- Senior FDOT Weight Inspector Dennis Hegman has over 22 years on the job. He explains the inner workings of a sophisticated weigh in motion scale located in Wildwood, Florida. +roger brandt In my years in Alabama I have met many Alabama State Troopers that are just like him. One of my best friends is retired from the IRS/DOT. He was a conformance officer. (little white dodge truck at the scales) I never knew him to be a hard ass except to one man that told him he was crazy and to get of his property. This was at a truck stop during a motorcycle ride. He went back after a month and raked the guy over, thrashed him, and wrote him a warning instead of $70,000.00 in fines. Can't say much bad about a guy like that. This guy even reminds me of my buddy.

I am an ex driver and enjoyed every minute of this vid, I used to go to Fl at least once a week. I remember going through a Wi coop one time in the 90's and they pulled me in for a paperwork check. I walked in there, he looks it over and says I can leave. Before I stuck my foot out the door he wanted to ask me one question. He asked if I wore my seat belt' I told him with a grin, I only put it on going through scale houses and walked out the door

It hits us in the pocket when trucks are overweight. Highway repairs costs millions. It helps Georgia also because overweight trucks tear up the highways from coast to coast. Georgia and the other states benefit from Florida's weigh stations doing their job.

Fantastic video! Dennis had my attention the entire time. He should be in an educational position for the State! 5 years from retirement and unless he has a hand in training the new guys.....his way of thinking will be lost in the future. I very much enjoyed this! Thank you.

Back when I was driving in I believe it was 2005 or maybe 6 . I went in to the scale in Hope Arkansas with a heavy load. I had put on a half tank of fuel and was maybe over weight in Little Rock so I was a little weary about the scale house. So he stops me on the scale for about three or four minutes. Then my heart jumps up in my throat . Red light pull around and park and come in. Didn’t say anything about paper work or anything. So I gathered it all up and he opens his back door and starts waving me to come in so I do leaving my paper work since he seems to be upset or in a hurry. I was pulling a DC ten Cat Bulldozer with the blade disassembled on the rear of my spread axle lowboy trailer. Scared I was in bad trouble I walked in hurriedly. When I got in he had cake and ice cream and offered me cake and ice cream and asked if I was in a hurry. I told him no that he had scared me pretty much that I would need awhile to settle my blood pressure down. Laughing he said he had called his wife to come with a instamatic camera to take our picture. He had been working that scale since it had opened and he never had a truck come across the scale with exactly 80,000 lbs. until I crossed the scale. It was five minutes before 12 midnight his quitting time. It was his retirement cake and ice cream that the staff had brought out to him at nine that night. No one run the scale after midnight and they told him he could leave then after the party . He said he wanted to stay till his shift was over because he had never left early his whole life and wasn’t going to do it on his last night. His wife came and took our pictures and we stayed there till around one in the morning visiting. I hugged them both and told them I would see them at the Family reunion because when his wife kept looking at me and she said are you kin to the McKay’s family and I said my grandmother who raised me is a McKay and her grandmother and mine are sisters. I told her I remembered her but couldn’t place her until she asked me about the McKay’s. I asked why he never came and he said I always had to work. He was at our reunion later that year and we all had a good laugh about how 80,000 lbs could effect a family. SEMPER FIDELIS

Complete bullshit. First of all what's a DC10 Cat bulldozer? They made a D10, not a DC10. Which the shipping weight is roughly 110,000 lbs, theres no way in hell that you were hauling that with a 40,000 lb blade on the back of your lowboy. That's called a divisible load. I haul RT cranes and my empty weight for my particular set up is about 65000 lb. Also Arkansas does not allow overweight loads travel at night. This story is complete bulshit.
This what "reality tv" should be. But it's not so I am more than happy to come to YT to watch this.

I was a OTR Truck Driver for over 44 years. I mainly hauled "Over Dimensional" Loads and I have been pulled into the scales at Wildwood, Fl. on numerous occasions. I remember Mr. Hegman being on duty there and talked with him several time over the years. I would Completely agree he is One of the Fairest Officers I ever met. I used to stop there in Wildwood and go to the "Chrome Shop" there just west of I-75. OH, the money I have spent there over the years! I'm retired now and just found this video and I had to write and say something GOOD about the "Chicken Coop's" ha-ha. lol.

This has got to be one of the best interviews that I've ever heard (and seen). Never have I been more proud to be a big rigger than I am right now. And a note for those who made this film; Closing with those same trucks that weighed, showing them rolling down the road broud a tear to my eye. After 33 years in the saddle, let me tell you that took some doing. We as drivers need this.... information, presented in a one-on-one manner. Thanks so muchto everybody who took part in this presentation. It makes a guy feel like maybe some folks appreciate truckers after all.

