Keith That adapter is a spindle adapter, I have a #7mt to #4 mt, the reason it's short is lathe spindles have short tapers to allow to maximize the through hole. The shop is looking good I know your itching to get it done and everything moved in.

Keith:That Taper sleeve is for the headstock of a lathe. When turning between centers there is a driving plate that attaches to the spindle but the front bore of the spindle on some lathes is tapered, the inside taper of the bushing is the same size as that of the tailstock. My father bought a new Clausing in 1956 and it had the same part. Also the center for the headstock was soft so it could be turned to make it dead on center. Thanks for the update on your shop.

Hello Keith, As usual an interesting Odds&Ends with lots of new things and also very nice how much people send to you. But the most interesting are the shop updates and it start to look more and more like a real shop. Hopefully the metal for the roof arrives soon and before the rain and storms. Here in the Netherlands we had also last days a bit stormy weather with much rain but now the weather turns cold again. Cold but sunny so hopefully it turns also sunny at your place. Nice! Thanks for the update. You reminded me that back in primary school the windows were at the top of the classroom. They latched with a ring-type lever handle. Teachers in each class had a long aluminum pole with a hook, with which they could open and close the windows.

Great tools there Keith. You probably need to make a new tapered pin for the dividing head so all plates are usable without changing it every time you use a different type of plate. With the tapered pin the plates should locate better than with a parallel pin. The workshop is coming on great and it will be good to have a roof to work under.. The weather has got the better of every body every where this year so far. Here in the UK we have a very early spring with high winds and storms. Some plants are in flower which should not be showing yet. Looking forward to more updates soon. regards from the UK

Keith, That No. 5 to No.3 Morse adapter is intended for use in a lathe spindle with a dead center. Very often a large dead center is cumbersome and also quite expensive. In my experience that would have been used in a lathe with a No. 5 spindle and a No. 3 tail stock so you would only need one size of center, one live and one dead for the machine. All the best! Mike

Hi Keith thanks for the videos. If I could humbly make one suggestion on your new shop that would be to DOUBLE the number of electrical outlets you have and make the 120 volt outlets 20 amp (these are a slightly different looking outlet to the common 15 amp ones but the costs are about the same (so is the price of the breakers). Also I would suggest to add 240 volt 15 (or 20) amp, 30 amp and a few 50 amp outlets (50 for welders). It is soooo cheap to put them in now compared to adding later. In my 24 x 48 shop I have outlets on average every three feet and am really pleased with them. Also what I did was to put a GFCI as the first outlet on each circuit and leapfrogged the outlets down the wall. Thanks again Rod
+Newmachinist Well, we are thinking more or less along the same lines. Each of the wall outlets will have two 20 amp receptacles (total of four plugs) and are about every 10 feet on the wall. I will probably only put a 220 outlet where I will put my welder as nearly all of my machines are three phase and I will have to do some additional wiring to handle that.
In Poland at 49°25′N 20°20′E and 1350 ft above SL we got a lot of days with a temperature of 150°F last summer, measuring 18 ft UNDER the simple tin roof with silvery paint on it, the metal itself was too hot to touch, so I think that isolating your roof down south in Georgia is a must - and it will help in dimming the noise of wind, rain and hail too.I envy you - my shop is just 6x4 ft!
Keith, The first "Mystery Part" is a change gear rack for an Atlas lathe. I've been in the process of making a new one for the lathe my Dad handed down to me. The original was broken several times over and cobbled back together over the years since 1963 when he bought it. We made a rough new one out of aluminum in the late 80's. Hey Keith, I know finding a proper home for those spare parts will be ideal, but in case you don't I am cobbling together a "dividing head" out of spare parts. Old section of lead screw, a headstock and spindle, various gears, etc. and could use a banjo and a lever...heck all of them would likely find a home on my "Franken-head", so if you don't find a home for them I'd be more than happy to pay you for them...or make a trade of some sort. At 6:53, all of those parts came off of an Atlas lathe. I have an Atlas and immediately recognized them. You can look up the parts catalog page on the internet (maybe even on vintage machinery!) to see exactly what each part is.

