Overview:The north-east part of the country is undoubtedly beautiful in its own way with natural diversity and distinct culture, but even after being a part of the country, it is unable to co-ordinate with the mainland part, and maintaining an alienated relationship. Although, at present, due to sincere effort from the government, some parts of the ice are melting, but still somewhere, the ice is rock-solid one. What is the history behind such alienation? What are the reasons of their aloofness from the mainland? What are the initiatives taken by the government as a remedy to such situation? All these dots are connected in the discussion.

When the youngest child in the house gets angry and behaves aloofly, generally, the parents try to persuade him/her and pamper him/her even more than before. That is the exact scene between mainland India and the northeastern part where the latter is not ready to accept the proposal of integrating with the former, even after a lot of persuasions right from the conception of independence. Although for two most important reasons, where according to the former Governor of Assam’s 22-page long note, the northeastern part is in every way different from the remaining part, and according to the British-Indian Anthropologist, Varrier Elwin, these people are scared of losing their indigenous culture and that is the reason why they are not in favor of building a trust-based relationship. With the help of the Sixth Schedule, when a few of the northeastern states were integrated, Nagaland, like every other time, refused this integration and demanded separate sovereignty. When the such proposal was not agreed upon, it gave rise to internal insurgencies causing the deployment of AFSPA. It is not that the entire north-east had a fault, in fact, the Government’s over-imposing nature, the recent proposal of ‘One Nation one culture’, was the root cause behind it, but somehow, they might have understood their mistake which is evident from their changed approach of submissiveness was, the GOI urged the northeast to give a try to the fact of mixing up with the mainland along with the preservation of their own indigenous culture. Persuasion is an art and every subject requires a different approach to persuasion, one-size-fits-all kind of approach does not apply to everyone in every situation since not all fever is malaria, and not all ailments require surgery. Love and Care are all that are needed.
