Great vid, only counter-point is if your cat is on multiple epidermal medications (one per ear) it is impossible to alternate ears. That aside, this vid was _very_ clear, and helpful.
Your cat has two ears, of course it is possible to alternate ears even if he is on six medications. You know how to do math and how to administer them at different times of the day. Hope your cat feels better.
You mention cleaning the ear each day before applying the new cream to make sure you're not putting it on old dried cream. How/What would you recommend for doing that? wet cotton ball comes to mind?
Thank you for this great video! My vet described what do to but I did not have the medicine at that time. Now that I have it and have watched your video, I feel much better about giving this medicine. Thanks!
Thank you! Much more info than the pharmacy gave me, and vet just said to follow pharmacy descriptions. I've been wondering if i need to clean my cat's ears as i see since residue from previous applications. I did watch another video on application, and they said the medicine does not need to be rubbed in. I wish my vet was more helpful
Every cat is different! But if you can’t rub your cats ear, be grateful that the transdermal route is an option, as for a very long time, tablets were the only option.
My cat is not at all happy with me applying medication, and now she doesn’t even want to sit in my lap. And I don’t always put it on him when he’s sitting in my lap! I find it very stressful, and maybe he’s reading my stress? I feel so house bound, trying to get someone to do this when I go away on the weekend. 😢😮
We were able to teach our neighbor to do it before we left on vacation. We had our neighbor administer the evening application for about 5 days before we left. She felt very comfortable doing it on her own by the time we went on vacation. And we told her that if she missed a dose (forgot, couldn't find cat) not to worry. Not life-threatening.
Every video I watch about this the cat just sits there and let's it happen but my cat freaks out the second I touch her ear no matter how relaxed she is and no matter how much I've been petting her 😭
Same for me, and we had to move to transdermal because she started ignoring and/or theatrically vomiting up all of the oral compounds and pill pockets after four years of taking them with no problem.
Yes, the click will give the same amount of medication. The tip just allows for easier application. I would suggest reaching out to the pharmacy where you purchased it though.
I only see a tiny little bit of medicine coming out so I’m afraid I’m not clicking it right and we are on day two. It should be 16.2 mg so I don’t think I’m doing it right. I’m afraid I would use too much if I keep turning it though.
Hi Misty, Each click is only 0.05ml which is a very small amount of cream. That is intentional so that you do not have to apply much to the cat's ear. However, you should call the pharmacy where you had the Rx filled to confirm the dosage per click.
Cat has cancer and need to give prednisone jell in ear, says every day clean the previous dose ear and then do the other ear. Doing something to both ears is harder than a pill and he isn’t so sick that he can’t run from me, hate to fight with him for his last few months
Question? My cat loves to sleep with me and be petted on head a lot. If I use this compounded cream in his ear, how do I keep from getting the medication on me? Could I absorb it from cat through daily contact?
Yes, you could absorb it if you were repeatedly touching the area where you applied it. Be sure it is applied in the ear tip. If you apply it in the morning, you could use a soft moist cloth to gently wash the area before bedtime. This would remove any excess residue. Feel free to call in and discuss your concerns with our pharmacists.
Today was the 1st time using this pen. My cat likes when I rub his ears.. so that’s not a problem, but my pen has a like sponge tip and it’s kinda hard to tell if there’s anything on it so I have no idea if he got anything. 😩 I’m nervous doing this.. yes I wear gloves but I also have hyperthyroidism and I don’t wanna accidentally get more methimazole in me.
@@kims1941 I pay $42.50 a month. But I think I’m going to go back to the pills, they’re so much cheaper, I can get them on chewy for I think it’s 11.99 a month. And can hide them in his food. he is actually putting on weight finally he was 6.5 lbs it’s been a month and he’s finally 7lbs.
Also my cat sees me coming and will try to run, once I get to him though and talk to him he calms down. Left ear he’s fine right ear not so much. But now I have to give him eye ointment , now THAT is awful …..my sweet kitty scratched the crap outta me the last day I gave it to him.
Hello, my cat gets 0.05 MG of Methimazol 2x a day. She cleans her ears as normally, but when I kiss her head, I can taste bitter taste on my lips! I suppose it's from her washing her ears and gets some medication on her fur. Is it dangerous for her to to digest? She doesn't wash right after the application, but I still worry. Thoughts?
Methimazole is also taken by mouth, so it will not hurt your cat if she were to get some in her mouth. You may want to use a warm cloth the wipe off her head to minimize your exposure.
The one we got is nothing like this. We have to apply a full "rotation" which is like 10 clicks. Also nothing came out of it for wayyy too many rotations, we thought they were broken... then suddenly a huge glob came flying out of the pen. Wish we had the one shown in the video here... lol
Question: my cat is currently getting 2 different transdermal medications. I'm using one ear for each medication and therefore not alternating. Will this cause a problem down the road? Is there an alternate area of application rather than the pinna?
We recommend alternating ears whenever possible. You could either switch drugs/sides every other day or do one drug in the morning and one at night (unless the DVM has instructed a particular time of day for application). Just make sure the medication is on the ear tip for at least 6 hours before wiping away any cream residue. Unfortunately, the ear pinna is the only place that is hairless and the cat won't lick it off. Feel free to call our pharmacists if you have any other questions.
@@TheCompoundingCenter The cat is getting 2 doses of thyroid meds daily in one ear and a daily dose of appetite stimulant in the other. I was afraid to mix medications in a single ear. Is that an issue?
@@curiouscharacter1 We would not recommend putting 2 drugs in one ear at the same time, that's too much cream. However, you can put them in the same ear on different days or times. If you have any further questions I would recommend calling one of our pharmacists.
Hi Dan - The cost is roughly the same, but it may depend on the ingredient needed for your pet's prescription. If you text us the name and strength of your pet's Rx we're happy to give you comparison pricing. 703-779-3301
Our cat is fearful when I use a whole glove. What I ended up doing is getting a glove and cutting the fingers off. I glove my finger with the medicine and the cat does not seem to mind. Then I wash my hands when done. I can get four to five uses from one glove.
Thanks for the help! I came home with this *completely* confused.
I couldn't figure out the instructions but your video made it crystal clear. Thank you.

