I love how Matt never tries to force his opinions upon us ... Some TH-camrs even Title their videos things like ' What to do, and not to do ' or ' The right way to do ... ' or even things like ' If you do this you are WRONG. ' ... Matt just says ' This is what I do, but you do you ...' And I love it
The thing I really love about your channel Matt, is that you're never scared of showing the more mundane fishkeeping tasks. It's important that you get a bit mucky now and then. I use a bucket for water changes too.
I wish we could replace our stubborn neighbor with Matty!! I would show up nightly with ales and a snack just to listen to his lessons! What a good fellow 🍻
I wouldn't mind a once every two to three weeks 'Maintenance with Matt' video. This video was very interesting and motivating to watch. Love all the small talk you get into when just talking about your scapes and fish. Like we're there with you in the fish room! My favorite is the Rumy nose tank. Looks so natural! Keep up the food work!
Very therapeutic, just finished my fishroom maintenance, then sat down with a coffee to watch this. I use a bucket too, x10 but I use a plastic jug to transfer the water to the tank, takes longer but that way I’m not going to drown the electrics.
Nah, I use a hose, well actually two hoses. One for syphoning the gravel and one with a strain for filling the aquariums. I connect the fill-up hose to the shower and adjust to the correct temperature.
I've been in the hobby for a while but that filling the siphon hose with the filter out put was awsome. Definitely going to use that. So glad I watched this video. Real don't know why I never thought of that 😅
I dangle the end of my siphon out of the window when doing water changes on my tanks. The plants in the flowerbed below the windows all always looking great.
Brilliant video Matt... Yes I use a bucket also, I have several actually and a Python, just depends on the Aquarium and location in my house... Much love and respect from South Texas... Cheers 🍻
I use a bucket in my sink to mix the water to the correct temperature and add the conditioner. I'm not strong enough to lift it, so I use a small pond pump and a hose to get the water from the bucket into my tanks. A bit cumbersome, but it gets the job done.
It's always great to look at your tanks, Matt. Thanks for sharing them. They are really looking fantastic! Thanks for sharing all of your tips and tricks as well. They're quite helpful. It's nice to have a platform to learn on, to share the knowledge we've picked up along the way with fellow 'TH-camrs' 🙂, and to be able to receive the wisdom from those who have been at it for a while. Thanks! Cheers, my friend! ~Ron
Your videos are amazing you cover everything in a realistic natural way. So easy to understand not complicated like some. Keep them coming I love them.
Having the same issue with hair algae with some of my tanks near the window, so hard to get out with baby shrimp chilling in it 😅 I love your videos, so chilled and down to earth
Here’s a little tip that I do to help my old brain - I have 3 tanks, and could never remember measurements of de-chlorination and fertilizer etc. when I first get a new bottle I work out the dosage and write them down on a small piece of paper for each tank and tape it to the side of the bottle. That way it’s a quick and safe way to dose the individual tanks 🇦🇺❤️
Great video Matt! And as others have said, it’s honest and down to earth advice; no pushy “you must do xyz” which is great I was going to get rid of some algae in my tank this week, but just remembered I’m away for 10 days in about 2 weeks time…. And it’s a shrimp tank, so it’ll just be extra food for them while I’m away. Got one of those “weekend feed blocks” for them too, hopefully it’ll be enough 🤞
Nice to see how other people do things! We are pretty similar in some ways, I use buckets and watering cans too. Thanks for showing is your tanks; they are looking lovely!
I picked up a pot of that mosaic plant about 10 meters away from MD at Aquashella. It's such a cool plant. I wasn't even in the market for a plant like that, but couldn't resist. Also, thanks for explaining how windows work. I'd been trying to figure that out for a while ;-)
@@FishShopMattI always recommended your channel for information when I worked at a pet store, you’re doing an incredible service for the youtube fish community with the amount of great education you give :)
That’s how windows work 🤣🤣🤣 have you told us what sponge you use to clean the glass on the inside of the tank? I don’t remember. Another interesting video!
i myself also water change with buckets, its just easier to maintain temperatures for me. only thing i can pick on is i like to put my bacteria straight into the tank rather than the bucket to prevent losing any of it as they stick to the bucket sides, but i fill from the bucket using a jug as im disabled so i fill slower than others. i do add the water conditioner to the bucket and then take a jug full of water and pour it back into the bucket to fully mix it up
Great to see the similarities and differences in tank maintenance-more similar than different which stands to reason since I’ve learned a good amount of my fish keeping from your videos! I always use buckets for my water changes and didn’t know that was considered odd or archaic by some--not that I would have cared 😂. I pour the water through a colander to disperse the flow since I need both hands to lift the bucket. Thanks for consistently great content and enjoyment!
we use a bucket too, also glad that i now know that windows let in light !😂 And Matt please can you do a video on what we can put in for botanicals that we have in our gardens ???
Hahaha you're welcome for the info on windows. Yes this is something I've looked at before, I think it will probably be an autumn job as that's when they're most abundant.
Hi Matt, I always enjoy watching your videos, gets my motivation up for cleaning my own tanks! I only have 2 40 gallon tanks but I'm struggling with beard algae in one and black algae in another. My plants always look so dirty and full of algae its very frustrating. I have tried dimming the lights, and shortening the time I have lights on. Also tried Seachem Excel and Flourish thinking this will help but it ended up making my fish sick, even though I was extremely careful with the dosing amounts. I'm using root tabs now for the stems but am still fighting algae 🙄🙄 The black algae is the worst, it completely covers everything in the tank, I'm beginning to think I need to start over with this one. Anyway I still haven't given up yet 😁🐠
Definitely don't give up. If nothing has changed the algae situation that you've tried so far. It may be worth looking at what's in the water you're using in your tank as sometimes tap water can bring in excess nutrients that cause algae. The other thing would be food, so how much and what quality, as poor quality food sometimes can't be digested by fish so they just end up fouling the water.
Great video! Definitely agree that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to aquarium maintenance...so many different variables and factors that come into play. Looking forward to the next video!
Bought myself a TMC Reef Pump Compact 350 nano punp which has made water changes a breeze , i have a 20l plastic container of water treated ready to go sit it on the floor take off lid and pop the pump through the neck and pump the water into the tank with no heavy lifting.
I use a bucket too! Easy to see what you take out and makes it easy to fill back the right amount of water too. I use 8mm lexan lids on my nano tanks, those allow me to put the bucket on top and siphon back the water in with a 8mm hose. I try to match the temperature by feel, but its always a bit off. Because it fills up slowly the heater picks the temperature difference. It also tends to disturb the aquarium less than dumping in the bucket of water😊
Great informative video Matt! What did you spray on the outside to clean the glass? I’m always afraid of contamination when spraying anything near my tanks.
It’s called body doubling. I get a lovely clean house if my mum calls because I clean while we chat, makes it more enjoyable or at least you don’t notice you are working. Wish I had a fish room.
Hi Matt! I'm curious to see how the Ludwigia sedioides does inside. I've only seen one person online keep it alive inside because of its light requirements and they had a crazy light.

Hello Matt! Im very much (an enthusiastic) newbie to the hobby...i have a planted 10 gallon tank with 2 male platies, numerous ramshorn and bladder snails with 5 amano shrimp and the recent addition of 5 little chilli Rasboras. Plants are lush and aquatic critters are thriving....my question (please dont laugh 😁) ....when i put the syphon in to clean up and do a water change, I'm scared the shrimp and little rasboras will get sucked up like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and die by my hand! 😱 They dont seem scared of the siphon....almost curious about it!
