. While it not really accurate per se but the show got some details that really cool like chisato's gun stance that goes well toward her dodging skill and takina's that goes with her more marksman skill. It was FUN
That we would known after Takina rescue Chisato of her unwilling surgery, it seems that she is a cyborg somehow, that may be why she is capable of calculating the trajectories, but the device is in her heart, if that is taken from her. That would make her less effective? Resulting in using lethal force because she can shoot at short distances? Or they want her to be the opposite way more effective? And less human?
To be fair, "secret orphan army that murders super-criminals to preserve a phony peace for the sake of capitalism" is a very Kojima premise.

A cool little detail: The machine gun that Takina is firing in episode 1 is a PKM. Irl the PKM fires the 7.62x54r "rimmed" cartridge. In this scene, the shell casings from the PKM Takina is firing are accurately depicted as rimmed cartridges. Nowadays 99% of guns fire "rimless" cartridges with the PKM and its derivatives being among the few exceptions. The fact that they had enough attention to detail to correctly animate something like specific shell casings is really impressive.

In Kojima's defense. The man is kind of a paradox. He is openly and overtly anti military, all his game had an anti war message and criticism to military culture. He also loves guns and tanks and giant mechas.
So an anime about none lethal armor piercers with cute anime girls sound right up his alley, we shouldn't be surprised in the slightest.
One of my five favorites games are The Saboteur, the Sniper Elite V2, III and IV and Project Wingman, the first four even that they have a lot of guns and explosions are pretty anti-fascist games, and Project Wingman with all the action with fighter jets is the the combat fighter jets version of Spec Ops The Line, pretty anti-war, the game really make you feel a hero till the Prospero mission, when the city is literally bombed to the ground and apocalyptic event occur, all the feeling of victory that you previously had goes pretty down the drain, and only feeling left is horror and dread.
it ain't all that paradoxical at all. weapons aren't just created by a person willing something lethal into existence - there's a lot of artistry, engineering, and ingenuity that goes into the creation of something as rudimentary as a dagger, and that's just the physical aspects of the weapon itself. many weapons have deep and fascinating histories, both behind their creation and in how they impacted human history as a whole. and all of this is especially true when it comes to personal and customized weaponry, where the needs and expressions of a particular individual can sign through in many ways
there really is _so_ much to nerd out over when it comes to weapons without being a weirdo that actually fantasizes about _using_ them on people. in fact, i'd say it _especially_ makes sense for weapon nerds to be vehemently anti-war, because ... i mean, they _know_ how much damage they can do and the ease with which they cause major tragedies

I think you need to use something a bit more breakable. I think the thing that makes the bullets special is the fact that they break easily. If we consider the fact that Chisato generally keeps both hands on her gun if she can help it, and the fact that these suckers go off course easily, it leads me to believe the bullets have a high density. Considering they don't pierce past armor, we need this bullet to be brittle enough to break, meaning that we need to get rid of metals since they tend to bend instead.
In one of the Sherlock Holmes books its revealed that Watson was shot with a ruby. Since Rubies are brittle, but have a hardness of 9.0, they could feasibly be used as bullets. This would also explain why the fuck these bullets are so expensive in the anime.
My favorite moment is when Chisato casually mentioned that boys from a paramilitary government agency more covert than their own sometimes break into her apartment and she has to beat them up. In seconds the world and future plot possibilities expand.
Also Gunslinger Girls deserves a mention for the inspiration for this series!

Chisato's rubber bullets are like when Spider-Man throws a bad guy in the PS4/PS5 game - of course they're not dead, they activated this elaborate ploy that magically avoids them doing so.
I'm still really enjoying the show.
Someone explained in a video they actually aren't Rubber Bullets, they call it Rubber but it's actually Pepper Bullets that have a powder that when on contact with skin, irritate the skin and make it feel like your skin is burning. As Chisato said, you won't die, but it'll hurt enough to make them feel like they would want to.

They'd not even leave the chamber of the gun after being fired. It's just a plot device in the end though, it doesn't really make sense, just like Chisato dodging bullets point blank.

