I'm a Sri Lankan fan! We were a team that could beat any opponent at any given match until 2015. But I'm sure we'll rebuild and come out strong in the near future.

Also check the whole scorecards of the Sri Lankan journey to final. Even though he failed in semi and final, Jayasuriya scored some crazy innings like 79 (76) against India and 82 (44) against England in the Quarter Final. Mind you this was wayyy before T20s and at a time when scoring at 100 SR was considered insane. He was awarded the Player of the Tournament.
Aravinda got all the accolades for his final performance, but he played the most important innings in the semi final against India. Sri Lanka was 1/2 when he came out, but scored 66 (47) which broke India’s bowling.
Jayasurya is first play bat like t20 player at his time....
They scored 398 against Kenya in 50 overs in group match..unheard in those times..also the famous Singapore match where after 6 overs score read SL 70/0 Jayasuriya 66* Kaluwitharana 0*.
Srilanka Dominated World Cricket for a Decade since their winning of world cup in 1996. they have won international major cups for a decade. they have been in Three World Cup Finals 96, 2007 & 2011 & was in three T20 world cup finals. Srilanka was ranked No 1, T20 team for 32 months consecutively by ICC (approx two and a half years). the Major countries England, West indies, Australia, New Zealand, india, Pakistan, South Africa are in fear when there is a match against Srilanka & the possibility of winning a match against srilanka is like 30% for the other team. but now the things have changed.

Cricket has brought a lot of joy to South Asians.
Until 2015 srilanka was one of the best cricket teams in the world with 2 world titles & they unluckily lost 4 world cup finals within 2007-2015 time period. No team has done better in world tournaments than srilanka in this time period. Srilanka is running through a rough time nowadays with sudden retirements of expert players even they were eliminated in the 1st round of 2019 world cup for the 1st time since 1999.

This World Cup was what first got me into cricket. I was 8 years old at the time. It was the last time Australia and the West Indies were favourites to win the World Cup. They were 1 and 2. South Africa did their usual thing of flattering to deceive. But Sri Lanka came out of nowhere and destroyed all the teams early on with their pinch hitting opening partnership before the finals when their middle order did the job. Murali did play in this World Cup btw- he was a key player.

Murali had a "bent arm" due to a birth deformity. the ICC acknowledged it.
South Africa used to be the most dominant team in all formats. They were no. 1 in all 3 at one time despite choking in icc tournaments. But they ruled world cricket from 2008-2013 and now it's just depressing.
But never won any world cup

Common ! Its only thta teams like New Zealand and even Englnad became really good. Until very recently, about 2015, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Pakistan were formidable teams and they were much better than teams like New Zealand. And England was continually trashed specially in limited-overs..

Opening pair of Jayasuriya and kalu did not work up in the finals of 1996 nor did in the semis, but up to that in group stages and quarterfinals did work really well.
Jayasuriya became the player of the tournament as a result. They were given orders to exploit the initial field restrictions and destroy opponents opening bowling attack because of the fact Sri Lanka had a extremely solid middle batting order and would build up on nothing on the board. So as i feel experiment did work.
Aravinda in my opinion is the best batsman i've ever seen (i might be biased as i am sri lankan 😉) and i really think he played in the wrong era.

Aravinda De silva is the greatest batsman in Sri lanka ever produced and in 90's Aravinda is the best top order batsman in the world.
This narrator is some story-teller. The first video I watched from him was the one related to how BCCI conspired with PCB to bring the World Cup to the sub-continent after their 1983 win. So... India-Pak co-hosted in 1987 - only for Australia to win it 🤣
SL are still a decent test team - first south Asian team to win a test series in south Africa and 3rd team to only win a test series in south Africa.

Ok, this video is not talking about just the finals. It explains the whole world cup series. Yes openers failed in the final. But they dominated the series. Jayasuriya and kalu invented T20 cricket. They are the reason players like sewagh and criss gale exist. They put the trend out and everyone followed. Before them, any coach will tell you to build up the innings. Start slow, get familiar with the ball and play stokes after. And Jayasuriya and kalu came in completely turned it upside down. They started smashing the ball from ball 1. Other teams had no idea how to respond. I remember score cards of 100 runs in 5 overs. At that time Jayasuriya held the records for fastest 50 and 100. If you can remember how the Matrix revaluationized the movie industry that's what jaya and kalu did to cricket. And Gabe yes players should be safe but at that time the cotravercy and the conspiracy against Sri Lankan team was a big part of why aus team didn't come to Sri Lanka. ( There were lot of back stories to it) I mean other teams came. India, Pakistan, ect.. except for those two. Sri lanka was unbeaten trough out the series. I understand Its hard for you to grasp coz you are only familiar with cricket only little over a year. We lived trough it. ( No offense ,😚😚)

I agree. Great story, but there was no game. ALSO the semi final win vs India was an epic task in India. This video was about making the Australians the baddies. Which we were when they played in Australia. The world cup 'boycott' was because of security and the Windies and Aussies forfeited those games. Pakistan does not host games anymore and the ICL in India was cancelled. One year the IPL was played in South Africa due to security concerns.

This was a great win for the Lankan Tigers. And probably it was celebrated by the whole Indian Subcontinent including India and Pakistan coz everyone hated Australia unanimously.

I'm commenting after 2 years of posting this video. I guess you have to review and revise some of your statements you made in this video. Every single country have and had their down times but it doesn't mean they are bad. Sri Lanka does have a world title, icc champion title, 6 Asia Cup titles, a T20i tile and long list of records under their name. And right now they are the only team to win 12 consecutive ODI games and also get all 10 wickets of the opponents in 12 consecutive games and counting.
The Aussie umpires weren't being biased they were enforcing the rules as they were written at that time.
The ICC actually changed the laws soon after this to accommodate Murali's action.
He was being called for chucking because his arm was bending past 5 degrees which was the limit for spin bowlers at the time.
It was increased to 15 degrees and he stopped getting called for it.
They bent the rules for him as much as he bent his arm.
He didn't bend his arm on purpose, it's been said so many times before but nobody listens, that his arm was naturally bent due to a birth deformity and he just cant forcefully straighten it physically even if he wanted to without snapping his arm in two, but yeah chucking they say whatever that fits your agenda I guess.

Guys between 1996 to 2014 Sri Lankans have won 3 ICC Trophies and 4 other finals. Their stats are much more amazing than England. They have dominated the limited overs cricket. By this era It was Australia,Sri Lanka, And India who battled to get into the world cup finals. They had bowlers like Murali,Rangana Herath,Ajantha Mendis, Chaminda vass, arguably the worlds best all rounder maybe next to Jaque Kallis Mr.Jayasuriya, arguably the worlds best wicket keeper batsman Sangakkara, mastermind Jayawardana. Their records speaks for itself. Please do some better research.
