What Sam is saying is 100% true-- gratitude is essential. For decades I suffered from anxiety & depression and struggled with alcoholism & drug abuse. I am now enjoying a contentment and serenity I never knew was possible because I live by three main principles: Be kind to myself and others. Keep it simple. Always remember to be grateful.
I was trying to nail three things today which could be, are sometimes, should be always, the foundations for my life. You did it for me at the end of your post. Thanks.
The example Sam uses about rushing and missing the beauty right in front of him is the point I try to stress to my friends and family. Slow down, take a moment and enjoy. It was something I learned from my father before he died. He was careful to take moments and just enjoy those around him.
Well there is a limit to how much time one should take to enjoy the moment so they aren’t wrong most of the times. Enjoying most of these moments don’t have to take a long time.
In the Book 'the Island' by Aldous Huxley, the society on the Island trained birds to shout 'attention' and 'here and now, boys' to constantly remind people to pay attention to what is happening in the present moment and not be constantly distracted by thoughts of the past and the future. It's a powerful and important message which can not be repeated too often.

This may be one of the most important conversations I have ever seen on the internet. Despite recent dramas, Sam Harris is still a living legend and I'm so glad I can live at the same time with him, Peterson, or even mentioned Huberman and Attiya!
And yet all of what Harris has said here has been said before, many thousands of years ago, by several of the ancient Stoics. Most notably Seneca in his _Letters from a Stoic._
I would leave Peterson out of that equation. He makes some adroit points about psychology but his grounding is lacking in the realms of philosophy, politics, and economics. He won't be remembered in 10 years other than as a cultural zeitgeist data point. Harris is great and a far more robust logician than Peterson. His arguments around religion are well constructed and thoughtfully articulated. I love him for that. I think some of his political policy ideas are a little primitive but overall Harris is a boss. Did you forget what he said? How extremely ignorant he is? He said “Hunter Biden could’ve have the corpses of children in his basement, I would not have cared… because it wouldn’t compare to the corruption of Donald Trump”. He also can’t take responsibility or admit fault in that he was SOOO wrong over Covid. Instead he doubles down, picturing this scene where there’s a virus so deadly that babies would be dying that people would be horrified and wouldn’t have ANY doubts, skepticism, or even questions about vaccine safety. Watch Harris talk about Trump on the Lex Friedman podcast a few months ago if you want a recent defense of his views there. Criticizing a President of the United States who refuses to commit to a peaceful transfer of power and tries to steal an election is not letting them “have real estate in your head.” There’s basically nothing on Earth more worthy of criticism than a President trying to subvert the will of the people so as to illegitimately retain his power.

Happiness is but a moment, while change causes pain in the moment, but with meaning you can overcome such pain when needed. There will come a time in your life when you would give anything to return to the moment you're in right now-no matter how difficult it seems. @@korbxYou and I both know that this guy won't be able to explain it.
Well, that's very hard for most of us. I'm happy for you that you are presumably so good at recognizing yours.
Thank you Sam Harris.
Beautifully said, beautifully lit and beautifully shot 🙏🏻
Bruh what does Sam Harris know about mental strength. Boy has the strength to figure out he’s somehow never wrong
He’s done meditation retreats which are pretty hardcore
Try doing one if it’s so easy. 12 hrs a day for 10 days
Strength is built in weakness. Someone who has absolutely no weaknesses will not know what strength is.
@@eccehomer8182not thinking is impossible. It’s holding your attention on the present moment instead of being lost in the thinking where you are playing out fantasies getting upset or angry and obsessing with past and future and ignoring what’s in front of you.
@@eccehomer8182That's not what meditation is, my guy.
Sam Harris is amazing. When is the full podcast released?
Monday
I don't think without God you can build mental strength.
I don't agree with many things Sam says but he is no question ahighly intelligent thoughtful dude who makes you think.
Intelligent? Sure, but also not a good enough man to believe. He wanted democratic elections overturned because he thinks his feelings are enough to justify overthrowing governments.
Gratitude can be a habit.
Happiness is but a moment, while change causes pain in the moment, but with meaning you can overcome such pain when needed. We all have our painful demons we must exorcist, like how Mr. Harris got his Trump derangement syndrome. Pride is the deadliest sins, as it is the most painful to overcome/change.
After COVID and the last few years, can’t take a word this guy say’s seriously-he’s tarnished his reputation forever.
By knowing that covid is real and being concerned for the million people in the US who died after a moron disbanded the pandemic response office?
This blew me away, thank you both

After hearing Chris talk about Sam Harris for awhile it’s awesome to see them sit down. A celebration of 1M subs.
Sometimes - Do not do, just be...
Yep, like I tell my wife......to be a middleclass American in 2023 is to be as affluent as the top one tenth of one percent of people ever to walk this earth.....that's a good start on the road to happiness, so let's not complain too much
I didn't know Sam had such a love of reptiles. His pythons are adorable.
There will come a time in your life when you would give anything to return to the moment you're in right now-no matter how difficult it seems. Even our hardest days may one day be looked back on with a longing for their lessons, their simplicity, or the strength they demanded from us. In the future, these struggles might become the very moments we wish to revisit
This is why I’d rather focus on quality of life rather than on hacks to extend longevity….
Such a powerful video
So honest so true
I appreciate Sam, I’ve read his books, I’ve seen him live with Danny Kahneman, and I would not consider him a mentally strong person.
Why?
@@alibabaschultz352he doesn’t support democratic elections lawful transfer of power. He almost had an aneurysm when trump was in the news cycle.
Harris disrespected convict 45.
I really want to reconcile with Sam after his odd comments last year. I stopped listening to him some years ago because his show may as well have been renamed _Trump Derangement Weekly_ , but before that actually I really loved his content and got a lot from his wisdom once upon a time - so I have a Sam Harris shaped hole in my intellect that needs to be filled 😏
what did he say that was odd?
Ya know everyone has their own political views. We are allowed to disagree. If you find him helpful, take his political views for what they are - his views. Try not get so caught up in the fact that his opinions don't exactly align with your own.
@@Yoko4797 The thing about kids corpses in the basement. Look it up.
@@lsmlsm2115they ARE NOT just views. He called for democratic elections results to be overridden. He is literally a wannabe dictator. That is not a “view”, that is a crime against humanity.
My dessert is unflavored Jello. Some of us experienced tragedy in life prior to forming a life worth living.
Brilliant as always
The title of this video doesn’t match the content. This doesn’t seem to address unbreakable mental strength this is more about appreciating the beauty of life
Great conversation. But why was it filmed at the abandoned warehouse from Reservoir Dogs?
@dellwright1407 Reservoir Dogs 2: Doggie Style
Unbreakable metal strength, Sam? That's the most hilarious thing I've ever heard in my life.
Sam looking yolked
It's hard to feel gratitude when you don't know where you are getting your next meal or if you will have a place to live . When money is literally something you worry about.I am trying to be positive for what we have but it's hard.
Where is full episode??
I really like your channel and I know it doesn't look good when people trash guests, but I don't have a whole lot of respect for Sam Harris.
