    My mom is in her 80’s and still going strong. She may out-live me. But we don’t last forever, and I’ll be heartbroken when she’s gone. My condolences to you, Jim.
    Those tools and parts just may be priceless. Great find and perfect for your shop.

    Back in 1975 my older brother was made the manager of an old auto parts store in Peoria Illinois that was just taken over by a national chain. I worked part time helping catalog some of the stacks of old inventory going back to the 1920's. rebuilt carbs, water pumps, fuel pumps and so on. The place had been a Hudson dealer ship up until the 1940's also so there was a huge pile of old collision damaged body parts in the basement, mostly 20 & 30's stuff. The second floor had been the old body shop complete with a wood and steel car elevator but the second floor had literally tons of new/old parts and accessories on the floor and in racks. It was like opening a time capsule. At the time I was working on a 1934 Plymouth PE four door sedan and was able to source a fuel pump and starter for it there. once the word got out they had all kinds of collectors and restorers calling and showing up to look for stuff like fender skirts for a '61 Chevy, I know because they had a huge pile of skirts but more importantly there was a catalog with them. Fun times for sure!

    Heart felt condolences at your loss, there's always a thousand things to do that must be attended to. nice to see your grown tool collection A lot of antiques get lost in the shuffle of life and don't get preserved.

  • @tarstarkusz

    For a long time, tools were handed down from father to son. It really isn't until you get to the post war era where tools start to become quasi throw-away items. It would not surprise me in the least if a 19th century man had a workshop full of tools his grandfather owned and used.

    • @oldschool6345
      @oldschool6345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very true. Tools used to be valued in terms of what they made you capable of. In the 50's son's seldom thought about selling dads tools if they were passed down to him. Even if he doubted he would ever use some of them - he kept them because you just never know. Now it seems the family just wants to cash out, They see them as useless to them and take whatever they can get quick.

    Those wooden crates are great. I have a bunch of them nailed to the rafters around the perimeter of my basement. They make great shelves. They shipped everything in these crates. I have one that has peaches on it and the name of a fruit company. They were my fathers. He is the one who put the idea in my head of making them into ceiling shelves in the basement. Though the ones I have are much lighter than the one in the video that has been "hotrodded"

    Jim, This Mothers Day will be tough for you. Sorry for your loss. The relief instead of grief that I received when my Mom Passed was that she no longer was in constant pain. Carry forth her teachings and in that way you preserve her forever.
    Your antique find and show and tell is terrific. All of man's history shows through the tools and methods. My Uncle who ran a shop in the 40's and early 50's used grease on all parts of a car when he repainted them. Taping was yet to come along. Then he would come along after the paint dried and used old newspaper tho wipe off the painted grease. Just a different way back then that worked fairly well.
    Enjoyed your video. Rich

    May I add my condolences.
    And at 12:58, we used to call this tool an Oil Ring Expander when I was a mechanic back in the early '70s. We could use regular plier type expanders with the compression rings, but this tool would expand the thin side rings on the oil ring without them twisting and without scratching the pistons if you were to simply set the first end in the oil ring groove and spiral the rest of the side ring around the piston into place.
    Your shop makes me so nostalgic! Thanks for the memories.

    Usually spin off channels whether it be on TV or on TH-cam never live up to expectations. It is great to see that your channel is becoming a very top notch channel. Between Scott ,Dean , Frankers and you Jim on Coldwarmotors, this is another channel I can't wait to see when they come on. As a lifelong mechanic myself as my day job, I find your stories close to home most of the time. I have owned my own shop most of my life. And have older tools not used anymore but still respect the history.

We found all sorts of old tools he had forgot about over the years. I put most of them to use when needed. Thanks for the good memories of my mentor. This is cool stuff. There was a service station in my small SK town where they just "downed tools" sometime in the early sixties, but the building and several others around it remained in the possession of the same family. I was able to roam around in the shop once as a youngster of about 12 and look at stuff. I remember picking up and examining a valve spring compression tester. They had lots of cool tools and parts. The smell of old grease and oil and wooden workbenches remains in my memory. You guys might like the vintage vibe over at Dave Richards channel. He runs a 30's era steam powered machine shop. The crow's foot attachment for a ratchet is, I believe, used to tighten the rearmost head bolt on a Model T. Otherwise, with the firewall/body in place, it is very difficult to tighten that bolt. Getting that bolt tight on my 1926 was a bear with normal hand tools.
