Thanks much for wonderful coverage, both joy and sadness. Powerful to hear sailors empathize their teams and the importance of all the support they receive. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you so much, Mark, to keep us so well informed about the Vendée Globe - and this every single day!! That's really great! And I appreciate a lot your empathic perspective at the different situations!
How do you do it, dear Mark, so early and already your clear and concise update? Am grateful each day and appreciate it always. Sending warm regards from Germany.
@@utenorman1283 had to do it early today as am currently on a train to London for a meeting, and I don't think the other passengers would appreciate me recording a voiceover on the train!
I wonder if you and Gladwell have done a retrospective review of actual course sailed vs. predict winds prediction. As the sailors have choices and actual 'polars' performance do impact the performance, this comparison would be fascinating to see. Just a thought. I am still gutted about the event experienced by Pip Hare, can you mention next time her plan and progress?
@@thorntontarr2894 it's been pretty close, but yes, the actual polars make a real difference. Even the two leaders sail very different downwind VMG angles at times.
I thought the same, it would be interesting to overlay predictions to actual outcome, I don't think, the predictions for the wind match reality past 6 hours.
The leader chart with photos of the sailors is very helpful! Although I now recognize the characters from the reports from their boats, I can never figure out who is who. Thanks!
Thanks for the great coverage. Clarisse Cremer has a mainsail problem? Might be the attachment point at the head of the sail. I hope she can fix it without too much delay. Bon courage Clarisse xxx
Good report as usual...but though you did notice instant speed of Dalin being 2 knots faster than Richomme, you overlooked the incredible speed of Seb Simon, actually faster than the first two...with a "single" foil boat !! There could be more changes at top of the race soon...😃
We saw that coming for a couple of days. I think Charlie feels better in second position, to put pressure on Yoann. I guess he will now try to stay within a 0 to 100 nm distance...
@@Tendance-Inox Richomme is very quick downwind in breeze, but I believe Dalin has a more all round boat, so I think we'll see the lead switch back and forth over the coming days (and probably weeks). It's exciting!
Exhilarating, fast paced yet agonizingly slower way around the globe, with 2 sailors battling the elements, leading the race, only few miles apart after traveling half way around the world! Wow!
Basically take any spar (like spinnaker boom, main boom, piece of mast) and hoist it, use lines/ropes as shrouds. Then a small sail, typically storm jib is set in front of the new "mast", hanked on the shroud.
@@ImpossibleSolution-k6w I'm hoping to see more of the jury rig in Pip's next update, where I'll be able to talk what she's done. It will be using a spar, maybe a outrigger, as a mast, then hoisting a sail ahead of that. As @sailawayteam says, usually a storm jib.
I enjoy your updates but that fake bbc-news ish background is not kidding anyone. You would be better off having a real background with a screen showing the live tracking or similar. Sorry (not sorry) for the critique of the use of a green screen

Brilliant summary, without the bs. Ta. Out of the race?, you went large. Respect. The guys on the water makes Grand Prix look like phewphew.😂
Thank you! It's gutting to see how sailors can be suddenly out of the race in an instant, after they put in so much preparation to be there.

Could you explain a bit more what a jury rig is and how Pip Hare can travel 700M without a mast to those of us not from the sailing world?

Fairly ironic hearing him say he sails “safely”. Nobody in the Vendee Globe is sailing “safely,” pretty much by definition.
These things are relative, I guess.
Yoann #1
Courage😢
The big question, for me, is why did Charlie go North of Auckland Island? I can see no reason for it and IMO it has cost him a lot of miles.
Less waves for a while, perhaps for repairs or getting some more sleep?
Another casualty unfortunately. Safe sailing to an appropriate harbor for repairs.
Does Charlie D have a problem that is reducing his speed?
@@chrisedwards2539 I don't think so. Richomme's boat is known to be quick downwind in breeze.
