*Goodbye*Farewell *Amen* 🙏🕊RIP🕊🙏 to them all. They brought more joy and laughter to so many people. They were all incredibly talented, iconic actors and actresses. Nurse Kelleye also passed away. She was the Asian/Hawaiian nurse who was around for most of the series. So many memories of all of these wonderful people. It was a blessing to have been able to watch their work and their art.
I grew up watching the reruns forty years later with my parents, so it's easy to forget how old the show actually is and it really hits when I realise how many of the actors are no longer with us.
My dad, a WWII veteran, loved this show. He would laugh so loud at times and get choked up a bit, too. Me? I loved watching my dad watching this show. I miss them both.
My father is both a WWII and a Korean War vet. In at the tail end of one and out at the beginning of the other. He always used to watch the show as well. In his later years before his dementia, he would channel surf and stop on MASH if he saw it was on.
I'm sorry for your loss of your Dad. I'm a 30 year Air Force Vet 1991-2011 and I laugh and cry with the series...especially when they cover Post Traumatic stuff.
I was in my dorm at college when this final MASH episode aired, and we all crowded into the communal TV room to watch it. We were all in tears and it was one of the hardest episodes to watch because we knew we were saying "goodbye" too, after having all these people, so real to us, as part of our lives for so many years. It was a perfect ending to the series, really the best TV show ever made.
Same here. One of the few shows ever in my lifetime that I watched religiously from the pilot to the very last episode. I loved the old days when it was Pierce and Trapper John was still there with Henry Blake in command. As the show progressed things took a more serious tone, but still stayed funny right to the end. There was just so much going on, Klinger wearing the absolute most glamorous in women's fashion making every nurse in camp jealous of his wardrobe, with his hairy ass legs😅😅😅 Margaret and Frank Burns "secret" affair, there was always more than met the eye and seems there was a little something to keep everyone interested no matter what they were looking for. I dropped off on later seasons of Roseanne, and many other shows of my past, but MASH was one I never got bored with. Over the years I would watch any time a channel was airing repeats throughout the years, and somehow it just never got old for me. I honestly can't think of any other show I was actually into like this one. Not just me either, it was our whole family looking forward to every episode. I really enjoyed Quantum Leap too as a kid, but if I had to choose, MASH was always my favorite hands down.

My friend's dad worked for Ma Bell(remember Ma Bell? lol) when phones were starting to become available to own, and boy he was so mad! I remember him going on tangents about Ma Bell not owning all of the physical phones lol. I never did find out exactly what it was that made him so mad about it.
Alan Alda was a friend of my neighbors while growing up in Ithaca NY. Whenever he visited he would play tennis with me on their back yard court. He was so funny and so nice. It's such a great memory to have.
I remember watching this when it aired. Time is a cruel thing. It moves only in one direction. RIP Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville, Harry Morgan, William Christopher, and David Ogden Stiers. Memory eternal.

It still is the highest-rated single episode in TV history.. and it's unlikely that it will ever be topped. With cable TV and streaming services, it's unlikely that you will get that many people all watching the same show at the same time. There are Superbowls that are rated higher.. but network TV doesn't get the viewership that it used to for TV shows.
I know this is the internet, we're all anonymous........but it warms my heart to see that so many share the connection, love, emotions, etc with this show.....I really like knowing that you all are out there, and that we belong to this special fraternity together
@@1927suM*A*S*H was, is, and will always be one show that did things that no other shows ever accomplish or could accomplish. For one, they lost 2 of their 3 top actors after season 3, yet they never missed a beat. As you said, the characters on this show people adored them, connected to them, and really loved them. Plus they tackled issues and problems that were happening for real yet they did it in a very positive and decent way. Agendas and issues weren't rammed down your throat. They were again shown in a way that was respectful and it never took anything away from the show, the show's plot, or the show's entertainment value. M*A*S*H was perfectly casted with extremely talented actors and actresses, the writers were absolutely incredible, and they all were the most dedicated, again talented, and special people/ensemble ever put together. And that carries over I truly believe to us, the fans who are dedicated and love and adore this show and these characters. M*A*S*H is a show that in my opinion is as close to perfection as any show ever has. And I honestly believe that there will never be another show like it ever again.

Yes it is!! I just love the writing and how quick witted everyone is. I agree that this series never gets old and as someone else commented it brings out all my emotions from laughing to crying to anger and empathy for a "forgotten" war.
I could watch this series 100 times and still could watch it again. The writing is great and the actors do a great job. I wish we could go back to some of these old shows, when we all laughed together instead of being divided.
And, once again, We say goodbye to MASH and all the wonderful actors and actresses. It means more now sadly with the passing of each year further away from the time it was on tv as well as with the passing of cast and crew. THANK YOU one and all of the cast and crew of the MASH tv serious.
My Dad a 20 year old Platoon Sgt Tanker was in Korea when the Chinese came over the border. He was highly decorated but never talked about it until one night at 1 in the morning after the two of us had gotten out of work. We were watching a war movie and I asked him if that movie was how it was. He said no and then told me some of the most horrific I've ever heard. He was bound and determined I wasn't going to Vietnam. Oddly he loved this show and watched the reruns all of the time. Maybe it helped soften the inner pain in him. The man would give you the shirt off his back. I once saw him in a bar when a guy pulled a knife on a friend of his. His friend was stabbed but the guy was doing gymnastics before he hit the floor unconscious. I saw the nan that earned the medals. I miss that man. He's been gone 25 years died young at 2 months shy of his 65th birthday.
Thank you to your father for his military service from myself, an honorably discharged US Army veteran from 1990 to 1991, and I hope he was able to soften his inner pain by watching the MASH rerun episodes.

