Imagine that, treating your employees like people instead of cattle, and making a reasonable quantity of video games instead of money laundering schemes disguised as wannabe movies.
I've heard some factions in Nintendo have been treated poorly though before... and that's before the crunch in Gamefreak due Pokemon Company's business model on Pokemon-franchise as a whole.
@@KonaKonaKaabisteru That's the Pokemon Company mismanaging and not needing to try since they make more money than the actual face of Nintendo, the company that owns a third of the property.
Nintendo’s treatment of employees is not perfect- specifically in the way that they treat their workers that aren’t under the core development fold. There are instances of them refusing to give ‘secondary’ workers (such as product testers or international workers) full time positions, or laying them off. Also, they are involved with many partner studios that do not always treat employees great. But for the developers and workers that are under main Nintendo, by all accounts they are treated really well. Their employee retention rate is 98.8%, an insanely high number. The pay isn’t the very best in the industry, but it’s not bad and it’s very stable and pretty secure, and it’s been shown that top level executives will take steps to make sure that their compensation is still good even when the company or a specific product/game isn’t doing phenomenally. They also have really good benefits and, by most accounts, very good work life balance (contemporarily). In the past they struggled with crunch, but that’s something they’ve mostly moved past, they’ll just delay a game when they need to. Something in particular that I have to commend them for is them formally supporting same-sex partnership and giving employees in those relationships the same treatment, including benefits, even though gay marriage is currently illegal in Japan. Nintendo is still a corporation, and any complaints against them should be listened to and taken seriously. But when you compare the current state of Nintendo employees vs most other triple a companies, it’s pretty shocking.
Exactly, even if they start out slow, as long as they have the usual first party games (Mario, Zelda, Splatoon), they'll make money. Heck Tears of the Kingdom was the fastest selling Zelda game of all time. As of writing this, it has sold over 20 million physical copies, closing in on Breath of the Wild, which, as of March 2023 was at 29.8 million copies
nintendo has an absolutely killer strategy. make your consoles have old hardware so you can sell them for cheaper than the competition, then give your games cartoony graphics so people can't tell the hardware is inferior, and you can focus on gameplay instead of graphics making their games incredibly fun to play, and also much cheaper to make.
i don't even think it's a matter of "cheaper" or "inferior" in a vacuum. it's using tech for what translates to interesting gameplay because ultimately THAT'S what people buy games for. the most powerful console rarely wins a generation and that's not because people "can't tell." it's because MOST people genuinely couldn't care less.
Plus with that old hardware, it doesn’t make you REGRET underutilizing it’s power when playing lightweight games. Like, you don’t feel you wasted your money and time on a console that could output 4k UltraHD graphics every time you play a pixel-styled indie game.
I think this was something Gunpei Yokoi ingrained into the company culture with the original GameBoy. Wasn’t advanced, didn’t need to be, and gave us excellent games.
Putting consumers and developers first and treating them like people rather than sources of income makes a huge difference. Chasing profits for profits' sake may work short term, but is terrible long term. Unfortunately success seems to make these companies lose sight of what caused the success in the first place.
💯💯💯 absolutely. it’s wild to me that this is something people cheer on in the moment. like i get the idea of being a fan of the “winning team” but being a fan of a corporation winning at your expense is wild to me lol
People will bring 100 things wrong about Nintendo and their overpriced games or whatever But to me in my opinion the most important thing is how Nintendo treats their employees and game development in a sustainable way. Customers having to deal with expensive Nintendo games is one thing but employees at Sony Microsoft constantly losing their jobs is literally killing the industry. People who make games have their lives ruined and it’s a much worse issue than nitpicking Nintendo’s flaws which for the most part are harmless. I think becoming a game dev is a terrible idea in this current environment.
As a consumer, I admittedly am often annoyed at the high sales prices. Many of their games do not seem worth it to me. But, it’s actually a really important part of the company philosophy that I admire. They believe that all of their products are high quality, just by being a Nintendo product that their workers crafted. Whether it’s Zelda or One Two Switch, they value the contributions of all of their developers collectively. I think that this is good, because it takes a lot of pressure off of developers for the games to ‘do good’- even if the game fails, they’re still valued employees, which is something that can’t be said of other companies. It puts the focus on the craft of creating and not the success of it.
