I find it absolutely crazy that certain places don’t have AC around the world (other than like freezing cold places that obviously don’t need AC). I live in Arkansas and we use the AC for the majority of the year every year. I would say we usually use it like at least 8 or 9 months of the year. I keep mine running almost 24/7. Without it we would all be constantly dripping sweat just sitting on the couch. What a world we live in.

    • @gajbooks
      @gajbooks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Live in Missouri, my parents have no AC, and except a few weeks in the summer it isn't too bad. Some summers are too hot, but this one has been fine. Even though Missouri isn't much more northern, it seems like northerly countries can deal with less. Wouldn't dream of going without a furnace though, even though it would be possible. It very rarely gets colder than 10 f, which if you're inside out of the wind with a blanket *probably* won't kill you.

A word in Norwegian i've yet to figure out in English is "Kos"
This can mean multiple things depending on the situation. It can mean cuddly, but both in a romantic and purely platonic way too.
When you're sat by the campfire, you can say exactly that. The phrase "Nå koser vi oss" can be translated to "Now we're having a good time", but again, it's not what it exactly means.

flax hit the nail on the head with his reasoning for japanese politeness and polite language... it is the exact reason.. japanese culture is based upon not causing trouble for anyone else... it can be very nice or very cold depending on your situation and circle.. but yeah the reason is the population is so dense and we interact with so many people so much throughout the day that we try to be as unobtrusive as possible.. another good example is where I live in Osaka if you ask someone a question you are probably gonna head "wakarahen kedo..." I don't know but... followed by the answer because they actually do know but trying to be polite :') also about TV those extreme shows are really old and don't really exist much anymore.. most of TV is the same monotonous crap where someone tries something new and regardless of what it is or what they thing they just say the same redundant comments because you have to be polite.. literally coma inducing

Confucianism even though is Chinese is also deeply ingrained in Japanese culture for centuries. Family and society is very important to confucianism. We respect our elders and we also have a culture where we pay homage and pray to our ancestors for protection.
As a Brit we use the word "cheeky" but my Chinese family find it hard to grasp as it's not so direct of a meaning lol

They were talking about how songs that aren't sad can be sad because of the story behind them. Pyrion made fun of Lewis by saying that his daughter listened to an Undertale playlist. She does so for that reason! The heartwarming ones and the tragic ones are fucking emotional when you know the story behind them.

The Japanese comedy game shows have the small window of people watching the show, is similar to canned laughter, to help/guide the audience, like cue's on when there was a joke.
I know it Thailand they will use lots of sound effects in post and canned laughter, and camer zooms of replays on watching reactions of the public, or in the stage mostly, other contestants to a specific moment, like when a singer start to sing beautifully, when they were expecting a swinging cat, that no longer has a tail... whoops... 😁

On the discssion why Japan is so traditional, respectful of elderly and overall polite:
I have no special knowledge of Japan but it sounds very logical regarding their history. There are various sociologists that describe the change of human behaviour over time and connect it to the monopoly of violence in a society. Just looking at Europe for a moment, people in the 17th, 18th or 19th century talk much like we do today. We can read their letters and books and understand them just fine*. But, we will feel odd about their behaviour towards other people: way more polite and respectful to rank and hierarchy. Why are we less like that? It isnt that current generations "suck more" or have some inherent problem. That, by the by, is the type of thing old men have said for millenia - literally. We have texts of ancient Greece where authors complain about the young generations.
So, why did it change for us in Europe? Well, it has to do with the monopoly of violence. Back in the day, a word interpreted as out of line or insulting could easily have bad consequences for you. In non-democratic societies, people in power could punish you for it. In times when violence towards children and the younger as a normal means to discipline was accepted, they would obviously be careful of what they said publicly. Corporal punishment was removed from the arsenal of schools only a century ago, less than a generation ago for parents. More generally, even among equals, violence could often be expected to be a result of language.
In short, people could expect strong and often negative consequences to their behaviour, especially language. For society to still be able to function, there had to be filters, there had to be ways to prevent this kind of violence. One of the best ways for it was a strong code of traditional behaviour with very polite language and attitudes.
So, what changed? In our societies, the governments became increasingly able to monopolize violence. In Europe, we consider it normal for cops to be armed, the military can walk armed and in uniform in the streets in some countries (France) but not in others (Germany). But citizens? No, if they have a grievance, they shouldnt react with violence, no "eye-for-an-eye" old testament justice - they should and do refer to authorities. Whether that's desirable (Id argue it is) is a different topic.
Back to Japan: as I said, I dont especially know the country's culture. But, their history is really interesting. They didnt have this progressive change for over 5 centuries from a society where people get into duels to solve conflicts to Karens calling the cops. They had a society that mostly functioned on medieval principles til the middle of the 19th century. Then, they suddenly opened up the country and adopted western technology, economy and some of its culture too. As a result, to me, it seems very normal that the attitudes inherent to former societal norms persisted for this long. I dont know if it's changing or has changed much in those regards, but right now, it's been just over 1.5 centuries. I wouldnt expect Japan to change the same way Europe did obviously, and this is just an attempt to link a change we observed in one place and understand another with it, while accepting it's neither perfect nor precise. But maybe it explains parts of why they're still so respectful and polite compared to most westerners. By the by, noticed how many rural americans have this reputation of also being quite polite? And how in the US, one can expect violence from a stranger much more than in Europe? Strange, that... :P
Oh, and to end: in case anyone's interested, the upper part is paraphrasing from memory (and Ive read the stuff some years ago) from Norbert Elias, a sociologist.
*I actually began reading a book from 1776 the other day, randomly picked it up on Audible and only realized it was that old half a chapter in.

One song that always makes me tear up is "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics. Can't get through it without crying. It hits too close to home, losing family members, and cherishing those around you.

Tenacious D dont take themselves too seriously but it seems a little reductive to relegate them to Just a comedy band. Jack Black's knowledge of rock is probably only surpassed by his love for it and every song is like his own weird, goofy love letter to it.

I had an interesting experience with a certain American-specific word some Japanese people used. I saw it used in an online video game and they were giving a hint for what type of head-wear a player was going to have to use in an upcoming event for players. They gave the hint "Wild". Everyone thought it meant like some kind of animal hat or jungle-wear, but I looked up at the hint they gave Japanese players. It was STILL "Wild". I thought to myself "Why are they using an English word for something they already have a Japanese version of...?" and after a bit I thought "What could wild mean that could only make sense if you said it in English..."
A light bulb lit up above my head and I shouted "WILD WEST" So I immediately went to the markets in the game and bought up every cowboy hat and all the materials used to craft one. The event came out, I was right, players needed cowboy hats and I was now the only one who owned them. I'M RICH!