Just ran across this... I'm long retired now, but have to validate everything he said. I'm one of those old timers who used to park for the night in the back lot, never a problem, never been treated unfair in Florida.
Several years ago entering FL on 75 I began asking on the radio if anybody had placards for Hazardous gas. I did this even while in line for the scale. Finally I heard a strong base station reply, (from the scale house,) "What are you hauling driver?"
I knew they were getting all ready to write me a big one when I answered, "22 tons of Bush Bros beans." There was laughter on the radio, the weighmaster could only look up at me and shake his head. Honestly, it's not as much fun out here on the road as it used to be.
I was driving one night(years ago) and this trouper was telling everyone were he was, what mile sticker he was sitting at, and finally some driver asked why he was doing that and the trouper said "that way you aint got no excuse", sure enough when i went by that yard stick he was sitting right next to it running radar, gotta love a civil servant with a sense of humor.

I got ya. It is one of my pet peeves for a truck, whether it's still on the highway making an approach to a weigh station or actually in it to be going slower than the posted limit. These weigh in motion systems are designed and calibrated to be accurate in a narrow range of speed. If one goes to fast or too slow or does not maintain the proper distance it can trigger a truck to enter the station or be directed to the static scales.

As a CVIU (Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit) staff member from New Zealand it was great to watch this and see how things are done in the USA. Awesome attitude and one I pride myself in as well. Treat them like you want to be treated.

In my nearly 30 years of regional trucking, I have met more good honest law enforcement people than bad ones. Dennis is a good egg as they say.
I drove for 3½ years and always noticed that Florida weigh stations were the quickest to get through, especially if you're running 100% legal and have no worries anyway.
What a man, a genuine and unmistakably honest and humble human being with disarming personality and unadulterated integrity! It is easy to feel his true nature from the way he tells and says the truth. Thank you for your service. The world needs more of you!!

But Mr Hegman, as a driver from Melbourne, Australia, I loved and respect your attitude.
You don't seem confrontational to the public, you try to help within the rules you have, and your policy of giving the benefit of doubt to drivers is amazing.
Same thing here in Australia, cars and trucks might pass the rules in 1 state only to get busted in the next.
I.E. car trailer lengths are measured from different spots per state, tow ball weight is also measured different.

But I found it extremely informative; the officer extremely knowledgeable, empathetic, and professional; the technology is interesting; even the music was well done. I actually had a cattle hauler in here a few years ago, I'll never forget him because he always had a joke when he came in here. He was 600 lbs overweight. He came in and I told him that he was 600 lbs overweight. He said thats because I have my wife with me. I said "your wife weighs 600 lbs lbs?" He said No, "but all that crap she brings with her does... "

I noticed no one has left a comment about this video in 2 years. Well, I loved the video. It has educated me and I have been an Escort/Pilot car driver for more than 23 years. It sure is nice to have a better understanding of what happens in a scale house. And Mr. Hegman is is a super up standing man. I hope he is proud of his service to his state. He should be. I would like to see you do a video in reference to Pilot cars and Florida laws since we work with trucks every day. Thank you for making this video.

I'm sort of a new driver. Few months under my belt. My first couple of days I passed two scales when I shouldn't have because I didn't know they were coming up. Both right after the entrance ramp I used. I guess I got lucky 'cause no one chased me down. Now, I have a GPS that tells me where the scales are and I've been getting red lighted on every one the past two weeks. I know I've been pushing 80k lately but our loads are automated and I doubt I'll ever be over. I still don't know much about what I'm supposed to be doing when I pull in but this video helps a ton. I've been slowing to 15-20mph. Didn't know that was bad but I'm still getting used to running full speed on the interstate. Much less in tight spaces like a weigh station.
The speed totally depends on the state you're in. Florida wants 45 (though I've always had bad luck at exactly 45, 42 ish seems to more reliably get me a bypass signal). Just follow the signs and you'll be fine. Hit me up on G+ if you ever need a hand, I'm always happy to help.

this inspector is very reasonable i can see why he had a job for so long .they need more men like him.

I lived in Florida awhile , now in Colorado. In my experience and efforts as Class A (hazmat / tanker) also in Canada, it was my practice to have all paperwork in order , even simply to highlight expiration dates , key points on manifests ect. for times you do get the famous " pull left , bring in CDL & permits" will make the DOT officer's life easier and in return they gave me courteous respect back.
It's no inconvenience for us to have a beautifully organized binder with tabbed and laminated dividers for quick efficient reference for any party whether it's slip seat , DOT , carriers and yourself.
One of my pet-pevs was getting in other tractors on a daily or weekly basis to find a mess of old expired paperwork. That shit I'd throw right in the trash can and if something was missing get a brand new up to date copy. These practices fall in line with all the new technology and advances in the trucking industry. Hell- we don't even need paperwork to board a plane these day's , whip out that cell phone and scan our boarding pass digital format lol !
My point is , I love all the passion how people customize their trucks and help make trucking careers more attractive. With older generations retiring and us younger generations coming into this industry, I don't see a lone wolf gypsy life on the open road anymore. With technology we have today, you can be evermore connected 24/7 - 365 days a year , from almost anywhere in the world ( WifI , Skype , FB , TH-cam , internet and mobile data plans ) ect... and seeing this video opened my eyes to the insight from
FDOT Weight Inspector Dennis Hegman's perspective and I'm sure many other DOT station's we may visit.