@@WatchReDirect it's a misguided complaint. The main criticism (at least in my opinion) is that they go on sale less often and for significantly less compared to most other companies. Their full prices tho are in line with the rest of the industry (even taking into account the restraints in what they can do with their hardware) and their way of making games profitable tends to not be way less predatory than other companies (mario kart tour is the exception, not the rule)
As someone who doesn’t own a PS5 and hasn’t played Astro Bot, the idea that it’s “Basically Super Mario Galaxy 3” is the best idea I’ve heard for a big budget game in a while.
The game is awesome. Low stakes gameplay that truly shows off duel sense controller 🎉 It's a bit sad, though. To see a hamoge to sonys past that they have yet to show any interest in bring back 😢
people are saying the industry is falling when we have nintendo and pcs that are thriving with amazing experiences. i got called autistic and shit for liking the switch when i started middle school back in like 2017 because i didn’t have 2k or a ps4 (i got one later, still no 2k) and it sucked man
It's probably telling that I personally haven't owned a non-Nintendo console since the PS2 (and do the rest of my gaming on PC)... but none the less I do think there are two areas where Nintendo really need to improve: 1) Online multiplayer The whole friend code mess is an incredible annoyance that shouldn't exist anymore, and people should have the built-in option to use voice chat. (Voice chat isn't for me, personally, but it's perfectly possible to satisfy both audiences who do and don't want to use it.) 2) Accounts and digital content availability The whole mess of having one-way transfers of digital content between the Wii and Wii U was so clumsy and unnecessary. The same for if you do a mid-generation upgrade/sidegrade and want to keep your stuff. All you should need is your account credentials, like on Steam, and purchases of emulated content (like the Virtual Console) should just transfer over perfectly with new emulation software and be available for purchase on the new platform just like it was on the old.
‘Nintendo are in the past’ is something only a ps or Xbox diehard would say. They don’t understand how Nintendo are light years ahead under the most important aspects for videogames companies.
I don't always agree with a lot of Nintendo's annoying business decisions, but i still respect them for not following trends, as it gets to the point that the popular trend loses it's value in the future because its flooded with "copycat" games. right now, other gaming giants seem too focused on Fortniteification of their live service games. other then that, a lot of aaa games outside of Nintendo look and play the same (i'm looking at you, shooters)
i think there's not a single company let alone multi billion multi national conglomerate that i agree with all of their decisions but i can say most of the decisions that i (or from what i can gather the vocal populace online) find to be annoying amount to their values not aligning with what i (or more frequently people online) want them to do (i.e. their emulation policies, the way they approach content creation, not supporting given features). all things considered - i VASTLY prefer that to feeling like they're actively trying to scam me like i do with most other major players in the gaming space.
No I don't thair outdated actions are literally hurting content creators and fans heck I used to be a fan of Nintendo but I'm not anymore because of how scummy the company is
TBH, I feel that it's Sony & Microsoft who are stuck in the past. They've been doing this "realistic game" spiel since at least the early-mid 2000s. The "more powerful console" babble was done by Sony with the PS3 & done later on with the PS4, then done again with the PS5. Microsoft? They did that with the original Xbox, then the Xbox 360, then the Xbox One, so on(in the case of Microsoft, they weren't the only American company that did this. Atari did that with the Lynx & Jaguar, & well... look at how THOSE turned out). Following trends is just a disguise that they're doing to PRETEND that they're in the future & even THEN, Concord can be argued to be stuck in the past in terms of gameplay & concept with how it's just a simple Fortnite clone with no changes outside of generic character design & ugly cutscenes. Nintendo on the other hand is far ahead of them, innovating new ways to play & new world designs to be inspired by, making new ideas for gameplay genres, etc. As much as I don't like a fair bit of Nintendo's practices, they're the LEAST guilty of the 3.
Sometimes companies have to learn not to “fix” what isn’t broken. Prime example is how “the future of PlayStation” was a total flop and a waste of 8 years and 400 million dollars, while the little mascot platformer that they didn’t even bother advertising, is likely gonna be game of the year. The little platformer collectathon that evokes 90s and early 2000s nostalgia, is so good and beloved, that for once journalists and players agreed on it being a 9-10 game. So yeah, sometimes being “stuck in the past” is good.