Keith, all those lathe parts are for Atlas lathes, looks like both 10" and 12". The banjo is for a 10" without the quick change gears and is what's on my lathe. The brass nut is the cross feed nut. I'm looks like someone modified it to include a zero backlash adjuster. Thanks, John

I've ran across a few of your videos recently and just figured what the heck, I'll subscribe so I can watch more. Thanks for the great down to earth videos. Love your new shop I'd love to have something like that. I've got a 24' x 36' barn with a very uneven dirt floor, interior isn't finished so its darn near impossible to heat so I get nothing done during the winter...so from about October to March the shop doesn't get any use :(.
Keith, You shop is coming along nicely. When it's completed and before you move the machines in, you'll have to have an old fashioned barn dance! ... Why is it that when you need something and get it, the item shows up at a better deal. I know we've misplaced things around the house and torn the place apart trying to fine them. Buy another and they are sure to turn up! Thanks for another look at your goodies and the shop progress. Are you going with fluorescent lighting or low wattage metal halide? The metal halide lights take about 5 or so minutes to warm up, but they put out a ton of high-intensity white light. Have a good one! Dave
Keith, I know, unlike the US Gov., you have budgetary constraints.So just a word to the wise, don't short yourself on lighting. I know you are still young (did I do good?) however, as we age our eyes seem to get less light sensitive. In my 1200 sqft shop I have ~ 150 sqft of windows, 30 4' T-8 2 tube fixtures plus assorted task lights, and the walls painted with white semi gloss enamel and still not too much light. Also, have you thought about running a loop of airline around the perimeter to facilitate putting in drops when and where you want them? Just a couple of things to think about. Looking good, Rollie
+Rollie Kelly I plan to put plenty of light in the shop. I like light! I will also at some point be putting in an airline like you suggest, but it might not be right away - I have to pay for things a little bit at a time!
Not enough electrical outlets. I put mine every 4 ft. and am hoping to install more circuits to make them every 2 ft.. My drills, grinders and etc. plus the electricity eaters stationed along the walls need many places to eat juice. Also am planning on installing some posts outside with weather proof boxes as I am tired of stringing extension cords to work outside the shop doors.
+Big'un44 I have four outlets every 10 feet. With most of my machinery being three phase (which will require separate outlets), I think I will be fine.

I would agree that the lathe parts are from an Atlas/Craftsman 10 or 12 inch lathe. I have the same but my banjo looks like someone brazed it up 2 or 3 times.
Kieth, on your shop, I'd recommend getting as big of a VFD you get (10hp+) and run three phase. We ran 1hp three phase around our shop and it's great. Do be afraid of VFDs just because they are modern. They are better than rotary phase converters in pretty much every way.
+justfakeit888 I already have a rotary phase converter and that is what I will use to power the new shop. I also have a couple of individual machines that use a VFD, but mostly for variable speed.
I will admit, much to my embarrassment, that I have used a dull expanding reamer as a quick and dirty expanding mandrel in an emergency. just made the cuts super light in the lathe. not recommended, but in a pinch, it works.

Hi Keith, I have a 14x40 mazak mate lathe that has a D1-5 spindle and it takes a spindle adapter just like that mt 5 to mt 3 adapter you showed. I have found a few on ebay for around $40-$50 but I haven't pulled the trigger yet lol... I need to find a D1-5 lathe dog driver plate first or a face plate but D1-5 stuff is pricey.... The new shop is looking good!

is there enough spare corners for each of your viewers? lol its gonna be lots of fun wiring, moving in equipment and hanging up tools. update on my small drill press - chuck arrived and luckily i was right it was jacobs taper 6! (there was doubt that it could be B18 short, and as i could not find one, i took a chance on jt6) and new belt has arrived that fits just fine, it is now in pieces to be cleaned as it is so greasy and stuck sawdust you can barely see it, i wont be going so far as repaint, but removing rust from all the bare column etc, it runs smooth and quiet so bearings are all fine. from the paint still on the pulleys i genuinely dont think it has much run time, just the bad orig chuck and possibly the wrong belt (old belt was too loose at the end of adjustment (pulleys hit cover) , belt was worn which makes no sense) made it practically unusable, thus been on a workshop floor for 25 or more years.
All the TH-cam machinists seem like they've got a "shop cat" so it looks like you're going that way too. As a matter of fact I've got one that stays in our shop and he's pretty interested in whatever I'm doing in there. Thanks for the show.

A South Georgia swamp panther :) Ours- Lucy- is a standard issue house cat. Mom called her a miniature black leopard. One of my neighbors has one that just sorta hangs around- we all call her the spare cat. Planning on staining the inside once the roof is on?

The first "Mystery Part" is a change gear rack for an Atlas lathe. I've been in the process of making a new one for the lathe my Dad handed down to me. The original was broken several times over and cobbled back together over the years since 1963 when he bought it. We made a rough new one out of aluminum in the late 80's. I'm interested, let me know...

Hey Keith, I know finding a proper home for those spare parts will be ideal, but in case you don't I am cobbling together a "dividing head" out of spare parts. Old section of lead screw, a headstock and spindle, various gears, etc. and could use a banjo and a lever...heck all of them would likely find a home on my "Franken-head", so if you don't find a home for them I'd be more than happy to pay you for them...or make a trade of some sort.

