AN UNBELIEVABLE SIGHT MESSERSCHMITT ME262 LANDS AT RAF CONINGSBY WITH P-51 & SPITFIRE FROM RIAT 2023

  • An unbelievable moment as a Messerschmitt Me262 lands at RAF Coningsby. The flight, callsign 'Merlin' consisted of various vintage aircraft that departed RAF Fairford for RIAT 2023. After the Me262, a P-51 Mustang and a Rolls Royce Spitfire completed the flight. They are expected to be at Coningsby for the next few days.
    The Messerschmitt Me 262, nicknamed Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") in fighter versions, or Sturmvogel (German: "Storm Bird") in fighter-bomber versions, is a fighter aircraft and fighter-bomber that was designed and produced by the German aircraft manufacturer Messerschmitt. It was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft.
    The design of what would become the Me 262 started in April 1939, before the Second World War. It made its maiden flight on 18 April 1941 with a piston engine, and its first jet-powered flight on 18 July 1942. Progress was delayed by problems with engines, metallurgy and interference from politics. Some wanted the Me 262 to be a ground-attack/bomber aircraft rather than a defensive interceptor, thus necessitating a redesign. The aircraft became operational with the Luftwaffe in mid-1944. The Me 262 was faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter, including the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor, which was introduced in 1944. The Allies countered by attacking the aircraft on the ground and during takeoff and landing.
    As one of the most advanced Second World War combat aircraft, the Me 262 operated as a light bomber, reconnaissance, and experimental night fighter. The Me 262 proved to be an effective dogfighter against Allied fighters - German pilots claimed 542 Allied aircraft shot down, although higher claims have sometimes been made. The aircraft had reliability problems because of strategic materials shortages and design compromises with its Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojet engines. Late-war Allied attacks on fuel supplies also reduced the aircraft's effectiveness. Armament production within Germany was focused on more easily manufactured aircraft. Ultimately, the Me 262 had little effect on the course of the war because of its late introduction and the small numbers that entered service.

    Great to the ME262 in the air. Seeing one of the first and the latest combat jets shows how far combat aircraft have changed over time. Now imagine the ME262 against a Typhoon would be a bit of a miss match but would be great to see.

      Are we talking jet Typhoon jet or piston-engined Typhoon?
      Pilots who flew the 262 regarded the Tempest as their most dangerous opponent, being very fast and well-armed. The Tempest could out-accelerate a 262 because the jet engines took time to spool-up. The 262 had a higher top speed, but in every other regard the Tempest could kick the sheet out of a 262. Historians have examined the kill ratios of fighters of that era. The 262 had a kills to losses ratio of 1.5 : 1, but the Tempest had a kills to losses ratio of 7 : 1.

      +@petefroehling8704 The GE engines have about 40% more power, but they operate them in a power band to equal the original Jumos. The extra power is there, but it can create some unsafe flying scenarios - single-engine out for example with little time for the pilot to react. The GE's can put the new Me-262s into the 600+ mph range (645 mph max if I recall) which is also not recommended per the airworthiness notes.

      Specific tactic by mustang and thunderbolts to attack at most vulnerable and slowest. Also tempests used but mainly USAAF. As they protected bomber streams and interjected airfields. 1944 saw a policy of active destruction of fighters

      Hawker Tempests shot down Me262 when they were coming into land, a practice called "rat catching" as mentioned in Pierre Clostermann's 2 books. This came to an end though, when the Nazis set up anti aircraft guns at the 262's airfields.

    • @wanderschlosser1857
      @wanderschlosser1857 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@phillipbanes5484Seems you don't know much about the 262. It wasn't a circling dogfighter but it was a formidable air superiority fighter. If used correctly, no piston fighter had a chance to shoot it down due to its speed. That's why the allied tactic was to hunt them around their airfields when they were most vulnerable. The few shot down in actual fighter to fighter air combat happened when inexperienced pilots let themselves get involved into dogfights. Or they were slowed down due to engine failures or other damages. The 262 airframe was miles ahead any Allied aircraft. The engines although very advanced in technology were troublesome for many reasons and the only real problem of the 262. Missing airbrakes was possibly another flaw in the design.

      @@FiveCentsPlease I visited the shop twice while they were under construction. The second visit I took my father(RIP) who was a WW2 8th Air Force veteran. He almost never spoke of what he experienced during the war. He told the few staff present that during the last weeks of the fighting he was at freshly overrun airbases (in Germany I assume), that had many abandoned or wrecked German planes strewn about the field. Amongst them were several Me-262's, Dornier 335's, and other jets as well (Arado 234?, Heinkel 162?, Me163 rockets?) He said he was mostly interested in the jets, as he was a specialist propeller mechanic, and wondered how they worked without propellers. He spent quite some time inspecting the 262's, and the 335 with a prop on each end got some attention as well.
