Great video. Thank you for the tips. I love fishing. My husband recommended I try tying flies since I love doing crafts. Learned that this is more of an art than a craft. So much to learn. Looking forward to trying my hand at it!
Love the shoutout to Davy Wooten! His video Midge Magic is a classic. All I've been tying lately are Soft Hackles and this awesome video pops up. Thanks for the feather tips as well.
I like the way you use those longer soft hackle feathers for tying a soft hackle/wetfly. A lot of tiers videos show them using always a short, stubby soft hackle feather. It allows you to add a thicker longer feather collar and also allows you to use more feathers on your partridge skin inwhich aren’t very cheap. Great video!
Great Fly! A few years ago i started tying a couple of wet flies. I wanted to have a better looking alternative to fish waters with no, or almost no, current. As they turned out to be super effective, i started to use them more and more. And tied more and more of them. A simple pattern with a peacock body and a sparse black softhackle in front is one of my favourite pattern now. Easy to tie, only 2 (3 with metallic rib) materials and a super good look underwater. U should try that, if u haven´t allready.
I had a friend that was butchering chickens a few years ago. He gave me 10 skins and after I processed 5 of them I think I have a lifetime supply of soft hackle. Unfortunately they are all the same rusty brown color but they're great for crayfish patterns among other stuff. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
I just came from Made to Cast... I watched this and the Buck tail tip video and already learned more than I ever knew. (which wasn't much) but this is making me want to try tying again. Can't wait to watch and learn some more.
Favorite team of softies: Guide’s Choice Hare’s Ear Soft Hackle, Pheasant Tail Soft hackle, followed by either a Davy’s Spider or Stewart’s Spider. Caddis, mayfly and midge in one swing of deliciously offered goodness. One of my other favorite softies: Barr’s Graphic Caddis in either tan or olive. I’d bet it would do well as an October Caddis pattern too.
Fantastic video! Love soft hackles and wet flies. I to am a Davy Wotton fan, I have several of his DVDs and I watch them all the time. Stoked to get a care package from you!! Thanks!
Great video Brian. These type of fly's are my favorite for Blue Gill here in southern IL. It's just like you said you can spank fish them. Thank's Again.
Thank you for the demonstrations. I especially liked the method you shared on determining if the feather is a good candidate for a soft hackle. I’m going to use that method my next trip to Bob Marriott’s here in Southern California. Thanks again, Tom
Soft hackles are like a super fly secret. I never trout nymph without one on the line somewhere. Have caught more trout on soft hackles than on anything else.
Awesome video, thanks Brian, it gave me an idea to use soft hackle for pressured steelhead small tributaries of the Great Lakes.( Lake Ontario) & to use bright colours built for steelhead, pink, chart, orange. Thank I will keep you posted to my success 🤙👊
My name is Freddy and I'm a soft hackle junkie... of sorts! Great video - thanks for sharing! Webby rules.... just sayin'. Found the video though a link from Frankenfly (thanks go there too)!
It's obvious you love fishing and tying. I think you would be a great guy to spend a day on the water with. Went through the dry flys time, they are way easy to tie and fish not to mention much less expensive. Now it's just streamers for me if I get one fish in a week it's been good. 25 years ago I took my wife on trip to Montana, on the last day we were in Yellowstone Park.Saw a fish we couldn't catch so we ask our guide to have a go. When he caught, it the left side of his jaw was hangin on by a thread. It changed the way I thought about fishing. I fish barb less so the fish can get off with minimal tissue damage. I think If I can get him to bite that's what I'm after. How many fish caught on a barb and released live? Just saying what about our grand kids?
Starlings have great soft hackle feathers. You need the tiny ones. Get out your bb gun. I am also partial to the peacock, so I hang around petting zoos with my kids and have a friend who has a few peacocks on the farm and isn't too proud to save me a few. You got to have it from your friends. Also, I think you are overdressing it. I only ever put on 2 or 3 wraps. You have something like 10. I can't even tell for sure. I always thought they were supposed to imitate legs, so like Marshall McLuhan said, less is more. No mutant centipede.

It’s nice to soft hackle again. These were used for years and many newer fishers have no idea of how effective they still are.
Just got back from fishing Eastern Sierra's. Soft hackles were the trick for goldens. I like the video as always. Thanks for showing the difference.
Great. Opened my eyes about soft hackles. Likes the short tutorial of the wet fly. Greetz from Germany!

Gotta confess I’ve never fished a soft hackle (still a noob) but I think I’m gonna try it out on my next outing.
Great looking fly. Can't wait to tie some up and give em a try.

Beautiful fly and great soft hackle tips!
Good video on soft hackles. I haven't fished many wet flies but seeing this changed my mind about that.
I always revert to a soft hackle when the fishing is tough, they have saved many a day for me anytime of the year. Nice video Brian.
Very helpful. Soft hackles seem so simple but to really make them nice and not too full takes some practice.

Davy Wotton! Now that's a neighbor I'd like to have. If his DVD could talk it would probably say, "Hey knucklehead! You're wearing me out!"
I'd like to try larger soft hackles for river smallmouth. They aren't picky and like stuff in the swing
Very effective when used at the right time, thanks for the info!

Soft hackles work great on the white river
I don’t fish wet flies often, but there certain time/place/hatches where it can be a fun and very effective way to fish.
Great looking fly
Simple but effective fly. Would be nice for imitating a green caddis.
Been a while I’ll have to tie some again
Ps, I love how trout usually “hammer” a soft hackle as it swings across the stream, BAM!!!
Absolutely stunning how long did it take you to to get to a level of showing off your flys that you have tied

Not living your right life is quite right when referring to not having tried fishing with soft hackles. Right? Definitely a good topic.
Thanks, awesome video!!
Enjoyed the video
Why haven’t I gotten around to trying soft hackles??? I probably should fix that…
Any tips for when your partridge skin smells so bad you can’t stand to take it out of the bag it came in?
It probably wasn't cured like it should have been.....once they go bad, I don't think there is a way to bring them back.👎
Love your vid

What would you think for color for steel head in northeast ohio
very nice..💯🎣🐟
Cool 😎
A wet fly is just a dry fly with webby hackle. 😮
Why would NOT fish a soft hackle??? When the fish (pick a species), do 90+% of their caloric intake beneath
the surface???
Damn it, I never win haha.