A detail I love is Chisato doesn’t even shame Takina for taking lives and using real bullets, rather she understands and respects Takina’s beliefs while sticking to her own. I feel like any other show would’ve made it a point of argument for the two but when they talk about it here it’s more mature and understanding by the end. The most is Chisato stopping Takina during certain events, but other than that there’s a mutual respect for each other’s thought processes.
It's really nice. We also see how Chisato takes note of her partners superior aiming skill andoffers her a means for her to use that in a nonlethal manner while also leading by example and never telling her partner that she *should* do. Takina, being so focused on effectiveness, learns to adapt, with the scene where Walnut was "killed" proving to her that injuring enemies to the point of potential fatality will slow the duo down, since Chisato will obviously stop to help treat the wounds.

I love Geoff's analysis of how the opening action scene tells us a lot about Takina and her field commander. But he completely missed the point of why Takina _really_ got fired. The field commander was angry about Takina's "insubordination," yes. But DA didn't care. For them, it was just a convenient excuse to get rid of her. The real reason she lost her job was because of the fact that DA failed an operation because of a hack, but they couldn't report that so they just used Takina as a scapegoat to take the fall.
I was intentionally avoiding that point because it’s a recent twist. Note I mentioned that the radio interference was “technically unprecedented” right before that

But I guess that playing out of context action scenes from future episodes is a bit different from talking about story spoilers. I didn't think about it that way, my bad! 😅
The first few episodes demonstrated Takina is willing to take risks with the lives of her allies. Also, once I finish the examples, I am going into spoilers Geoff sidestepped.
Let's start with the scene that got Takina demoted. Given how smoothly things have run so far according to Chisato's narration, the Lycoris usually perform their job well and even the failures don't attract attention. The DA has three goals in this operation, rescue one of their own, secure the guns cache, and capture at least one of the guys for interrogation. Given how well they usually perform, I expect whatever the DA's plan was would have worked for the first and third goals, the second was a lost cause anyways. It's possible the plan involved stalling while Chisato arrived. And it's probable the plan only involved information on the DA's side of things and they didn't need to do anything like change the traffic lights, hack a computer terminal, or whatever, all operation activities would be handled by the team on site. Whatever the plan was I think it would have worked and the Lycoris like Fuki certainly don't have reason to doubt it. Then Takina disobeys orders and starts shooting, even hitting one guy who was physically touching Erika. On one hand, that's great markmanship on an automatic weapon. But she didn't seem to show much concern for Erika and when the others call her out for disobeying orders, her reply of "And I didn't kill the hostage after all" just sounds tone deaf. Fuki, the field commander, can be excused for getting the impression that Takina didn't care if Erika was in danger rather than Takina taking a calculated risk based on her abilities.
Ok next up we have the case with Saori. I'm sad they wasted this character, she could have bit a bit background character for the civilian side of Cafe LycoReco. Anyways, Takina's job here was simple, just keep Saori safe until Chisato came back. Whatever they were going to do with the lead they found, it would be reckless to start one person shot. But even if using her escort as bait was a good move, it would have been better to wait for Chisato to come back. Also, unlike the hostage example where she killed all the arms dealers but was able to rescue Erika, in this case they don't have a secondary goal. Takina's personal goal is to get a lead, but until Chisato came back her only priority was Saori's safety. Now Takina probably could have successfully won without Saori being physically hurt, unless her gun jammed on her. But there was no reason to put Saori at risk before waiting for orders from Chisato, and likely there probably wouldn't have been any reason to do so at all if Chisato had a safer plan. There was no reason to take this risk at all, Takina had one goal not many completing goals. Or perhaps I should say, she had one order, she did have the goal to get a lead but she was not told to do anything but keep Saori safe until Chisato came back meaning she risked the objective given to her for her personal one. Well it's sort of personal, the DA did want leads, but at that moment that shouldn't have been what she was worried about until Chisato came back.
Let's look at the mock battle. Remember the scene Takina shot at Chisato? It was really cool. But they accidentally made it seem like Takina didn't learn. We know from future episodes Chisato might be a trained soldier and has super reflexes, but she doesn't have super right or super speed. She can't dodge a supersonic bullet if she doesn't see what's coming. A real life phenomenon involves inattentional blindness. See the book The Invisible Gorilla: And Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us or ISBN 0307459659 if you want to know more details. A finding I want to focus is on being overly focused. Basically, it's possible that when you are doing a task, your peripheral version becomes blind to everything else. This means if Chisato was focused on dodging her enemy's projectile, she might not notice an ally shooting at her. Normal people usually don't get inattentional blindness all the time, but it creeps in now and then. Do many tasks over many hours and at some point you will be fixated on one of them and be struck by inattentional blindness. I want to repeat that Chisato wouldn't be immune to this since she has super reflexes not super sight. The reason we don't see character have inattentional blindness in anime is the same reason we don't focus on their misspellings, people usually spell right and it only makes sense to show unusual things that are plot relevant. When Takina shot at Chisato, she was already moving and had to twist. if she twisted the other way, she'd just twist into Fuki, or at least into spitting distance of her. If Takina did this because only pride was at stake, it meant she was probably disobeying orders since the Lycoris were probably told to take these mock battles seriously. If Takina did take it seriously, well think about it. Imagine if instead of Fuki and Sakura it was two gunmen. Chisato was winning against one and forced back by the other, but still dodging. And Takina decides instead of trying to come at a different side, or rushing down the last bad guy (who would be in Fuki's position) she decides to aim at her ally. Even the rushdown tactic is less dangerous! Takina essentially played Russian Roulette with her ally. Ok, probably better odds than 5 in 6 for Chisato dodging, but there was no need to make a snap decision this time while arguably there might have been in one in the hostage case. As awesome as this scene was, if you remember they're supposed to treat the mock battle seriously, it does make it seem Takina is rather reckless with the lives of her allies when you think about it.
Fuki has every reason to view Takina as someone who was reckless with the lives of allies and insubordinate. And the mock battle, if you think about the implications of aiming at an ally, accidentally means the narrative supports her view. Sure the real reason Takina was removed was to be a scapegoat, but her actions makes her a convenient one. Takina certainly needed a "time out" from the DA and the mock battle accidentally showed she still is reckless with allies. Does she deserve being given the boot with no chance to come back? No. But the unjust thing was not her transfer, but making it permanent was unfair.
This show has a lot going for it, the steller animation, action, and story...but by far it's best quality is Chisato and Takina's relationship. It's so SO good and fun and cute and i ADORE THEM!

