I have had my r100gs for 22 years and it has done 430,000 km, lots of trips across Australia, it has not given me any issues at all.

My R1100GS was reliable but the parts didn't have a good longevity. For example, the gearbox went at 50,000 miles/80,000 km.

110000 miles on mine so far. Seems to be good at getting me home. Went 2-up to Japan and back on it. It will do I suppose.

With the prices that these fetch now I am kicking myself at passing so many up back in the day, I actually own a R1100GS of 99 vintage among other things and I will make a bold statement and say it is the best GS for proper touring off the beaten track. It is newer than the R100, Does not fetch the absurd prices and can be serviced and worked on easily by the owner unlike GS's that came after it, I also do a fair bit of off roading with it and whilst it is not a enduro bike it will get you through most things. The only thing I hated about the bike was the beak but I modded mine by cutting it and fitting a r1150gs Adventure extender. I am still shocked the prices on the R1100GS have not risen much they really are the best GS in many peoples eyes...

Second hand values show true pedigree. If you cant fix stuff then stay at home on a Honda. If you need to cruise at 85 then your missing the point of land travel on a motorcycle.

Just aquired mine last September. Loving it tho' haven't done any long trips. A bit special 1996. just over 10,000 miles 2 owners, GS PD CLASSIC. Probably paid twice as much as when new, but it's what I wanted after 9 new BM's over the last 26 years. Lock down over and I will be off to France.

GS means Gelände/Straße which translates to Terrain/Street so offroad and onroad

The GS designation referred to the Gelände Sport..
The G/S (erlier models) designation referred to the Gelände/Straße ;-)

Yeah that last statement was naive, they have an excellent record of reliability know to be a RTW bike.

I might be wrong but I think I bought a fireblade maintenance dvd where u fully serviced it. Surely a bmw shaft drive would be a piece of cake.

BMWs of this era are generally rock solid, I don't feel that it is fair to characterise them based on one bad example.

I never get the complaints about the bmw indicators switches. Harley has the same setup and you never hear complaints about them in reviews.
Also GS is Gelende Strasse. literally - off road street or IOW all roads.

lazy steering and having to muscle it around corners? wtf!? a airhead GS with the 21" front wheel is SO FLICKABLE. its hard to look at scenery on the side of the road without the bike drifting. it flips back n forth out of corners so well

I routinely spanked sport bikes in the twisties with mine. They couldn't believe I had just 60 HP.

Not hard to foresee the splines on the 100s being more robust than the
later versions - longevity = proper lube, at correct intervals --- A bit of a
ball ache to do - which is probably why some people don't bother /
don't want to pay a MASSIVE labour bill to have a franchise
    dealer's mechanic do it .....

Do these bikes cruise particularly well at all on modern motor ways or are they a bit buzzy at say 75mph 🤔 ???

Who else thinks BMW have lost their way with the newer GS?
Perhaps the last of the credibly capable - the 1150s
For me, the Adventures seem particularly ridiculous - so, so heavy - if you
get bogged down, or happen to come off with the bike winding up at
an awkward angle - potentially very, very difficult to extricate yourself ...
..... even if you do happen to be a #BeefCake (pack a hand powered winch!)
    And the electronics?
Fair enough, it might matter less for those that only ever intend to
use their GS as the 2-wheeled equivalent of a 'Chelsea Tractor', but then
that still makes a nonsense of the Marketing
