I'm coming back to this video because in quarantine last year my circle pad finally broke off my New Leaf 3ds, and I just now replaced it. For anybody who can't do Casey's method, replacing it was actually super-duper easy, and only took me about 10 minutes for the actual repair. The only time consuming part was removing all of the screws!
Super Smash Bros Right? Me and my bro had our 3DS 3 years before playing Smash without any problems, then we bought Smash and Boom, broken rubbers in boths 3DS.
Did you avoid buying Smash? I started having issues right after I bought it, but it was wearing down anyway due to... Well, sweat. Smash just hammered the nail on the head. Sadly I sweat quite a bit during a play session. Ugh... Gotta replace it and I had the New 3DS XL only for two years.
TheHoodedReaper Mine is just glitchy in smash now .-. Years of working perfectly in Smash and all of a sudden it reads incorrect inputs and the cursor slides around on the character select screen
I bought my 3DS XL off Ebay, and noticed a little wear underneath the silicone covering to find a piece of the circle pad broken. Thank you for making this video about a quick fix so I dont have to take my 3DS apart to replace the circle pad.
Mine disintegrated due to intensive shiny hunting for a shiny ♀ popplio in ultra moon..... Though the 'plastic' part broke off previously then I glued it back then it disintegrated....
Wow, a very unique fix. This would definitely be easier for lots of people but I think installing a replacement circle pad may be easier for myself. I'm not good at this kind of thing, I'm all thumbs.

For anybody who can't do this method, replacing it was actually super-duper easy, and only took me about 10 minutes for the actual repair. The only time consuming part was removing all of the screws!
What site did you get your replacement part? Does it feel the same? Also I'm a lil hesitant cause some knockoffs have the circle pad a lil bit small or it doesn't feel the same according to reviews. What are your thoughts, if I may ask?
man mine lasted so long and went through our daycare kids playing it, i gave it away to a co worker to give his daughter when i stopped playing it and now im CRAVING to play new leaf
Yeah around $2 on ebay for maybe 2 of them. It doesn't look that hard. For me I just used a button and super glue stick it on and then sticked the top piece back on. It works tho, but the og would fell better tho
My 3DS XL that I have had for 8.5 years, circle bad broke off, and I was okay playing Animal Crossing, but Mariokart was uncomfortable, so I used play-doh, I glued it on last night, should be ready soon. Thanks for the video.
thanku for this tutorial! i used this idea as my plastic disc behind my circle pad mysteriously broke!! Then I glued the original D pad back on so I hope it works okay! :)
I seen the video accidentaly after I watched a real fix and it was playing automatically while I taking apart my sons 3ds. I got it fixed the man wa (right way). But I just wanted to say GREAT VIDEO for people who don't want to open the 3ds. or people who tried to open it and shreded screws (which I honestly done on other devices) and therefore can't open the 3ds.
well this reply is 6 years late, but yes there is a risk. If you let it drip into the circle pad part then it will seize and you will have to replace the entire part. If it falls off again then you can remove the super glue on the rubber part with acetone, dry it off, and then glue again.
just preordered pokemon moon and realized my pad on my 5 year old 3DS was acting dumb and is off center. the pad is a bit harder to push up so i'm being careful with it for the time being,, but now i have a good fix if it breaks !! thank !!
I have a question. Will a kneaded eraser work to fix a broken circle pad instead of clay? I don't know if that will be a solution to fix a circle pad, but if so, please explain how by replying to this comment.
I personally wouldn't use a kneaded eraser because it could leave a residue on your screen and might be hard to take off once you decide you want to. Kneaded erasers are also kind of gooey so I'm not sure if it would be solid enough to actually use. As another alternative, you could use play dough that you've shaped and hardened or I've even seen people use a lego! I hope this helps :3
Godot, I see you in almost every comment section I go to. xD My circle pad actually started getting stiff until I heard a peeling sound and realized the circle pad was coming off. So now I'm looking up stuff. It has personally been super duper funny for me. I'm thinking of just very lightly super gluing it back on and then leaving it for a day. But anyway-- while I don't have the most experience in play dough, it could work (as long as it bakes)... but I think I'd stick to clay. I don't know if it's sturdier but play dough doesn't seem like it would work as well due to it's main function, which is being moldable.
+Mint Lilon Thanks for the info! My circle pad is still broken, it's literally just a little knub now. It hurts to play on it sometimes but I've been planning on getting a new 3ds (or the NX). I guess I'll see you around! ;)
Mine's a little nub now too. It definitely is more uncomfortable, but still playable. I definitely want to get the NX, but the new 3DS I'll probably buy when I need a new 3DS... as long as it's the size of an XL. Which I think it is. But yeah! I'll probably see you on another comment section here soon.
I think it should be fine. I don't think the NX will have circle pads, but probably have control sticks like Nintendo usually puts in. Was SSB the game that used up your control stick? I think mine was Mario Tennis and Animal Crossing... and maybe a few others. I think I just push way too hard in general when it comes to the circle pad.
The 3ds is actually kinda modular you can literally unplug the game cartridge port i accidentally stuck gum somehow in my sisters game cartridge slot and i felt bad so i fixed it for her and it was really ease
Wow this is a amazing way to fix and decorate a 3DS. i have a similar problem (just the silicone cover get off) i just used glue to fix. this gonna help a lot of people ^-^ thx for share! PS: Nice miku cover !
My circle pad broke off, but I saved my pad and used super glue to fix it, I didn't think about using polymer clay or craft glue? it still sticks when I play, but at least it doesn't pop off...also my toddler gets a hold of it sometimes, I don't have a protector case for it so it's pre-loved ☺️
i know this video is sooooo old. but....this is what happened with mine my lil brother broke it......RUDE OF HIM.....i need to fix it like you.........thank you for a video...i almost sold it cuz it bugged me...you saved meeeeee
Thonks...I bought a second hand 3ds and It didn't come with a stylus or a Circle pad for the 3ds so I made my own stylus..it fits fairly well and now all I have to do is make my own Circle pad ....I'll use something...
hello! do you paint ( I mean handmade) your 3ds with that art? or how you did it? because as I see is not a paper sticker (or if it is, is very exact) :3 I'm pretty interested on made that kind of customs at my console! oh yep, thank you for the video I have the same problem right now (but I still have my top circle, I mean I just need to glue it and that's all)
Thank you. I still have the button, it was the rice paper washer that broke into many small pieces :( No wonder this is a recurring incident as it is a definite flaw in the process of making it in the first place. You video helped greatly as I too am not prepared to pay out for a new one just yet... not until the next pokemon game comes out at least and then I will trade in my Animal Crossing one ^_^
If you used a regular Clothing button it would of fit perfectly with the aesthetic of your 3DS :) But the clay method is good too lol, But i feel if would of looker prettier

