You are an excellent teacher. I mostly euro-nymph/tightline-nymph but I am psyched to get out and give this a try!

Thank you excellent overview. I’ve found that I hook and get to fight more fish by keeping my rod tip parallel to the water surface so there is a gentle curve from rod tip to water surface and keep my reel drag just tight enough to prevent the reel spinning freely. When the sought after tug occurs there is enough give in the system for the fish to hook itself and not break off as easily. I’ve also learned to “finish” the cast. When the fly completes its swim and is holding directly downstream in the current allow it to dangle for a few second then use a slow hand twist retrieve. This results in many takes that would otherwise be missed. Thanks again for this presentation.

Simon, as an experienced fly fisherman I'm LOVING the new series. This video shows me yet another way to present soft hackles (I normally put one submerged about 2' behind a dry). Curious that you don't discuss strip setting (the hook); it's what I do to (hopefully) increase positive hookups, which can be a challenge with these flies. Please keep this series going 🙃☮

I fish spider fly's in the local lake and catch the biggest trout every year around here. 8 to 10lb. every year.

Excellent informational video Simon 👍🎣👍, plus reminding me to. Check my fly boxes, that i replies sentence Flys i lost last year 😡 🎣👍. Back in the 80s we would use a match stick ( twist & looped) as a indicated. Way be4 indicates we're invited, or we would use lambs wool.

I am going to use spiders on lakes too, Bob, what retrieve do you use?

I troll all my 5wt. line out and 20' more. Dead slow rod in holder. The 5 size12 swivels in the leader stop line twist from so many spinning fish. Kind of a Chrono troll in a way. Anyways it's about 20' deep. Fish the whole lake as the really big ones are loners. Sounds weird I know but it works says the guy whom put in 200 days from pre-dawn until 1 or 2 pm. Just saying.

Soft hackle means wet fly fishing?
