      I do have a pair of recreational skates that look like "figure skates" but aren't because the blade profile/"toe pick" (pathetic excuse for a toe pick) aren't suitable for jumps and spins. Maybe I'll do a video with those ;)

      @@natsskates Yeees. Please. I want to know how much better actual, good skates are, compared to the rental ones. Everytime I ice skate, I wonder, how experienced skaters would do on the rental ones(because I know the rentals are bad, and I've never tried good skates myself).

      My first 6 months of figure skating I spent on "recreational skates". I was able to jump but couldn't start spinning on one foot, so they were hindering my progress. It was only after I got my Jackson Elles with a Mirage blade that I could start spinning beyond a two foot spin.

    You are doing really well! I taught figure skating for 20 years, I hope you don’t mind if I could give you some advice on traveling in your spins. On your one foot spin and/or your back spin...when you start to pull your free leg in, try to keep your knee turned out slightly, instead of turning your knee forward (up) and when you start to push the leg down, keep your knee turned out, slightly. Keep your hip stable don’t let it drop or turn in. When you get into the scratch push the heal down and pull toe up, keeping a slight knee turn out. Sometimes the knee turning in can pull your hip, just enough to cause the travel...
    you will notice that your first part of your spin is balanced and centered and you have really nice turn out of the free leg and strong hips, but when you start to pull in you are getting pulled to the inside when the knee turns forward and up, probably because you hip drops a little bit.
    This also will help your sit spin and camel, keep a slight knee turn out.
    Your salchow is nice! Really high with a strong knee bend and lift. Make sure on your toe jumps and loop that you are using your knees for lift and height not just your ankles, off ice can help with that too. Also, on your loop, flip and lutz do not let the free leg, knee turn in to much, you need that slight knee turn out position for those jumps too. I can’t wait to see you next video, you have really accomplished a lot... keep going!

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for those tips, I'll definitely keep that in mind. Yes, I do need to use my knees more on the toe jumps for sure.

      Work on your bunny hop and really try to vault off your toepick. If you do the same in your jumps, have your toe pick be the last thing that leaves the ice, they'll be much higher without too much muscle effort. At this stage the height of the jumps is more about technique than how much muscle power you put in. Also entering your jumps with more speed will help.

    Hi Natalia, I just came across your progress videos and they're really inspiring! I'm 21 also in university and really want to pursue ice skating. I was wondering, when you first started did you take classes? I'm thinking of signing up for the group classes the rink in my town offers for adults, but I'm indecisive because I'm trying to save money for after I graduate. If you did take classes, would you say they helped you a lot? Thanks again for posting these videos, they give me some hope for myself!

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sorry for the late reply!
      I too was a broke uni student when I started. I was fortunate that my uni offered beginner group FS lessons, and it was $35 per term, for something like 8-10 lessons. I also practiced on my own as much as I could so that I could go to the group lesson each week as a much better skater and learn more. There were a couple of 2-month stints where I joined a figure skating club and took group/private lessons 1-2x per week, when I could scrap up the cash.
      I would say that if job prospects look good for you, take the lessons now. You'll probably be in a lot of student debt either way, so what's another couple hundred bucks? But you know your financial situation best.
      It is only now that I've graduated and have a full time job that I can afford proper lessons with a coach.

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot to add, check out my online coach Laurie Johnson Krueger! She's only $30 USD per month, so that's a good affordable option if you're real strapped for cash. That's how I made all of my progress in the second year. You can find her on Facebook or elementsthatshine.com. 😊 I'm actually still sending her videos even though I have an actual coach. She has a lot of experience and offers a lot of good insight.

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a very good chance that your sit spin travels due to your entry. It's all about the entry, so be sure to work on that with your coach. To fix the back (I also had a curved back before) you can do two things: 1) focus on your shoulders facing the ceiling (I know it sounds weird, but it basically means focusing on your shoulders being upright/vertical, so you may have to use your back muscles to achieve that), and 2) bend your elbows slightly rather than keeping them fully straight, which I also used to do, but don't bend them too much to the point where your lines no longer look nice.

