    I love the way you sounded on the Cannonball! Very clear and yes bright. It would cut through a band on stage as a soloist. But it was rich at the same time.
    I would love to hear you play it after you had it for a week and you felt comfortable with it.

    It's like magic, how P. Mauriat can round out those tone holes.

    • @ngtamphuong
      @ngtamphuong 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Rolled tone holes bring more troubles than benefits. Almost no pros in the tone, the feel, but it's much easier to have sticky pads and if they're warped it's very hard to level them.

I own a cannonball if someone use to play like a Yani, selmer... or even the P Mauriat... you will feel a little uncomfortable for a while but after that you'll be great... Hey Jay, love all your vids bud! a big fan too
    It's strange, this video just popped up and I checked the date you uploaded it. Wow,,, what a crazy moment i just had....what I'm getting too is that
    Thought it was time to upgrade.
    Yamaha yas25 was my current sax at the time.
    I visited the London Sax store last early October(great service) and tried quite afew Alto's. Loved the P.Mauriat 67R DK!! Infact I couldn't make up my mind after that walked away and returned a week later narrowed it down to 3 Altos. The P.Mauriat was the one that caught my heart. So I purchased it and that is me Today.....
    Now looking at this Video, I can see that you played and tested the exact Alto sax that I purchased, reason I say that is bcause the store only had one in stock when I was there and looking at the Abalony cut shell on the keys....its the exact same pattern marking of the shell cuts on the keys that match the one I bought. The pattern on these shells are very rare to be found exact.... as I looked at afew others when I was back at the store and they are different.
    I'm very proud to say that you played my P.Mauriat Alto Sax 😊😁👍🏽. Also that makes me so happy now to play my sax knowing a Idol of mine has played it 🤭👌. What a coincidence...crazy! That is Awesome 🎉

      Try them and let the sax choose you

    • @improvsax
      @improvsax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, try as many as you can and see.
      For me, recording each horn and listening back allowed me to see how they really sound. What you hear is not what an audience member hears- too much sound through bone in your head, plus perspective.
      I had a really nice MK VI, I got a Ref 36 and played them both a bunch- recorded. For me, the 36 just plain sounded better, was in better tune and still ‘felt’ much the same in key layout. The 36 has a HUGE bottom end.
      But if I was playing loud, rock bands or the like, the VI would have been better- brighter and cuts more. But what I play I like the big round sound a lot more. (Sold the VI and kept the 36)
      Maybe take one of those little ‘Zoom’ recorders so you can play it back?

    Come on over to the P. Mauriat family, Jay! If you like the 67R you'd LOVE the 67RX. My preferences in your video were: P. Mauriat > Cannonball > Eastman > Yani.

    I've been playing the Sax for 40 years and now have 7, all of which I love.
    Having watched many of your videos and of course listening, to my ear regardless as to which of the 4 saxophones you played you sounded like you.
    For me, I have chosen my 7 saxophones simply on how they feel to me in my hands and whether I play my Martin Magna, my Yamaha Custom 875EX, or my Keilwerth etcI (to my ear) always (as others lso say) sound like me.
    The Sax I tend to play the most is my Eastman 52nd St as 1) it's less precious and 2) it just feels great in my hands>
    Keep up the good work

I was choosing between the P. Mauriat 67R and a Yanagisawa AWO1 an AWO2 and ended up with the AWO2 as I love the feel, response, rich warm sound and good projection of the bronze Yani over the others.

    They all sounded GREAT! It is becoming apparent, the purchase of a new sax is down to; how does it feel playing it, appearance and price. I’ve been playing a MarkVI tenor I bought new in high school (feel free to do the math and guess my age). After shopping for about 2 years I decided on a Mauriat 76. The local repair guy is a dealer and ordered one. He made me “a deal I couldn’t refuse”. I get a thrill every time I open the case and get it out to play. Sure I would have the same with a new Selmer or any number of new horns today. But it came down to price, playability (I previously played a 66 in his shop), service, local dealer, and appearance (love the dark lacquer finish). I’ve had my VI, ‘59 Buffet SDA and the new Mauriat all out. Side by side, if there is a difference in the sound it is negligible. The SDA is a heavy horn, the VI has the typical key noise and issues associated with a horn well played for nearly 50 years. The Mauriat has me falling in love with playing all over again.

