    The wheelbrakes have been made less effective in both the 747-8i and the 787-10. The reason, according to Working Title, is that they are more realistic this way, closer to reality as these heavy Boeings truly can't slow down that quickly with wheelbrakes. I like their new inertia.

      I’m struggling to slow the 747 down from low speeds to make turnoffs with max braking. These things have phenomenal brakes, after all they have to be able to stop from high speeds at MTOW if something goes wrong. I suspect they’ve gone too far in the other direction. 🥴

    Formidable introduction! Apparently many people who've made similar videos just rush thru showin' off pressing, clicking and turning buttons and knobs... (There's a saying about being unable to explain something to your beloved grandma or a 7 year old)... Gotta say that this was a pedagogical and intelligent introduction and shame you got a mere 37K subscribers (but guess figures are lower for msfs guys). You GOTTA make similar videos regarding (primarily) landing while using VOR LOC and ILS (and then ATC procedures). Desperately sought after! Best regards and have a pleasurable weekend, Andreas from the Kingdom of Sweden (just seriously starting my aviation journey)

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      Auto brakes will come on when they can - typically (and it varies by aircraft) you use reversers until a given speed, then just wheel brakes - to avoid rubbish being sucked into the engines.

    • @stephenmckinnell7791
      @stephenmckinnell7791 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jonbeckettYou don’t know that much about this type of aircraft or their operation, so if I were you I would say I don’t know rather than make something up! Auto brakes don’t come on “when they can”, if set they come on immediately after landing. Reverse is a distant second in importance unless it’s slippery. This applies to Boeings!

    • @Gilles45
      @Gilles45 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I must agree with Stephen on this one. Autobrakes are absolutely not automatic, they don't come on "when they can". They are set to the maximum setting for takeoff in case of an abort and are set to Low, Medium or High for landing, depending on the braking action required. On the A380, the autobrakes have a BTV setting, meaning Brake to Vacate. You choose the exit you want to vacate the runway at and the plane will adjust the braking action to be at turnoff speed at that exit. Bottom line, autobrakes are always used on airliners that have them.

    • @Gilles45
      @Gilles45 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Look at the autobrake control situated just under the gear lever. The RTO setting (rejected take off) is always selected before takeoff, always. And apart from off and disarm, the 747 has multiple autobrake settings that are chosen and set by the pilots. They don't come on when they want or when they can. Sorry Jonathan, but you have this one completely wrong.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gilles45 I didn't explain very well. I meant what you said - the profile of brake pressure will vary according to the aircraft speed, and other parameters. It's not just a "stop asap" function :)

Though manual heading change takes it towards intended destination the aircraft does not intercept the localiser or the guide slope in a manner that it automatically brings it down to runway threshold.The LOC and APRCH buttons do not seem to have any effect.Do you think it could be due update in so far as Xbox users are concerned.

    Curious about something here. Not sure of the relevance but I notice on the PROG section within the FMC, scrolling the pages I see a XTK and VTK error listed. Can this effect the flight plan in a negative way? Everything else appears normal and correct but have been having issues with some flight plans being followed correctly and I see this error a lot, and am trying to determine whether its my error or one of the usual MSFS glitches or a normal message?

    • @jonbeckett

      XTK is Executive Takeoff - it just means full details of the departure airfield are missing from the FMC
      VTK is Vertical Temperature Profile - which means the weather data is missing from the FMC

    Hi Jonathan,
    Thank you for the video. I need some help: ever since AAU2, I planned to fly this aircraft today, but the throttle won't work!
    So, I spawned the aircraft on the runway, engines, and everything running in order. Take-off-ready. But when I pressed A on the Xbox controller (connected to PC, Steam edition), the throttle won't budge. Then, I selected the throttle manually and tried pushing it forward, but it still didn't work. I tried for a good twenty minutes before aborting the flight. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

      That sounds like a WASM problem. You have to do a fresh launch of the sim every time for the WASM add on to launch, if you use quick resume it won’t stay active in the background.

      I have msfs 2020 for pc, not on steam though, and I also experienced problems at first since AAU2. I couldn't get the IRS to align. Turns out it was caused by some incompatible mods in my community folder. After I deleted them, everything worked. So check that you have no mods that are interfering with the new changes. Try starting the sim up with an empty community folder and go from there. Hope that helps.

    Jonathan, do you know why the AP system is architected into two distinct parts, FD and AP ? So you can easily disconnect the two to fly manually? Redundancy?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      No idea - it's probably just an enginnering thing - one system thinks - the other system acts.

    • @gabor-toth
      @gabor-toth ปีที่แล้ว

      You can fly manually by following the Flight Director yourself, in IMC for example. If the autopilot and FD were built into one then you wouldn't be able to do that.

    • @loiphin
      @loiphin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabor-toth Yes of course. But I want to understand the underlying architecture of the system and why it was done like that.

    • @Gilles45
      @Gilles45 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is absolutely no reason to ever turn off the flight director. You can fly an airliner manually on an IFR flight plan, but you need to have your eyes glued to the flight director in order to keep the plane on the flight path. Watch cockpit videos of real airline pilots flying an ILS manually, their eyes are glued to the PFD until the very last minute when they transition to the runway. The flight director is not part of the autopilot system.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      As somebody else commented - the most obvious reason is the pilot can follow the flight director's instructions manually instead of having the autopilot do it (for whatever reason - there may be many).

    All three autopilots come on because you've armed approach mode. The aircraft is setting up to do an autoland, and all three auto pilots will be powered. All electrical busses will isolate and number 4 will power the Main. Turn off the auto pilot on the ground after autoland or she's not gonna go anywhere.
    With the APU, just press the number one switch on the left side. If you turn on the other one, the cargo loading will stop working To divert power to aircraft operations as opposed to cargo operations.
    You might be having trouble on the approach and getting slowed down as the aircraft is about 60,000 lbs above the max landing weight...688,000lbs for the -800, 652,000lbs for the -400. At the weoght and speed you were landing, you'd burn the brakes pretty well.
    All sorts of little nitpicky items that we could talk about, but for someone who doesn't fly the 747, you did plenty good work.
