I'm Mexican American, light skinned, green eyes, I worked with lots of coworkers from Mexico, El Salvador etc, many didn't speak English so I would speak to them in my 85-90% at best Spanish which they appreciated, the usually white employees would come up and ask me if I learned Spanish in school, I would say no that I learned as a kid at home from my grandparents, they would ask "Are you half white?", that would annoy me so much, my family has all colors and heights, then they would make fun of my accent and say I sounded American, yeah, I was born in the USA and don't have a Mexican accent. Funny thing, no Mexicans etc ever complained about the way I spoke, they only appreciated that I could communicate with them.
Don't feel too bad Mexico - citizens of the USA are just as clueless when it comes to their northern neighbours in Canada. Mexican food is indeed amazing. Here in the US we have "Mexican" restaurants, but it doesn't even compare with the authentic Mexican food, its just in whole another level.
@@jazmine9570 Yeah it seems like restaurants try to make the food more appealing to white ppl, they use cheese and sour cream a lot, also Mexican food is a lot more than tacos , burritos and enchiladas.
I think it's because in the US they modified the idea of Mexican food to work with what they have on hand to prepare it... Some ingredients or processes can be hard to obtain outside of Mexico so they created "Mexican inspired" dishes that are most suited to their ingredients and taste... Which is great and everything, I just wish they could be upfront about not being really mexican...
@Λίνα Μοργκάνα The Mexican population has genetic contributions from different origins regardless color of the skin, eyes or hair. In Mexico, we never fill out documents with our "race" or "ethnicity". We´re all Mexicans.
That's because starving Irish people immigrated to Mexico during the Great Famine of 1845. Most Irish are Catholic and wanted to live in a Catholic country. See the history of the San Patricio's. So true...I lived in Europe, the USA and Canada now and I always get that question, "Why don't you look Mexican?" My answer is always What should mexicans look like? Oh boy that stops the questioning. People forget that being Mexican is a Nationality with such a broad diversity in ethnic groups (e.g., Indigenous, Mestizo, African, European, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, etc) and the truth is that the melting pot in Mexico already happened 200 years ago, and more new arrivals continue to come every year who bring more diversity to the population. Go north and you will find large Mexican-Chinese communities and Mexican Menonites in Chihuaha, Guadalajara region French and German descendants in los Altos de Jalisco, Central Mexico has descendants of Spaniards, French and German with Indigenous roots, and the main capital has a large Korean-Mexican community and Eastern European and Mid-East Jewish communities, south west coast in Oaxaca Afro-Mexicans, east coast in Veracruz has descendants of Afro-Mexicans, Spanish, Lebanese, Syrian, Italians, and of course local indigenous groups, and if you go to Chiapas you will find one of the largest communities with descendants of Mexican-Japanese people. So, I would say that even though the majority of Mexican citizens are descendants of Indigenous people, not everyone in Mexico is monochromatic, homogenous, or share the same ethnic background despite the fact that might seem the same externally but something for sure, they all share the same-strong national identity. It is indeed a melting pot that happened years ago while in the USA is just happening now. Great video, thanks again!!!

I worked as a waitress in USA. Believe me, every single day I was asked about my ethnicity or country of origin or my family background. I´m white, green eyes, and they couldn´t believe it. When I answered "I´m from Mexico," people replied "New Mexico?" and I always told them: "No. The Old Mexico." One day someone at college asked me: "Where are you from" (We were inside an elevetor and he asked me which floor and I answered the floor number that I was going to) and because I was so tired of the same question asked for about 4 years back then I answered: "I´m from planet earth." Then, I found out that he was a teacher, hahaha. Also, people often said that my accent wasn´t Mexican (and it is, I´m Mexican), that it was european. Something weird that happened is that my English conversation teacher (I took English as a Second Language classes) was from South Africa and well, I guess that I took his accent; so people said something like, "there´s white people in South Africa and your teacher taught like that..." That´s far away from the truth, because my teacher was black, teaching a white Mexican the English language. Something wierd, only in USA I´m considered a "white Mexican," in México I´m just another Mexican and that´s awesome... Hahahaha.
Yo soy de Monterrey y cuando fui a Cancun de vacaciones, un canadiense me pregunto de donde era y le dije que de México. Su respuesta fue que no lo podía creer porque soy blanco.

@@estebanmartinelli3735 Nope, for starters, the Aztecs are only one of many groups that used to inhabit the territory. Two, there were also Africans that were brought to the colony or migrated when Mexico proclaimed that slavery was abolished there decades before the US.

Hahahaha.

A US citizen that came for an exchange program in Puebla asked me "where did you buy your Tenis?", I was wearing some Nike tenis, I said "I got them at The Nike Factory" he went wide eyed and said "you got Nike factory in Mexico!?!?, I thought you had to buy Nike from the USA!"
because you can only buy Nike brand on the USA...
For me the top two are

A question I got frequently from my Dutch family & friends: 'How can you live in such a poor country without electricity, internet, modern transportation, or a decent roof over your head?'
And then I had to explain them that Mexico is actually a thriving and even leading country nowadays when it comes to energy, internet coverage (about 98.5% of all people living in DF actually have a cell phone, a computer or both, while that coverage in the Netherlands is still only 95-96%), most people in DF have a brand new car, and the houses have improved much to the standard of European houses in regard to energy and insolation!

We live in cities like yours, with different architecture inherited from Spain" - Now I recall that as hilarious; however, next time I will ask back "Where are your druids? Which Celtic tribe do you belong to?". Another time I was asked by a few Japanese lab mates if I were of Japanese ancestry "No, as I know. It's because we have ancestors in common". Another time an old American man asked me if I were from Germany - "No, I'm Mexican". Back in Mexico (Monterrey city metro area), some Mexicans took me as Korean. "No, I'm not".