I remember seeing this trend as early as the 7th generation, the first HD consoles were dominated by cookie cutter shooters whose marketing focused solely on the graphics, graphic violence might be part of that marketing but graphics were always at the forefront. And all the guys around me ate that shit up, I still remember this one obnoxious guy in high school who acted like Gears of War was the second coming just because of its graphics and graphic violence, he even gave me shit for not liking Gears because in his mind I had to admire the graphics, like it was blasphemy to not get a massive boner over said graphics. It got even worse once PS4 and Xbone came out, it even got toxic with people calling those of us with a Wii U names, I even had a few people resort to personal attacks about me being autistic, transgender, and other things I won't mention here. So I know exactly what you're talking about and have been saying this since I was 14, for perspective I'm currently 32 at the time of writing this.
all of that checks out. it’s an evolution(?) of sega of america’s marketing strat. it’s not enough for them to peddle the “bleeding edge” if tech as “cool” they also felt the need to bully people that didn’t attribute value to what they think is cool.
I grew up a Sony kid but boy are they making it difficult to defend them lately. Astro Bot is the best thing to happen this year and it feels more like a miracle in a sea of mistakes than the expected masterpiece after masterpiece from previous generations. Anyway, looking forward to Switch 2!
i agree! i did as well! to the point where when anyone in my family knows about what i do for a living they are SHOCKED that i don’t have a playstation channel lol. i’ve always had all of the major platforms growing up & spent my time skewed towards the one with the exclusives i enjoyed the most (like now) playstation fell off a cliff for me starting with the 2011 hack after they refused to refund an unauthorized $250 transaction on my ps account (& the series of Ls that followed lol)
One of the reasons that Sony and Microsoft games cost so much money and time to make is because they all have a realistic art style. Nintendo's franchises on the other hand almost all have either a cartoon art style or an anime art style so it costs almost nothing to make games and takes about 2 or 3 years to be made. If spiderman 2 had only sold 1 million copies it would have been the ends of the world, princess peach showtime sold just over 1 million copies and we will probably get a sequel in the future
yeah. “realistic” art styles aren’t worth. they age terribly most of the time & end up all looking the same so would be a win win if that wasn’t what most other devs aim for.
i’ll add that there’s some inaccurate things here like it doesn’t cost “almost nothing” & major nintendo games take longer than 2-3 years to make but even still they find ways to make them consistently profitable
@@WatchReDirect By almost nothing I mean that most Nintendo games that are not as big as Zelda TOTK cost something like 40 or 50 million to make, that is nothing compared to Sony and Microsoft games that cost something like 200 million to 300 million to make. Even if it is a small game like Concord
I remember someone at Nintendo saying something along the lines of “We are competing for our customers attention, not their money.” Sony and Microsoft have pretty much lost my attention but I’m always excited for what Nintendo is doing.
I've been saying the same thing for years. Anyone in buisness should know ppl dont buy the product, we buy the "compelling outcome" which in gaming is FUN!!! the promise of having a wonderful experience. When you chase trends in the way sony has, you think ppl are buying these games because of the genre. When ppl are buying because what they're experiencing.
When ppl play Nintendo games like BOTW it give a strong sense of adventure and exploration. It creates wonder of what over the next mountain. This happened while most open world games were having you check off boxes of icons on a map. Nintendos goals is to invoke emotion in the player
Heck, even when they re-release older games, it gives new people, regardless of their age, an opportunity to finally play them. I can name multiple games from this generation, NSO included, that got some kind of re-release for people to finally play them for the first time or just again.
Here's a paraphrased Lythero quote about the difference in loading times, price, and amount of bugs in Nintendo vs PS and Xbox games: "There's so much game, the game takes really long to load!!" "My game kinda just works (while holidng a switch running Mario Galaxy)"
Been around awhile. Before NES. I have never seen nor thought a young person would/could understand what/how NTD is and does. Great job explaining essentially “lateral thinking with weathered technology”.