A LOT of them are still with us! Klinger, BJ, Hawkeye, Margaret, Rizzo, Igor and Soon-Lee are all still with us. Col. Potter is dead (he was already in his mid 60's when the series was on) as well as nurse Kellye, Father Mulcahy and Charles. But they are really the only principle regulars who are dead. Unless you count the early years too because both Col Blake and Trapper are dead. But Radar is still alive.
Even though I've seen each episode some umpteen times, I still sit down whenever I see an episode on. It the characters and the way they interact with each other that keeps me coming back for more.
Thanks for this - I can't explain it, and I know I'm a throwback - but the fact it's on VHS ...with commercials - actually makes something remarkable - a pinch more special to me
Same here, Carl. I sometimes watch reruns of Johnny Carson here on TH-cam and almost enjoy the commercials as much as The Tonight Show itself. It's like being transported back in time. I miss the 70s and 80s quite a lot. Though physical time travel isn't possible, we can at least go there in our minds, if only for a little while.

A year ago, I moved to a new city and I finished unloading the truck after 10 PM. I was quite hungry and the only restaurant open was a Denny's. I walked in and noticed all the seating sections were closed and there was a sign that they were only filling "To Go" orders. When I tried to place an order to take home, I was told they couldn't help me and I'd need to use the Denny's App to order online. I explained that I didn't have a smartphone and that I just moved to the city and didn't know anyone else with a smartphone. No matter, they wouldn't help me. That seemed a bit ridiculous. Now, there are screens everywhere (even on gas pumps) that alternate between advertisements for crap "entertainment," medications to ask our doctors about, products to buy, and abominations of "food" that are full of chemicals that alter our biochemistry and distort our minds and bodies. Plus, real words are removed from the dictionary while non-words are added to it. Society is so lazy that individual letters are dropped from words, so that "please" turns into "plz." Certainly, there have been advances in the last 50 years, but some things seem to be regressing.
i recently heard someone say this show was male dominated and out of date, what the hell is wrong with people these days, this was and still is a masterpiece, it made me laugh, it made me cry, it still does both to me all these years later. an incredible piece of work.
It does not surprise me. The shallowness of today's people is laughable and infuriating at the same time. Judging one of the best TV Shows ever made, judging a TV show from the 70's that portrays events from the 50's, from the perspective of 2022 given how fucked up and self righteous the world we live in now has become, is like I said, both laughable and infuriating. M.A.S.H. is in the top 3 shows ever made. The actors and most importantly the scripts and dialogue, the witty and hidden jokes, sarcasms and real world character/event references throughout the whole show are like nothing that was ever been done before or after. You have to be very well educated in the first place, to understand all the references from all the jokes in this show. Most people now have no idea who MacArthur was or why is Uncle Tom's Cabin mentioned in an episode that portrayed the racism of an army major, but if you know history and read that book, you will get those jokes and references. These are but 2 examples, there are hundreds more. I strongly believe this show has the best writing and dialogue I've ever seen in any TV show ever.
Oh it’s definitely male dominated, it’s basic math. Bet the crew was worse. And it’s out of date, it would be a shame if nothing had changed since 1977 or whatever. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t great and still isn’t great, but you have to see it with the added knowledge of what we’ve gone through and learned since then. Watching this show as a child inspired me to become a Paramedic. I went on a call " child fell off jungle gym." It was Gary Burgoff's son. Radar, great guy in real life.

One thing this show was trying to teach was to not be ashamed and bottle things up until your in a mental ward. That was an important lesson for men then and now
I’m 62 & *MASH* was a huge part of our life;Mom & I watched in every evening after supper, good memories. One of my favorite episodes was when Radar gave Potter the horse for his anniversary, & when Potter stepped in the horsehockey, and Frank Burns said it was disgusting, and Potter replied, “ To me, that’s a tip toe thru the tulips!” What a show!! ❤️
Probably the best TV series ever made. I can't think of another that made me laugh, cry, get angry, feel happy, feel sad, empathize with the characters and make me reflect on my own military career all at once and a lot of the time it could do all of that in one episode. I still remember to this day as a child watching Radar announce Col Blakes death and then seeing my mother sobbing. Powerful, hard hitting and yet hilarious show.
Though Hawkeye's storyline is heartbreaking in the finale, the storyline that I felt was the most tragic for me personally was Winchester's story with the musicians especially when Winchester said " he wasn't even a soilder, he was a musician."

Me too. Mash, Little House on the Prairie, Donny and Marie, Columbo, the list goes on and on. I did with my kids, certain shows we’d watch in the living room. Now they’re all grown up doing their thing lol. When I was young we’d gather at one relative’s for Thanksgiving then a different one for Christmas and the same for Easter. All my aunts and uncles are gone now and I miss them. Our children are growing up too fast and families don’t really get together like we used to.
I've enjoyed mash for all my life,since my sister introduced it to me. She's gone now,at the age of 57,she kept all the VCR tapes but I still miss her she died of cancer,but till this day I watched mash cause there is a meaning to it, what America's best nurse and doctor did for the people who fought for our country, and never forgotten.
Carmen, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my sister in 2012. She was 61. She taught me how to read when I was only 4. I miss her and still occasionally find myself thinking, "I need to call Harriette."