The chemistry between the show's two main leads seems to be the "X factor" that's allowing Lycoris Recoil to have more visibility among anime viewers compared to other somewhat similar shows like Princess Principal.
Really, does that save the show from itself? I'm super tired of the Badass Adorable & Little Miss Badass trope that it upset my stomach.

ALL anime seems to take sharp departures from anything approaching reality within the first thirty seconds on the screen...as does Lycoris Recoil...
What makes this one DIFFERENT, from all the predecessors, is HOW they hit the oh-so-tired tropes from an unusual angle...
Take the 'pantsu' thing. Until Chisato demurely removes hers, not a single pair, other than in the abstract is seen. Even the store isn't a pantsu gag machine.
Yet, the hilarity doesn't stop about them. Even the 'unseen by audience' peeks have the impeccable tweety-bird sound in the pause...
The one thing that would ruin the whole thing, IMHO, is to take the mystery of the "Will they? Won't they? Have they?" intimate relationship and making it canon, one way or another. Keep it guessing...
I have no idea how they keep going from Hawai’i in a second season...

To be honest, one of the main reasons why I really hope they don't kill off Chisato is just because it's _such_ an obvious move that even I could see it coming, and I want to believe this series is better than that.

Killing Takina and having Chisato go on a revenge murder spree would be a great way to polarize the fanbase. Let's hope they don't do either part of that, though!

I would be unsurprised if we get a near-death Takina, where it's unclear if she survives, to motivate Chisato but then later we get her at Takina's hospital bedside.
what IF we get Takina severely injured (say lost limb, internal organ failure, whatever) & the guy from the Alan Institution see's her on par with Chisato finally & just so happens to have a sophisticated artificial limb or organ much like Chisato's heart & because he's got a raging hard on about ''killing being God's gift'' he swoops in to save her which in turn would keep Takina in the series but also have to get used to a new type of fighting style due to weight & other mechanical implications, whatever. Hell, maybe she loses an eye, gets an artificial one & her long range accuracy is just that much better because it has precision beyond belief...?

Given the revelations of the past two weeks, AND the mountain of death flags so high it would make Age of Ultron Hawkeye blush, I don’t think anything will happen to Chisato. They’ve made it too obvious at this point.