A washcloth dampened with warm water or a baby wipe works great.

Very helpful, thanks for explaining so simply
this makes it look way easier than it actually is 😭😭 don't expect your cat to be as calm as the example cat!!

Thanks for all the help Caring and Loving my Betty Apple Butter Brown and all the other Cats Marianne Knapp 💜😺
This was helpful. I'm using 2 finger cots (on index finger and thumb) instead of a glove, but wasn't sure where to apply it. Thanks!
Reusable silicone finger cots are great and can be purchased on Amazon.
Thank you very much for this. Very informative and helpful video.
Very good video. I was wondering if I could use a gloved finger. I love how the other cat is watching you.
Thank you Bill. Yes, we would recommend that you wear gloves when applying any medication to your pet.

Clear instruction. Thank you!
Is it ok to do a pill in the morning and the transderm at night?
Your pen looks different than mine And every time I turn it no gel is coming out! My instructions say rotation not click??
Every video I watch about this the cat just sits there and let's it happen but my cat freaks out the second I touch her ear no matter how relaxed she is and no matter how much I've been petting her 😭
Oh no! I guess there are cats that just don't like their ears touched. Maybe a tuna or chicken flavored oral liquid would be better.
Same for me, and we had to move to transdermal because she started ignoring and/or theatrically vomiting up all of the oral compounds and pill pockets after four years of taking them with no problem.
I tried the pill in a pill pocket but my cat throws up. Vet recommended the topical cream but she hisses and runs. At a loss. Please help!
The silicon tip of my click pen broke. Will one click still be the same amount of medication? I use a gloved finger.
Yes, the click will give the same amount of medication. The tip just allows for easier application. I would suggest reaching out to the pharmacy where you purchased it though.
What if you turn the base two many times already?