While other consoles focus on how the game looks and its running power, these company’s failed to see that what really matters is that if the games are enjoyable and feel good, which is where Nintendo thrives.
sad part is they don't *really* care about how the games run. they just care about what they look like. otherwise the leading talking point couldn't be 4k or ray tracing when the latest consoles still won't be able to run gta 6 at 60fps lol
Yes but they are a bit scummy when it comes to retro games an expensive subscription for 20 year old plus games when Microsoft gives you current games for only a bit more. Honestly the steam deck is the best just emulate like everything.
@@cosmicsvids the nso + expansion is less than $10 a month - even less if you divide that amongst the 8 people allowed on the family plan. that’s not expensive lol. whether you wanna emulate is up to you but some people don’t want to navigate that legal mine field & even less people want to jump through the technical hurdles. rather pay the publisher of the video games a few pennies a day to seamlessly access the games, personally.
Im not a fanboy of any company. But of i had my choice of the latest xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo system. I'll always choose Nintendo. I like my games to be games and not 8 to 40 hour movies with intermittent segments of gaming.
Developers in the 90's: making money. Developers in the 2010's~2020's: "Developing video games is too expensive, we have to fire everyone, microtransactions everywhere, put a drill up gamers' asses, gamergate evil, RHEEEEEEE!" Nintendo in 2020's developing like it's the 90's: making money.
Nintendo isnt perfect and im sure we can all agree there. However, I will never see a battle pass in my next Mario mainline game. The game won't look at me and demand more money even though i already purchased the game. Sony really rested on the PS4 laurels and we are now seeing the other side of that. Shoot even Xbox legit has games coming like Doom and Perfect Dark. Both are reapected IP's. Idk as much as Nintendo can be very stingy I think they have really nailed it with the Switch. Time will tell how the next console will go.
Nintendo is doing well because of fun games . Not because of high end tech. Saying the company should stay stuck in the past. Also means games never discount, and the online service is horrid. So no Nintendo needs to mature in some areas an adapt .
lowering prices isn’t a modernization. their games remain launch price because they don’t want to arbitrarily devalue their games to make a line go up on a spreadsheet. publishers that place their old games on sale don’t do so because they are more modern, they do it because they can report to their shareholders that their games hit arbitrary sales milestones.
as far as the online service, that’s just consumers misplacing expectations. switch online isn’t an isp. some games have subpar online play. others don’t. that is true for 1st & 3rd party games. the determining factor is the developer making a game that plays well online on their end, not by magically making nso “better”
I'm fine paying full price to a video game as long as it's enjoyable. I bought BOTW at full price during lockdown and it's still my most played game with 350 hours
Nintendo is not free from fault as we saw in the Wi era. In fact, they fell guilty of the Blue Ocean Strategy that they somewhat forgot about their core audience who are the ones buying their games al the time. While they are still trying to reach to casual gamers, Nintendo made their cor fans a priority with the Switch. Gamers keep on asking for better graphics, but if the game is not fun, then they won't get those games. I want to play Astro Bot, but I don't have a PS this gen, nor am I enticed to have one. However, the developer kind of hinted at a pc version, so there's that.
I don't know...the Blue Ocean Strategy with the Wii did make some new fans though, so it probably wasn't all for nothing. There are a lot of Nintendo fans who's first consoles were the Wii.
The only 2 things I loathe about nintendo are their refusal to understand how to properly price/discount games (mario vs dk being $50 should be a war crime), and how awful they are with striking down outside sources like fan projects. Compared to microsoft/playstation, its not even a contest Nintendo is by far the best. Microsoft is so absurdly blinded by bolstering gamepass but they're hurting their studios to do it, especially ones that provide actual talent like Tango while constantly funneling money into Bethesda/ActiBlizz/343 that make garbage. Sony completely became the villains this gen, doing their stupid shit with helldivers 2 and now other PS games on steam, Jim Ryan being a mega asshole for a while before stepping down, concord... Existing, and just when astro bot gave me some confidence they try to sell us minimal graphical upgrades for $700 WITHOUT A DISK DRIVE OR STAND. The other 2 need to look at Iwata's warnings and heavily consider them, because at this point I genuinely cannot give you a reason to own an xbox series whatever its called cause their naming is terrible, or a ps5. Compelling exclusives (if they exist) for both are going to steam now, and console prices are getting so dumb for them that you're better off just saving up for a gaming pc.
