    I'm a 3800 guy, on the second transmission and it's already giving me issues. That Getrag F23 is looking mighty tempting after watching Terrel Smith's Hellboi build series

    I had an 07 Cobalt LS sedan AT....for all of the basic bolt-ons and a tune (Trifecta), it handled it fine. I was going swap in the LSJ SC but never got around to it...wanted to try to get it in the 200-220 whp range...nothing special. The car had a LOT of suspension work and it was a killer in the corners because it was a base (light) with a lot of FE5 or aftermarket parts.
    I had a base dyno done and never got it back to see what it made with bolt-ons and tune. I don't remember the exact number, but I think it was either 112 or 118 whp... But I'm pretty sure it was more than 20% drivetrain loss. Still a fun little car. I know the bolt-ons and tune didn't add a ton, but it definitely felt a bit better...probably a little more than a stock manual had for power would be my guess.
    I can drive a stick, I'm just not really a fan...I suppose because I learned driving dock trucks and only owned one manual car (mid-90s Grand Am GT) and just got sick of driving it in traffic.
    Good info. Thanks for the video.

    AR5s are even mated to LSx engines, and other 4/6 Cylinder turbo engines. They're getting more and more common. They are also very similar to the AX15 from Jeep, and the R154 from Toyota!

    Great video! It's interesting that the F35 on the LNF is rated for 260lbs/TQ while GM offers(d) a stage 1 tune that would push Torque to roughly 340lbs with warranty. It would be neat to see a safe/reliable limit on each of the transmissions like you guys shared in your engine video.

    I have the F40 in my Regal GS, any ideas on how much that trans can take? It’s currently tuned by you guys, but I would like to get a little more out of the car without breaking the trans.

    • @gbrunner24
      @gbrunner24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We've never broken an F40 because of power, not to say they're invincible, but they can certainly take some torque.

    Have yet to break an AR5, several 400 ft lb pulls and lots of abuse. I wear out prop shaft CV joints, they get loose.

    Around the turn of the century there were a few guys running superchargers on LG8 & LA1v6s and the 4T45s held up OK from what I heard. Maybe there were more aftermarket upgrade parts available at that time? I remember specifically there was a Malibu on street slicks that smoked my buddies built 5.0 it was wild

    • @leesovern4678
      @leesovern4678 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There use to be aftermarket upgrades years ago for it however those are long gone. Still Galvan make a fast car with one as long as you run a trans temp Gauge and tranny cooler

  • @chadoliver2966
    @chadoliver2966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So is there anything outside of a aftermarket tranny cooler that someone can do to improve ir upgrade the 4t45e? I thought you guys offered upgraded internals for that transmission awhile back.?

    Was hoping you guys would mention how to know if a car has an LSD, and pro/cons of transmissions with or without an LSD. I know its RPO code G85, but what if a trans is not in the original car, etc?

    • @TriHardVII
      @TriHardVII 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      U can see the tag on the f35 trans while it's in the car, look under all the vacuum hoses near the cam caps. You'll see lsd in big letters on the tag

    • @jaypurce2812
      @jaypurce2812 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also just jack the front end up (w/ e-brake on & back wheels chocked) & spin a wheel by hand. If they both move you have a LSD. Or just hold launch control on a back road and roast your tire/tires

      Meh biggest issue with the 4t45 up to a point is heat. Went through 10 transmissions in 5 years drag racing it on e47 and fbo with slicks. Last two years been on the same junkyard trans just added a 40k cooler and thermostat and a trans temp gauge. Running 7.90s - 8.10s in the 1/8

    Don’t know if you’re talking about me or William Kotz as the auto kappa guy in Ohio racing it, but so far mine has been stout. 120k in, definitely needs a trans cooler if you wanna play around. You can definitely feel some power loss, but I don’t think it’s as bad as the 4t45. If BMW thought it was good enough for their early 3 series cars then it must be good enough to have fun in a roadster.

      F40 should be the strongest, M32 sort of ok, but it does seem the F23 is pretty robust.

    I've got a auto hhr SS and am tryin to get it on Dyno Friday, on the street I have not had a set of tires to even have the trans chatter, I haven't heard of many input shaft failures like the 4t65ehd. So far so good 166k miles and the last 10k was hard driven so have a lil more faith in your tunes and let the owners take care of the trans when it goes. A 4t65ehd was notoriously shit and u guys built a damn company off it lol. I didn't recall to many needs to swap a manual either and when it was done it made them worse cars to drive. I'll send Dyno stuff when it happens for sure.

    I asked Getrag how to say Getrag once, they say "Gee-Traig", where the Traig is like Craig.
    I seem to do this a lot, asked about Aisin, they say "Eye-Shin", where the shin is like your leg bone shin.
