    I have been tying the same fly for years, but I have never used or considered a dubbing loop. Personally, using good hares ears, brushed out works very well and saves the aggrevation of the loop. Just my opinion after 20 years of tying this pattern.

    Your description sounds like the Mother's Day Caddis hatch I caught outside Cody (Shoshone R.). The surface of the water was solid with bugs. My lab was covered in fluttering insects (as was I), but the fish stayed under the surface. Anyone who has seen a full blown hatch out west, where bugs block out the sun, will attest to the reason why those same fish get to the size they do.