Great video. Agree w/ most of it. I’m a huge Sony fan but they have such a variety and diversity in IP & genres that I’m jealous of the fact that they never took the Nintendo approach with said ip by investing in them to make them these household names like a Mario and Pokémon. Hell, I think they would’ve even had an advantage over Nintendo in some regards since they have games that appeal to casual audiences but also games that are deemed more “mature” and adult games like GoW, shooters like Killzone, horror with Siren and Until Dawn. Not to say that Nintendo doesn’t have mature games but they have less of those than Sony. Idk. I just think these companies limit themselves in many ways. Hopefully Astro Bot was the first step in change. 🙏
As a person who gets riled up at critical things I enjoy, I appreciated your disclaimer up front. Luckily I am a Nintendo fan and that doesn’t happen too… often…
what was fun on nostalgia of toon games since PS1 And GBA Now people are heavily focused on graphics and drama. i want my old toon games back. Ty the Tasmanian tiger 3 must rise. it's been too long!
I do believe that a Nintendo Switch pro did existed but I was in the minority of that I genuinely didn’t want a pro version and instead put the resources and effort into the switch 2 which I’m glad that they did so. I have a feeling if we did get a Nintendo Switch pro, I’d have a feeling that it would suffer the same fate as the PS5 pro except imo the Switch pro probably would have gotten its own exclusives mainly 3rd party exclusives to capitalize the power of the Switch pro. On paper a Switch pro doesn’t sound bad but when you think about it, would it be a good investment for Nintendo? Would it be a decent upgrade to the Switch and would it make people want it? When you see the specs on the og Switch compared to the leaked specs on the Switch 2, that’s a huge difference in power, storage and battery life but I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo were to pull a Sony and release a Switch 2 pro lol you never know what Nintendo will do.
i really don't mind old hardware for a lower price and make games look like 60fps on 1440p. but i don't mind them stepping up their hardware, as long as they don't do too damn much and care for their games like a newborn baby then i'll happily pay 399 or 499 for a hybrid. i really hope nintendo doesn't become greedy
I've been a nintendo fanboy since my childhood wii, I'll admit that wholeheartedly. But aside from PC, there is very little this generation has to offer that feels like prying me from nintendos's grip, and that is damning. If i were born 20 years earlier, i could see myself getting a ps2 or even ps1 over nintendo's offerings, because the advanced tech back then led to better products. The switch has quickly become the ps2 to sony and microsoft's gamecubes for the opposite reason.
Love them or hate them Nintendo simply will not be swayed into mimicking what’s popular; I love the deviation from normal takes on genre’s like FPS and fighters and they didn’t step into open world games until they were ready & willing to do so and then they’ve tripled down on the concept. Their whole execution is more deliberate. Definitely not perfect but a net positive for sure. Quality to varying degrees.
I may absolutely hate how defensive Nintendo gets the second they decide that the way we enjoy games is wrong and they decide that there way of doing things is the only way But if there way of doing things means the high quality games continue then I don’t think I can say that I’m not a fan of them
Honesty, I'm considering switching to nintendo when the switch 2 comes out. I'm just a tiny bit scared that they will change and become like sony or Microsoft but I mean what are the chances
i think they’re pretty low. nintendo has been the same front runner of the generation or not. they’re definitely not perfect but i contend they’re about as good as it gets when it comes to multibillion dollar multinational conglomerates lol
Nintendo is that kid in school that don't follow ppl or groups, they do there own things even if was good or bad. They tasted failure and learn from it. other platforms (i believe could be wrong) have there name to keep them going but ultimately sooner or later people would want more then just a name.
I hear about trash games from every other company besides Nintendo. I’ve not once seen a heap of channels go “This game is trash” on the same level as they did for Concord or Forspoken. Not even Scarlet/Violet got that treatment.
@@QuantumChrist Ye. But will they buy Switch2 games? Also: what baout those people who want to buy 3DS games? N64 games? SNES games? And if their only option is, then how many will consider doing it to switch-games too?