    Very good presentation in seamless sound, great way to hear the bright, dark, evenness between the notes, depth in the sound, weight and ergonomics. To me the Eastman sounded the best. It had the most center off all the other horns and more depth in the sound. Also, you didn't mention the weight. IMHO, the Eastman is the closest weight to a Mark 6 of all the horns. Also again, IMHO has the best ergonomics of all those horns coming from a Mark 6 player.

    From my own experience, it can be very overwhelming going into a place with such a selection available. I dont know how to narrow them down necessarily, but i would suggest not more than like 3 to 5 horns for testing. It's really easy to keep them all straight if there are more than that. Jay, i think your testing only is about perfect. I would imagine a person could sit down with 4 and eliminate possibly some entirely but otherwise it may be hard to pick between so many.

    Soundwise I felt like the Eastman and Cannonball were the extremes, the Eastman seemed very round and darker and the Cannonball had a definite edge none of the others had. I think if you're trying a sax you should take your favorite mouthpiece because though the differences are small, I could see it tilted your sound.

      I'm a 2 month alto student using a rental Yamaha YAS23 & I don't like the ergonomics & lower keys are stiff granted it is a student horn. Would u recommend switching to a different make/model I can play all 12 scales so I'm beyond basic fingers & use lip out Embrouchure

      @@jackcraven7979 I would recommend taking lessons and have someone check your posture, especially at two months in. Get the horn inspected as well if the keys are indeed stiff. That's not something typical even on a student horn.

      @@bettersax Hey Jay. I've been playing on the horn for over a week now. It's a fantastic horn. Thank you for making this happen.

    Thanks. It would have been nice to add a Selmer in the mix. Folks in London don't have it? Come to Paris!

    New alto with F# coming… yeah! It’d be awesome in the brushed raw finish like the P Mauriat 😁

    Great video! I'm looking for a new alto that this definitely helps. I'm partial to the P. Mauriat and the Cannonball: maybe it's the big bell?

    When I was buying a nice horn for college I remember trying out the cannonballs, I was sketched out by all the gimmicks they have, but dang they looked good. I mean SO many gimmicky claims. They sanded the bend in the neck for air flow, silver copper voodoo, using actual random stones placed all over to help resonance. I bought a Yamaha.

    • @bettersax
      @bettersax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that the gimmicks are a turn off. But some people like a flashy horn.

    It is easier to take the time to watch a shorter video like this vs. the longer ones. Not that your longer ones are bad in any way. It is just a time thing. How much time do I have when you release a new video to watch it. I may come back to it later or I may just never end up watching it. I am more likely to watch a shorter video. Thank you for your channel! :-)

    Hi Jay, very interesting video about the alto sax. This store in England is simply "crazy". Please do the same type of video about tenor sax. Thanks a lot !!!

    Nice video Jay! I like very much the SAX UK Store. One question: If I travel to the US, where I can find a store similar to this one, where I can see and try a lot of differents sax?

    The Yanagisawa WO1 for sure. I’ll take a Japanese or French sax 🎷 over the others any day, but I’m biased since I play Yanagisawa. 😂

    Thank you for the video... personally I really loved your playing and felt the Eastman brought out more of the complex dynamics you hear from a Mark 6. And by the way, may I ask what you use for your videos? Camera Body, Lens, Aputure, all that good stuff...are you using the mic built in? Videos and sounds looking and sounding stellar^^

    The silver finish always makes the horn sound brighter. It's like tone wood for the sax.

    Enjoyed this video...the quick hit on a narrow topic, (comparing sound on four popular horns) was easy to watch, informative, and fun to watch. Even on computer speakers the difference in sound was surprising.

    I've tried most of these. I opted for a Selmer Ref54 in the end though. I've never felt too at home with Yani horns. There's nothing wrong per se, just not for me. The Cannonball is such fun for soul and more commercial styles. Just wasn't what I was looking for at the time (Although I definitely spent a while screaming some altissimo while the store was doing a last check over of the one I'd chosen).
