Nice job on this video. Your description for the Chargers is only half right. While yes that it is true "Charge" yell. The other part of the naming comes from Barron Hilton. He loved the medieval sport of Jousting. So the name Chargers comes from the type of horse used in the sport. Charger. Refer to the original logo that depicts this horse.
My Godfather is from Dallas, his dad owned “Pyland Fries”- a stand outside of the Cotton Bowl, they would do basically a paper bag full of potato fries for a dollar.
Wait the Houston team considered calling themselves the Challengers? As in the Space Shuttle Challenger? Points for keeping the city naming theme, but jesus that's morbid.
That actually happens quite often… when the Raiders were still in Oakland, they played in the same stadium at the Athletics… And then there’s also like the MLS teams play in football stadiums like Atlanta United, or Seattle… Or NYC FC that plays at Yankee stadium! I think mainly stadiums are really expensive and some stadiums are only used like 10 times a year if they only have one tenant! So it just makes sense in some places to double up! Or in some cases like with Atlanta United it’s the same ownership that owns the stadium and both teams that play in it!

I’m not Indian I’m not from India I have no relatives from India Just because some explorer THOUGHT he landed in the WEST INDIES doesn’t mean he can just arbitrarily miss name an entire nation of people. I can’t sail to what I assume to be Japan, land in Cuba, and start calling everyone Japanese
Really interesting to see how many NFL team names were originally tied to their baseball counterparts. In addition to paying tribute to the team who they may have shared a stadium with, I wonder if that was also done to combat the perception that football was a “barbarian” sport in early 20th century society, while the perception of baseball had improved significantly to one of a more “classy” sport…especially after appointing a commissioner after the 1919 Black Sox scandal.
I hope the Jaguars go to a Super Bowl someday, along with the Browns, Lions, and Texans. I also hate the Falcons now that Belicheck took over as coach!
Good Question! I would guess that the most common reasons were they either shared facilities to begin with, they shared some amount of ownership at the time, or during the earlier years of the league, they wanted the credibility of being associated with already established sports teams in the city. I haven't looked at it too much, but those are the ideas that first come to mind as potential reasons! I'll have to do some reading!
So a lot of the reason why the original teams were based off of their baseball counterparts is because football wasn’t popular enough to hold its own games, so they would be opening acts for baseball games.
More teams! Team in. SD California. Team in SA Texas. Team in Portland Oregon. Team in Kentucky. Team in Virginia representing Virginia not DC. Second team in Chicago. Team in Oakland. Team in Oklahoma. 1 new team for each division.
The Frankfort Yellow Jackets have no relation to the Eagles. I have heard that the franchise that was the Yellow Jackets was sold to a new ownership group that became the Eagles; but they weren't the same team.
The Indianapolis Colts are not the same as the AAFC-NFL Colts. The original Colts failed after the 1950 season. The new Colts were founded in 1953 when Carroll Rosenbloom and others purchased the assets of the defunct Dallas Texans. The only thing the teams had in common was the name.
I get the Houston owner not wanting to reuse another horse image, but there are so many original names out there that would have fit for a team name with Houston's history. The Texans? That's almost as generic as The Washington Football Team waiting on a new name.
Thomas Hale Boggs Sr. was an American Democratic Party politician and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the House majority leader and a member of the Warren Commission. Wikipedia He sat on the committee that decided on the AFL-NFL merger and got New Orleans a franchise. We got a lot of streets named Saint, St. Charles Avenue St. Ann, Street, Saint Bernard Avenue St. Claude Avenue St. Louis Street St. Peter Street St. Philip Street
Washington Football Team is, was, and forever will be the greatest sports team name in history. There is no artifice, no pretension, just football. I sincerely LOVED that name. Nothing else can come close. "Commanders" is literally taken from The Handmaid's Tale, which actually suits Washington quite well these days... Card-Pitt is the second best name.
Houston Texans is what they agreed upon but Texas had cfl team need the San antonio Texans. also Washington named their team the commanders which again San Antonio had a team named the commanders front the usfl.

@@ColoradoSportsFan178 I truly believe they should still be the Redskins
I would have liked Houston Gamblers, which was the USFL team.
Ditto
Nice job on this video. Your description for the Chargers is only half right. While yes that it is true "Charge" yell. The other part of the naming comes from Barron Hilton. He loved the medieval sport of Jousting. So the name Chargers comes from the type of horse used in the sport. Charger.
Refer to the original logo that depicts this horse.
Nice Thanks for the context!
Also, founder Barron Hilton was involved in a new credit card business.
All the logos of the Browns....lol
Fun Fact: The Raven’s mascot Poe was also named after Edgar Allen Poe
Nice! Thanks for checking out the video!
I mean, that's a pretty obvious. It doesn't need to be explained.
I hope Washington goes with the name Renegades. The Washington Renegades makes sense and you get to keep the R and logo!
Renegades has a cool ring to it! I’ve also seen red-tails as a possibility for the Tuskegee Airmen, but just all rumor at this point!!
Funny now that they went with the Commies 😅😅

Still mad about the Colts...
My Godfather is from Dallas, his dad owned “Pyland Fries”- a stand outside of the Cotton Bowl, they would do basically a paper bag full of potato fries for a dollar.
Nice! My mom's side is mostly from the DFW area. Her grandfather owned a place called Sammy's BBQ if I remember correctly!
That so crazy how quickly Miami found success.
What’s even crazier is that they haven’t been able to find success again ever since.