I watch this finale every year or so...still makes me tear up, every time. Especially when Klinger is saying goodbye to the Colonel, Jamie Farr and Harry Morgan are holding back tears for real. Beautiful ending for my favorite show
When Hawkeye realizes the chicken that the lady killed was her child, THAT BLEW MY MIND! I knew that there had to be a tragic event but even then, seeing Hawkeye lose it, start bawling and that "scream" was unnerving! Alan Alda's performance in that scene was unbelievable. He was and is an amazing actor! This show was so great! Every character got a chance to shine. Klinger got some episodes focused on him. Father Mulchay as well. Radar too. Nobody was left out. Henry Blake was my favorite, but Col. Potter was as amazing in his own way! Trapper again a Favorite! BJ Honeycutt while not Trapper, was also good in his own way! Frank Burns, EPIC! Larry Linville was such an underrated actor/character/whatever. He may have been a butt of many a joke but Larry was ALWAYS ON POINT! ALWAYS THERE FOR A LAUGH! So many changes yet any other show it would have crashed, but M*A*S*H not only didn't crash they kept firing and all cylinders! That showed the true dedication that these actors had! Loretta Swit, another amazing and so talented and beautiful! Charles Emmerson Winchester III, the pompous goof who had a warm heart and a giving soul! These characters were LOVED, RESPECTED, ADORED, AND REVERED for their work, their dedication, honesty, and true love and belief in their show! They are all truly amazing and wonderful people!
I much prefer BJ, Col Potter and Charles Emerson Winchester than the ones they replaced. Had far more depth and layers to their characters. But I agree everyone got their chance to shine. A real ensemble.
Well, to be honest, he never thought the baby was a chicken, that was the false reality his mind threw up when he repressed the memory. The Psych doctor had to get him to see the truth his mind was hiding from him.
That and the final goodbye are the two scenes I remembered most clearly. And the musicians.😔 I remember screaming oh NO!, when I first saw him recall what happened on the bus.
I missed a lot of years of MASH. Where was Radar in this final episode? I don't recall seeing him at all. Did he get transferred, sent home .... get hit by gunfire?
120 million people watched this when it aired--most ever for a series finale. I was at university. Now I'm damn near retired. The spirit of this show has stayed with me in the workplace. Thanks for the loop!
My memory of watching this final show was with my friends at the Harbour Castle Hilton in Toronto, the hotel had created a M.A.S.H. themed party. It was packed out, yet really quite silent as we all watched the show, absorbing the sad fact of saying goodbye to a cast we all knew so well and a show that we all loved. It wasn't just the end of a show, for everyone who watched this it also marked the end to a chapter in our lives, regardless of age. I was only 26, and here I am now 65, it just doesn't seem possible that this was 39 years ago. It's a time in my life that I wish I could touch again. P.S. By the closing scene, there weren't many dry eyes in that emotionally packed ballroom.

I could only imagine what it was like when MASH went off since I wasn't born yet but there was a time when these huge finales just meant so much more than just some tv show ending. The finales of MASH, Cheers, Magnum, PI, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Cosby Show, Seinfeld, Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond and The Sopranos were these huge events that would take over the whole night they aired. I remember when other channels didn't even bother putting on anything while they aired because they knew they'd get creamed. I remember the Seinfeld themed parties hosted that night, Bars being packed with people all there just to watch these finales, people threw Cheers a parade that evening. I don't even know if people even all get together to watch anything anymore since Tv like everything is so divided now. Those were magical times, man.

This was a national event. Everyone remembers where they were when this aired. I was in college and the whole dorm, all 12 floors, were watching this episode with a giant party. Nobody went out. For once, there was nobody in the laundry room so I took advantage and threw in my clothes and ran back to catch the show.
Every time I watch this I end up a bawling mess. I can't even imagine all the hell people go through in war. Maybe some day there will be no more war and people will just figure out how to get along.
The best show ever, nothing comes close. It was like tuning in weekly to check on the family. We laughed when they laughed, we cried when they cried, it felt so natural to care for them. My dad, who retired from the Army in 1970 when I was just six, was so similar to Col. Potter it seems surreal now. He and I never missed an episode together, including this one. He is gone now, Fort Sam Houston his final resting place. The most humble hero and fantastic father a kid could ever hope for, thanks for everything Pops.
I did AIT at Ft. Sam in 1997. After a few years later I transferred to the Air Force before my ETS with the Army was up. Never had a break in service and now 26yrs later I'm disabled and my career is at its end.

It is a part of you that you will never lose its like the line in Hotel California - "... You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...".: At first you feel the sharp pangs of loss. But trust me, you eventually realize your service is relevant to your day to day life and will be a comfort to you instead of pain.
Simply my favorite TV show of all time. I was a junior in college when this final episode came out, and we had a big watch party at my apartment with pizza and pop. Everyone was completely silent during so many parts of this masterpiece. There will never be another TV show like this.

Thank you. The last five minutes of this send-off changed my world forever back in 1983. The fact a friendship between two grown men could be expressed this way on network television, it was miraculous. It was incredibly cathartic after the invested years into them and the show. I swear to God they felt like actual family members and the bitter-sweet feelings of the reality that we wouldn't be seeing them anymore except in the reruns. The ending has lost none of it's power. That line from Hawkeye, 'I'm never going to be able to shake you, y'know. ' Wow. He just cuts to the the real. Still cuts me open every time.
My loyal viewing of this show in my teen years became a hugh influence on my life. I have been an O.R. Nurse for thirty years. I decided in my early teens that being an OR Nurse was my path in life. It was the best decision I have ever made . Thank you M.A.S.H Team for making it easy to take that pathway.
I thought I had seen EVERY episode, many times, yet this one... I only recalled the POWs Charles brought back while looking for a trench when he had dysentery and Hawk's remembering what really happened on the bus. It ripped my guts out then, still does! Never has any show made me laugh or cry more than MASH. I don't think a remake of any kind would work. We had just made it through the worst part of Viet Nam which ran my entire childhood, I think it helped us understand our soldiers more. RIP to these amazing actors who are no longer with us, and many blessings to the few that are. Edit: on a lighter note, gotta love the actual 80s commercials!

