Whilst the sound quality is a bit ropey (understandably), this is one of the best videos of Jeff Mills on the internet. Recorded around the mid-nineties, most likely a few months after "Live At The Liquid Room", it showcases exactly why Mills was simply unstoppable, and untouchable during that period, and why pretty much every Techno DJ since has tried to emulate him. Nobody came close. Mills was, and still is, the Guvnor.

Then when I saw Mark Farina at 1015, and he brought a record case but didn't bother to play any in a 3 hour set, I knew it was over. I love that there are techno djs keeping the art alive though in 2024.
I was actually watching this when this was aired on TV in Japan. Surprisingly this was sponsored by Sony at that time - they were doing a project called "Sony Techno" at that time, back in 1995 or 96 (not sure though), releasing many old Techno 12 inch records and some mix CDs. I recorded this on video and kept watching this before and after school. Very amazed I found this on TH-cam. Thanks Kramer McBarret for sharing this!

I would pay to watch a movie about how Jeff Mills became The WIZARD. I mean he wasn't just born scratching on beat and mixing 4 turntables I would love to see the come up.
Jeff Mills used to play on a radio station in Detroit. His usual set was 1 hour, but the producers decided to cut his set to 45 minutes. He refused to play any less records in his time slot, and so started to mix quicker playing the best sections of some songs. This led him to become faster and faster, making him the legend he went on to be. And still is in my opinion. The club Lost in London run by Steve Bicknall was my favourite haunt, and Jeff was there a lot. Never heard a better live DJ than that man. Awesome.

This set is a classic i enjoyed so much by the cassette back in the days. I even went to Liquid Room in Tokyo once because of it, only to find a Japanese Indie concert. Night ended well though...
Yeah, these tracks aren't on the Liquid Room CD. I've listened to it enough times to recognize it playing in the house across the street. There are some edits in that disc, as it's split into three sections and fades out and back in between the three without the same track playing, so it's possible that this could've been from a portion that didn't make the disc, but they're definitely not on it.
There's at least 6 tracks on here that are on the Liquid Rooms mix CD that you're talking about. I too have played it to death. Casa; i9; Flowerchild; Extremist (ret ro mix); Axis 9 Confidentials 1-4 and Changes of Life are all on this and on the Liquid Rooms CD.
I think he cut his finger around 3.10 ?? 😅 After looking through his records, you can see him put his finger to his mouth. That always happens to me too (that’s where the comparison ends tho)
This is what separates these guys from the posers..they used the technology to enhance their sound..posers just use it to mach a simple beat...levels ❤

Mills makes heavy use of Purpose Maker and post-Purpose Maker hard loops, and Sony's involvement was one step behind the emergence of the small but hardcore techno scene in Japan, so I doubt it's 1995. I'm pretty sure I would have been there for this, or would have seen Mills on the same tour, either at Fumiya Tanaka's event at Rockets in Osaka or at Club Mushroom in Kyoto. I see the emergence of hard loops and Basic Channel style dub techno as the beginning of the end for the golden age of techno, but man, were they enticing at the time.
