    I had the '74 Mego Star Trek figures as a kid. Loved them,! Loved the Apes, loved the DC & Marvel Heroes as well. The Star Trek figures (aside from Lt Uhura) were cohesive.... they matched! This new wave looks like three different toy companies made action figures and branded them Mego.

    The likeness of Takei and Konig in the new models are easily more accurate than the old Shatner and Nimoy models. The newer Doohan one is excellent.

    I guess the hair looks like Sulu. The sculpt is just so soft, it looks more like a store mannequin than an actual person. Still better than that homunculus they called Andre the Giant. Love your stuff Dan, keep going against the grain.

    The 1970s Star Trek line was sculpted after the Filmation cartoon series, so the vintage figures aren't trying to be TV accurate. So the new Mego Sulu and Chekov are supposed to look like their cartoon characters to fit into the vintage line. I'm happy to have new Star Trek Mego figures, especially the re-released Aliens. As a kid who had the vintage figures, I have to agree the vintage figures are superior. But, I like to make lemonade out of lemons, so I also enjoy the new figures for what they are. Cheap nostalgia. My only gripe is no fat bodies are in this Star Trek line. Gimme Harry Mudd! As always, a hard hitting, honest review. Thanks for the entertainment.

    • @DanClassic
      @DanClassic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks John! I didn't know those were based on the cartoon. They should have used art from the Filmation series on the new packaging for context. I know improvements are being made as well so as long as the price is right, I will continue to give Mego a chance. Thanks again, John your comments are always appreciated.

    • @georgealexander141
      @georgealexander141 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL Paul Clarke aka Dr. Mego, recently said that Marty Abrams told him that the original 1974 figures were based on the live action show from the 60s and that the animated series came after MEGO had released the figures. Funny how the animated series came out in 1973 and the figures came out a year or two later. But Marty seems to be holding on to that version of the story.

    • @Forest_Giant
      @Forest_Giant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry John but that's not true. The cartoon and Mego had nothing to do with each other. The sculptors used images from the live-action 1960's series to sculpt the likenesses. I'm not sure who told you this cartoon series stuff but they made it up.

    • @sixdollarman1362

    Like John Wild stated, the vintage MEGO figures were done after the Filmation cartoon. The EMCE releases were great to have and we got Chekov and Sulu who were done to look like the classic cartoon. As far as the nuMEGO figures go, the folks who do the sculpting do a great job. As far as the Bones head sculpt goes, to me it doesn't look so good. The face looks chubby and the likeness to the cartoon is not there. nuMEGO should have just kept with the vintage sculpt Bones. But then look at what they did to the Kirk head! It is amazing seeing these and thinking about that they have been putting out. It is an endless toy line filled with bad shit. Glad you made this video. It was needed!

    What are scalpers I don’t understand

    • @DanClassic
      @DanClassic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scalpers are folks that buy items at regular price for the sole purpose of reselling them at a steep profit. It's typically used to describe someone that does this with tickets to events but works to describe somebody who does it with toys. Depending on where you live it can technically be illegal however it's rarely enforced as it's difficult to prove fault for a misdemeanor charge.

    Another great episode. Or shall I say "Fascinating"? You know I always dig the Star Trek stuff. I have yet to pick up Scotty and Bones. I was really excited when I saw Bones at retail but was immediately disillusioned by the zombie-like looks of the damn thing. I want to get both of them now that they've done the running change on McCoy. I don't think I was even aware of the Sulu and Chekov figures. I think the "Mirror Mirror" Sulu is superior. I hope that at some point in the near future we get a better Kirk sculpt and more live action accurate versions Sulu and Chekov... hell even Uhura could use a revision. I feel like the most glaring issue with the new figures overall is that when you see them all together they do not work as a cohesive line, due to the variations in sculpt quality (and undead McCoy). Either way, I assume that Mego will make more or the original crew and hopefully improve them along the way. It's the only... Logical outcome ;)

    First of all abosolute great review!!!, and I'm glad someone reviewed these figures that was not around when the vintage ones came out. So your decision was strictly off of which ones were better and not the nostalgic part of it. I myself actually owned these original vintage figures when they came out in the 70s, and as a kid we Loved these figures and still do. Hours of super st play time with these bad boys!!They were the only Star Trek we got back then that were well-made and relevant to the TV shows. As far as these new ones the uniforms are excellent the upgrades on the accessories are awesome but the figures themselves are horrible the bodies👎 and the over size soft head sculpts👎 are horrible!! I am not happy with these figures at all. I bought a few simply because I love Star Trek but I will buy no more. You hit the nail right on the head all they had to do was redo the old ones with all the new tweaks(uniforms/accessories)and we would have been happy as hell!!!! To find vintage figures in excellent condition are expensive so getting some retro redone figs would have been cool. Megos new monster line is awesome but they hurt my heart with these new St figures. Again great review and you got your self a new subscriber 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽somebody had to tell the truth🖖its not enuff just to give me a nice box. The Mr. Sulu and Mr Chekov head sculps where used first by the figure toy company.

    Cool video. Although I'm not so sure about the hand painted thing in the 70's. They used a special type of spray paint that sticks to rubber real good. I've been told that type of paint has been environmentally illegal in the US for many decades. That's just what I heard. By no means am I claiming this as a fact. And I must admit that I like the rubber bands because of nostalgia. Nothing else. Just nostalgia. The S bodies seem to modern to me. Like they're just designed to look like Mego's without actually being Mego's. But I'm sure I'm a minority in thinking that, lol. I understand that the S bodies are more durable and long lasting. Out of the original 14, I have 11 of them. I still buy Nu-Mego figures and I've enjoyed them. Thanks for a cool video.

    Im not sure why Checkov has Brown hair 🤔
    The bad thing is that the phaser and communicator are placed on the belt in reverse and the newer figures should have the color updated equipment. Checkov and Sulu are based after the cartoon show. The new phasers handles are too skinny and just fall out of the hands.
    The new bandless bodies suck by the way.
