Some updates for 2021: -An Extra game has been added to the NFL Schedule, moving the count of games in a season up to 17. -The opponent is determined by taking a random division from the opposing conference that the team is not already playing, and then pitting them against someone who finished in the same spot in the division as them. In the case of this hypothetical Cleveland Browns squad, they would play the New York Giants. -Because of this, the regular season extends to 18 weeks and doesn't conclude until early January. -Due to this change, a seventh seed has been added to the playoff structure, increasing the amount of playoff teams to 14, and eliminating the first-round bye for the second seed. -This means that, during the NFL draft, the number of non-playoff draft picks has decreased to 18, while the number of wild card draft picks has increased to 6. -In 2021, a new rule was implemented where, should a minority in the front office be hired to another team as a head coach or general manager, the original team is awarded a third round pick the current and following years.
Had to look up that last one since I haven't heard of it and thought it was a political joke. Do you know if they're taking away picks elsewhere to compensate for gaining picks in the 3rd or are these like expansion picks?
@@carsausage I guess it does create incentive. Though I do think it isn't the best method for inequality. This has the potential to create massive loopholes on draft night with random hirings/firings at the last moment

I came here as a non-american who reads a lot of highschool books set in the U.S. wanting to understand what the writers were talking about. Even though I still have yet to enjoy the game as americans do, I certainly now understand how it's a big deal, and the fame and money players can earn off it. Definitely helped to give me much more context when reading, as well as understand what's going on. I've watched a lot of videos trying to learn about american football and this is one of the best and only ones I have seen which explains the nfl as a whole, rather than just the game.
Thanks for the kinda words and for watching! I’m happy and glad that the video was able to help you. Pick a team to follow and enjoy watching the upcoming season!! You rock!
@@LurksLessons I have a question. If the superbowl is in February. And next season begins in September, what do people watch in between all that time. I'm from UK and people seem depressed when football (soccer for you) season is over. But here fans only need to wait 2 months or so.
Solid question @MrWatchme1989. For the regular sports enthusiast, you have other sports to watch like the NBA, MLS and MLB during that time. But for the diehard NFL/NCAA Football fan, that’s when they’ll follow or watch the off-season Free Agency signings, the Draft, and eventually the beginning of practice for the next season. Because of the long periods of time in between seasons is another factor as to why American football fans are glued to the TV every weekend. It’s crazy!! 🏈😎
@@LurksLessons thank you for the quick response. Us UK people don't really follow American sports but I wanted to try playing madden this year. Soon realised American football is so damn exciting. I'm trying to follow this season every week hopefully. I still can't imagine how fans can go 7 months without the game being on. That's just too long of a wait for me personally even with transfers and drafts happening in between. Follow up questions. What do players do in that time? Continue practicing or go on holiday? I know you said right before season begins they begin practice but I'm asking about between Feb to August. Do they still have to turn up for training or anything or are they on vacation? In football (soccer), the off season begins in june and new season begins mid August. Players usually go on holiday and get some rest. But every 2 years there are international tournaments such as the world Cup or the continental Cup. So they don't hav too long to be on vacation. So pretty much all year long they are training and playing.
That’s awesome! Best of luck in following the season and in playing Madden!! It’s true that the off season is a touch longer than other sports, but for players they do pretty much whatever they want in the months following up to the new season. However, most players if not all have strength/conditioning/skill set drills that they do on their free time. So even though they don’t have mandatory meetups until July, all NFL players do train all year long. Also, the nature of the sport does a lot of damage to the body that others use the off-season to heal and rehab. Finally,, there’s been multiple attempts here in the US to have a spring pro league for players to play in due to the long NFL off season. The last three attempts have failed, with the most recent being this year (the XFL) due to the pandemic.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm from the UK and a TV channel is now showing the NFL so without videos like this it's very difficult to know what's going on if you haven't grown up with the sport. The fixture lists seems incredibly complicated though. I do like the idea of each team having a salary cap and first draft picks going to the worst teams. It seems that would make games more even. Football/soccer in Europe has tried to introduce "financial fair play" so teams like Chelsea and Manchester City can't just buy up all the best players because they are owned by billionaires.
Thanks for the kind words @radius one and for watching! Yeah it can get complicated but I think it's the NFL's way of attempting to make the league as fair as possible with the draft order, salary cap and free agency. One thing I do like about football in Europe is that teams have to "play-in" to be in the Premiere league, to hold their elite status of play. Who knows, maybe the NFL will follow suit in the future with that structure. 🤔

I’m from South Africa and looking to get into watching American football. This video is very good at explaining the intricacies. Hopefully I catch the nfl bug
This is a great quality video and easy to understand for an Aussie, I highly recommend looking into the Australian Football League, aussie rules football. A reaction video or video about the AFL would be entertaining. I may seem bias in saying it but it’s an elite sport that doesn’t get virtually any worldwide credit. Although it has been gaining some traction recently thanks to Pat McAfee.
