It’s not just the gender thing. It’s with anyone having any mental health issue , one thing most likely leads to another issue . ADHD leads to anxiety and depression or even anger problems. Anger issues leads to depression as well . Bipolar leads to depression & anger issues .

The more I read and watch things about ADHD, the more I think I need to see someone about it. Not only do I relate to everything but it explains so much about my life and where it went wrong. I always thought it was 100% my fault, being lazy, irresponsible, bad at time management, easily distracted, difficulty remembering to do things, etc. I'm not saying I have no responsibility but I've never had the tools to help me with my issues. Plus it doesn't help with my depression, anxiety and self-esteem issues to have this negative talk in my mind that I'm a horrible person for not being able to start or complete things.

I know, I have half of these symptoms. I’m not sure if you can have ADHD, but be good at class? I’m really forgetful(tend to forget instructions, in school I focus on the teacher and plan my lesson as she talks, but I struggle remembering times tables and other common knowledge such as that.) and I have been realising that I can’t remember stuff that just happened from a young age. I also can take say something my friend said I can tend to think about it too much, so then I pick out maybe a slight word that might mean I offended them, can any of you advice anything?
I just read through the comments on this and real sided that most people aren’t diagnosed until there late thirties, I’m 12 and want to think about the possibility of this a but more

I could remember several years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD. Also suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. 100% agree I used to have Psychosis and paranoid thoughts like "people thinking about me talking about me etc. Very odd behavior after getting off Adderall from 7-16. Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Wont ever need to do it again because I'm happy and contempt forever, but I wish more people did this to alter their perception of reality. Would help with healing much trauma

Abbygail Ross I’m a teacher and I’m very sorry that happened to you! My son has ADD and although we’ve had some issues at school, drawing was helpful and he was totally allowed to do it. I work with kids with ADD/ADHD/ODD a lot (I’m in Special Education)-good teachers don’t treat their identified (or anybody, really) like that. There are systems they can have in place-eg 5 minute break cards-to let you have a “pass”. Anyway, I hope it gets better: my husband also has ADHD and he is a fabulous, specialist math teacher now (despite almost failing it in high school)!

I think the problem with "girls are more mature" is also because people don't _let_ girls get away with immaturity nearly as much as they let boys do so. Boys are _expected_ to be disruptive and immature, with the excuse "boys will be boys," but girls are not "expected" to behave that way and are disciplined and expected to curb such behavior much sooner and more often than their male counterparts are. That has a lot to do with the internalizing emotional problems girls most often face with mental health.

I had a doctor tell my mom I had ADHD when I was around 11 and she dismissed it because I don't "act like it", when in reality I just don't act like boys. My symptoms are like the ones you described for girls and it's crazy because instead of her letting me get that help, she gets mad at me for doing things that its hard to control.
(Edit: Wow I didn't know this many people were able to relate and its kinda sad actually. I'm 16 now and hopefully at my next doctor visit my mom doesn't go because I'm going to try to tell my doctor so I can be tested. Hopefully everyone can get the help needed also, best of luck :)

I know it's generalizations but I'm AMAB, and a lot of my symptoms were more in the "girl" generalizations, which I find really interesting and why it (probably) took awhile to get diagnosed I think, because I was always seen as a boy instead of just a patient. "They just need to try harder" that could not be more accurate... I get decent grades and I have ADHD. I get extra time to finish my exam because of my ADHD. People at school give me shit for having those extra minutes to finish my exam. They said that I have good grades, and that means I got no problem in studying/ at school. They couldn't have been more wrong. I used to just brush it off and laugh, but I just CANT anymore . They don't know how much time it takes me to understand a passage. They don't know how much time it takes me to recite a passage. They don't know how much time I used to study a subject. And they will never know that. But I can assure you, I need to work three times harder than my classmates to get the same FUCKUNG grade . I am not trying to make people to pity me, I just want them to understand. I have decent grades is because I study. Good grades dose not mean I don't struggle.

I don't have ADHD, but I get extra time on tests too. I just process slower than most kids, so eventhough I understand the concept, I can't get the work out on paper fast enough. I totally understand how you feel though. Just because I get good grades, it doesn't mean it's easy for me. Thankfully the kids at my school don't bother me about the extra time, but one tip I have is to maybe talk to your teachers and explain what is going on. They might be able to come up with a special system or trick that will help you taking extra time on tests look less obvious. One thing that I did was that if it was allowed, I would come back in at break or at lunch and finish the test there, instead of in the middle of class. Hope this helps. :)

This describes me almost exactly from childhood to now, at 71 years of age. Great student in elementary school, good student after that but extremely distracted, often called a daydreamer by teachers. I can be listening to someone and completely miss what they’re saying unless I make a concerted effort to focus. I overcompensated to succeed when I put my mind to it but fell far short of what I could have done had I been diagnosed and treated. So many regrets and mistakes in my life. I’ve suffered from depression throughout my life. Ironically, I am a retired teacher with a master’s in emotional impairment and have worked with many children with ADHD. I started recognizing it in myself then but never pursued any help for it. I wish I had. Maybe I wouldn’t be living in such mental anguish now.

being academically gifted with adhd is a problem too because they will think there isnt a problem because youre doing well. Unfortunately this causes the development of bad habits that WILL cause problems when entering college and the real world. It was my problem when entering college but I'm tankful for my mom being such a huuuuuuge help in my life with studying and trying to keep me on the right track. Apparently my college did have a 504 plan to assist those with adhd and learning disabilities but because i did do well in highschool it wasnt... necessary by their standards and so... I struggle a lot and the school could care less, but I will make it anyway.