      @@natsskates it's frustrating because with skates I stand at 6'6. So everything always feels like I sway side to side. Today I had an awful practice and I test tomorrow. One day at a time but I just want the process to happen already .

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarxBrown it took me A YEAR to get my back spin so trust me I know what you mean. I insist that you don't give up.
      The key is to keep a core twist to the right side (if you're a CCW skater) on the entry and the entire way through the spin. To do this, pretend you're holding a large beach ball on the right side of your body. On the RFI spiralling entry your left arm should be curved in front of your body and your right arm should be straight BEHIND you, and your free left leg should be at a 45° angle behind you rather than completely behind you. As you do the 3 turn and start spinning, your arms will assume the beach ball on the right side position, and your free leg will either be straight or slightly bent or bent in a lowercase h (play with the free leg and find the most comfortable position for you). Keep a strong core twist to the right with your arms holding a beach ball on the right side and do a few rotations until you pull in.
      I hope this helps?

      I started by taking group lessons at my university rink, taught by members of the varsity figure skating team who are skaters but not coaches. Then I took a few lessons here and there at skating clubs, but I was coachless for a good 6-8 months of my skating journey.
      Online coaching is super easy, I send her clips of myself through Facebook Messenger and she critiques them. Only 30 USD per month. If you're interested in contacting her, see the details I provided in the description.
      I'm finally meeting her this summer. Travelling to North Dakota where I'll be working with her and her husband for 5 days on the harness and off the harness, which is why I'm hoping to land those jumps. She thinks I'm ready and will land them. 😁⛸️⛸️

    Congratulations on your amazing progress, I hope to reach this standard this year :). My question is with lots of these skills, did they click with you once and from then on there you were able to improve? For example, I can’t do a backspin at all and I try so hard. I’m waiting for the day it finally ‘clicks’ but I’m losing hope 🧐

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well my friend, you're in for an exhilarating experience with the backspin. I had started working on it at the end of my first year of figure skating (no coaching). I continued attempting it for the next 7 months (no coaching) and didn't really get anywhere. Then in July I finally signed up with my online coach and started working on it with her vigorously. It took me 7 months WITH my online coach to finally get the back spin you saw in the video. And guess what? I finally got it, it finally clicked, it stuck around for a few sessions AND THEN WENT AWAY (back to a shaky back spin where I would rock back and forth on my blade). Now it's coming back to the one in the video, but slowly. It's a very rocky journey, the backspin is the Evil amongst Evils. So keep trying. Persevere. It may take you many months to get a somewhat decent backspin, even if you have a coach. And it will take YEARS afterwards to get it to look "professional".

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trust me, nothing was more mentally challenging or frustrating than the back spin. Sometimes it made me want to quit. My advice: do not spend more than 10 minutes on it per session, or else it'll psych you out. And don't give up. You WILL get it. It might take months or years but you WILL.

I don't have a coach right that can be there for me in person. However, this June I'll finally meet my online coach and do 5 days of training with her, and in that short time period I plan to land the axel and double Sal, but that's because she's really good. How do you get height on jumps like the loop/salchow ? I’m fine with toe jumps but anything else 😅🥴

    • @natsskates
      @natsskates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm completely the opposite. My toe loop is still shady, and I have zero height on the flip. And let's not even get into the Lutz.
      The key to getting height on edge jumps is NOT so much strength as it is the timing of all your limbs, AND making sure that your toe pick is the last thing that leaves the ice.
      On the Salchow, at the last minute on the hook before I leave the ice, I rock onto my toepick and that vaults me into the air. Also, I use my arms in a scooping motion. I scoop down, and then scoop up in perfect unison with my free leg swinging up.
      On the loop you definitely need a bit more power than the Salchow, at least for me. I'm still not getting the height I would like on that one. Here the key is to also rock onto your toepick before you leave the ice. But also you want to have a very strong bend in your skating knee and ankle, so that your skating leg acts as a spring. Same thing for the Salchow actually, but for the loop it's even more critical if you want height.
      Damn that was a long rant.
