Wow! 1 day already digging in----I like the wood accent on the front of the radio, and all that talk about lifting one leg- until we meet again, DD21

From a practical perspective, there's little point in altering a 40+ year old CB radio, even for SSB.
For you folks new to SSB, ever since the Yaesu FT-101 and Tempo One came out serious operators have used amateur radio rigs on CB. That's been about 50 years now.
Fast-forward to today, take a casual listen on 38 lower, and you'll hear "7300" over and over again. Read up on the Icom IC-7300, then call up DX Engineering and whip out that credit card. You'll be glad you did. Leave the antiques for nostalgia.
Here's a tip: when you buy an old rig like this and have it open, tighten the screws that hold the PC board to the metal chassis. I did this once to fix a nasty squeal in a Realistic TRC-459 I own.

My only argument is the 7300 isnt all that great on am.
      I prefer am on 11m.
But to each their own. Either way, 7300 is a real nice all around radio.

From a practical perspective, there's little point in wasting $1300 on a radio that won't sound as good on AM as this TRC-449.
Here's a tip: Buy any old CB radio at a yard sale for $5, then have fun modding it yourself and enjoy talking on it and be proud of the work you've done. And don't use credit cards, that's just dumb.

Thank you for the basic clarifier mod. Saved me time figuring it out. Awesome video. The images at the end showed the exact locations without any doubt.

I've got an early President Grant with a variant of this mod. D30 is missing and R119 has been moved to the other side of the board between D32/r117 and the junction of R166/R169 for 9.26 volts. It's 6 volts on the D32/R117 side. The rest of the wires all still in their original places it appears. But, it's unlocked. This makes for a slide of about 2khz up and 3.5down. It gets a bit more unstable at the lower end of the range. I got it this way and was looking into removing it but after aligning the radio it's not half bad. It's clever and minimally invasive. It's about the only mod I find worthwhile, for convenience in a QSO with more than two people. I found your video in the process of trying to figure out what was done. Though you might be interested to hear about it. Thanks for sharing.

    Good stuff.
Like how that RS rig is full of Uniden parts and old cobra knobs!
I have a GE radio w/858 chip. It's already channel'd and with audio.

Don't think GE ever did an UDP858, at least in SSB. GE did the A &,B model, and the Superbase base station which were all PLL02a Cybernet pll chassis.

One of the best looking and performing radios...there is the AUSTRALIAN TRC449 that has flat brushed aluminium look instead of the polished chrome.

Nice, I love these and the Madison 858's. I do the mod similar, and yes, centered and only a couple kc up n down, it makes the radios a pleasure to use. Oh ya, and 2.5 watt key with about 13 pep max

    Great video!
I know it wouldn't be "Stock" or "Factory", but the next thing I would do is change the LSB and USB front panel LEDS, to green blue or amber, something other than red for SSB, I just think it would look cool, and you would know at a glance what mode you are in.. Thanks again for the great videos!!! 👍

I've still got an unmodded President Washington relay clunker, 2 button, with UPD858 pll chip, still works great, and in almost perfect condition. I'm guessing it's from the late 70's/early 80's. I considered doing some mods to it years ago when I was more into tinkering, but glad I didn't get too tempted, it's probably getting quite collectable nowadays. I have a Uniden Washington 3 button MB8719 with a digi scan, which covers any fun I may want to have. Also got a couple of MB8719 based Uniden Grant XL's I used to use a mobiles, one completely stock, the other has a 3 toggle switch mod, and unlocked clarifier (they're the Black Grant XL's, same layout as MB8719 Cobra 148GTL) amongst several other unmodded radios, silver Uniden Grant, AX144, 8719 based Cobra 148GTL, Stalker 9 etc etc....You're right, it's a sickness🤣👍🇦🇺

That 1st version Washington had a better RX (IMO) glad you kept her stock. I got over that whole modified radio thing when the Super Star3900 came out. If I needed xtra ch's I would use a 3900. Like keeping these rigs stock. Except for unlocked clarifier. Cheers to you Mate:)

Why do you put so much emphasis on the "L" in solder?
It's like the Family Guy "Cool Whip" episode.
    Soul-derr ?

    • @390WagonMaster
      @390WagonMaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Cause that is the way its spelled. A few years back I made some videos and pronounced it sodder and caught shit for that, so now when i do a video I pronounce it correctly, with a slight bit of exaggeration.:) Honestly, I have been saying sodder since I was a kid. Cheers

@@390WagonMaster LoL. I was just joking. I'm from NYC and it's "Yo, gimme da freakin' sodder."
IDK, I don't pronounce the "k" in knife, the "p" in pterodactyl, the "b" in climb or comb .... But I give your video two thumbs (with emphasis on the "b") up anyway.

@@390WagonMaster from the Oxford collegiate dictionary:

So according to the Oxford collegiate dictionary, the L is silent.
      Webster's dictionary:

Both say that the proper pronunciation is without the "L" sound. 🤷🏻

@@390WagonMaster Plus it good for the algorithm to have more comments.
Just to add to the subject, the Oxford, Collins and Websters online dictionaries have that little speaker icon that allows you to click and hear the proper pronunciation of a word. All three say that "sodder" is indeed the correct English pronunciation (the 'L' is silent)

I will never understand why anyone would want to put a slider in a CB. As soon as you have to use the clarifier to compensate for someone who's off freq, you end up putting yourself off freq. It just makes no sense as a mod.