Hard to think of one. One of the most shocking and heart wrenching twists I've ever seen. The deaths of Henry Blake, James Evans Sr. from Good Times and Edith Bunker come close.
My favorite show growing up, this aired 28 Feb 1983, a week later on 7 March 1983 I left for basic training in the Army, and after training and all was done in Oct 83, where did I end up, South Korea for a year lol
Sometimes even a TV drama feels so real that it moves you, and it helps when you've grown into it. Still, that's what good actors do when they truly become their characters.
More like a comedy-drama aka dramedy but I totally get your awesome sentiment. These characters become so real to us because of how real they become to the actors and they're not simply "Playing" a character but embodying their characters.
It had it's faults. The show became more and more an anti-war didactic leftist diatribe preaching down-at and less and less of a comedy. The ugly political vitriol lessons blocked all opportunity for comedy. Alan Alda became an insufferable pompous self-important ass that took his freedom and the power of his podium to show us just how vile he can be. I learned only to hate him. I detest the filth today because of it. These "people" truly can't control themselves. Everyone must be as miserable of a wretch as they are. At the cost of escape through humor. I am certain that I do not speak alone. How many laughs for YOU, this episode? hmm? And it's not even all Alan Alda crap.

The liberals are so simple - they have to show their true colors. They can't STAND hearing facts and truth and right. This was the greatest, saddest, happiest, most gut-wrenching episode of any TV series in history. I cried when I watched it when it came out back then and I cried every time I watched it since. Including this time. War is hell - for everyone...
Burns: Well, everybody knows, ‘war is Hell.’ Hunnicutt: Remember, you heard it hear last. Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye? Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy: Um, sinners, I believe. Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.
One of the best TV series ever made. And there will never be any televison series again that even comes close to the amount of viewers and ratings the Mash finale had.

I was born long after MASH had concluded, but my parents watched its reruns and the DVD copies almost religiously. Watching this with my parents during dinner and afterward became a part of my childhood. One day during dinner, my parents put the finale on. I truly can understand how this felt like the end of an era for so many viewers at the time MASH aired. It was bittersweet, and the scene with Winchester finding out the Chinese musicians had all been killed, it really hit hard in the feels. It is a timeless classic.
One of the only telivision series i wish would have never ended. Thank you M.A.S.H. 4077 for giving me some of the best telivision moments ever, some of the best laughs, and some of the saddest moments in TV came from this show and i'll never forget it
WOW! I don't remember watching this movie as a child. I am 54 now. This is definitely one of a kind show! I was laughing, crying and wishing it wouldn't end. To whoever posted this, thank you! I cannot imagine the actors how the crying was most likely real. They were a family!
I'm 50 and I remember this. No disrespect intended. Some of my family were in foxholes. Some were on the protest lines. Some were still farming. My Grandfather was a WWII vet and saw no problem with that view of his family. I think he enjoyed this show because he experienced home away from home as well. BJ painting the bike yellow was perfect
I’m 55 and I do remember watching this. I would‘ve been 12. I don’t think I watched the weekly show. Probably I watched the finale just because you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about it, so I decided to check it out. It was the most watched tv program EVER. And that was before the internet, children. None of this “it was the #1 trending thing on Twitter.” Really, who gives a crap? The storyline with Hawkeye, and especially the Korean mother who smothered her baby - that messed me up for a really long time.
I don't know why this popped up ,but I sure am happy it did . I am 64 now . What a Life It has been so far. This show was a Huge part of our family Life . Then years of Reruns . To see the ending again is what brought it all back . Wow , Hawkeye sure Kissed Hot Lips Good and long did he not ? Best part of my life , Raising our kids Terry and I . But even that had to end . Bummer .
I never missed this show as a kid. It was so different from other programming. Looking back I can say that it not only suspended my disbelief but was one of those rare few shows that really made me feel like I was there living through that experience with the characters that I grew to know so well. I happen to own the last season on DVD but seeing this with some commercials really struck home what a different time we were living in as viewers too. Thank you for posting! I would say only the final scene of Barney Miller with the goodbyes and Barney looking around the empty squadroom remembering those that had left before comes close. Not many finales make me cry like these did.
A more innocent time, for me at least. This was the era of The Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Magnum PI and so many other great shows. We used to go to the grocery store at Grand Union. There was Sears and the Sears catalog. Jamesway was one of the local department stores. We had Rickel but no Home Depot. Kmart but not Walmart. Cereal would come with plastic records, and could be eaten morning noon and night. There was Pac-Man cereal. Saturday morning cartoons were actually good, but not necessarily educational. My brother and I watched Scooby-Doo and super Friends after school, along with Looney tunes and Popeye. No one was telling us how we were supposed to think other than to think independently and respectfully.
This was a show that our family alway watched together. We lived in the country and had sketchy TV reception at times. During the finale, our TV went out!!! It was horrifying. My dad died 25 years ago and would have LOVED to have watched this or have the ability to go back and watch this precious show.
Remembering how sad we all were knowing it was ending and yet planning all week for the final. Your comment made me cry. I remember what a very big deal it was to me, and I can't imagine how I would have reacted if that had happened to me.
My mom did as well, before the Alzheimer's took over. In fact, I am here looking for a fitting clip to use in her memorial service video which I am beginning to put together early. I found it...where BJ and Hawkeye are saying "goodbye", and BJ spells out "Goodbye" in the rocks that Hawk sees as he flies off. A fitting send off.

