SPC CLAIRVOYANCE:
The Storm Prediction Center nailed this forecast calling for possible significant tornadoes in Southern Oklahoma and along the Red River in North Texas this afternoon. Storms were predicted to initiate "on the I35 corridor" and under a blue sky, a tornado watch was issued over the dry line. At 3PM a lone blip cumulus tower appeared on GOES satellite imagery right on target and by 3:38 had already matured into a severe warned storm over I35. At around 4pm a non-tornado warned storm dropped a tornado. In less than an hour this storm transitioned from a puffy white cloud into an explosive tornadic supercell! A tornado warning was issued shortly after by 4:07pm but a man was killed in his home.
DIFFICULT CHASE TERRAIN:
Windy roads, hills and thick forests East of I35 make it very difficult to see and follow storms especially when they're cruising at over 50 knots as the crow flies. I was expecting fast cell motion and took advantage of an overlook to video the tornado. The cell motion was relatively slow at first. For about 10 minutes this dramatic tornado was ripping apart trees a quarter mile away from my perch. When the tornado crossed Indian Meridian Road, house and structure debris began to fly. You can see a house roof being lifted completely off the house before being tossed at a 40 degree angle into the air and obliterated a hundred feet off the ground and a large tree hovering above the ground for several seconds.
THE AFTERBURNER:
After the first tornado roped out, the storm cell hit the accelerator and began to process it's finale. Poor road networks forced me to do a highly dangerous chase maneuver called a hook slice where you drive through a blinding rear flank downdraft to view the beast. The motion of the mesocyclone was ridiculously fast in an End-of-the-world scene. Luckily this tornado traveled through mostly open country and earned a preliminary EF3 rating by the NWS. Unfortunately two people were killed in this tornado outbreak on May 9, 2016 but I was expecting way more carnage. Below is a link to the second mile wide tornado video...

It’s odd how they are beautiful and so damn frightening.
You know i said the same thing and people started calling me a karen. Cause im from cali but i live in TN so ive seen a tornado and first hand damage but sometimes when i watch the tornado starting to spin up it looks as id the different wind circling makes it look like they are dancing. Its so beautiful but so scary too. Just.like the fires in cali. In 2003 a fire was set by a road flare on purpose and we all had to scramble trying to save our house. It took 3 days but Thankfully it was put out. BUT..... At night sitting on my porch it looked like the entire sky was a giant painting with such bright vibrant colors cuz when you are in the middle of nowhere like copperopolis is you see the beauty without all the lights. So yeah i agree with you

Tornadoes are nit beautiful. They are destructive and frightening. Try riding them out and praying you don't die, having one hit close and many people die. They are not beautiful.

You are hands down the best at documenting these storms. You show us the beauty, the horror, and the sheer scale of a tornado better than anyone.
I absolutely LOVE how this video is, uncut, showing great footage, including the damage. You should really upload longer length videos of storms like this more often! Even more tame things like mesmerizing rotation or boiling clouds once the shelf moves over. It's extremely pleasing and mind boggling to watch air as a fluid.
Still in awe over this video. The rear inflow jet at 48 seconds then again at 1:02 is some of the best video I've seen of the rear inflow jet.

Tremendous videography, Hank. Man, you captured the essence of a tornado's destructive power. It honestly made me grieve for all the families whose homes and possibly lives were taken that day.
I wish all the amateur chasers would just watch and take notes on how Hank goes about his chases. He's always cognizant of other drivers, especially the police and EMS. He never flips out about a cop blocking off a road or trying to stop the amateur chasers from getting too close. He also never gets overly excited and ruins the video. He's a classy dude with the best shots. Gotta love him

Another curiosity is intensity of a tornado is not always linked to its size. A small slender tornado can be a monster.

I can not believe those people are setting there by the ball field watching that....if it would happen to change direction....cancel Christmas and kiss the baby goodbye...not too smart....but AWESOME footage.
I was there, we were about 1/2 mile away as the perspective in this makes it look closer. Also we were with Roger Hill who is one of the most respected Storm Chasers and he had already gotten the vans facing away so we could get away if needs be.

I'm so obsessed with tornado videos. It started with the one in the Ottawa region in Canada this fall. I watched some footage of it on youtube and the algorithm just sucked me into a vortex of obsession about tornadoes. If I ever go on roatrip in USA, Imma treat myself to some real tornado watching. From a respectful distance. With some of Hank's music in the background.

I'd say this is THE best tornado footage I've ever seen. It captures the tornado swirling rapidly and destroying things very clearly. In a lot of other uploads (please note, everyone, it's "a lot", not "alot") the tornado appears to be moving in slow motion. We know it's not but it seems to be rare for the camera to actually capture the true movement.
This is the exact tornado I would draw as a kid. When we think of the word “tornado”, this is the picture that pops into my head.

Good footage, I think the other chasers got way to close of this one, you have learned to stay your distance. It was changing directions and could have at any moment caught those other guys as nothing is 100% predictable.
Ive been through many hurricanes here in Florida and they still dont scare me like tornadoes do. I get chills just watching this video. Great camera work

+galerienature Its sony 24-240 lens that I'm learning to hate. $1000 bucks and changes focus when you zoom in or out... plus the sony aint an easy camera to focus on that digital screen... back to the drawing board.

This looks exactly like the only footage I've seen of the Oakfield tornado in Wisconsin but in 4k. Great video!