Super Smash Bros Right? Me and my bro had our 3DS 3 years before playing Smash without any problems, then we bought Smash and Boom, broken rubbers in boths 3DS.

My circle pad broke because of super smash bros :(

Yeah mine is close to breaking too. I SERIOUSLY wish they allowed the option to switch between the Dpad and Cpad for gameplay. :/

Where did you get your Face cover for your 3Ds? To cute!
Ebay, they don't sell it any more though
Soul evans or you could go onto a website called decal girl, they make custom skins of any picture you want! (Soz for late reply)

+purple ranger sentai rider I really hope your circle pad never breaks! but if it does I'm glad I could help! ^-^
Hey, did your circle pad ever break?
lol, i drilled a small dent in a coin and glued it on mine. similar concept :d
as i've seen from another video, you can also use a long balloon's tip for the little rubber!
wow this is a genius idea thank you
Just had this happen to me while playing Monster Hunter. The analog stick still works just fine, it was just the cap itself that suddenly came off.
Now that's a very crafty way to repair your 3ds XL 😀
man mine lasted so long and went through our daycare kids playing it, i gave it away to a co worker to give his daughter when i stopped playing it and now im CRAVING to play new leaf
For a magical split second, I read "loctite" as laxative.
Clever, I better tell my friend, his broke off from Smash, also he didn't take care of it T-T
Will it work if instead of clay I use my circle pad because it fell off but I still have the rubber part
Stevie Limon yeah
Stevie Limon mmmmm??? super that it???
I have the same question
It's amazing how you do these crafts.
Its best if yall buy a replacement part. It's Pretty easy to fix(if your a kid get your parent/guardian's help)

How I broke my circle pad:
10% careless fidgeting
90% the cannonball minigame from Mario Party: Island Tour
the exact same thing happened to my 3DS! But I used a Lego piece to replace the circle pad.

Does it have to be like REALLY strong glue or can I just use like elmers glue?
I would use a strong glue. I don't think elmers glue would work.
lol elmers glue HA
Stevie Limon Lmao, dude, you had me dying laughing
great job, have you ever tried mouldable rubber?
Hi! I would like to know where did you bought that 3DS case? Thank you I loved the video(sorry if there's anything wrong I'm from Spain)

I have a New 3DS XL. Yours is actually pretty cool. 👌
I had my normal 3DS for awhile and this hasn’t happened so am think this only happens with a 3DS XL

***** oh thanks ! Just got mine soo hopefully mine lasts at least 2 years cx
That's a cute looking 3ds
I've had it since 2012 the XL, Smash Bros really destroyed my 3DS
My question is. Does it come off when you put clay on the circle pad? Like when you play a game.
I've had mine for 1 year or 2 and it still don't break
Its very good idea:) I work on videogame systems and changing the circle pad is actually really ez:))
Thats cool. I didn't feel like taking my 3DS apart to fix it tough :p

My circlepad isnt off but it stays in the direction I put it
That's all good and well but.....can you close it completely?