*Goodbye*Farewell *Amen* 🙏🕊RIP🕊🙏 to them all. They brought more joy and laughter to so many people. They were all incredibly talented, iconic actors and actresses. Nurse Kelleye also passed away. She was the Asian/Hawaiian nurse who was around for most of the series. So many memories of all of these wonderful people. It was a blessing to have been able to watch their work and their art.

I grew up watching the reruns forty years later with my parents, so it's easy to forget how old the show actually is and it really hits when I realise how many of the actors are no longer with us.
My dad, a WWII veteran, loved this show. He would laugh so loud at times and get choked up a bit, too. Me? I loved watching my dad watching this show. I miss them both.

My father is both a WWII and a Korean War vet. In at the tail end of one and out at the beginning of the other. He always used to watch the show as well. In his later years before his dementia, he would channel surf and stop on MASH if he saw it was on.
I'm sorry for your loss of your Dad. I'm a 30 year Air Force Vet 1991-2011 and I laugh and cry with the series...especially when they cover Post Traumatic stuff.

I was in my dorm at college when this final MASH episode aired, and we all crowded into the communal TV room to watch it. We were all in tears and it was one of the hardest episodes to watch because we knew we were saying "goodbye" too, after having all these people, so real to us, as part of our lives for so many years. It was a perfect ending to the series, really the best TV show ever made.

Same here. One of the few shows ever in my lifetime that I watched religiously from the pilot to the very last episode. I loved the old days when it was Pierce and Trapper John was still there with Henry Blake in command. As the show progressed things took a more serious tone, but still stayed funny right to the end. There was just so much going on, Klinger wearing the absolute most glamorous in women's fashion making every nurse in camp jealous of his wardrobe, with his hairy ass legs😅😅😅 Margaret and Frank Burns "secret" affair, there was always more than met the eye and seems there was a little something to keep everyone interested no matter what they were looking for. I dropped off on later seasons of Roseanne, and many other shows of my past, but MASH was one I never got bored with. Over the years I would watch any time a channel was airing repeats throughout the years, and somehow it just never got old for me. I honestly can't think of any other show I was actually into like this one. Not just me either, it was our whole family looking forward to every episode. I really enjoyed Quantum Leap too as a kid, but if I had to choose, MASH was always my favorite hands down.

My friend's dad worked for Ma Bell(remember Ma Bell? lol) when phones were starting to become available to own, and boy he was so mad! I remember him going on tangents about Ma Bell not owning all of the physical phones lol.

Alan Alda was a friend of my neighbors while growing up in Ithaca NY. Whenever he visited he would play tennis with me on their back yard court. He was so funny and so nice. It's such a great memory to have.

It still is the highest-rated single episode in TV history.. and it's unlikely that it will ever be topped. With cable TV and streaming services, it's unlikely that you will get that many people all watching the same show at the same time. There are Superbowls that are rated higher.. but network TV doesn't get the viewership that it used to for TV shows.
I know this is the internet, we're all anonymous........but it warms my heart to see that so many share the connection, love, emotions, etc with this show.....I really like knowing that you all are out there, and that we belong to this special fraternity together

For one, they lost 2 of their 3 top actors after season 3, yet they never missed a beat. As you said, the characters on this show people adored them, connected to them, and really loved them. Plus they tackled issues and problems that were happening for real yet they did it in a very positive and decent way. Agendas and issues weren't rammed down your throat. They were again shown in a way that was respectful and it never took anything away from the show, the show's plot, or the show's entertainment value. M*A*S*H was perfectly casted with extremely talented actors and actresses, the writers were absolutely incredible, and they all were the most dedicated, again talented, and special people/ensemble ever put together. And that carries over I truly believe to us, the fans who are dedicated and love and adore this show and these characters. M*A*S*H is a show that in my opinion is as close to perfection as any show ever has. And I honestly believe that there will never be another show like it ever again.

Arguably the greatest Situation Comedy ever made. I've watched the entire series several times and never tire of it. The casting was magnificent.
Yes it is!! I just love the writing and how quick witted everyone is. I agree that this series never gets old and as someone else commented it brings out all my emotions from laughing to crying to anger and empathy for a "forgotten" war.
I could watch this series 100 times and still could watch it again. The writing is great and the actors do a great job. I wish we could go back to some of these old shows, when we all laughed together instead of being divided.

My Dad a 20 year old Platoon Sgt Tanker was in Korea when the Chinese came over the border. He was highly decorated but never talked about it until one night at 1 in the morning after the two of us had gotten out of work. We were watching a war movie and I asked him if that movie was how it was. He said no and then told me some of the most horrific I've ever heard. He was bound and determined I wasn't going to Vietnam. Oddly he loved this show and watched the reruns all of the time. Maybe it helped soften the inner pain in him. The man would give you the shirt off his back. I once saw him in a bar when a guy pulled a knife on a friend of his. His friend was stabbed but the guy was doing gymnastics before he hit the floor unconscious. I saw the nan that earned the medals. I miss that man. He's been gone 25 years died young at 2 months shy of his 65th birthday.
Thank you to your father for his military service from myself, an honorably discharged US Army veteran from 1990 to 1991, and I hope he was able to soften his inner pain by watching the MASH rerun episodes.

