Zagnut is actually my favorite candy bar. Very elusive these days.
Zagnut are actually quite tasty, those and Zero bars were my favorites as a kid.
It's kind of like the inside of a butter finger and a chik-o-stik mixed together.

US chocolate apparently contains the same compounds you get in human vomit, so it smells a bit funny.
That's disgusting but believable. The only choclate that tastes and smells weird is Hershey's milk chocolate, its so weird. Their dark chocolate is fine though.

Butyric acid comes from the milk fats in the chocolate. In a process called lipolysis, the fatty acids in the milk decompose, resulting in a rancid, or "goaty" taste. Hershey's purposefully puts their chocolate through controlled lipolysis, giving it that "unique" flavor.

PopeKurt you're right about that! Chocolate, candy, cookies, etc all seem to be regionally specific. People just like what they grew up with. I know a lot of Europeans rave about milka chocolate, but I just think it taste like the cheap stuff that comes in advent calendars, which is gross. Hershey, on the other hand, is delicious 😀

Hershey wasn't always bad. They just use cheaper ingredients now because 1) to increase profit and 2) they have almost no competition after buying up all the other chocolate makers.

OK. Coming in really late here. Lots of people going on about Zagnut bars. Here's a short history. There was a candy company in Pittsburgh called the Clark Candy Company. Their two most popular confections were the Clark Bar and the Zagnut Bar. The Clark Bar was the (much tastier, IMHO) predecessor to the Butterfinger candy bar made by Nestlé. The Zagnut bar was simply a Clark bar that was coated in toasted coconut instead of chocolate. As Nestlé edged the Clark bar out of its market share with the Butterfinger, Clark Candy became vulnerable and eventually sold out to Hershey. While Clark bars are still available in limited markets such as vintage candy shops, it has never regained its place on a national level. Same thing with Zagnut, but I'm glad to see it getting some attention as it was my favorite candy bar when I was a child. Oh, yeah. I grew up in Pittsburgh. That's why I know so much about the Clark Candy Company. Nostalgia and all that what not.

I think one reason I enjoy watching these is that the number of times they reference dirty things and joke about it makes me feel better about myself, because they usually think of the same thing I do when I hear they say something a bit odd, or something has an funny name...

It's MILK chocolate. The term for the aftertaste is called "tasting the cow."
Tasting the sour cow maybe, European milk chocolate does not have that aftertaste, we use fresh milk.
aye we Americans use the oldest nastiest milk from cows with infected teets to give the milk even more flavor.
It has nothing to do with the milk. The cocoa is processed differently. American chocolate is more acidic, hence the vomit aftertaste if you're not used to it.
It's the milk, not the cocoa. Hershey's uses sour milk in their milk chocolate. It's still pasteurized of course, but they allow it to go sour on purpose to give it their distinctive taste. I can't stand it myself.

I have to agree, the Hershey's kisses do have a weird after taste, I always thought that as a kid. I grew up on Hershey's, but now that I'm older, the only way I really enjoy it is if it's right out of the fridge or freezer and is super snappy.

American chocolate flavor is different from Euro chocolate in the dairy content, which is sour. I prefer American milk chocolate, but it's a flavor preference built over a lifetime.

glad they don't hate Hershey's...I grew up around Hershey PA kinda so I was like always there...Chocolate World was a thing in my life and going to the amusement park.
The reason Hershey's has that weird after taste to it that reminds people of vomit is due to how it's made. The US uses a technique called lipolysis, a process that partially breaks down the fatty acids in milk and effectively sours the milk. In the early 20th century, the process of partially souring milk before using it in chocolate was used to make chocolate last longer in storage. (This was good for the war, for rationing, etc. In the UK, a lot of chocolate factories were near dairy farms, which meant the UK did not really use this technique.) The plus side of using lipolysis was that the breakdown of fat in the milk which makes milk go bad was slowed, but the bad side is that it produces butyric acid. Butyric acid is the fat component responsible for the smell of Parmesan cheese and baby vomit. That's why many people say Hershey's has a 'vomit after taste' or cheesy taste. Since most American's grew up with this taste, they don't notice it so much, but those who didn't? We notice it much more.

Ghirardelli is a good one to try. Sadly, it is no longer in the original owner's hands. Lindt bought them out. I think they are Swiss. The chocolate is the same good quality. Hershey's is kind of low end, but the most widely eaten here, closely matched by Mars and Nestle.
As an American who lives less than 20 miles from Hershey, PA...I've never seen any of these but the Hershey Kisses and have never had ANY OF THESE

I live near Hershey, PA and I've been to Hershey Park many times. I can tell you, if you want to get a good sense of Hershey candy, you need to try a bag of Miniatures - milk chocolate, dark chocolate, Mr. Goodbar, and Krakle. Those are the backbone of Hershey products.
I have yet to see anyone from a non-US country enjoy American Hershey products. It really makes me want to try non-US chocolate. It must be so much better!