I haven’t played my series s in more than half a year, which is still gathering dust. I’ve never even bought a ps5, and I even got a 2nd gen ps4 pro cuz all of my like two ps4’s were louder than a jet engine. I’ll never get any other console than a Nintendo made console, only because Sony and Microsoft have just made themselves look like clowns tbh. I’d love a newer PC, but besides that my switch is still being used the same as I got it first year
To be fair, there are aspects that Nintendo can learn from the competition on. More diversity in their games regarding playable women, people of color, & LGBTQ+ folks outside of a few key divisions (EPD 5 for Splatoon & AC, EPD 9 for ARMS, MonolithSoft for Xenobalde, etc.) would be a good start. Well, that & actual accessibility options in their games......where Nintendo is honestly the laughing stock of the industry on. Not to mention Nintendo actually taking voice acting more seriously by unionizing their English voice productions, which they've very rarely done in recent years without outside influences (Marvel Games, PlatinumGames, etc.). Nintendo is doing great in many aspects, but they definitely need to step it up in other areas.
i think it’s fair to say they have room to improve. everything in existence does. but most of these things aren’t exactly outliers that they alone don’t do well enough, the entire industry is ALSO bad at it on top of the laundry list of things their greed makes them worse at
@@WatchReDirect Nintendo is a pretty big outlier when it comes to accessibility, at least of the Big 3 first-party publishers. The same goes for voice acting. But diversity is an aspect Nintendo is showing some improvement for, though at a slower rate than the rest of the industry. Though in that case, you can definitely grill others for different kinds of failings on that front (Ex: Sony’s streak of killing off Black characters in their games, The Last of Us especially).
Nintendo focuses more on their first party franchises which are marketed for kids and have existed for years. I doubt they'll put any LGBTQIA+ material in them since it's not really necessary and it wouldn't fit with their identity. It fits in something like Zelda for example, but there's no point in putting it in something like Mario it Kirby. But if they'd make another life simulation game like Tomodachi Life 2 for example, it would be nice to include same sex relationships or other personality options so some people could be represented better. Maybe they could do it with new franchises, but it'll depend on what kind of games they'll be.
I heavily disagree with the first part of your comment. Nintendo shouldn't learn from their competitors because Sony and Xbox are shitty at it. Nintendo has had far more playable women than the other two (correct me if am wrong, but I am 90% sure on those). Another thing is that Sony and Xbox don't really do it because they care, but mostly just to check boxes. You even pointed out how black characters get killed a lot. Another thing you seem to ignore is quality over quantity and the fact that not every game needs to be diverse. Some games it just doesn't work out in it. And having a few great diverse characters is better than having a bad one in every game. why I am saying this is? because most of the diverse characters are either a Mary sue or horribly written or just an uninteresting character with zero personality. Truth is: if the diversity isn't made with good intention and executed well, it turns out terribly.
Accessibility is DEFINITELY something they need to improve on. But, while there is definitely room for improvement in the games (that can and *should* be called out), there has been a lot of progress recently- and there’s also been a lot of progress in the company internally. They are making a concerted effort to bring in more female employees but also make sure that they can be in leadership and creative roles. They recently added more women to the board of directors, and they’ve increasingly been training and bringing in female creatives to be at higher positions in game development. Something that I especially have to commend them for, however, is how they treat their gay employees- they treat employees in same-sex partnerships the same way that they treat married employees, including in benefits, even though gay marriage is currently illegal in Japan. Nintendo is not perfect. But, as much as we absolutely should call out areas that need improvement, we also should celebrate when improvements do happen.
My main issue is that they sell 5 or 6 year old games for full price. That's why I haven't played mamy first party games on switch, just ones that are cheap second hand. Getting a mig switch soon though so I'm excited to try a lot of stuff out
this is a personal problem lol. they have a prolific library of games that dwarfs most other modern platforms in quality AND quantity. not having games you personally want to give a shot for whatever reason is a different thing than not having games at all lol
Thanks for watching! What do you think about Nintendo’s approach vs the industry? ALSO, thoughts on the editing/pace of the video? experimenting with hiring an editor & I’m curious if you guys noticed an increase in quality at all?

