  • CELTA (the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) started life in the 1960s. Although it has been revised and formalised since then, its essential principles, content and course components remain largely unchanged. This talk considers the extent to which CELTA maintains its relevance as a teaching qualification in the 21st century. Presented by Clare Harrison.

Doing the CELTA was the turning point in my career as an ELT professional. After I did it, I felt I owed it to my students. The key strength of CELTA, from my perspective, is its rigorous 6 hour teaching practice component and assisted-lesson planning. A highly qualified and experienced tutor sits in your lessons and gives you detailed feedback about every minute of your classroom teaching time, the decisions you made and the materials you used/adapted or designed. That's why CELTA was life-changing !

My CELTA course was pretty old fashioned in its methodology so I am glad they are finally updating it. Hallejulah!
