Albert Wesker 1969 They should have. They don’t even focus on zombies in most of the films. Resident Evil 7 isn’t even about zombies. Not a single undead. It instead focuses on some crazy cannibal family. There are these creatures that echo zombies that attack you behind every door.
I'd also argue the female lead in Dawn was not a throw away character. She starts weak and grows, that's her arc. She's useless to the others because she's pregnant and can't be trusted to handle anything but she learns how to shoot and even learns to fly the helicopter in case something happened to Flyboy. Hell, she's the reason they survive in the end!

I am from Monroeville, sadly I think the only thing left in the mall from the movie is a small bridge over a pond. They even had to petition to keep it a few years ago! Also there is a Zombie Walk every year at the mall, and they often turn one of the empty stores into a little museum around that time.

and you have to learn reading because he said ONE of the best directors of all time. and i gree, even after watching stuff from kubrick, hitchcock, spielberg, lynch, fincher and what not. also, even if he says that it's his favorite director. so what? you can't compare romero's dawn to the dead to, let's say, spielberg's duel/jaws or hitchcocks psycho/the birds. even in the horror genre there is too much difference in style. if you love zombieflicks, romero is your fav director. simple as that!

did you know that in the Japanese version of Dawn of the Dead, they had to put an explanation in the film to explain the cause of the zombie virus. it turns out that a planet outside our solar system exploded and the rays from the explosion hit earth and that is what caused the undead to rise.

The scene where that guy gets his vocal cords ripped out makes my stomach turn every single time. I'm not the kind of person to get grossed out by gore, but that makes me not want to watch the third movie. That, to me is the sign that George Romero is the king of zombies.

Day of the Dead is one of my favorite films, simply for Bub. I damn near shed a tear over a flesh eater. Partly due to Frankenstein's character set up of him, his eccentricity as an actor really made Bub come alive on his own, no pun intended.
I'm going outta box saying this, but I'd say that *_Day of the Dead_* may be my personal favorite out of the original Dead Trilogy (or entire series). I enjoy the underground military-science facility and the crew's futile attempt to find a cure. I also love how it has an actual human antagonist in Captain Rhodes, he feels like an actual threat to the protagonists more than the zombies themselves. It also shows how living isolated during a zombie apocalypse could cause severe mental deterioration. And the amazing music score by John Harrison (the same guy who'd go on to direct the _Dune_ miniseries in 2002).
Loved the Jamaican dude the most. He was the most human out of everyone.

I actually loved the soundtrack for Day of The Dead. Had one of the best antagonists and Bub is my favorite zombie, in one of my favorite zombie movies.

I have to respectfully disagree with your comment about the female characters in this series being badly written. If I may offer my humble defense, I think Romero's female characters are one of the most interesting aspects of his films. Barbra always gets criticized for going crazy and being useless, but I personally agree with Judith O'Dea's take on it: she's just responding in the way that most people probably really would react in that situation. In the case of Fran, she's pregnant, and as the film goes on she has to stand up for herself to show the guys that she isn't just their "den mother." Note how they accept FlyBoy despite his incompetence but leave her for household tasks. Then there's Sarah, who's the hero of the film and stands her ground against Capt Rhodes throughout. Yeah, Fran does seem a bit useless in that particular situation, but I wouldn't say that scene represents her or the female characters of the Dead series overall.
Agreed. All of them were great and had excellent character arcs IMO.
Sarah and Remake Barbara are my favorite characters from this series. One of my favorite parts of Day is when she gets slapped in the face by a hysterical Miguel and she just gives him a cold stare before he crumbles in despair. It's like the exact opposite of the Night scene where Ben slaps Barbara for freaking out in classic movie female tradition. I honestly think it might've been an intentional call back.

The zombie movie sub genre is well known to go through peaks and lows in terms of relative quality and popularity that have been on going since White Zombie (1932). However, the sub genre has probably become most popular in the mainstream since Resident Evil and 28 Days Later (both 2002) than it ever has before including when I call the "Golden Age" of the late 60's to the mid 80's! Peace...
How about they doing something they’ve never tried before...a zombie movie where people actually do things right and stopped acting stupid and survived.

Dawn of the Dead is my favorite, the original. My favorite character is homie. Guy is about to commit suicide and then just says "fuck it!" and proceeds with just one bullet to fight off the zombies and gets to the helicopter. Love that scene so much!
in the original plot for the movie he was actually going to pull the trigger on himself, and the pregnant woman was going to kill herself with the blades of the helicopter.
I got to see Day at a midnight showing in early 86... I loved it from the start and the soundtrack by John Harrison (Creepshow composer and Tales From The Darkside as well) is unappreciated and amazing.
I really like how you addressed the found-footage style in Diary of the Dead. It doesn't look realistic at all, and that ruins the whole idea.