At 6:53, all of those parts came off of an Atlas lathe. I have an Atlas and immediately recognized them. You can look up the parts catalog page on the internet (maybe even on vintage machinery!) to see exactly what each part is.

Keith, all those lathe parts are for Atlas lathes, looks like both 10" and 12". The banjo is for a 10" without the quick change gears and is what's on my lathe. The brass nut is the cross feed nut. I'm looks like someone modified it to include a zero backlash adjuster.

I've ran across a few of your videos recently and just figured what the heck, I'll subscribe so I can watch more. Thanks for the great down to earth videos. Love your new shop I'd love to have something like that. I've got a 24' x 36' barn with a very uneven dirt floor, interior isn't finished so its darn near impossible to heat so I get nothing done during the winter...so from about October to March the shop doesn't get any use :(.

You shop is coming along nicely. When it's completed and before you move the machines in, you'll have to have an old fashioned barn dance! ... Why is it that when you need something and get it, the item shows up at a better deal. I know we've misplaced things around the house and torn the place apart trying to fine them. Buy another and they are sure to turn up! Thanks for another look at your goodies and the shop progress. Are you going with fluorescent lighting or low wattage metal halide? The metal halide lights take about 5 or so minutes to warm up, but they put out a ton of high-intensity white light.

Keith, I know, unlike the US Gov., you have budgetary constraints.So just a word to the wise, don't short yourself on lighting. I know you are still young (did I do good?) however, as we age our eyes seem to get less light sensitive. In my 1200 sqft shop I have ~ 150 sqft of windows, 30 4' T-8 2 tube fixtures plus assorted task lights, and the walls painted with white semi gloss enamel and still not too much light.
Also, have you thought about running a loop of airline around the perimeter to facilitate putting in drops when and where you want them?

+Rollie Kelly I plan to put plenty of light in the shop. I like light! I will also at some point be putting in an airline like you suggest, but it might not be right away - I have to pay for things a little bit at a time!
Not enough electrical outlets. I put mine every 4 ft. and am hoping to install more circuits to make them every 2 ft.. My drills, grinders and etc. plus the electricity eaters stationed along the walls need many places to eat juice. Also am planning on installing some posts outside with weather proof boxes as I am tired of stringing extension cords to work outside the shop doors.
+Big'un44 I have four outlets every 10 feet. With most of my machinery being three phase (which will require separate outlets), I think I will be fine.

Kieth, on your shop, I'd recommend getting as big of a VFD you get (10hp+) and run three phase. We ran 1hp three phase around our shop and it's great. Do be afraid of VFDs just because they are modern. They are better than rotary phase converters in pretty much every way.
+justfakeit888 I already have a rotary phase converter and that is what I will use to power the new shop. I also have a couple of individual machines that use a VFD, but mostly for variable speed.
I will admit, much to my embarrassment, that I have used a dull expanding reamer as a quick and dirty expanding mandrel in an emergency. just made the cuts super light in the lathe. not recommended, but in a pinch, it works.

Hi Keith, I have a 14x40 mazak mate lathe that has a D1-5 spindle and it takes a spindle adapter just like that mt 5 to mt 3 adapter you showed. I have found a few on ebay for around $40-$50 but I haven't pulled the trigger yet lol... I need to find a D1-5 lathe dog driver plate first or a face plate but D1-5 stuff is pricey....

is there enough spare corners for each of your viewers? lol its gonna be lots of fun wiring, moving in equipment and hanging up tools. update on my small drill press - chuck arrived and luckily i was right it was jacobs taper 6! (there was doubt that it could be B18 short, and as i could not find one, i took a chance on jt6) and new belt has arrived that fits just fine, it is now in pieces to be cleaned as it is so greasy and stuck sawdust you can barely see it, i wont be going so far as repaint, but removing rust from all the bare column etc, it runs smooth and quiet so bearings are all fine. from the paint still on the pulleys i genuinely dont think it has much run time, just the bad orig chuck and possibly the wrong belt (old belt was too loose at the end of adjustment (pulleys hit cover) , belt was worn which makes no sense) made it practically unusable, thus been on a workshop floor for 25 or more years.

A South Georgia swamp panther :) Ours- Lucy- is a standard issue house cat. Mom called her a miniature black leopard. One of my neighbors has one that just sorta hangs around- we all call her the spare cat.

That copper/brass looking part of the "unknown" parts looks to be a ground clamp to a grounding rod... might be wrong however
+Tirgal I think it is a half nut or something similar for a lathe. The inside is threaded to fit a lead screw.
