Bosch To Dremel 12v Max Battery Compatibility Fitment Modification

  • Bosch Owns Dremel but the Bosch Branded 12v Max batteries have a different baseplate then the Dremel ones so they are not interchangeable although they can fit and operate in each others chargers meaning the battery center sections and terminals are the same just different baseplates. Frustratingly they do not sell battery baseplate to make it simple process of swapping them around so I made this video on what it takes to carve the bosch baseplate to work in the Dremel

The newer Dremel 8240-8260 series tools take the Bosch batteries without issue. Edit: The Bosch GBA12V60 6.0 Ah battery (and the discontinued 4.0 Ah battery) will not fit in the Dremels. All other Bosch 12v batteries will fit. I picked up this tidbit on the Tools Tested channel. I didn't have a 6.0 battery at the time of my previous comment and so had to acquire one to confirm.

They did a decent job on the design of those... but I'm still skeptical of Dremel after going through so many 4300 and 8220, I went to the Actual Bosch Rotary tool, and it's (oddly) wayyy better than the 8220.
I had a lot of overheating on the 8220 series. 4300's had that horrible locking mechanism that always seemed to brush against something, completely shred the front ends of those.

@@carterscustomrods My go-to Dremel was a corded Multi-Pro 395 that, aside from periodic brush changes and a plug end that broke inside of the first month, was great for many years. When I decided to get a cordless one, I looked at the Bosch GRO 12V-35, of course. But, although it's available by various means, it's not an official USA product (so no Bosch USA warranty support) and it's a little pricey. So, when I happened upon a Milwaukee 2460-20 for a good price, I got one. It is compatible with all the Dremel accessories. So far, it's been excellent and I would definitely get another one. Just wish it was brushless.

@@GM-gc8gg yeah, the 395's were good for years of use.
I like the Milwaukee a lot, but the feel, and weight just didn't feel right after using it a while. It's a high torque beast though... so if I need a cordless fine router setup, it's hard to beat. But I hated that grip, and collet lock button.
Why can't rotary tools use collet pick latch/levers like the B&D RTX (my favorite corded version over the past 5 years or so... I'm ashamed to admit that lol.)
Plus Bosch here in North America might not be around much longer... keep an eye out for Clearance sales.

@@carterscustomrods you ought not be ashamed of that, I've got a giant drawer full of rotory tools and those B&D's happen to be my favorite as well. I even sprayed one black back in the vanity of youth, however I'd never take the time to do something like that again. The color of the plastic and stickers on a tool are meaningless.

Do you know if you can charge bosch batteries on the new dremel charger?? Wanted extra batteries but not more chargers:/

Dremel is só awesome that you can even use itself to make new batteries. I'll have to do this. The 8220 isn't available in Brazil but I got one anyway. However the charger is 110v and here we have 220v and I can't buy extra batteries, so this mod is perfect for me. I'll buy a kit with 2 batteries and a 220v Bosch charger, adapt the batteries and be on my marry way.
Thanks a lot for the video!

Nice the big issue is getting the battery itself I have some radio and tools that need specific battery and too much time to find them. Then if you do find the battery you have to weld the connection and pain in the AZZ. For my Milwaukee battery I found you can jump start them that Is very helpful.

Pure EVIL that Bosch adds incompatible batteries inside their own brand! The green and the professional (blue) 10.8/12V batteries also use different bottom clips. Same issue with the old 36V professional vs. garden batteries... I'm amazed/appalled that Bosch want to aggravate their own customers like that... :-(
Anyways, thanks a lot for showing the bottom part with clips etc. and prooving it can be removed! ;-) Now I just need to find someone selling new bottom parts (or even just 3D-models for printing)...

I used to use the dremel to actually do my Bosch Batteries. (The 2ah 12v Bosch were only like $12 or $14 on Amazon a few months back... so I stocked up on them. )

I used a Dremel with a cut off wheel to modify mine around 2 years ago, however my newest 12volt Dremel accepts the batteries without any modification.

Cool mod. The battery is just as ugly as the tool so it matches. As long as it works. I've owned a lot of rotary tools in my life. I had a two speed Craftsman NiCad one that didn't last but a couple of years before the battery died but I couldn't get a replacement. I have a variable speed dremel corded one that is extremely powerful with many attachments. I more recently bought a variable speed Hitachi Lithium one that is excellent. These tools are the most useful tools ever invented.

I'm curious as to why you just don't change the end caps since you were successful at getting at least one of them off? Want the other one come off and snap right back on the other?

I'm sure someone that does 3D Printing, would be able to make you replacement bottom, for the battery. Just a thought.

now do the same with a milwaukee m12 battery. My cordless dremel is the only cordless tool I have that isn't in the M12 line.

Oh I thought you had a bad Dremel battery thinking that you had a general cap that would go on the Bosch battery. My mistake. All that said, don't throw away your bad Dremel batteries everyone!
