"Butoh resonates with the weakness of the body" wait, so I, a disabled person, can learn how to dance??? That's an amazing concept and it's giving me hope!

Yes! I'm a butoh dancer with some physical issues, and anyone can do butoh. It is a dance of the spirit, no steps, only flowing as your spirit wants to, even stillness, as the body allows. One of the founders of Butoh - Kazuo Ohno, at the end of his life when he was ill, danced with his eyes. Yes, you can dance butoh... go as you can, honoring the unique way your body can allow your soul to dance. ♡

@@RobynBellospirito Your response is beautiful. In my first three decades, I studied contemporary dance and now in my late 50s with some body/movement decline, I love that I can express through this medium. Thank You!

I had no idea that Butoh was born of surrealism, it makes so much more sense now. I think this form of dance is awesome.

Wow. I'm 55, but this is the first time I stumbled upon anything like this.
This is a style of dance I can really appreciate. I've been doing some "movement" on my own, in private (in hiding, really), for years and--come to find out--it's somewhat similar to this.
This is pretty exciting. Thanks for posting. I actually feel a little less crazy and alone now--if that makes sense.
I see there are a number of other videos out there for me to check out.

I think it's a natural thing for us to want to move our bodies in a way that releases tense energy throughout our body. This subconscious type of dance movement is also used in some models of dance therapy, or 'sensitive dance' wherein you embody the feeling and are really giving whatever it is you're trying to work out the attention that it needs.

What an incredible way to explain inner pain, mental, emotional, physical or psychic!
    I feel HEARD.
As if Greek theatre focused on movement!!!

I like how this reminds me of western concepts like modern, postmodern, and contemporary, but I can clearly see how this is a style of its own, and the fact of it being rooted in surrealism seems key to its distinction. There is something that seems much more direct about butoh in that sometimes that is just exactly what the subconscious really is - perceptible but not required to be comprehensible; it's really mesmerizing when observed as it is and as it plays/dances out in front of you

i used to do this kind abstract movement when i was in my 20s... no music, no dancing, just moving.. and iirc it was mostly my hands. it felt like meditation, it just felt good.

This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing your butoh with the world! It's a very important dance that many westerners do not understand. It is deep and meaningful. I do butoh too, and get into that place where time passes so quickly, or doesn't exist. When I found butoh years ago, I knew that butoh is my dance. Thank you for inspiring me to get back to it! Blessings!

I just heard about Butoh because of Joe Bob Briggs mentioning it in his Last Drive In broadcast.
    What a cool art form.
Isn't it interesting that the "formal" dance that most of us are taught is beautiful also produces a high degree of pain?
To be good at most formal dance, you have to go against what is natural for your body. It is cool to see that there is a form that each individual finds 'natural' to them.

Evelyn, yes, I understand! Butoh can stir us deeply. It is not entertainment like most western dances which are meant to be pleasing to the viewer. It is a deeply spiritual dance that must be witnessed without judgment, then felt. ♡
