Sanath Jayasuriya was one of the most feared batsmen all round the world. We Indians and Pakistanis had a rumour going on that he has springs in his bat. 😂
His wrists were so strong, even a little flick would end up over the boundary.

*That was the golden era of most of the nations.. Sanath Jayasuriya and Arvind DeSilva were Ponting of Sri Lanka. Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Murlidharan were also in team that time and every single player of these have mammoth record against their names. Lanka is a very small island but they make a gritty team won the world cup and got Test Playing status around 1990s and Murli became the top spinner of the world in test cricket. imagine England playing so long but didn't have world cup while Sri lanka amassed many records in few years. Jayasuriya played huge number of ODIs I reckon 430 something his average wasn't great but he was good with ball and was attacking opener. He was very popular in India*

His average wasn’t great but relative to his high strike rate it was very good.

Also Sri Lanka got test status in 1981, after the imperial powers denied it to them for years 😂

Jayasuriya is credited for introducing attacking batsmanship inside the first 15 overs of the fielding restrictions. He's been doing it since 1996.

Sanath was ranked once No. 2 Batsman & No. 3 as a bowler ICC T20 Rankings. He is the only Player to achieve that Target so far in both batting & Bowling.
He has more ODI wickets than Shane Warne.
He opened for Mumbai Indians alongside God of cricket. Blissful times in IPL.

Nick hit the nail on its head about the "poor fielding lately" argument. As a matter of fact, fielding has improved a lot from the old days in all the teams. Earlier only a few players were known for fielding but today, great fielding is almost mandatory for selection.

The context in which this match was played is amazing. The Sri Lankan team played a first-class side only about 2-3 days before this and was all out for something embarassing, like 90 or something like that. In this match, they made 343 in their 50 overs and brought the series alive.

I remember this innings well. Australia were at the height of their dominance, completely dominating England which had carried on from the initial part of the ashes, and Sri Lanka were looking so poor they were losing to England as well although not as badly as they were against Aus. Then this game they got to bat on a flat batting track in Sydney, Jayasuriya who looked completely out of form before this just destroyed them. It was completely against the run of play in that tri series to date.

It's getting near the end of the innings, and they're doing well, so the batsmen try and accelerate their scoring, and take more risks. With 10 wickets in hand, it's time to go all out.