This is me. Now than I have more independent studying instead of lectures, I've struggled so hard to study. Yet no-one would believe I have any problems, because of I've always done better than most of children in school. But the truth is, I've had to be 10 times more determined, because of (since grade school) it took hours for me to finish my home works. I also always felt that I had responsibility to succeed, as I spend so much time in everything I do - like the results ought to be seen or I'm just extremely stupid :( Also, I often felt very lazy and bad person, because of I knew I could do my homeworks in no time, I knew how to do it but I just couldn't do the effort. TH-cam is my worst enemy, as I have to do my works with computer and need internet.
Keep it up, you're so strong!

I actually have this problem too - I was just recently diagnosed with ADD, and no one (especially my teachers) believed that I had a problem. My parents had noticed that I struggled with focus among other things, but they didn't actually act upon it until I opened up about it to a doctor. I'm a straight-A student in honors and AP classes, so it's not typically something that people recognize. Either way, my parents have been super supportive, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, that I understand how you feel. My biggest distractions include TH-cam, the Internet, phones, and just technology in general. I usually spend hours upon hours working on homework, trying to make it perfect, which results in sleep deprivation...but honestly, after all of these years thinking that I'm just an idiot, I've finally figured things out (sort of). I hope that all of you who are struggling will get help - it's not as bad as you think it is. :)

Lauren Stern I'm glad you opened up about it and did something to help yourself. The thing with ADHD is that it doesn't matter how smart you are if you have it. The problem with being smart enough to pass with flying colors despite it is usually it'll cause heavy stress as you rush to finish every last assignment ever! I've finished homework assignments just minutes before handing it to the teacher as class was starting and more recently submitted college essays minutes before it hit midnight before it was due and pulled all nighters to finish assignments. One morning after an all nighter I'm driving to school with a double shot espresso cappuccino and the AC on full blast to keep alert. I'm pretty sure I got a fairly good grade on that thing too. I try to minimize these destructive antics but I'm typing this as 1am and I have an 8am class in the morning. Still working on it I guess.
I suggest trying an app called Habitica if you like videogames. It turns your tasks, dailies and habits into a sortof game or rpg style reward system. you get experience and points for completing things and lose health for missed dailies and going back on habits you want to build. Good luck and keep improving.

My mom (who’s a nurse) and the family doctor said that my younger sister probably has ADHD. In order to officially diagnose her my sister’s teacher had to fill out a questionnaire saying how often she saw ADHD symptoms (such as spacing out, not finishing work quickly, getting out her seat, etc). The teacher claimed on the questionnaire she saw absolutely none of those symptoms even though she mentioned my sister doing those things to my parents during parent-teacher conferences in the past. Since the teacher said on the questionnaire she saw none of the ADHD symptoms, my sister couldn’t be diagnosed with ADHD.
This is frustrating since she were officially diagnosed with ADHD, the school would let her have extra time on timed exams and make other accommodations for her due to her ADHD. The family doctor could only give us advice on how to help my sister with her ADHD and that was it

"The well-behaved, bright students that just need to try harder." Couldn't be more accurate. I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 18 after five previous years of psychiatric treatment for anxiety and seasonal affective disorder so it went under the radar for a while. Always gifted (in fact I routinely qualified for the advanced classes in grade school but I refused to take them when I had the choice), always teacher's pet, but my actual performance fluctuated wildly from perfect As to failing. And up until I flunked out of college, it was like that, always knowing I had the potential to succeed but never actually achieving.

I’m female to male transgender and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 10, which was 3 years before I came out as trans.
While I was still identifying as female when I was diagnosed, I do think the fact that my ADHD got noticed may have been at least influenced by the fact that my symptoms are largely male presenting, though I do have some more stereotypically female symptoms as well. The symptoms I mainly struggle with are attention regulation, organization, and hyperactivity, my behavior and emotional regulation have always been pretty good I think.

The girl looking out the window was actually the first one I noticed, because that was me in school. I did ok in school for the most part but in 5th grade I started having more issues with "spacing out". I got the report cards about "daydreaming" and not focusing. It became a big issue, they got my parents involved and the teacher changed my seat so my back was to the windows...I eventually managed to find ways to force myself to focus or appear to be but it was out of a sense of fear of getting caught than because I had found ways to cope. Nothing was ever looked into, they just thought I was daydreaming/had an overactive imagination. I always joked about having ADHD, not that it's funny but because I think a part of me knew but was avoiding the truth. I'm in my early 30s now and finally coming to the realization that I need to get officially diagnosed and see what can be done to get my life in order. You're videos are a great start and very helpful! Thank you.

The stereotypes of ADHD (being a mostly male disorder that makes them hyperactive/rude/impulsive/troublemakers) are a disservice to everyone. I can totally understand why it’s so difficult for women to get diagnosed, because for me - even as a man - the more inward-facing nature of ADHD-I made it much less noticeable. Gather your facts and hold them out like a shield in front of you for protection. Maybe don't even claim ADHD. I told my mom I'm not sure I have ADHD, but I definitely have executive disfunction which can come with depression and anxiety too. The most important thing isn't getting the diagnosis, even though that may get you more resources and accommodations. It's the action of learning as much as you can and applying it to help you in life. Nobody has to give you permission to use ADHD tips in your life. No one can say you don't have a doctors note so you can't participate in what this channel has to teach.
