  • This is the final video in my "How to Build a Pole Barn" series. In this video I have some closing thoughts on costs, materials, do-overs, wish I'd thought about that, and other advice.
Here's link to the materials list and the Sketchup model of the barn:
    www.redneckdiy....
At the bottom of that page there's a link that will take you to where you can download this information.
You can get a free version of Trimble Sketchup here:

What a FANTASTIC video series! Oh my GAWD you went above and beyond - better than a Home Depot book. We are looking for basic (BASIC) building information to start a homestead and your videos have been the best by far. Thank you so much for your time and dedication and patience in making these videos.
Just one question: What kind of nail gun was that? It looked awful heavy! Electric?

I don't see how anything could be any better. Awesome job from start to finish. It would probably take me longer on sketch up to draw the building than it did you to actually build it. First class all the way!

    Excellent series! Cudos!
A trick I use when installing solar panels on steep and slick
metal roofs that works very well is to shake up a hot clear soda can
and let it spray onto the roof. Once it drys ( very quickly in the summer)
you have extraordinary traction. The technique works great!
After the next rain the residue is gone so no clean up is required.
Use this method with clean rubber soiled shoes and your footing is secure.
Caution! This trick is not intended as a substitute for adequate safety
fall arresting gear. It is however a great addition and an added safety aid.

You can substitute gravel for your concrete on the posts. Norm Abrams says that gravel drains better than concrete. The slight give of the gravel makes it easier to plumb the posts. Put some gravel in, plumb it, more gravel, check plumb, etc..

As you described the cost in your last video being around 5k on your project what do you think you would ave payed for some company to come in and build it for you? As for myself I want to do it all by myself with minimum help to keep down the costs.

Wow watched whole series and it was awesome! I just finished a steel kit garage and I'm kicking myself for not building a pole barn I could have saved thousands. It's so much easier to work with would rather than steel tubing. If I ever build another building it will most definitely be a pole barn. You can't beat the price. I live in New England and one of the only reasons I didn't build a pole barn is because there are rocks everywhere! You can't get away from them it's very difficult to dig a anywhere. Awesome job on the series it was incredible to watch!!

Nice job on the building... I am going with a 26x32.... i can get a lot at menards for about 7500.00
Is lowes better? I can.save a little if I just buy the lumber seperate... Northland building wants 19,000.00 to build it. They have a 15.year guarantee.... the hardest part is to make sure your corners are square correct... I have 2 builders that live on each side of me and one is a framer so that is a plus...

Personal question - don't you have a wife? I help my husband on all of our projects, so I was just wondering as you were mentioning that you didn't have any help. "Small help is better than no help, Chewie" - Hans Solo
Also, I'm assuming you live down south. Why didn't you use pressure treated lumber, or at least use some kind of water seal? Just curious. My husband and I are building a woodshed and a carport. We aren't using pressure treated lumber, but I'm painting everything with Thompson's Water Seal. And I do mean everything.

Hey Feddie. My name is Mike and I've been watching your pole barn series throughout the winter. Great job on the pole barn. I like the way you framed it by notching the posts and using the bookshelf girt style. Getting ready to start my 32x 48 as soon as the weather cooperates. Im in upstate ny and the frost is still in the ground. You helped keep me motivated this winter watching you. Like the way you think , and how you take your time making things square, also like your idea of getting the posts on the same plane by adjusting the concrete. Im going to try to utilize that as I will be going at it mostly on my own. Thanks for the series, lots of good tips. Keep up the great work!

  • @PepperDarlington
    @PepperDarlington 3 ปีที่แล้ว

One of the things I've realized I need to do on our barn build is to not set goals because not a damn thing is gonna go right or go how you thought it was. Only thing I plan on now is the fact that I'm gonna work on the barn today. We're at the point where the trusses need to be built and set up on the girts but the heat plus the humidity today was too much for us to put more than 6hrs in before we called it quits. I'm happy that all the girts are in and might get to building trusses after work this week, might not. If it's done in time to get the pad poured before winter so I'm not laying in mud to work on the vehicles and equipment, well I'll be happy with just that. Don't set goals, just go at it when you can, be happy with what you got done and use those bragging rights when the neighbors come asking about who built that nice barn of yours.

Thanks for posting this! I'm thinking of building one for my small business as a workshop since I need the extra space. The drawings are incredibly detailed so thank you for putting in the extra time to do that! And I know how long some of those drawings could take. I've worked on AutoCad and RevitArchitecture projects for countless hours and hours and hours!

Awesome work. Just a note that it costs about 5x more 8 years down the line, so budget accordingly

Love the videos.. quick question though. The top of the bottom band would be your floor, correct? Do you notch the posts for this or does your sheeting sit on top of the banding.

Upgrade how to add sliding doors. Power and water. The storage building next to unit for safe storage of tools. How to sketch up concrete pour footings slab on grade. A sketch up drainage plan using large rock and soil cloth . did you have to pull a building permit and engineering? What was live and dead weight roof load? Did code require brackets on trusses. Would you recommend plywood versus sob for sheeting?

Great instruction, beginning to end. Thanks for all the extra work to put lists, models, pricing and gotcha's together. That is a huge benefit to those who are going to build their own. Big thumbs up from me!

It was a good informative series, the only thing I could add is that all engineered trusses come with cut sheets that tell you how to nail and brace the trusses to best and safest results. If you needed to have a building permit and inspection the inspector would check your work against these sheets and could fail you if not done according to the engineers notes