Here’s the difference between Nintendo and everyone else
Nintendo: I want the most money possible
Everyone else: I want the most money NOW. GIVE IT.
!!!!!
So it boils down to: make games.
Yes its old but we are at the point where it can't get much better so even xbox 360 still looks good even if it only runs at 30 frames
Putting consumers and developers first and treating them like people rather than sources of income makes a huge difference. Chasing profits for profits' sake may work short term, but is terrible long term. Unfortunately success seems to make these companies lose sight of what caused the success in the first place.
💯💯💯
absolutely. it’s wild to me that this is something people cheer on in the moment. like i get the idea of being a fan of the “winning team” but being a fan of a corporation winning at your expense is wild to me lol
People will bring 100 things wrong about Nintendo and their overpriced games or whatever
But to me in my opinion the most important thing is how Nintendo treats their employees and game development in a sustainable way.
Customers having to deal with expensive Nintendo games is one thing but employees at Sony Microsoft constantly losing their jobs is literally killing the industry.
People who make games have their lives ruined and it’s a much worse issue than nitpicking Nintendo’s flaws which for the most part are harmless.
I think becoming a game dev is a terrible idea in this current environment.
the "overpriced" game narrative is very overblown. if they were overpriced the market would course correct.
Their full prices tho are in line with the rest of the industry (even taking into account the restraints in what they can do with their hardware) and their way of making games profitable tends to not be way less predatory than other companies (mario kart tour is the exception, not the rule)
i just want their copyright department to be more lenient.
As someone who doesn’t own a PS5 and hasn’t played Astro Bot, the idea that it’s “Basically Super Mario Galaxy 3” is the best idea I’ve heard for a big budget game in a while.
The game is awesome. Low stakes gameplay that truly shows off duel sense controller 🎉

It's probably telling that I personally haven't owned a non-Nintendo console since the PS2 (and do the rest of my gaming on PC)... but none the less I do think there are two areas where Nintendo really need to improve:
1) Online multiplayer
The whole friend code mess is an incredible annoyance that shouldn't exist anymore, and people should have the built-in option to use voice chat. (Voice chat isn't for me, personally, but it's perfectly possible to satisfy both audiences who do and don't want to use it.)
2) Accounts and digital content availability
The whole mess of having one-way transfers of digital content between the Wii and Wii U was so clumsy and unnecessary.
Nintendo aren’t in the past. Sony and Microsoft were just in a hurry to reach the future that not everyone has caught up with them.
Couldn't agree more.
Eh, I'd say it's Sony & Microsoft who are in the past. Their strategies only worked several years ago & that magic is gone now.
Nearly every game I see from playstation’s first party studios in particular look near identical.
I love Nintendo's commitment to being Nintendo
same!
No I don't thair outdated actions are literally hurting content creators and fans heck I used to be a fan of Nintendo but I'm not anymore because of how scummy the company is
Nintendo is not perfect- but compared to the rest of the triple an industry, they really stand out (in a good way).
Facts, they know what we like for the most part.
Nintendos major weakness is how litigious they are. PlayStation can’t make games that people want to play. I don’t even want to mention Xbox.
Big N is INNOCENT compared to the rest of the 3
Man, Sony really makes it difficult to be fans of theirs anymore. Any momentum they have is fumes from ps2 era lol
TRUUUUUUUUE (& even ps1/ps2 feels unearned IMO since most of peoples favorites generally have little to nothing to do with Sony/PlayStation)
So I know exactly what you're talking about and have been saying this since I was 14, for perspective I'm currently 32 at the time of writing this.
all of that checks out. it’s an evolution(?) of sega of america’s marketing strat. it’s not enough for them to peddle the “bleeding edge” if tech as “cool” they also felt the need to bully people that didn’t attribute value to what they think is cool.
they call those times the good old days of gaming when you know they only played bc it was trendy
Nah they also played them cuz they were fun. Not just because they were trendy.
STOP
They werent cookie cutter
A thing I learned with time is to not be anybody's kid, no matter how much you love their games
I remember someone at Nintendo saying something along the lines of “We are competing for our customers attention, not their money.”