A LOT of them are still with us! Klinger, BJ, Hawkeye, Margaret, Rizzo, Igor and Soon-Lee are all still with us. Col. Potter is dead (he was already in his mid 60's when the series was on) as well as nurse Kellye, Father Mulcahy and Charles. But they are really the only principle regulars who are dead. Unless you count the early years too because both Col Blake and Trapper are dead. But Radar is still alive.

Perhaps the best actors ever to appear in an American television series. Of course, the fact that the script was ingenious helped a lot.
Even though I've seen each episode some umpteen times, I still sit down whenever I see an episode on. It the characters and the way they interact with each other that keeps me coming back for more.
Thanks for this - I can't explain it, and I know I'm a throwback - but the fact it's on VHS ...with commercials - actually makes something remarkable - a pinch more special to me
Same here, Carl. I sometimes watch reruns of Johnny Carson here on TH-cam and almost enjoy the commercials as much as The Tonight Show itself. It's like being transported back in time. I miss the 70s and 80s quite a lot. Though physical time travel isn't possible, we can at least go there in our minds, if only for a little while.

A year ago, I moved to a new city and I finished unloading the truck after 10 PM. I was quite hungry and the only restaurant open was a Denny's. I walked in and noticed all the seating sections were closed and there was a sign that they were only filling "To Go" orders. When I tried to place an order to take home, I was told they couldn't help me and I'd need to use the Denny's App to order online. I explained that I didn't have a smartphone and that I just moved to the city and didn't know anyone else with a smartphone. No matter, they wouldn't help me. That seemed a bit ridiculous.
Now, there are screens everywhere (even on gas pumps) that alternate between advertisements for crap "entertainment," medications to ask our doctors about, products to buy, and abominations of "food" that are full of chemicals that alter our biochemistry and distort our minds and bodies. Plus, real words are removed from the dictionary while non-words are added to it. Society is so lazy that individual letters are dropped from words, so that "please" turns into "plz."
Certainly, there have been advances in the last 50 years, but some things seem to be regressing.
I even enjoyed the game at the end!!
i recently heard someone say this show was male dominated and out of date, what the hell is wrong with people these days, this was and still is a masterpiece, it made me laugh, it made me cry, it still does both to me all these years later. an incredible piece of work.
It does not surprise me. The shallowness of today's people is laughable and infuriating at the same time. Judging one of the best TV Shows ever made, judging a TV show from the 70's that portrays events from the 50's, from the perspective of 2022 given how fucked up and self righteous the world we live in now has become, is like I said, both laughable and infuriating. M.A.S.H. is in the top 3 shows ever made. The actors and most importantly the scripts and dialogue, the witty and hidden jokes, sarcasms and real world character/event references throughout the whole show are like nothing that was ever been done before or after. You have to be very well educated in the first place, to understand all the references from all the jokes in this show. Most people now have no idea who MacArthur was or why is Uncle Tom's Cabin mentioned in an episode that portrayed the racism of an army major, but if you know history and read that book, you will get those jokes and references. These are but 2 examples, there are hundreds more. I strongly believe this show has the best writing and dialogue I've ever seen in any TV show ever.

Watching this show as a child inspired me to become a Paramedic. I went on a call " child fell off jungle gym." It was Gary Burgoff's son. Radar, great guy in real life.

Back in 2001 I lost my wife, six months later my mother and three weeks later my dad. I think that is why I spend so much time watching you tube videos. But, from me I thank you.
One thing this show was trying to teach was to not be ashamed and bottle things up until your in a mental ward. That was an important lesson for men then and now

Probably the best TV series ever made. I can't think of another that made me laugh, cry, get angry, feel happy, feel sad, empathize with the characters and make me reflect on my own military career all at once and a lot of the time it could do all of that in one episode. I still remember to this day as a child watching Radar announce Col Blakes death and then seeing my mother sobbing. Powerful, hard hitting and yet hilarious show.

Though Hawkeye's storyline is heartbreaking in the finale, the storyline that I felt was the most tragic for me personally was Winchester's story with the musicians especially when Winchester said " he wasn't even a soilder, he was a musician."
Some songs can be absolutely ruined for life depending on what's going on while you hear them. I expect that's how he felt about Mozart after that.
I feel the same. In a war zone, such joys are precious. Major Winchester grew as a character so much.

Me too. Mash, Little House on the Prairie, Donny and Marie, Columbo, the list goes on and on. I did with my kids, certain shows we’d watch in the living room. Now they’re all grown up doing their thing lol. When I was young we’d gather at one relative’s for Thanksgiving then a different one for Christmas and the same for Easter. All my aunts and uncles are gone now and I miss them. Our children are growing up too fast and families don’t really get together like we used to.
I remember, MASH was the last thing I was allowed to watch before I went to bed, Later on it was Cheers on Ch4 here in the UK

I've enjoyed mash for all my life,since my sister introduced it to me. She's gone now,at the age of 57,she kept all the VCR tapes but I still miss her she died of cancer,but till this day I watched mash cause there is a meaning to it, what America's best nurse and doctor did for the people who fought for our country, and never forgotten.

