    I'm a shift worker, and I'm always looking for a new way to get a caffeine buzz. I heard mate is pretty carinated, so I ordered a bag of mate on eBay. I didn't know what to do with it, so I went to find a TH-cam video. As I was watching your video, I realized it was you that I ordered my mate from! I'm going to go give this a try now. Thanks for the mate and the video!

    I’ve been drinking Yerba tea for over 10 years and each time I drink it I feel uplifted, calm, clear headed, confidence and have mental clarity. I LOVE this tea. Please be aware that it’s an acquired taste if it’s your first time, so I suggest adding a teaspoon of honey to combat the bitter taste. Oh yeh, I simply use a cafetiere to filter it. Enjoy! 

    • @lucasmissingbass
      @lucasmissingbass 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@montyblum5922 actually the cancer risks are related to yerba mate but not for the infusion by it self, but due to the temperature of the water. When you sip a beverage through a Straw (bombilla) you drink it faster, and when you are used to the temperature you are vulnerable to burn your stomach, and that's when you have more risk of cancer

    Hi, drinking mate this way is also traditional in southamerica, it has a different name, its called "mate cocido".. and has a very interesting variation called "cocido quemado" where you burn a little bit of brown sugar and yerba before putting hot water in it, the flavor is much stronger in "cocido quemado".

    Hey, Dave, gracias, mi amigo. Because of your enthusiasm about yerba mate, I started drinking it about a year ago and now, I will never go a day without a nice cup of mate. The comments section of youtube isn't big enough to list the great things this "tea" does for me. My health has completely changed for the better. All the different brands and concoctions and ways to brew this stuff make it an absolute joy. Keep spreading the word. The sad part is how little our human brothers and sisters in certain countries know about yerba mate. Everyone in the world should drink it, every day. If they did, it would put hospitals out of business and cancer would be a thing of the past. (And your Mission variety is one of my favorites, dude. An excellent yerba mate.)

    With coffee, when you finish pressing it, you are best to decant all of it immediately to minimize bitterness as the hot water continues to act on the plant matter after pressing, removing excessive tannins from the grounds. Albeit slightly less so, this seems to be true to my palate with Yerba Mate as well. Just another consideration to anyone French pressing it. :-)

    What you are doing, in Uruguay we call, mate cocido. And the old way to do it (my mom style), she would warm up water, as you said, without boiling, to the temperature of drinking it, she would turn of the fire, add the yerba mate, mix it until it soaked in and then drain it with a colander and a very thin piece of cloth, so no yerba goes thru. After that she would add some sugar and put it in the fridge to cool off. She would serve it with some ice, and use is as a fresh drink, we were kids and used to drink it all the time!

    That is call "mate cocido". The method is valid. One trick you also can try. Boil water 100 degree, put yerba mate as much as you want. Boil it 10 second and off the stove. Just wait 5 minute and the yerba mate will naturally go down without press. Testy with milk and little sugar.

    All that fuss just to make mate cocido. I'm a yanqui who lived in Argentina for a long, long time. You can also boil water in a saucepan, throw some mate in and stir it until you get the color (strength) you want. It only takes a minute. When you take it off the heat, add a little slosh of cold water. It stops the 'cooking" and makes the leaves sink to the bottom. Then pour it and drink it. You can add sugar and/or milk if you like. Or, if you're really in a hurry/lazy, get mate en saquitos (mate in bags) and make it in a cup like tea with a tea bag.

    If you just made your yerba mate with the french press (using fresh herbs) and you would like to reuse the yerba mate to make another batch, but you are not going to make another batch immediately (maybe a few hours later), how would you store the yerba mate (I.E. open container, air tight container, etc...) (I can't keep mine in the french press because it is stainless steel)? Also, is there a time frame the used batch of yerba mate should be used within (I.E. after a day the old batch should be discarded and a fresh batch of yerba mate should be used in the french press)?

      @CasualDude Hi mate ! .....
      Cruz de Malta is a milder flavour and smoked , (to dry it), I believe , with the plant twigs still in!
      I use Kraus Pure Leaf Organic too - this is more green in the cup but it will definitely be more nutritional ! .... More bitter too.
      I've recently started to mix both of these products 50/50 and I feel like I've hit the nail on the head ! Perfect balance 🍵😎 I usually use about 5 tea bags of peppermint tea , I only using the contents of the tea bags and disguard the 'paper'. It's just my personal preference. Sometimes Melissa plant too - it tastes like lemon grass!
      I prefer to use 3 scoops / tbsp of Yerba per litre , then I chuck the leaves out unless I'm going to do a refill within the same day , I'll use the same leaves again but with another 3 scoops of Yerba also.
      Kraus Pure Leaf ( organic ) is much stronger / bitter than the weaker Cruz de Malta, hope that you find your happy medium and enjoy The Drink of The Gods 👍

    Can you add more mate and make a condensed version? I'd like to make 1 gallon worth of mate, can that be done in 1 pressing or should I do more?

    how do you get that extentsion on the end of the plunger? my bodum doesnt have that... seems like it makes a big difference, as it doesn not reach reach far enough to press the mate..

      Brazilian style Erva Matè ( powdered Matè) won't work in a French Press as it blocks the holes & French Press won't press down - I've tried !

    I learned to drink both mate cocido and tereré when I was in Paraguay. Tereré is mate made with cold water. What I like to do is make mate cocido in my French press and then chill it in the fridge. It's the perfect thing for when it is baking hot outside.

    How would vigorously stirring effect it adversely? Oh and how long does it stay good after a brew and how many brews from a press?

    • @TuathaDeDanannQ1
      @TuathaDeDanannQ1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      KC, why not stir it? Don't know. But, it stays good for a very long time after brewing. Like, several days. The yerba settles to the bottom but it's still good. I get two good presses from yerba before is starts to lose flavor.

  • @damonopz

    Rather than “heaping teaspoon,” a better measurement for reference would be a tablespoon. the amount in each spoon is surely more than 2 teaspoons, but it looks close to one tablespoon.

    That plastic thing below the metal part of the press. What is it called and where do I get it? I have a bodum too, but it only has the metal part, and doesnt go down to the bottom. So when i make the mate it only strains out the water, I cant actually press it to get all the water out of the wet leaves. Maybe you cant just buy that one part by itself, so telling me the model of your french press would help me too.