Sony and Microsoft have pretty much lost my attention but I’m always excited for what Nintendo is doing.
yeah absolutely. like OBVIOUSLY they want our money but it's so easy to see that they care so much more about how they EARN that money.
Nintendos goals is to invoke emotion in the player
very well said. completely agree with that.
Heck, even when they re-release older games, it gives new people, regardless of their age, an opportunity to finally play them. I can name multiple games from this generation, NSO included, that got some kind of re-release for people to finally play them for the first time or just again.
Nintendo held their own in this cutthroat industry, with a f*cking tablet. This proves that gameplay trumps graphics any day!
@@WatchReDirect Yeah hardware is a bit of an issue for Nintendo. But if they can improve on that then the results could be INSANE

Im not a fanboy of any company. But of i had my choice of the latest xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo system. I'll always choose Nintendo. I like my games to be games and not 8 to 40 hour movies with intermittent segments of gaming.
Developers in the 90's: making money.
Developers in the 2010's~2020's: "Developing video games is too expensive, we have to fire everyone, microtransactions everywhere, put a drill up gamers' asses, gamergate evil, RHEEEEEEE!"
Nintendo in 2020's developing like it's the 90's: making money.
So no Nintendo needs to mature in some areas an adapt .
lowering prices isn’t a modernization. their games remain launch price because they don’t want to arbitrarily devalue their games to make a line go up on a spreadsheet. publishers that place their old games on sale don’t do so because they are more modern, they do it because they can report to their shareholders that their games hit arbitrary sales milestones.
as far as the online service, that’s just consumers misplacing expectations. switch online isn’t an isp. some games have subpar online play. others don’t. that is true for 1st & 3rd party games. the determining factor is the developer making a game that plays well online on their end, not by magically making nso “better”
the ONLY THING they need to fix is not getting cocky and despising fanworks and even remote similar games.
I'm fine paying full price to a video game as long as it's enjoyable. I bought BOTW at full price during lockdown and it's still my most played game with 350 hours
Mario still made more sales than Astro bot

@@yarc9 yeah. so is ps5, though tbf. we’ll know how well it actually sold once we know international figures.
Astro Bot deserves better.
If they put that game on Switch it'll sell better on Switch them the PS5 🤷
They should also be stuck in the past in the sense of releasing complete games instead of physical versions requiring download.
I’m gonna stick to pc, but Nintendo seems to be the only company that still lives by their legacy and what made them successful.
As a person who gets riled up at critical things I enjoy, I appreciated your disclaimer up front. Luckily I am a Nintendo fan and that doesn’t happen too… often…
what was fun on nostalgia of toon games since PS1 And GBA
Now people are heavily focused on graphics and drama. i want my old toon games back.
Brilliant essay. I’ve been waiting for someone to say this loudly for a long time
thank you!
Nintendo forever!
🫡
Pc forever for me and emulators all the way
ngl Nintendo should just make and official emulator so you can play the retro games you want
Great video!
thanks!
Please make the graphics better nintendo.. HDR 10+ or 4K on dock.. cause lets be real it sucks now on switch 1
I may absolutely hate how defensive Nintendo gets the second they decide that the way we enjoy games is wrong and they decide that there way of doing things is the only way
But if there way of doing things means the high quality games continue then I don’t think I can say that I’m not a fan of them
Honesty, I'm considering switching to nintendo when the switch 2 comes out.

But, as much as we absolutely should call out areas that need improvement, we also should celebrate when improvements do happen.

hey little buddy do you need a hug
If Nintendo fans don't demand better ,they will keep getting rubbish ports of 3ds games .😂
No one cares about you lol.
My switch is catching dust. They just don’t have a lot of games.
this is a personal problem lol. they have a prolific library of games that dwarfs most other modern platforms in quality AND quantity.
not having games you personally want to give a shot for whatever reason is a different thing than not having games at all lol
tf Nintendo pumps out the most WDYM😭🙏
No one cares about you.
Nintendo sucks
sure buddy lmao
Yeah sucks all of Xbox and Sony players
We all suck
As Sony pony and xbots, Seeing Nintendo as successful with Zero (0) debt as a company sucks for you. 😆 ...cope with mountain of salt hater 🧂🧂🧂
