A mate of mine who was an excellent drummer came to mine and hadn't played for a while and jumped on my kit and proceeded to play a few megadeth tracks with only one hand cos he didn't want to put his beer down and then claimed to be rusty. I was furious at him wasting his talent and not being in bands anymore.

Honestly. I tried to teach someone that, he couldn't do it at all. I told him precisely the drums, the order, the rhythm. I told him everything and he just didn't understand. I remember my first drum lesson, I did it in like a minute and my teacher was like, "You've not played before right?" Point is. Some people are just slow learners and if they like their little rock beat then leave em to it aha.

@@PutonyourSundayBests you're right it does seem I'm implying the obvious. So okay for someone who hasn't played for a while, he has a light touch, ghost notes on the snare, playing with complexity and exhibiting contrasting dynamics. You can tell that he had composed actual parts for the tunes in his last band. not play typical 8th note pattern here, fill here, 8th note pattern again, fill 2 here etc.
He is not doing what I see a lot of people do when they haven't played for a while, hit too hard, choking the sound of the drums, really unstable time etc.

I reckon that anyone who learns an instrument but doesn't keep it up will still maintain what they had learned, but won't get any better if they don't improve. So while James might struggle to remember some of what he knew, he was obviously a decent drummer before he stopped doing it regularly, but it just hasn't got any better. Nevertheless, he remembered what he did learn

@space egg The video title emphasizes the phrase "impressive drumming skills". They are not impressive drumming skills. As a longtime drummer, I can tell you this is very much the end of the story. There's really no point to polluting the world with more expectation of mediocrity, so let's quit the bullshit.

Needs work but has a basic groove but if you have not played for a while crossovers are not the best way to start. Maybe some blues in 12/8 to blow the cobwebs away.
