How many people will give up their seat for a pregnant woman?

  • Only six in 10 commuters would give up their seat for an expectant mother, a study revealed.
Researchers found the battle for a seat amid the morning or afternoon rush-hour apparently leads to passengers neglecting their manners or failing to notice pregnant women.
The study of 2,000 regular users of public transport also found one in four commuters hadn’t given up their seat for a 'pregnant' woman in case she wasn't actually expecting a child.
The research was commissioned by Mama Mio skincare as part of their ‘I’m Expecting’ campaign which encourages expectant mums to not be afraid to ask someone to give up their seat.
Ambassador for the #ExpectingChange campaign, Anna Whitehouse (@Mother_Pukka) said: “Pregnancy is not a weakness, but it is a vulnerability and I felt this during my first trimester in particular.
“Busy, hot, and cramped commuting conditions can be incredibly stressful both physically and mentally, and being able to sit down can make a difference.
“However, from my own experience, I find that people are either too engrossed in their phones to be aware of their surroundings, or won’t offer their seat unless prompted.
“I’d encourage anyone who needs a seat on public transport to wear a badge and make eye contact. If that fails, don’t suffer in silence - ask for one!”
Natalie Cowley of Mama Mio said: “We were surprised at the findings, as we’d expected everyone would offer up their seat to a pregnant woman.
“We were particularly shocked that only two per cent said you should offer a seat to a woman in her first trimester, considering how many suffer from severe symptoms during this time, including sickness and fatigue.”
The study also found adults believe you don’t need to offer mother-to-be a seat until she is visibly showing, with three in 10 saying so.
Eighteen per cent agreed you should offer a seat during a woman’s third trimester, with 11 per cent saying you should during the second.
And just two per cent said you should offer up your seat when a woman is within her first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
One in 20 have even ‘stayed put’ over offering up their seat to an expectant mother because they had a reserved ticket.
Seven per cent of women admitted to being offered a seat after being mistaken for being pregnant and a shocking fifth of expectant mothers have been too embarrassed to ask for a seat themselves.
One in five are afraid of who they might offend by offering up a seat on public transport, so they simply don’t bother.
The study also revealed that among the list of 'commuter etiquette' are letting people off before you get on, turning down your music and moving down the bus or train when space is limited.
Not putting your feet on a seat, avoiding consuming smelly food and having your ticket ready to avoid queue pile ups also featured in the top 20.
But despite the unwritten rules, nearly one in five admitted they don’t always follow these outlines of common courtesy themselves.
And many are living under the notion that rules vary from bus to tube to train, with more Brits giving up their seat on a bus than on a tube or tram.
The hustle and bustle of modern life means two thirds agreed Brits are typically rude when it comes to travelling on public transport.
More than half said commuters are impatient and so their manners fall by the wayside, with an equal number agreeing Brits are too buried in their phones.
Fifty-six per cent reckoned it should be made clearer who is eligible for priority seating, with 52 per cent saying more posters at stations and stops would help.
Sixty-two per cent wanr more posters on trams, trains and buses themselves and 60 per cent would like to see more pictures on the seating on public transport.
Natalie Cowley, added: “The #ExpectingChange campaign aims to raise awareness on behalf of pregnant women, and inspire Brits to have more consideration for fell commuters.
''We also hope it will empower pregnant women to have the courage to ask for a seat when they need one.”
Anna Whitehouse also added: “My decision to partner with Mama Mio on #ExpectingChange was largely because it’s a brand that stands for something more, and I also used their skincare products religiously throughout my pregnancy.”

Also we have all made that shocking you're pregnant, no I'm not moment so I would not be able to tell the difference anyway but also offered to give up my seat for an old woman who luckily had been pushed further down the aisle as when she screamed how old did you think I f**king am. I thought it was a question so replied 60. She went crazy trying to fight through other passengers. Apparently 55 is not 60. Now I keep my head down and try not to engage with fellow passengers in case they are violent lunatics. When it was her stop the driver had to escort her off to ensure she did not start any more drama on her way off. Is this really anyway for old people to behave?

Being a decent adult and having compassion is a basic human core development. Unless there’s something wrong with your brain chemistry and you simply don't have it… giving up your seat that is designated for vulnerable people like pregnant people is a sign you’re a decent, well developed adult, you have understanding and are educated to understand that that seat was designed for people who are venerable. Life is stages at one point you , I, every person will be vulnerable whether that’s because you’re Ill or pregnant or old age or something else having humanity and compassion is just a basic human instinct. even children have it from such young ages. And if you don’t have that as an adult you really gotta think why and maybe refer yourself to a therapist.

    1. I didn't see women giving any seats which makes this video only about men. She should've asked women as well to give up their seats.
    2. It's a place where people mind their own business. They might look at the floor, use their phone or looking at walls. Her assumption that people are looking at her and not giving the seat is false depending on the situation.
    3. Citizens are not under any obligation to give up their seats. So if they don't give up their seats, do not cause issues for them.

Sometimes I don’t think the seats are highlighted enough to realise they are priority seats. When people are in their own bubble, on their phone etc. I think it just comes down to manners. Whether it’s a priority seat or not. However these days you can’t assume someone is pregnant either, so maybe it is better that the pregnant person asks to sit down. Personally I’d give up my seat for anyone who needs it. Even though I have a terrible back condition. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's not my fault that someone is pregnant. Not to be rude or anything but I don't think someone should be entitled just because they're pregnant. No one else asked to suffer along with your conqiences. If someone sat their first it's early bird catches the worm. Finders keepers losers weepers, lol. That's just my opinion. • @dinopoop9025

No offense, but why should I give up my seat because someone decided it was their choice to be pregnant. You shouldn't expect it just because you're disabled, or pregnant. You should expect that you can't always get what you want. Like, I said. If it's a medical emergency or something of course if you're just pregnant then no. It's normal. You don't know my medical issues either. They don't know if I can stand for 10 minutes. I have medical issues. So, I think it's selfish of them to expect it just because they're pregnant doesn't mean I am less of value. It's not my fault and people shouldn't have deal with their consequences. No offense, to people. (Also, I'm not offended or mad by your comment just to let you know. Lol.)

You just seem to not understand the fact pregnant woman are venerable. that's why they have seats designated for them... being a decent adult and having compassion is a basic human core development. Unless there’s something wrong with your brain and you’re a psychopath or narcissist or something… giving up your seat that is designated for vulnerable people like pregnant people is a sign you’re a decent, well developed adult, you have understanding and are educated to understand that that seat was designed for people who are venerable. Life is stages at one point you yourself, I, every person will be vulnerable whether that’s because you’re Ill or pregnant or old age or something else having humanity and compassion is just a basic human instinct. even children have it from such young ages. And if you don’t have that as an adult, you really gotta think why and maybe refer yourself to a therapist.

I believe in giving up my seat for anyone who needs it, bascially if im sitting down, and seeing someone who needs it more close by, ill just get up and walk away from the seat and let them hopefully sit down there, i dont need a thank you and ill just stand somewhere else. Just give your seat up to anyone, man woman child or dog if need be if they might need it and dont do it for any reasons other then good.