Something I really like, is when Chisato drops her facade. Yes, she's super cutesy and fun, but she's cranking it up to 11.
When she drops it to her real 5, you see this intelligent calculator who's aware of everyone's moves. She is sensitive to wording, and is extremely astute to the situation.
the medical review scene in ep 3 def shows that when that accidental reveal strike her and she shot back ... HARD. and just as hard in the CQB battle royale later after
She also drops this a bit after she learns that she doesn't have long left. She even open fires on random civilians who are pestering her. Granted, since her gun is non-lethal exclusively, I guess it's not that bad. But she still just whipped out her pistol and fired at some people doing a road rage.
She keeps up this face of having accepted her fate and being okay with it, but this little bit shows that even with all the time she's had to process her short life, she's still bothered by it.

Jeff wrote this at the midway of the season, and I think this is the best spoiler free plot synopsis someone at the end could have made for a different character's motivation, and that is fucking incredible.

That's a rumor, the deal never happened. Satoshi Kon learned about the movie by watching it and being told by Aronofsky it was an homage. There are video clips of him telling this story and feeling plagiarized since it wasn't just the bathtub scene.
Eh, no? I don’t know much about it, but I do know the creator of Perfect Blue, Kon, did not like Aronofsky and held that grudge until he died, at which point Aronofsky proceeded to keep using his work without consequence because he was dead… To be honest they both seem kinda unpleasant from interviews and cultural differences masking that fact seems to be the only reason they didn’t openly despise each other.

I’m an animator and I watch these videos partially for recommendations for really well-animated anime, and getting to see works in progress adds a ton to that experience. I had an idea for the non-lethal bullets. The bullets are actually a gel that hardens when voltage is passed through it. The gel begins to soften when voltage is removed.
So when the round is fired it is as hard as a average bullet, but after passing through the car door it has soften to the point of rubber. This is why she shoots multiple times, to make sure they stay down.
The dust is the gel desintegrating on impact after losing it's hardness.
I had friends on discord recommend me this show and I adore it. You nailed the analysis. The characters of Chisato and Takina are opposites that find ways to work with each other on missions and work as a badass team. (And elevate them as a ship.) The amount of tension of the world contrasted with the light hearted moments alway have me waiting for the next episode. I can’t wait to see how the season will end. Maybe the fan theories will be right.

Really cool looking, but absolute nonsense would not work in the real world at all LOL she probably weighs about 80 lb, so when she throws an elbow at a full-grown 200 lb man, he's not going to a: Dodge or b: be knocked back and stunned. Also, being able to dodge bullets like that is nonsense. The first time she threw every ounce of power she had into a punch, kick, elbow, what have you, the guy would just let it hit him and then dome her. Or knock her out with a single punch. When it comes to physical combat, size really does matter. A smaller combatant should stay further away. So making it so she has to get right up next to them in order to shoot them means she would be dead the very first time she tried. But, like I said - it looks cool.

Ah, see, the bullets have a similarity to things like oobleck and kevlar where they pull together against greater impact forces, so harder materials they punch through but soft things make them break apart non lethally.

See, the bullets have a detector on the tip that allows them to go through metal intact but the second they make contact with skin they immediately propel in the opposite direction and fragment into a cloud of metal fragments that look red, only leaving a small impact (like a rubber bullet) on the skin it hit. That's the only logical way I could make sense of that bs. But I never think about this too much, the freaking show looks and sounds so amazingly good that they could do whatever on the screen and it would be mesmerizing. But then again, the plot and action and all the moe moe is all so perfect in a way that's fresh

The video was really very detailed and clearly laid out like all of your other works. But, I feel you should have also mentioned about just how good the anime ost is. It certainly has one of the best both op and ed in this entire year.
I love the details on the guns and Chisatos gun is unique, it's a 1911 chambered in .45 ACP but with a frame mounted meat tenderizer compensator and Takinas gun a S&W M&P is very nice.
I really appreciate your knowledge of cinema. I feel like sometimes the cinema community and anime community are afraid to overlap despite the clear heavy influences they both play on each other. One believes everything is action films and the other shonen.
The fact that this anime has semi-realistic use of guns in a show made in japan is enough to say that its good. But also someone please teach Takina the concept of target ID and isolation

Oh my sweet summer child, casually Chika Anzai (Chisato's VA) also voices Kousaka Reina from Hibike Euphonium. And compared to LycoReco, Reina and Kumiko are hella way a much more closeted gay couple
It's why I love original series, I don't expect too much and sometimes I get big banger. With well executed story, characters, beautiful art, clean animation I got the best anime of the season so far and maybe even of the year. They have a rly nice gem they can use to make ppl happy and earn a lot, I'm interested to see how will they use this serie in a long run. I like that LN will be more focused about daily cafe life and overall Slice of Life. Tho last 4 episodes may be pain to wait for xD

