Got to fly a loach once. A national guard unit did there two weeks AT at Ft Stewart, GA. My commander let me go up with an IP. That is an amazingly agile aircraft.
During flight school at Ft Rucker during primary, I was the first to hover unassisted. It is all the other stuff besides wiggling the sticks that got me into a simple bind.
Depending on the generation of the helicopter, they are great machines. Last i've know of they worked on a version 2009 that had a Rolls-Royce turbine the Eagle300T and they have the A600 Talon an upgrade from the Exec.
I recall when an Air National Guard unit came through Wright Army Airfield in Ft Stewart, GA. I asked my commander if I could take a ride in the 500 loach. He OKed the flight so long as the PIC was an instructor pilot. All helicopters are about the same. It is sort of like the 300 but on steroids. I asked the IP to show me what it could do without scaring me shitless. So, with a 1/4 tank of gas and only two on board, he pulled in an arm full of collective. We instantly became a vertical rocket ship up to 1000 agl in about 10 seconds
Thanks for sharing, you have a long Rotorway history. There are Scorpion's for sale often with the 162F engine for 25-30K USD. Good price for a solid 2 seat helicopter
Great video! Love all the helicopters! In all the "single place" birds ever built, I think the "Helecycle" is my favorite lil bird! I hope to own one some day & learn to fly some day! I just wannuh be a helo pilot so bad I can't hardly stand it! Fly safe out there, ya'll!
Thank you very much for including footage of the Scorpion Too...when I was a teenage boy, I wanted one of those SO much! And, do you know how much I envy you folks? Being a guy who works an hourly wage, I don't think I'll ever be able to afford the training for even a basic helo rating...
What th... 00:50 - I was just watching that RC chopper, but as much as he tried the bloke couldn't get in it...then i saw Barry Bonds and suddenly the little chopper could really fly.
What advantage would the helicycle have with the Yamaha 4 Stroke in it? Just Fuel consumption?? any Power Difference? very Interesting that one would opt for a Piston over a Turbine...
I have flown in a Rotorway and they handle very nice. Easier than R22. Since they are Experimental, you can't fly with the confidence that an R22 gives you. Most Rotorway owners don't fly in areas without easy auto-rotation options. Opinions vary quite a bit.
@joseppi2219 I think the main advantages would be better fuel consumption, the auto fuel itself is cheaper, and better long term supply of engines parts since there is a limited supply of Solar turbines. I don't know about the power difference or if he continued with the Yamaha 4 stroke long term..
if you want to buy the kit and build it yourself, it is $39,800... Helicycles that are already built are for sale for much more....some are for sale on the website kitcopterconsult. which you can find on google
I took an hour of instruction in that Brantly and they fly great!! 70-80K can get a used Brantly which is the cheapest by far for a certified helo.. Not the prettiest, but at least you're flying....
1000 moving parts trying to comingle. I was not a very good pilot. My instructor told me " You sure know how to fly the fuck out of this thing, It is a shame you can't think and fly at the same time."
no it actually doesn't, even it says my language that is finnish if you would go and try to translate something english to finnish it wouldn't make any sense :D our language is so complicated :D

Now I know what rich helicopter pilots do for fun... Must be nice and a lot of fun.
Some of the Helicycle owners are truck drivers. Great that people who are not zillionaires can afford to build and fly a turbine helicopter.
Had to "LIKE" - I mean what's not to like here except I wish I was one of these folks.. ha! Fun to watch! thanks for posting.

AH Hughes 500D N86ST. At that time belonged to a guy who lived near me Michael Trickett. Used to see that bird all the time.
Super nice guy and talented craftsman. He has done several ground up restorations on different helicopters.
Really good construction, ideally firm and balance
