  • The Observer Research Foundation, in partnership with ORF America, Ministry of External Affairs, India, and the Embassy of India in Berlin, was delighted to host a ministerial lunch discussion at the Munich Security Conference 2024.
    Vishwa Mitra: Bridging Divides
The rise of the countries of the global south have had profound impact on political arrangements of the past. Strategic approaches are being rewritten as countries, large and small, take into account a world in which new centres of power are a reality. The Great Game is no longer the preserve of a few. This panel will discuss the alignments, realignments, and mis-alignments that define global cooperation and national security in this new multipolar age.
    Speakers:
H.H. Prince Faisal bin Farhad Al Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saudi Arabia
H.E. Mr. Stephen Harper, Former Prime Minister, Canada
H.E. Ms. Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age
Dr. Meghan O’Sullivan, Director, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School, United States
H.E. Dr. S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister, India
    Moderator: Samir Saran, President, ORF
Opening Remarks: Amb. Parvathaneni Harish, Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Germany

He was superb the way he shut down the all talks and no work climate propaganda of west was as impressive as jaishankar sir .
The west using climate change as a tool to prevent developing nations grow.
They want to apply the same rules they have in their own developed countries where per capita emissions is several times higher and the per capita income is several times higher.
You rich people can afford solar panel electric cars and all eco friendly alternatives but yet we don't see any changes in emission level from West .
The poor nation can't afford all these technologies and need aid to adopt them . West don't want to provide financial aid to them as stated here and they are also not happy with developing nations helping Africa either.
The so called middle powers are actually doing the heavy lifting. They are developing fast , they are trying their best to keep the emission as low as they can by investing in technology as they grow and at the same time are able to help their brother countries to adopt the eco friendly technologies who are in need .
They are also ready to help each other even in times like COVID when west completely ignored others .
Stop using the term middle power they are the real Power when it comes to humanity.
West has started listening to India and middle East because this century is going to be ours , next century will be of Africans. We are going towards a world where everyone is developed and lives a better life . In that world you don't want one country having all the power because no one will accept that .

To the panellists (basically from the first world) who disagreed with Minister Jaishankar on his point about smaller groupings, there was a global framework - the U.N. but it is dead. They had other smaller groupings themselves, the NATO, G7 etc. that was always self-serving for the same actors. But they object that if others do it, it will lead to more chaos. How can the fifth largest economy, the largest democracy and the most populous country not have a permanent seat? How can two continents not have a permanent seat? Unless there is a reform, which they are loathe to, this is the new reality.

A unipolar world with US as the big Dog helps West to remain/retain/think superior. A multipolar world is chaotic and especially, as per the West bad for Africa. So moral of the story we should have a multipolar world, because it will really help everybody and WILL really help Africa. I mean no offence, but I feel Japan does not really add any value to UNSC given that is already an ally of US, and doesn't have a history of raising an independent voice on global stage. It always just silently goes with whatever US says and decides.
UNSC should have members who can voice opinions and act independently.

You are forgetting Africa, we should have some major countries from that region join in as well, if we are serious about being equal.
Every geographical region needs a representative in-fact, if you wish for true global reflection and connectivity.
And yes to Brazil, but not just Brazil. But also other South American countries.

49:53 Samir nailed it. The west doesn't want to lose that superiority complex it seems. Them preferring a unipolar dictatorial superpower while being democracies is kinda crazy.

Global south has the resources and market , global north colonisation , exploitation and exclusion.
Non-west groups doesn’t mean anti-west. Countries have different sizes, economies, systems and geographical boundaries, one solution doesn’t fit all. A multipolar world in which cooperation with each other is the way forward I thinks.

Agree with comments below. BUT ALSO, I think we missed some more gems from Hon. Minister Dr. Jaishankar (roughly 36:00 to 38.30) when he wanted to respond to -
    1. PM Harper's point of relative stability in a period "from end of Napoleonic World to WW1; when great powers avoided conflict" & actually rebut/dismantle the argument
    2. How Colonialism somehow was a Bounty which Western Powers 'awarded themselves'
Time paucity didn't let him 😒

I always enjoy listening participating ORF guests. Topics and views shared by participants representatives makes interesting to listen how policies are and where there headwinds.
It also highlights arrogant attitude of certain countries where they admire new powers and criticise because they do not drive their agenda.
I think that mindset currently going through huge stress but as new powers like China, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea outshines more on global stage this views will get torque ful slap.