This is great and thanks for the compliment! I agree in that the sport needs more exposure and would love to dive into that league in the future. Thanks for the tip!
Hey man, this is a really good video. The presentation is professional as hell, and it's easy to see how much effort you put in. It's also (obviously) super informative; I've been around football my whole life, but never really understood much beyond the rules, until now. You should definitely make more 101s for other sports when you have the time 👉
Man thank you so much for the kind words! Doing more Sports 101 videos is definitely in the playbook later this year for I really enjoy creating those. I'm almost done with my independent film and when it's complete, I plan on knocking more videos out for the channel. Stay tuned!
Thanks! I hope this video helped explain at least the basics on how the league operates to better understand a season of the NFL. Currently working on the sport itself so stay tuned!
Thank you for the kind compliment and you're totally right, I did an update on the scheduling change but not the playoff layout. Maybe this year I can get an update out? Who knows :) Regardless, thanks for watching and for the heads up! You ROCK!
From India, Mostly a cricket, rugby & football fan (Hate the word soccer) and last few days all those Super Bowl videos made me curious and then this video appeared on my timeline, Good learn and am starting to like ‘American football’ ✌🏽
I already knew something, having watched NFL for a few years, but there were some organizational things I wanted to clarify and your video did a wonderful job.
Appreciate you sharing this for that's the heart of the channel: for people to learn new things when it comes to sports or from the professional leagues the sport is played in! You rock!
I can't believe there are no more videos in this serie! I was looking for the Guide to MLB video. I think that if you create more Guides for all sports, your channel will have a huge boost.
You are totally on point! There is definitely a series in production right now and I hope to get the next Sports 101 out before Thanksgiving. Still wrapping up a massive personal project and can't wait to get a new video out. Thanks for watching and stay tuned!!
Great video. The only thing I feel is missing is that you kinda need to explain how the play starts with a snap and what offsides and neutral zone infractions are. And how only certain people on the offense can run or catch the ball. The big lineman can't advance the ball in most situations. Lineman can only block. Running backs, wide receivers and quarterbacks can advance the ball. Also the tight end who is basically a big lineman that can also catch passes.
Great suggestion and keen eye! I purposefully chose not include the positions and their role on the field because I'll be explaining them in the next upcoming Sports 101 video, Guide to American Football, which is currently in production. It was hard to not include it in this video, but in the end my focus was solely on how the NFL operated and worked for fans to understand the League better. Don't know if it was the right choice or not, but I'm excited to complete the next video. Thanks again for the suggestion, you rock!
@@LurksLessons , I want to ask you a question about the NFL Ventures, Some guy here in California sell jerseys for the Rams with their Logo, and personalizes them with people's names and their number of Choice. Say Lurks - 17(if that is your choice) - isn't he going to run into problems with the NFL? His is a personal side design business n he's making lot$ of money.
Great question! Short answer is YES because he doesn't own the licensure of the Rams in order to use their logo and monetize off of it without the written consent of the NFL. Unfortunately though, A LOT of people still do this without receiving a cease and desist notice because I would imagine it's hard for the NFL to police it throughout the country. I can't say that he will be fined and or sued, but I can say confidently that it's illegal. If he has the legal authority from the NFL to use the logo/colors then it's a legit business.
@@LurksLessons , wow how does he get away with it? So it's criminal to make jersey of Blue and Yellow coz i see many Rams Fans donning his jerseys on games with personalized numbers n names. Really NFL has all rights over who uses the colors - say Yellow and Blue ? Coz he doesn't see it like it's illegal
When it comes to Logos, yes it’s illegal. But colors is different. I don’t know why personally but if a teams colors is different because you’re right, there’s a lot of ppl doing custom jerseys with the teams colors BUT aren’t using the logo. That’s probably how they’re getting around it 😎

I’m from South Africa and looking to get into watching American football. This video is very good at explaining the intricacies. Hopefully I catch the nfl bug
I know nothing about this sport. This is a great help. Next the rules, watch a few games pick my team.
dont pick any NFC south team for your sanity.
Raiders
@@devinwarren6723 haha. Noted. Will stay well clear.
Thank you for Jordan Mailata! -an eagles fan
Despite me knowing damn near everything about football, I always find myself coming back to this video. Probably because of the production value.
Stay tuned!
British guy who recently started watching some NFL games, awesome video!
