Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Check your state about license requirements. Weigh of the vehicle dictates the type of license you need in some states.

Below 26,000lbs and below is Class C. Anything above requires a CDL if commercial hauling. You can get away as a home owner with a Class C as long as in your state. If you leave and above 26k youll need a CDL.. Its a pain in the ass...

    • @ShaneBurrell1
      @ShaneBurrell1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Several states have special non-CDL license types or endorsements. In NC I have a Class A Normal license which allows me to drive whatever I want non-commercial non-hazmat. I did a video on it a while back. TX and PA are similar to NC. CA is more restrictive. Check your state!

Im confused. Did the trooper just say you can buy a semi privately and dont need a cdl to drive it, as long as its not for commercial use? If im not mistaken, weigh scales are federal? So this would mean you can privately buy and drive a semi without a cdl in any state? Am i understanding this correctly? Because if so, thats awesome. I never knew.

Every state is different when it comes to DOT compliance. As far as I am concerned the person who only tows occasionally is much more likely to overlook a safety issue than a professional driver. Every commercial driver is required to do daily inspections on truck and trailer. Take a look at the federal motor carrier safety administration's website if you want to be overwhelmed with regulations.

Well you should be afraid because you still can be stopped and not to leave until you get your load the white right weight in a second of all even equipment with a regular trailer you can stop and be overloaded so when you even with your lawn mower and your other equipment try and figure out what flea what you waive so you won't be overweight and make sure all your equipment is right because you can be stopped by hey come Marshall highway patrol or. And still be set on side the road until you get everything fixed and ticketed and it could be a big ticket to so be safe take care of you to lose because I have the money maker and they will take care of you good luck everybody and be careful

I tow a 15,000 lb + trailer for work everyday with my F250 during the summer. What I never understood was that I technically need a chauffeur's or CDL licence and have to stop at the scales and get a DOT physical every 2 years and get my truck inspected every year. But a guy who just retired from a factory or office job with no truck driving experience can go out and buy a F350 and a 40ft fifth wheel trailer (and some even tow a boat behind the camper) or a big ol motorhome and they don't need a physical or pass a driving test. I see 80+ year old guys driving huge motorhomes down the highway all the time who look like they could croak at any moment these guys should have to follow the same laws as commercial drivers. They are no better than anyone else what a joke.

A few years ago I was hassled by DOT a few times for just pulling lawn mowers around. Had to get dot numbers and all the BS that goes with it. They were enforcing trucks down to 10,000 gvw which was nonsense really. Thankfully, it wasn't a profitable venture for them and they wound up laying off half of the officers and raised cut off back up to 26,000 gvw last I heard.

I was told when I stopped at the ag inspection station on I-75 entering Florida that even if my trailer is empty I have to stop.

There’s one thing that the DOT Officer left out. 1st of all if you have a pre-pass system you don’t always have to stop @ a Weigh Station. 2nd of all the only time you’ll ever need to stop is if your truck & trailer are fully overweight in which case make sure that you have the proper papers in the cab that state that you can haul things that are over weight (called over weight permits). Also if you haul a reefer unit or dry van make sure that your trailer tandems are set so that your truck & trailer are not over weight. Also Most DOT Officers don’t want to take the time to give you a problem, so don’t go looking for a reason to get them to put you out of service. Company’s will be given points if their trucks are shutdown for any reason. Make 100% sure that you inspect your truck & if needed stop @ a truck stop & double check your weight especially before a Weigh Station because you’ll have burned up a lot of fuel by the time you get there & your weight might change.

I actually like them if you go back to the days when I started driving a truck I'm 70 now and those days you didn't have the two seats no radio I know a lot of things you would have holes in the floor which it would stop frags in in the winter time to keep a little bit warmer if the heater worked no power steering !! !! trucks weren't maintained like today you had a protector your own ass ,, when you work for a company and made sure you were safe yourself ! those were those days I went through that it was bad and adventurous at the same time.. today they're like driving a Cadillac .. you can't imagine . Just try imagine that it's like a Model T versus a modern-day Cadillac that is the difference ..we didn't have air ride seats. ! we didn't have spring seats. ,I remember when I had a
B model Mack and run her.
( OLD BETTS ) like old Betsy that was her name good truck two shifters gas engine very very slow across country. Back in those days you had a bench seat,, every time you hit a pothole went through your spine..
the weigh stations protect us the protect you I do not fear them ! sometimes they're not on a reasonable,, but most of the time they're just doing their job and good people !
    D.O.T. inspections I don't fear THEM
in my day. I was glad they're there .co. would not fix them ,,
thank God for DOT.. anyway that's my experience.

Look, listen, smell and touch. Do your pre-trip in an orderly fashion so you don’t miss anything. The things you miss are the things that will cause issues. If you get interrupted while doing a pre-trip go back a few steps and start over. Weeping rust streaks are a tell tale sign of something loose ie lugnuts. Use a grease stick to Mark an area that needs to be looked at better or a repair needs to be made.