When Hawkeye realizes the chicken that the lady killed was her child, THAT BLEW MY MIND! I knew that there had to be a tragic event but even then, seeing Hawkeye lose it, start bawling and that "scream" was unnerving! Alan Alda's performance in that scene was unbelievable. He was and is an amazing actor! This show was so great! Every character got a chance to shine. Klinger got some episodes focused on him. Father Mulchay as well. Radar too. Nobody was left out. Henry Blake was my favorite, but Col. Potter was as amazing in his own way! Trapper again a Favorite! BJ Honeycutt while not Trapper, was also good in his own way! Frank Burns, EPIC! Larry Linville was such an underrated actor/character/whatever. He may have been a butt of many a joke but Larry was ALWAYS ON POINT! ALWAYS THERE FOR A LAUGH!
So many changes yet any other show it would have crashed, but M*A*S*H not only didn't crash they kept firing and all cylinders! That showed the true dedication that these actors had! Loretta Swit, another amazing and so talented and beautiful! Charles Emmerson Winchester III, the pompous goof who had a warm heart and a giving soul! These characters were LOVED, RESPECTED, ADORED, AND REVERED for their work, their dedication, honesty, and true love and belief in their show! They are all truly amazing and wonderful people!

I much prefer BJ, Col Potter and Charles Emerson Winchester than the ones they replaced. Had far more depth and layers to their characters. But I agree everyone got their chance to shine. A real ensemble.
Well, to be honest, he never thought the baby was a chicken, that was the false reality his mind threw up when he repressed the memory. The Psych doctor had to get him to see the truth his mind was hiding from him.
That and the final goodbye are the two scenes I remembered most clearly. And the musicians.😔 I remember screaming oh NO!, when I first saw him recall what happened on the bus.
I missed a lot of years of MASH. Where was Radar in this final episode? I don't recall seeing him at all. Did he get transferred, sent home .... get hit by gunfire?

Flash back to an era when my school chums were an Italian family of eight complete with their Nona and the guys watched Mash every night.

Allan Alda, Jamie Farr, Loretta Swit, Mike Ferrell and Gary Burghoff are still alive on NOVEMBER 12 / 21.
My memory of watching this final show was with my friends at the Harbour Castle Hilton in Toronto, the hotel had created a M.A.S.H. themed party. It was packed out, yet really quite silent as we all watched the show, absorbing the sad fact of saying goodbye to a cast we all knew so well and a show that we all loved. It wasn't just the end of a show, for everyone who watched this it also marked the end to a chapter in our lives, regardless of age. I was only 26, and here I am now 65, it just doesn't seem possible that this was 39 years ago. It's a time in my life that I wish I could touch again.
P.S. By the closing scene, there weren't many dry eyes in that emotionally packed ballroom.

I could only imagine what it was like when MASH went off since I wasn't born yet but there was a time when these huge finales just meant so much more than just some tv show ending. The finales of MASH, Cheers, Magnum, PI, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Cosby Show, Seinfeld, Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond and The Sopranos were these huge events that would take over the whole night they aired. I remember when other channels didn't even bother putting on anything while they aired because they knew they'd get creamed. I remember the Seinfeld themed parties hosted that night, Bars being packed with people all there just to watch these finales, people threw Cheers a parade that evening. I don't even know if people even all get together to watch anything anymore since Tv like everything is so divided now. Those were magical times, man.

P.S. I see you.mentioned the Mary Tyler Moore Show. That had some of the best scriptwriting which was reflected in the amount of awards that the show won every year. And the cast? Well as close to perfection that any director could wish for. Amazing actors playing wonderful characters.
This was a national event. Everyone remembers where they were when this aired. I was in college and the whole dorm, all 12 floors, were watching this episode with a giant party. Nobody went out. For once, there was nobody in the laundry room so I took advantage and threw in my clothes and ran back to catch the show.

Every time I watch this I end up a bawling mess. I can't even imagine all the hell people go through in war. Maybe some day there will be no more war and people will just figure out how to get along.

The best show ever, nothing comes close. It was like tuning in weekly to check on the family. We laughed when they laughed, we cried when they cried, it felt so natural to care for them. My dad, who retired from the Army in 1970 when I was just six, was so similar to Col. Potter it seems surreal now. He and I never missed an episode together, including this one. He is gone now, Fort Sam Houston his final resting place. The most humble hero and fantastic father a kid could ever hope for, thanks for everything Pops.

I did AIT at Ft. Sam in 1997. After a few years later I transferred to the Air Force before my ETS with the Army was up. Never had a break in service and now 26yrs later I'm disabled and my career is at its end.

At first you feel the sharp pangs of loss. But trust me, you eventually realize your service is relevant to your day to day life and will be a comfort to you instead of pain.

Simply my favorite TV show of all time. I was a junior in college when this final episode came out, and we had a big watch party at my apartment with pizza and pop. Everyone was completely silent during so many parts of this masterpiece. There will never be another TV show like this.
Thanks for this upload, this episode is hard to come by. The quality of the VHS is good and the commercials add a bit of nostalgia to the viewing experience.

Thank you. The last five minutes of this send-off changed my world forever back in 1983. The fact a friendship between two grown men could be expressed this way on network television, it was miraculous. It was incredibly cathartic after the invested years into them and the show. I swear to God they felt like actual family members and the bitter-sweet feelings of the reality that we wouldn't be seeing them anymore except in the reruns. The ending has lost none of it's power. That line from Hawkeye, 'I'm never going to be able to shake you, y'know. '

My loyal viewing of this show in my teen years became a hugh influence on my life. I have been an O.R. Nurse for thirty years. I decided in my early teens that being an OR Nurse was my path in life. It was the best decision I have ever made

I thought I had seen EVERY episode, many times, yet this one... I only recalled the POWs Charles brought back while looking for a trench when he had dysentery and Hawk's remembering what really happened on the bus. It ripped my guts out then, still does! Never has any show made me laugh or cry more than MASH. I don't think a remake of any kind would work. We had just made it through the worst part of Viet Nam which ran my entire childhood, I think it helped us understand our soldiers more. RIP to these amazing actors who are no longer with us, and many blessings to the few that are. Edit: on a lighter note, gotta love the actual 80s commercials!