OK, that's one of the best and most hard-working embedded creator ads I've seen. Sharp writing, good lipsync, tight editing. And the anime looks great too. YT recommended this after I took a chance on watching a Brandon Talks video on Konosuba. Worth it, totally subbed. :D
Your point about these kinds of anime being both superficial gratification AND something deeper or at least more quality than cheap thrills, is a reason why I keep coming back to anime and manga. I enjoy the high school level or better multi-layered approach that good manga/anime writers and directors take. I like my stories and characters to have a little depth, contrast, contradiction, social commentary, satire, etc, but not so much that it becomes a philosophically ponderous slog. That's why by-the-numbers, market-tested Hollywood blockbusters on one end and avant garde arthouse films on the other end generally don't do it for me.
I know the ultraviolent moe gap shtick is problematic, but I also enjoy it. :P
Revisiting this video after Lycoris Recoil ended, and it definitely did everything I wanted it to do.
SPOILERS
I wanted Majima to destabilize society by revealing the Lycoris, but I was surprised at how they still covered it up as an entertainment broadcast. Really creative. I loved the gunplay in the final fight. I'm glad they left Majima alive to set up for a potential second season. But if this is the end, I'm also satisfied with it.
The ending with Chisato and Takina playing in the water at the beach definitely made me think back to Yu Yu Hakusho. The ending in Hawaii was also so cute. Chisato's Engrish was too cute.

@@sometime2530 No one ever really shot him with actual lethal rounds. Chisato actively chooses to not kill him, hence he's not going to die unless Chisato does it. Plus, he has as much plot armor as Chisato, making him the only real threat.

Honestly, I've been worried (mildly hopeful, but very much worried) for a twisted show down between Chi and Taki. The first eps (especially the eye catch) gave me the vibe of a sort of 'Noir' sort of show down later in the season.
... and given where we left off with the last eps, that jerk ball Alan using the heart of Chi to twist her and that leading to that end is what I fear as the way they do it (fear in sense of liking the characters vs fear of thinking it would be a bad twist. not sure ultimately how I would feel in the end)
I had the same idea watching the opening (the 2 characters are one against the other, each one with a different 'thing' in the hand 😁)

As sharp as the writing and the characters are in this, that production value is a pretty big factor in the show's popularity.
the writing is the biggest factor imo. The animation quality could take a pretty steep nosedive, but with a good story that's the most important part. Look at Arsnotoria, which Geoff recommended in the what to watch video. Amazing animation, high production value, but a story so incredibly dull and badly written that it completely ruins everything.

@@arielvalentine2500 Of course if you have a bad story then no one will like it. But a mediocre story with amazing animation usually sells better than an amazing story with mediocre animation. There are exceptions, but in the Shounen genre it's like this most of the time.
@@Lilith_Harbinger Baby steps is a great example of a great story with mediocre animation. If the show has haikyuu level prodiction value, we might have gotten way more seasons. The manga is at 400+ chapters now.

Apparently there's a type of bullets called "frangible bullets" that will disintegrate upon inpact, but some have tested it and it still goes through car doors; someone has tested it and uploaded it onto TH-cam, and it looks pretty convincing.
Real frangible bullets are made by filling casing with highly compressed metal powder, and is made to help avoid ricochetting, not to make it non fatal. The artistic liberty taken here is on how little damage it did, especially at that range, not on how it goes through car doors.
I hope it’s the “spared bad guy comes back as a good guy” thing. I feel like there was a connection with that one mobster during the walnut protection episode.

it's cute, it's cool and it's YURI. the art beautifull, the ost banger, the main character cheerfullness is over the chart. It was such a fun show. While it not really accurate per se but the show got some details that really cool like chisato's gun stance that goes well toward her dodging skill and takina's that goes with her more marksman skill. It was FUN

The question of will the bad guys force her to go lethal again is what’s keeping me engaged, but I love the characters and action so far as well.
That we would known after Takina rescue Chisato of her unwilling surgery, it seems that she is a cyborg somehow, that may be why she is capable of calculating the trajectories, but the device is in her heart, if that is taken from her. That would make her less effective? Resulting in using lethal force because she can shoot at short distances? Or they want her to be the opposite way more effective? And less human?
