Gena Baker for guitar skills i rate magic sam higher than b b king & skip james, fred mcdowell, john lee hooker buddy guy,t bone walker jimi hendrix,i could name more but for me bb wasnt the king of the blues there are so many top bluesmen who get no recognition.bb was technically sound but for me he didnt play raw enough,i know he just died so im not coating him off he had his moments.but he him self wouldnt of said he was the best thats the industry putting that label on him.
When was this film shot? Anybady knows? The clothes and the Black and white image suggest it's from the early sixties. Hair cuts are a bit loose for the period? the use of the fuzz on the second number, too. These guitars were available in the mid seventies(no real Gibson here, a japanese copy). Although he sounds good on it, the japanese copy suggest he had little money at the time...
swingmanu this is from 69, recorded for the American Folk Blues fest tour in europe (DVDs are out there, worth a buy for any fan of this music, all of them). He’s borrowing Earl Hooker’s guitar here, which yes was a Univox copy. AFAIK Univox was all US-made until the 70s though.
Thxs for this very exhaustive answer! I didn't know copies this close to the originals were already available at the time. I remember seing them coming to European stores circa 75. And still wonder how they didn't get sued... thanks for posting. I'll try to get a hold of these DVDs
I'd be surprised as shit if Johnny Winters , Vaughn , ZZ Top and a bunch others I can name didn't have every Magic Sam record cause the guy was a phenom AND ORIGINAL .... oh , Alvin Lee and this song could have easily been played at Woodstock " Lookin Good " they would have loved it ...
Jamie Davey, I do think Magic Sam is AWESOME, but I had never heard of him til I was on TH-cam. I have Magic Sam on my play list. But like a lot of great artist, they get overlooked. It happens in all areas of the music business. Now I will get to enjoy Magic Sam on TH-cam.
Gena Baker i agree thats why i dont listen to radio, the playlists are brought so there is no musical freedom or education about the truest & most talented people on our planet.always keep searching & you will find it on utube but you gotta search hard & your realise most of the best music ever made was on small independant labels.checkout my lists i have picked many gems ive found, blues, popcorn, soul, funk, jazz funk fusion, garage punk psych reggae, music picked by a musician who keeps searching for true talent originality freedom of speech & passion.peace

Major influence on Gary Clark Jr. Great jams!
way a head of his time . and many tried to play like this
true that
This ^^^
I only know of one man who can play like this. The great Bill Abel my dear dear friend and a direct link to the Delta Blues MASTERS!
oddly enough i can see this guy as a MAJOR influence to hendrix
same singing style.. guitars similar but older
this guys a fucking beast
Yep. I sure do hear Magic Sam's influence in Gary Clark Jr's style. Love Gary but he has a way to go before he hits this level.
Anyone know whos on drums and bass?