Hard to think of one. One of the most shocking and heart wrenching twists I've ever seen. The deaths of Henry Blake, James Evans Sr. from Good Times and Edith Bunker come close.

My favorite show growing up, this aired 28 Feb 1983, a week later on 7 March 1983 I left for basic training in the Army, and after training and all was done in Oct 83, where did I end up, South Korea for a year lol

Let's be honest..Hawkeye was a sanctimonious, womanizing, alcoholic. I love the show, I own the entire series, but Hawkeye could be an ass.

My grandfather was a Korean War vet. Miss him and this show.
Sometimes even a TV drama feels so real that it moves you, and it helps when you've grown into it. Still, that's what good actors do when they truly become their characters.

More like a comedy-drama aka dramedy but I totally get your awesome sentiment. These characters become so real to us because of how real they become to the actors and they're not simply "Playing" a character but embodying their characters.

MASH aired it's final episode 39 years ago. I have yet to come across a series remotely as good as this one.
It had it's faults. The show became more and more an anti-war didactic leftist diatribe preaching down-at and less and less of a comedy. The ugly political vitriol lessons blocked all opportunity for comedy. Alan Alda became an insufferable pompous self-important ass that took his freedom and the power of his podium to show us just how vile he can be. I learned only to hate him. I detest the filth today because of it. These "people" truly can't control themselves. Everyone must be as miserable of a wretch as they are. At the cost of escape through humor. I am certain that I do not speak alone. How many laughs for YOU, this episode? hmm? And it's not even all Alan Alda crap.

One of the best TV series ever made. And there will never be any televison series again that even comes close to the amount of viewers and ratings the Mash finale had.
The first 3 years of the show were good. After that it sucked.

I was born long after MASH had concluded, but my parents watched its reruns and the DVD copies almost religiously. Watching this with my parents during dinner and afterward became a part of my childhood. One day during dinner, my parents put the finale on. I truly can understand how this felt like the end of an era for so many viewers at the time MASH aired. It was bittersweet, and the scene with Winchester finding out the Chinese musicians had all been killed, it really hit hard in the feels.
It is a timeless classic.
One of their last episodes was 'The Time Capsule.' M.A.S.H. itself is part of a time capsule. 😊

WOW! I don't remember watching this movie as a child. I am 54 now. This is definitely one of a kind show! I was laughing, crying and wishing it wouldn't end. To whoever posted this, thank you! I cannot imagine the actors how the crying was most likely real. They were a family!
I'm 50 and I remember this. No disrespect intended. Some of my family were in foxholes. Some were on the protest lines. Some were still farming. My Grandfather was a WWII vet and saw no problem with that view of his family. I think he enjoyed this show because he experienced home away from home as well. BJ painting the bike yellow was perfect
I’m 55 and I do remember watching this. I would‘ve been 12. I don’t think I watched the weekly show. Probably I watched the finale just because you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about it, so I decided to check it out. It was the most watched tv program EVER. And that was before the internet, children. None of this “it was the #1 trending thing on Twitter.” Really, who gives a crap? The storyline with Hawkeye, and especially the Korean mother who smothered her baby - that messed me up for a really long time.

I don't know why this popped up ,but I sure am happy it did . I am 64 now . What a Life It has been so far. This show was a Huge part of our family Life . Then years of Reruns . To see the ending again is what brought it all back . Wow , Hawkeye sure Kissed Hot Lips Good and long did he not ? Best part of my life , Raising our kids Terry and I . But even that had to end . Bummer .

I never missed this show as a kid. It was so different from other programming. Looking back I can say that it not only suspended my disbelief but was one of those rare few shows that really made me feel like I was there living through that experience with the characters that I grew to know so well. I happen to own the last season on DVD but seeing this with some commercials really struck home what a different time we were living in as viewers too. Thank you for posting! I would say only the final scene of Barney Miller with the goodbyes and Barney looking around the empty squadroom remembering those that had left before comes close. Not many finales make me cry like these did.

A more innocent time, for me at least. This was the era of The Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Magnum PI and so many other great shows. We used to go to the grocery store at Grand Union. There was Sears and the Sears catalog. Jamesway was one of the local department stores. We had Rickel but no Home Depot. Kmart but not Walmart. Cereal would come with plastic records, and could be eaten morning noon and night. There was Pac-Man cereal. Saturday morning cartoons were actually good, but not necessarily educational. My brother and I watched Scooby-Doo and super Friends after school, along with Looney tunes and Popeye. No one was telling us how we were supposed to think other than to think independently and respectfully.
His devastation when he allowed himself to remember was staggering.

This was a show that our family alway watched together. We lived in the country and had sketchy TV reception at times. During the finale, our TV went out!!! It was horrifying. My dad died 25 years ago and would have LOVED to have watched this or have the ability to go back and watch this precious show.
Remembering how sad we all were knowing it was ending and yet planning all week for the final. Your comment made me cry. I remember what a very big deal it was to me, and I can't imagine how I would have reacted if that had happened to me.

My mom did as well, before the Alzheimer's took over. In fact, I am here looking for a fitting clip to use in her memorial service video which I am beginning to put together early. I found it...where BJ and Hawkeye are saying "goodbye", and BJ spells out "Goodbye" in the rocks that Hawk sees as he flies off. A fitting send off.