Thanks! I hope this video helped explain at least the basics on how the league operates to better understand a season of the NFL. Currently working on the sport itself so stay tuned!
the best explanation ever thanks a lot
I am from Canada and have been a Carolina Panthers fan since 2011
This video is told in a none patronising presentation, thank you for this, very clear and educational information
Happy you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching, you rock!
I gotta say I came here because I was confused about the scheduling in the nfl, but now I’ve learned a lot thanks 🙏
You bet Wolf Man, I'm happy that you enjoyed it and learned something new!
This is so well done. You should make one for the NBA, MLB, etc.
Thanks Scott! Yep, that's my plan is to do the rest of the leagues for sure. Hopefully soon!
You deserve a prosperous career, Clear example of abysmally small channel making god-tier videos
You're exceptionally kind! Appreciate the support and for watching, you ROCK! 😎
Astonish, the most underrated channel on TH-cam.
A MLB and NBA 101 would be amazing
Thks for the Video.
This dude did an amazing job with this. Just have to update it to the 2021 schedule changes
Good video from Nairobi, Kenya. I am a noob at NFL and your video has helped me, i still don't even have a favourite team.
Choose Philadelphia Eagles. Everyone says we’re the best fan base😂
This was very helpful because I watch the nba regularly and want to watch the nfl
I already knew something, having watched NFL for a few years, but there were some organizational things I wanted to clarify and your video did a wonderful job.
Appreciate you sharing this for that's the heart of the channel: for people to learn new things when it comes to sports or from the professional leagues the sport is played in! You rock!
Thank you! Very informative & contains info that helps. 😁
You are so welcome!
This is insane....Everything is well explained!!! Thanks.
Happy you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kind remarks.
That’s probably how they’re getting around it 😎
Yoo how the heck do you not have more views and subs? This video is high quality, I’m subscribing!
Thanks for the kind words and support! You rock!! 😎👍
What a great video! Great animation& Precise short narration! I am a first generation immigrant living in the U.S and wanted to familiarize my self with the NFL; this is the best video to give me a general grasp! Can you do one for the NBA and NBL?
Thank you for the kind words and for watching! I definitely intend to do one for the NBA and the game of basketball this year so stay tuned for those videos. You rock!
I’ve been a diehard nfl fan for awhile now and this is surprisingly accurate!
This video is phenomenal! The only thing that they need to change is the new schedule format to include that 17th game. Other than that it's brilliant
Phenomenal video!! Should've gotten far more attention!
Thanks for the kind words!
Great video. I'm not a complete stranger to the NFL, and had guessed some things from being an NBA fan, but as a european who pretty much only watches the Super Bowl I definitely learned some things here :)
That's awesome to hear! Thanks for watching and for sharing, you ROCK! 😎
Very high quality vid with such few subscribers :/ Great Vid 👍🏻
Appreciate the kind words and for watching 😎
5 year update: there are 18 weeks now with 17 played games in the season, and 3 preseason games instead of 4 now
Super informative, thank you. I've always only casually watched and want to have a greater understanding.
I am new fan. I found this video helpful.
Great video! This was great to watch and very helpful.
The only thing I don’t understand is how they determine who’s higher on the ladder if they’re tied with the same amount of wins and losses
Fantastic question! Best answer I have for you is to check out the NFL website which goes into great detail in how they do break the tie = operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-tie-breaking-procedures/
watching this before the draft
3:20 CMIIW but I believe there are 14 teams in the playoff with the number 1 seed from each conference get a bye in the wildcard round
Hey Lurks, thanks for the Vid. I really enjoyed it. I was wondering if you could maybe post your sources because I’m currently working on a project about the NFL and I still lack some sources. Keep up the good work !
Wow thank you very much for the info. Im not a fan of football but lately I've been bothered by all the news and decides to learn and understand it. Thanks to this, im done with that. I'll just pick my team and im ready to watch ;)
Great animation bro! This video is underrated.
Amazing video, thanks for the help!
This is so complicated but interesting coming from a football fan (Soccer)
Underrated creator, keep up the good work 😀
Great presentation! Only missed on explaining playoff seeding. Overall an excellent presentation of how the NFL works.
Thanks for watching and I'm happy you enjoyed it! I'm a little confused though on your suggestion because I go in detail about the Playoffs and how the teams are seeded at the 03:11 mark. Does that help?
How does this video not have 5 million views?
Maybe in 2029? It's all good though, happy you think it should have that many :)
@@LurksLessonsmaybe you can update this excellent video
Thank so much for this elaborate explanation
Glad it was helpful! I hope you learned something new and thanks for watching!
