My current truck has 237,000 miles and is still running great. Hope to keep it that way a lot longer. Thanks!

You're welcome! Glad to help! Let me know if you guys run into any trouble. I was hesitant to do the upgrade because I'm not a "stereo guy" but now that it's done I'm really enjoying the new hardware. 😊

So, you only mess with the XM radio if you care about that? What if you’re just interested in changing to an aftermarket radio? I can just change the radio right?

Hi! Yes, I focus a lot on the XM Radio in this slideshow/video because that is something I use frequently and which was important for me to retain when I performed my radio upgrade. It was a bit tricky (due to things like the special connector needed to adapt the new XM Receiver to the factory antenna wire), but as you can see in this video I got it figured out and it works great. 😊
Obviously if you don't care about SiriusXM radio you can just ignore that. Leave the wires for that hanging loose or tuck or zip-tie them up inside the dash. You can either remove the factory receiver (the part located above the glove box) or just leave it there disconnected. I do of course recommend getting a dual-DIN radio for best fit inside the Colorado, as well as the faceplate bracket and wiring harness adapter shown in this video. Crutchfield does a great service of helping you pick out the correct accessories for your vehicle and I always recommend shopping from them. You might pay a couple bucks more, but it'll save a huge amount of time and "head-scratching" with their custom built plug-and-play wiring harnesses. Thanks for the comment, and good luck!

In this collection of pictures and videos, we look at the process of installing a new stereo in a 1st generation Chevy Colorado including removal of the old one, accessing the SiriusXM satellite receiver (above the glove box), wiring connections for the new hardware, and antenna wiring.
One important thing I learned was that the antenna marked "GPS" on the new radio needs to be hooked up for your wireless Android Auto or Apple Carplay to work. So it's kind of a misnomer, it's not really just for GPS. One other item I struggled with was finding an adapter for the satellite radio antenna. Crutchfield was unable to help with this and I didn't feel like removing my headliner and running a new antenna to the roof so I purchased 10 different adapters from Amazon and eventually found one with the right connectors.
This is the adapter you need if installing a new satellite radio tuner:

The following parts shown in this video was purchased from Crutchfield:
    - Pioneer DMH-W4660NEX
    - SiriusXM SXV300V1 Tuner
    - Metra 40-GM10 antenna adapter (this is for the regular FM antenna)
    - Metra 95-2001 dash kit (black)
    - Axxess AX-GMCL2 wiring interface (this is so you can keep your door chimes)
    - Crutchfield ReadyHarness service (they'll assemble a "plug & play" harness for you - makes installation easier)
The USB dash mount adapter from Amazon:
"PAC Audio USBDMA3 3 Ft. Dash Mount USB Adapter"

So I’m installing a new radio in my 04 Colorado and I’m not sure where I need to run the parking brake wire too. I’ve tried googling it to no avail. Also would I be able to just connect it to a ground and it work right?

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hi Conner! Thanks for checking out my video. So a few thoughts, offhand. Are you using a Crutchfield ReadyHarness or similar product? Or are you hand-splicing each connection? My recommendation of course would be to use the proper harness. This would make it easier to troubleshoot, and also for any future owners of the vehicle (should they decide to replace the radio again, or anything else).
And I'm guessing the radio you're installing has some kind of video playback or streaming capabilities, that manufacturers want to only operate when the vehicle is in park, correct? (if not, you can ignore all this)
Assuming you're hand-splicing, I'd probably try to run that wire to one of the following locations:
      - Parking brake sensor above the parking brake pedal
      - Neutral safety switch
      - Radio ground
      - Other ground, or frame
      - Some radios may require a bypass module, but in my experience this is pretty rare
      - One final idea: some radios may have a software override or "store demo mode" that you can select to play movies. Check your owner's manual
Obviously you may need to test each of those since different radios may function differently. You may also want to put a rocker switch or toggle switch, so you can manually select the position (again, some radios may need this).
Good luck, let us know what you decide and how it works out for you. ☺️

@@CompTechMike so I connected the parking brake wire to an eyelet and grounded it to the radio. I had a harness from Scosche that I connected to my Pionner dmh-130bt radio. I did have to run the red ignition wire to my fuse box with a fuse tap. I wired it to fuse 23 which is an ignition fuse.

Thank you for making this. How is the radio doing ? Any hums or hisses using Bluetooth ? Thanks ! GB

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi GB! Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. The radio I installed in this video was on the upper end of my budget, but it had all the features I was looking for with the exception of a volume knob. Apparently a built-in knob is a rare feature, these days. 🤷 It's working great though. It was important to me to keep satellite radio compatibility, and the Android Auto (both wired and wireless) has been a godsend. No more having to use my phone to navigate, I don't even have to take my phone off my belt - just sit down in the truck, say "Hey Google", and tell it where I want to go. It even automatically made shortcuts to my frequent destinations. I can play Pandora, TH-cam audio, Spotify, even get notifications from apps including Facebook Messenger and Microsoft Teams, right on the screen. I even made the wallpaper the Chevy logo, just because I can, LOL. 😆
I will say that the app to customize some of those functions is a bit "un-user-friendly". You might even call it "user hostile" (haha), but you won't need the app for much beyond advanced customization and firmware updates.
The radio itself is great. 10/10 for Android Auto, SiriusXM, phone calls/Bluetooth, notifications, and HD radio stations. Definitely recommend. 😊

I forgot to mention - since the goal of this project was to convert my factory stereo while retaining my factory satellite radio capability, I did have to call SiriusXM to have my service moved from my old device to my new one. They charge $15 for this, and have the nerve to charge tax on top of that, so $15.75 to have them move your service from your old device to your new one. A bit surprising and annoying, but when these big companies own everything and there's no competition, they can charge whatever they want. ☹

Hi Miguel! Thanks for checking out my video. I'm not entirely sure of your question, but off-hand I believe you've got the "hot" wire and the "switched" wire connected. And this is one way of doing it, but not what I would recommend. A lot of it depends on your replacement stereo, as well (what features and connectors it has). My recommendation is to call Crutchfield and order the correct wiring harness for your your vehicle and radio. They can make you a plug-and-play direct fit harness that eliminates any wiring issues or guesswork, and is the way I did mine (shown in this video).

Hi! Sure. The XM module above the glove box is an optional extra. I like it, but of course not everyone does. Plenty of people just replace the head unit and ditch satellite radio. 😆 Either way, I recommend ordering from Crutchfield. They can hook you up with everything you need.

What are the 2 purple wires. Trying to hook up without the plug and play kit

Hi Logan! This document might be helpful to you:
      pinoutguide.com/Car-Stereo-GMC-Opel-Chevrolet/Chevrolet_2004-2012_Color_pinout.shtml
It appears to indicate that the purple wires are for "serial data connection" although that might vary depending on the exact year and configuration of your vehicle.
That said, I would strongly encourage anyone watching this to pick up the "plug and play" harness. It's only a few bucks and really does make wiring a lot easier, and if for no other reason - think of the people who come after you. If you sell the truck do you think whoever buys it is going to want to deal with a hacked up factory harness? I know I wouldn't, lol. 🤷 In any case, good luck, hope this is helpful!