Wait the Houston team considered calling themselves the Challengers?
As in the Space Shuttle Challenger? Points for keeping the city naming theme, but jesus that's morbid.
There's a reason you don't see teams called Titanics or Atomic Blast.
Houston Colt 45's has some ring to it
It honestly does!
The ravens was the original Cleveland Browns
Yup thanks for checking it out!

This guy sounds like Michael J Fox. That's not an insult or a compliment. Just an observation.
haha this is my favorite comment of all time! Love Michael J Fox!
I have always liked historical nicknames.
3:57 Why would Chicago Bears share Wrigley Field with Chicago Cubs if it's not a Football stadium it's a Baseball stadium.
@@JustinLearnsThings Ok. I have another question for you. When are you going to make a new educational video?
@@alexmorales1419 Yeah I'm working on a video right now of MLB Logos. My most recent video from January was about zip codes. If things go well on my schedule, I'll probably have another video like that one over the summer!
@@JustinLearnsThings Thank you so much. Schedule you say. Why don't you show me the schedule please?
You said you will have a new video over the summer you say? Why can't you upload educational videos daily or ever 2 days or every 3 days or... Once a week. I prefer you uploading educational videos daily so the more videos you have the more fun it will be.
It's a good thing that the Arizona Football Cardinals & the New York Football Giants are still in the NFL.
🙌
The raiders didnt fail to gain a foothold in LA. The issue was NFL had TV blackout rules if you didnt sell out your home games and Raiders played in dilapidated Coliseum with 100,000 seats that could never sell out when most stadiums had 65-70k seats
The way I heard it was the bugle at Dodger stadium that led to the naming of Chargers
Houston toros sounds cool. Texans doesn’t do it for me personally
I like the Roughnecks. I agree, the Texans name makes sense, but it just doesn't feel right for some reason. It hasn't since day 1.

But everyone is different
Just because I’m Cherokee/black doesn’t mean I speak for all of us
But here is my PERSONAL opinion
I never understood why I can be referred to as black, or white, but not red? If you saw me in real life you wouldn’t immediately recognize me as black, or native. Red never bothered me nor redskin
BUT THATS JUST ME
However
Don’t call me an Indian.

I’m not from India
I have no relatives from India
Just because some explorer THOUGHT he landed in the WEST INDIES doesn’t mean he can just arbitrarily miss name an entire nation of people.
I can’t sail to what I assume to be Japan, land in Cuba, and start calling everyone Japanese
Thanks for sharing man!! Yeah I will have to be ready for an update video for sure!
Yeah really interesting how teams were tied together like that!
I hope the Jaguars go to a Super Bowl someday, along with the Browns, Lions, and Texans. I also hate the Falcons now that Belicheck took over as coach!
Why are so many of these teams former names meant to match thier cities MLB teams?
Good Question! I would guess that the most common reasons were they either shared facilities to begin with, they shared some amount of ownership at the time, or during the earlier years of the league, they wanted the credibility of being associated with already established sports teams in the city. I haven't looked at it too much, but those are the ideas that first come to mind as potential reasons! I'll have to do some reading!
@@JustinLearnsThings Well thanks for giving me a few reasons!
My grandfather designed the original Atlanta design. I have the initial design and interaction with the owner
Dang that’s really cool!!
You messed up the Ravens/Browns thing.
So a lot of the reason why the original teams were based off of their baseball counterparts is because football wasn’t popular enough to hold its own games, so they would be opening acts for baseball games.
Could you do nhl soon
Definitely! Shooting for the start of the NHL season!
NHL video went live today!
The NFL needs to expand again soon. Two more teams: St Louis and wait for it...........

Who are the jag-wires?
$100 to buy the Bears? I wonder how much $100 was back in 1921. Obviously not as close as an NFL franchise costs.
Looks like it was around 1,615.13, so definitely not that much by comparison!
According to George Halas, no one ever paid the $100 entry fee.
@@tygrkhat4087 GH was a corrupt Chicago big shot.
Wow $100 us in the early 1900's buys alot back then
I know right!
That was less than a Ford Model T!
You can call the Washington team; the red commandos. The Eagles were also called the Frankfurt yellow jackets.
The Frankfort Yellow Jackets have no relation to the Eagles. I have heard that the franchise that was the Yellow Jackets was sold to a new ownership group that became the Eagles; but they weren't the same team.
There are 3 teams from the old AAFC that still exist, the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and the San Francisco 49ers.
Jaguars and Texans are the only teams to never change stadiums, every other team moved at least once.
Ann, Street, Saint Bernard Avenue
St. Claude Avenue
St. Louis Street
St. Peter Street
St. Philip Street
It’s really interesting how big of role he played in shaping football!
So the LA chargers are the first football team founded in LA, aka the true LA team
Haha true!
The only original LA teams are the Chargers, Kings and Angels. The Angels play in Anaheim, and the rest of the LA teams came from elsewhere.
@@tygrkhat4087 Orginaly the Kings played in Inglewood but now play in LA proper. The Angels used to play in LA proper but moved to Anaheim.
