Sir, though we have conveniently taken the raindrop as a sphere, they are not perfectly spherical in real life so we might or may have total internal reflection since the angles inside the drop need not be equal

Well im in 10h and was curious so came around here heard cbse gave a question regarding internal reflection and students assumed the answer mus be tir.
No actually he meant to say that the incident ray itself does not fall beyond the critical angle. If it did, then there would not have been any refraction. And since r is equal, the base angles of that triangle are also equal so the second refracted ray does not go beyond the critical angle by the laws of geometry and hence no TIR happens.
@@black_crest sir, but many other books say that a rain drop is act alike Prism....so, by it is not of circular shape and two sides aren't equal.....so, it can be said n that TIR happens !! ???
@@priyanshukumarsingh8638 Actually the rain drops are suspended in the air and are not under the force of gravity when a rainbow is formed. So it is assumed that the rain drops are spherical in shape Even if they were in shape of a prism, there is no saying that it is a PERFECT prism
Respected sir, If we consider a stationary spherical water droplet air then your great explanation definitely holds true and I totally agree with you. But as we know that these tiny droplet move in the air but the rainbow seems to be stationary. Why? Is it because the droplets are constantly being replaced by other droplets? Also don't the droplets constantly keep changing their shape due to surface tension and the continuous changes in the atmosphere? Then shouldn't the rainbow be spread all over the place rather than having the shape it has? Thanking you A Science student
Rainbow always faces the opposite to the sun, while you stand on a straight path between the sun and rainbows. Here in Ireland, we get plenty of rain and thereafter lots of rainbows, depending on the strength of sunlight. We get not only single rainbows, also double rainbows, only sometimes. Triple rainbows are rare.
Since the rain drops are very tiny, they should not change their spherical shape....I have seen that big liquid drop fragments into smaller one...but not small liquid drop
Dear sir, further increasing in Angle of Incidence (i) in water droplet (let us say i1), causes also the increase in the Angle of Refraction (r1) until r1 reaches 90°. At that point i1 is equal to Critical Angle(i1=ic). Beyond that limit when we increase the i1 further, refraction gets stopped(Because in denser medium refracted ray can't bend away from normal!) So it is bouncing back. Hence only TIR occurs! What you said is when i1 value is less than ic! Just draw and check while you increase i1 beyond ic. 🙂 pardon me if I'm wrong.. Thank you..

Waiting for your reply sir 🙏
Sir had just given the example of rain drop by taking its shape as circular but in reality there is no such fixed shape of a rain drop but the concept that has been explained by sir is absolutely correct as because if the medium is even little bit transparent (translucent) then some amount of incident ray refracts and some gets reflected back. If any one of these conditions are blocked then it breaks the laws of physics.
I think that is the reason why secondary rainbow is fainter than primary rainbow.......at every inside reflection there is some transmission ie refraction and hence loss of "light content" . For the angle of incidence r at the boundary of droplets angle of refraction will be i as the light has entered with angle of incidence i. So no TIR takes place.

Hello sir , myself Omkar ,I'm now studying in 10th.
I have the question about how to denote the refractive index .
In different textbooks there are different suggestions .
# In SSC textbook that is given like these:
*The refractive index of medium 2 with respect to the medium 1.
The given ratio for it is : 2n1= V1/V2
# In CBSE textbook that is given like these:
* The refractive index of medium 2 with respect to the medium 1.
The given ratio for it is : 1n2=V1/V2.
Here , 2n1 and 1n2 ....
Please give me your suggestion .
Refractive index is denoted by n or mew(the symbol for micrometre)
Let's use n for now
First of all we have to agree
If refractive index of medium is more, in comparison to other medium, it means that light will travel slower in that
So
n 1(proportionality symbol) 1/V1
n1 - refractive index of medium 1
V1 - speed of light in medium 1
Now there is a medium 2
n2 - refractive index of medium 2
V2 -speed of light in medium 2
Refractive index of medium 1 with respect to medium 2 is written as
2n1
n1 - right side for the medium you are comparing
Left side number, for medium you are comparing with
Now speed of light thing
2n1 = V2/V1
That's it
Hope it helps
@@cynide5911 please check your ans
N is refractive index
2n1 means
Refractive index of 1st medium with respect to second medium
2n1 = n1/n2
V1 is velocity of light in first medium
V2 is velocity of light in second
medium
n1 = 1/V1
n2 = 1/V2
Because more the speed of light, less is the refractive index
n1/n2 = 1 /V1 divided by 1/V2
So
It finally becomes
V2 /V1
Both the notations are correct . You can use any of these , believe me