True having things in order and easy to find makes DOT look at u more favorably. IME don't give them anything other then what they ask for, don't give them a chance to find something they not originally looking for
I hear you Keep the dash board clean truck inside and out clean. Yourself clean as much as you can. Paper work straight amazing how quick you get through stuff. I even kept all the truck and trailer paper work in a small 3 ring binder in plastic sleeves so all they had to do was flip the pages and if they needed to make a copy of anything they could take the sleeve out copy and put it right back with out fighting it. Its amazing how just these little things making getting through inspections so much easier and stuff you know damn right they could right you up on that is minor they let you go with a verbal warning to get it dealt with.

What actually occurs at these weight stations have always been a mystery to me. While I understood the basic concept and necessity, I had no idea how technical and precise they were.
Every once in awhile I come across a truly informative/educational video. I would definitely give this one straight A+++!

Im a third generation Driver and I have heard horror stories about that place. The only time I had to go through it I got bypassed because they had a huge line out onto the highway and had to bypass all the trucks. I got lucky.
+countryrebel22 I am based out of Wyoming and run mostly south anymore. I use to run California a lot and just flat out wouldn't take a load that would run me through Banning.

im not a trucker, but the one thing hit me is Every states have different law regarding on commercial vehicle which is B.S to me, if a commercial aircraft can comply within FAA reg. or DOT reg if your are in canada they can fly any where. what i mean is commercial truck should same regulation from north to south, east to west or vise versa. its seems they dont really care about SAFETY its more making money

I have a CDL although I only run my trucks for personal reasons. Federal law exempts personal use from the FMC / DOT regulations but state regulations vary. I'm always nervous pulling into scales you never know what they throw at you :( That being said so far I've always been treated courteously never actually had a ticket.
Bypassing the scales is one of those examples. For instance in new mexico even at the same scale house some folks told me the scales are only for commercial vehicles others said all trucks need to come in.
Another example is the time cards/medical. Some states require them even on personal vehicles over a certain weight.
In Florida its All Trucks come in. We dont know if your in commerce or not.

This is one of the best if not only the best videos I have watched when it comes to DOT weight scale inspections. Thank you. My friend came in over weight at 15 lbs and was written up by CHP. I was there with him when he got written up. Those extra 15 lbs was water for the road.
What an amazing video. Had no idea how sophisticated the technology was. So many questions have been answered about what all those hwy poles mean and do.

This person explained everything in such a clear way it's amazing.
You can tell this guy probably makes a wonderful parent and a mentor as well. I wish there were more people like this in this world. Reminds me of my driving instructor. Gives you a bit of room to make mistakes but nothing too severe and is encouraging and lifts you up when you make a mistake and beat yourself up over it.

Great video. After 22 years I bet he has a lot of stories to tell. You probably couldn't have chosen a better inspector to interview. I'm not a trucker but I have truckers that work for me. I have a greater appreciation for truckers and enforcement officers now after watching this video. The loads and goods have to be delivered but our roads and bridges are getting older and more congested. It's a balancing act for all of us. Great video - keep up the BigRig series.

I have been an owner/operator for 40 years. This is the best, most interesting video on trucking law enforcement I have ever seen. Mainly because of Senior Inspector Hegman; nothing but respect for that officer. I only hope he is training a lot of people to do the job exactly as he does it. Thank you for your service, sir!

I have a whole new respect for DOT inspectors after watching this. Theres a bad apple in every profession, thats just life. But people like this gentleman are awesome. Treat eachother with respect.

Most of their scales are sold to industrial operations, like food plants, fertilizer plants, etc, etc. Some cost $1/4 million or even more. They have been around forever.
I've been working as a Weight Inspector at the I-4 Weight Scales in the Tampa area for the past 5 and half years. I had worked as a Videographer / Editor in broadcast TV doing News and then Commercial and Program Production for over 37 years prior to this job. I also am doing audio/video production work on my own for various things on the side. This is very well done, and accurate. I really like how the interview with the Inspector was done. Really nice work.
Your video is very informative, we need more DOT officers like you in North America. I drove for almost 10 years and didn’t have any problems with any DOT officials. I’m enjoying this video

Every scale master that I have met, has always been more than willing to answer any questions, and It's always fun to get their take on the side of things.

Very good video, Mr. Hegman seems to be a genuine real-deal spokesman for the FL DOT. I would like to see a sequel to this video that focuses on safety. A weigh station's function is more than just weight. Such as tires, brakes, air leaks, hours of service and much more.
This almost makes me wanna stop and shake his hand next time I come through. I tip my hat to you weight master!