Not really. Watch how modern people are as far as filming things with their -Smart- phones and then take into consideration how obsessed those same people are with uploading that content to their -Social- media accounts so they can get Twitter -famous.-
I would guess that was the idea of having them nonchalantly filming like that. Not sure why James and so many people don't understand that. Romero always had relevant social commentary in his films to remind people that we real-world humans are far worse monsters then the zombies in his films.
I thought it was sad that Romero, who is considered a pioneer in the genre, made a "found footage" movie that was just trendy at the time and totally unoriginal.
Overuse of screens can lead to loss in tissue volume in the grey matter area of our brains (the front lobe). This is the processing area of the brain responsible for prioritising and planning. Another affected area is the insula, the core circuit for mediating compassion and empathy for others. By giving children smartphones at an early age and allowing them an almost uncontrolled access society is creating an army of the living dead, without the ability to feel empathy or plan for the future. And so I believe there are teenagers today capable of emotionelessly filming their friends fighting for their lives or dying . I belive there are more of them than you think.

George Romero is revered here in Pittsburgh. So much so that our local theme park, Kennywood, gets a Romero theme for a few weeks in October. Nothing goes together better than Funnel cakes, rollercoasters and Zombies.

George was a pure brilliant genius with the whole franchise, and everything after Day is him putting all his ideas onto the big screen that didn’t make it into his day movie.

The best part about down of the dead is the way during other movies you say to yourself "if i was in that situation id do...", in dotd they act realistically, so you don't really have any "what i would do moments". Its rare in films so when you see it, it definitely gets you more invested.

I always found Day the darkest, the most iring and disturbing zombie movie ever. I've been always a fan of this flick. Also, I just love how Romero turns the tables by making humans monsters to the point that when Bub becomes more human he kills for revenge, not feeding instinct. Which, makes him an assassin.
Not to mention the gore!

I remember watching Day of the Dead as a young teenager, with a deep affection for zombie flicks. I remember vividly when that dude that gets bitten and gets his arm chopped off uses like a torch to cauterize the cut. That stuck with me so much.
Romero is a visionary, for sure. Master of gore, and the practical effects are amazing, even today.
I always liked Dawn better than Night. It was much gorier, much scarier, and much more dystopic. Of course, watching it when I was 12 didn't help..

Also yes Barbra (Night) and Fran (Dawn) were depicted as weak. However Romero regretted doing that and that's why Sarah (Day) was written as a strong character.
I took a trip to Monroeville for Living Dead Weekend 2018 it was Dawn's 40th anniversary. Yes the mall is more modern but if you're a fanatic there's enough left to let you know where you are! The entire cast of Dawn are great and very friendly people.
The best trilogies are the ones where you can't decide which is best. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Evil Dead, and Romero's Trilogy of the Dead!
Some of these I have no problem deciding which is best.
Joe Pilato (who plays Rhodes in Day of the Dead) also turns up near the start of Dawn of the Dead as a police officer. I don't know if its the same character or if Romero just reused the same actor.

@@bradpaton3927 They were filmed YEARS apart but the zombie apocalypse must've really carried on in fits and starts. Like, 1978 being a particularly bad year, but some progress made for humanity to survive through to 1985, in the early months of which everything went quickly to shit again.
You have to see the continuity, such as it is, as all the films being set at roughly the same time, probably in order. The later post-2000 ones featured lots of technology that wasn't available "yesterday" in 1969 or whatever, but they are just films after all.
There's a loose continuity, some characters are given one, a bit, even if it doesn't make sense in an utterly concrete scheme. But films don't have to be like that, because they're written for normal people to enjoy, not obsessive rule-followers!

Kinda wish you talked some about the remakes. Like how Dawn's 90's remake kinda fixes what few flaws was in the original such as making Barbra not a throwaway character. Though I understand this purely about the Romero ones.
Night's remake was the good one that you are implying, Dawn's remake had the fast zombies and other shit that ruined it.
Yeah I mean night, but I feel Dawn is fine as well, Its not as good because it looses a lot of the atmosphere; but I don't care about how zombies move, thy are fictional and their rules can be whatever is needed to try an tell an effective story. Both imo are FAR superior to Night 3D.

You maybe didn't notice but one of the policemen in Dawn of the Dead who was trying to run away with boat is actually the same actor who played captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead. I also love these movies (mainly the origunal trilogy + the remake from 1990).

Did you know the working concept for Land of the dead was that it was going to be direct sequel to the super mario brothers movie where Mario is dead, and luigi and king koopa changed their names to hide their tragic pasts while the zombie apocalypse was manufactured by the Boos in order for them to take over the human world? Its title was going to be "Super mario bros 2:Dead Reckoning"

I wish more people would talk about the 1990s remake. I love how they modernized Barbara's character while keeping her vulnerability (not just a generic female action hero you'd see nowadays) and the zombies looked fantastic! I feel like it's very underrated when compared to the other films in the series.

Day of the Dead is by far my favorite zombie movie. Always been a big Romero fan since I was a kid.
I don't have tattoos, but if I ever got one, I always imagined it being Bub holding the revolver before shooting Rhodes

I haven't seen any of these but I really liked your review of Diary of the Dead. It was really funny especially when you pointed out the two cameras and how they wouldn't fit together like that.
Quarantining gave me time to discover new movies. I loved Creepshow so I decided to give a try to Dawn of the Dead. It truly blew me away by how capitvating it was ! Honestly I was expecting schlocky B-horror stuff but I fell in love with it. I was a bit disappointed by Day of the Dead, which I watched right after and almost instantly forgot except for a few death scenes. Great review !