What is a "truck"? Well, was is a taxi? Any vehicle, such as a sedan, a minivan, can be used as a taxi. A taxi is a commercial vehicle. So, a "pick up", if not used for commercial purposes, is not a "truck". Any vehicle can be used as a "truck". There is an old school loophole, by painting or using stenciled lettering, a notice on the door "Not For Hire", and so the vehicle is a marked vessel. You don't need a "TRUCK" plate for a pick up. If you do get a truck plate, you are screwed.

They are basing it on the federal definition of what is a commercial vehicle.
The definition of a commercial motor vehicle or a CMV is a vehicle that is designed to carry cargo or payload that has a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10000 pounds.
As he stated in some States there is verbage on the sign outside the scale. Some States say no vehicles under 26000 pounds combined. Other States say no pick up trucks. Then it becomes a little technical. Basically you need to at that point know what the definition in your state is for a pick up truck.
Then it becomes even worse. Texas for example will say in their laws while involved in Commerce. Other States will say while operating a commercial vehicle. So the difference would be if you register your pick up truck commercially you are still operating a commercial vehicle regardless of use. While other States would only apply while you are actually working. I own and operate businesses in 3 different States. You have to dig deep into the details and become familiar. Many assume that if you read the federal regulations you're covered. This is far from the truth.

My 60 year old father can tow his 40 ft camper with no dot physical but I'm 28 and I need one to pull two lawn mowers kinda doesn't make sense New York dot is a money grab

He is incorrect your personal drivers license Is only good for 26,000 lbs GVWR and it states that on it. Next take a 3/4 truck rated at 11,000lb GVWR plus a trailer rated at 17,000lb GVWR the total is 28,000 LB plated and you are required to have a CDL to even pull the two together empty. because you can only operate up to 26,000lb plated vehicles in any combination by law because that's all your licensed for. So his winning the lotter and operating a Semi truck with a GVWR of 53,200 lbs. is Illegal. Just go's to show how they discriminate against truck drivers period. Not like he didn't admit that they do in his conversation. It doesn't mean he has to have apported plates etc. it can be tagged as an RV but can not be operated without a CDL.

Good video! It was really cool of Trooper Hoover to take the time to do the video with you. Be aware of variations in state laws. For example, in California (as of 15ish years ago when I last researched it), driver's license requirements are based on the kind of vehicle, not just the use. A California driver would need a class C CDL to haul Christy around recreationally in that Freightliner tractor-trailer, or a class B CDL to haul her recreationally in most 3 or more axle trucks. I don't know how CA law would apply to an out of state driver hauling Christy recreationally through CA, though.

  • @wildbill23c

    Great video as always.
If for example you were hauling that UTV to a jobsite, it would be considered commercial because it wasn't going to your house? Even if its your personal truck and your personal UTV? As in your buddy calls from the jobsite and says hey could you bring your UTV over with the rotary broom on it so we can use it to clean off the driveway of this house we are working on? That's considered a commercial use even though its your personal UTV?
Wait a minute, this officer is saying if I went over to the semi-truck dealer and bought a truck and trailer combination I'd be free to drive it all I wanted as long as I never used it for any commercial purpose...as in I could use it to travel the country and never need a CDL? I always thought those trucks were CDL required due to their size/weight regardless of being used in a commercial setting or not? So in effect I could go buy one and learn to drive it and never need a CDL or learner's permit?
Could you ask Trooper Hoover to talk about that in further detail, I suspect there's a lot more to that though? Thank you.

Tim, their is differences between a weight test and an inspection. My son in law drove our Kenworth W900L into a weigh station and asked for a Class I inspection. Apparently they go over the truck with a fine tooth comb. The inspector was upset; the only thing he could find was a fire extinguisher that was not fastened down - so he was sighted. He turned to the inspector and offered him his hand. The inspector was a little shocked. But my son in law explained that this particular weigh station had a reputation for being really tough, he had had the truck about three months, went over it from bumper to bumper fixing things and this inspection confirmed his view that he had missed nothing of significance. He keeps a very detailed maintenance log book - what he did, what he needs to do and when and what he would do with some play money.

I don't know how Indiana does there plating and registration. When I was otr I always ran under DOT numbers and apportioned plates gross weight #80,000. Illinois has so many different license plate classifications it's ridiculous. At a class d plate and above you are required to have your truck safety inspected every 6 months. Trailers are included somewhere in that mess( I think it goes by weight). If you have DOT numbers then it is only a once a year inspection . Cdl or not in Illinois you have to have the appropriate registered weight classification for single and combination. vehicles. Further more Illinois has bridge laws, weight limits, and different classifications on roads. All very confusing to drivers and officers. Knowledge is power .
