Quentin Tarantino was so pissed at the Academy because he knew if he won Best Original Screenplay then he wasn't gonna win Best Picture. Even though everybody knows Pulp Fiction deserved to win Best Picture that year.
That doesn't make a lot of sense. If he LOST best original screenplay, then he'd have a reason to think he won't win the top prize. But winning should give a boost of confidence if anything. Look at the history of the screenplay wins. Usually it's one of the two screenplay wins that wins best picture in the end. Look at Birdman, for example
+HenryAND Thomas Usually a bold, original film such as Pulp Fiction is given Original Screenplay as sort of a "consolation prize", that way they can give the brave, acclaimed film an Oscar but give a "safer" pick Best Picture (such as Forrest Gump that year, which is a vastly inferior film to Pulp Fiction). Birdman is a rare exception.
+Thomas Broome-Jones PF was funny with great dialogues, great cast and nice screenplay. Forrest Gump was heart touching. Both great movies and I don't agree that FG is vastly inferior.
***** A Tarantino film will never win Best Picture. Pulp Fiction was his best shot because of how groundbreaking it was at the time. Everyone's so used to his style now that the novelty's worn off.
When the presenter, Anthony Hopkins, said the winners were Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, television screens went black for a moment, which Avary says was payback for pranks Tarantino had played on him in the past. “I paid off a cameraman 500 bucks to have the camera turned off on Quentin when they announced the award,” claims Avary. “So if you watch it online, you’ll see it cuts to black briefly, and then they cut to me. Gotcha.”
Everyone has opinions like that. I don't like Frozen, or Ferris Bueller's Day Off, or The Lion King, or The Matrix. I try not to annoy people who do, though.
My point is that everyone has movies they think are overrated, and there's no need to emphasize that opinion in a place full of people who do like it. It creates unnecessary conflict. Case and point, this conversation. I don't give a damn if you don't like it. But why mention that in a place full of people who do. There are plenty of other places to argue your opinion. Why here?
This is about the movie winning an _Oscar_. There are other videos about Pulp Fiction for you to bitch and moan. Might I suggest an interview, or a trailer?
I've had enough. You win the argument. All I wanted to say was that maybe this isn't the best place for negativity, but you refuse to be rational and there are much better arguments I could be having. Goodbye, and I hope you're able to find the video where Heath Ledger won BSA. There isn't enough needless hate there, and I think you're just right for the job. Thanks, and piss off.

It’s really interesting to go back and watch these older ceremonies. To think where a lot of these guys would end up in the industry. There is also a very interesting story lying underneath of this Oscar win. Both Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary actually had beef with each other at this time. There was a huge feud over Avary’s credit on the film. Since he had helped come up with the stories, he wanted a co-writer credit, but Tarantino wanted sole credit for the screenplay. When the film was being developed for release, that is when the feud started. In the end, it was negotiated for Avary to get a story by credit. Avary was not happy about it. It actually led to the two of them having a falling out which was certainly beginning at the time they won this award and would be fully established in the time that followed.
The thing I love most is the Tarantino film in every category when going through the nominations always, ALWAYS, gets the loudest cheer, how has Tarantino never won best director?
He really only deserved Best Director for Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards. He is a good director, but a far better writer. I would say the same of Woody Allen, who was also nominated for Bullets Over Broadway that year.
So deserved, you two! All of that man's screenplays are masterpieces in themselves. And now give that man a bloody Oscar for directing, people! He's only gonna make one more final film. It can't be this hard to appreciate his director's work after all those contributions to the world of film.
