The scene where the teacher tells young Malcolm that he should be a carpenter hits close to home. My father, who graduated from Washington High in San Francisco with a 4.0 GPA asked his favorite teacher for a recommendation letter while applying to his dream school which was Stanford. His teacher told him "Donald, you're obviously a gifted student and excellent with numbers, but it would be in your best interest to focus on a trade. Carpentry is a great profession and one you'd excel at." Insulted and taken aback, he asked a different teacher for a recommendation letter and was later accepted. He completed his degree in mechanical engineering and graduated Stanford U with honors.

I applaud this choice, I haven't seen it in a long while. I read his autobiography (written by Alex Haley somehow) and it stuck with me. I was drawn to Malcolm's presumption of equality as a starting point, he wasn't going begging on his knees for what should have belonged to him from the day of his birth. I preferred his approach to Martin Luther King's.
It was a refreshing look at the life of black Americans, what they have to endure, the biased treatment by the police and courts and prisons. It also illustrates the problem of religion, how it's used to control people, how people use it to gain power, how power corrupts. I don't believe in any deities or religions, they're all man-made. We need to treat each other as we'd want to be treated, with respect and dignity. Celebrate our differences instead of passing legislation against them.

I will say truthfully I didn't expect you two to review this movie. Not that I'm not happy about it, but this movie is definitely a raw telling of the life of El-Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Yeah, the final scene, which portrays his assassination does not shield you. The man was shot 21 times, including 10 buckshot wounds from the shotgun which tore through his aorta. Not only that, he was shot in front of his wife, who was actually pregnant at the time and his three girls. And to this day, there are still unanswered questions about the assassination, just recently two of the convictions of the alleged killers were vacated and we're now learning that the FBI was indeed involved in Malcolm X's assassination.
I thank you for this. There are so many films that are overlooked I feel and need to be tackled by everyone. I put this up there with Schindlers List as a film that must be watched for greater understanding of the history of our world.

This movie literally Changed my Entire Life! I had just recovered from a Life altering Motorcycle Wreck and was beginning my Christian walk as a new Convert.. I got Active duty assignments overseas to Korea, my homeland where I was orphaned at the age of three. in the Air Force. While over at Osan, AFB I went to go see this movie.. after it moved me so much I wanted to know everything about this man and real life. I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X , so along with Denzel's Oscar worthy Portrayal of the Great Black Prince.. It sealed the deal for me! I wanted to become a Minister. I shortly out-processed out of the Military after that tour and went immediately to Bible College in Florida. Where I honed my craft and oratorical abilities and like Malcolm I preached.. it was who I wanted to be and become... To this very day... the Spirit of Malcolm lives inside my heart.. and I will preach like him once again..

it warms my heart that W students brought this reaction to TH-cam. info: speaking at the end of the film was actor, and friend of Malcolm X, Ossie Davis, and those words were his own and the eulogy at Malcolm's funeral. there are documentaries about him that give more information about his murder, and a 60 Minutes interview by Mike Wallace with Malcolm's daughter and Minister Louis Farakhan that is a must see. Not covered in this film is the fact that it was Malcolm X who brought Muhammad Ali into the Nation of Islam. Ali eventually turned on Malcolm after his split with the Nation- which he later regretted. there is so much more to the story of his life. of note, it was Alex Haley who wrote the Autobiography of Malcolm X. Haley came to national fame as the author of Roots, and greater acclaim when it was made into a TV mini-series which brought home for the first time the truth and horror of slavery in the United States into American consciousness. all are well worth your time if you want to flesh out your understanding of Malcolm's life, and death.

TBH I never knew much about Malcom X. I never really hear about him when I was in school. MLKL on the other hand we learned a lot about. Is there not a lot about him because he was controversial or something? Like I know the Black Panthers almost are never talked about because of their militant/aggreesive nature. Which to some degree is ironic given the fact other groups like the KKK are miltant and aggressive also.

    • @glyyytch

This surprises me to be honest. When I was in high school (more than 20 years ago now) we learned about Malcolm X alongside MLK when learning about the Civil Rights era of American History. We also learned quite a bit about the Black Panthers. Interestingly enough, we learned more about Malcolm X, MLK, and the Black Panthers and the contributions of all three in the Civil Rights era than we ever talked about the KKK throughout the entirety of American History. This was in a deeply conservative state (in the US) as well, which seem to have a reputation for poorly covering topics like this.

The "militant" black people of the civil rights movement are NEVER mentioned because they upset the "natural order" of those in power. Malcolm and the Black Panthers spoke about "by any means necessary", which meant they would defend themselves and their people against the same violence and hate that continued in our society.
I always found it funny that if you were a black person whom believed in taking your rights back by force, the government and the media would try to destroy your credibility and your name.

@@erauprcwa Agreed. On reflection, I feel like 'by any means necessary'
isn't an inflammatory stance. "Any means" includes discussion, and rational consideration and cooperation....but that interpretation was never considiered, and so he was deemed a 'militant radical.'

Respect for choosing this movie. Its not a complete bio as there is some unflattering things left out that wasn't flattering like most bio turned to movies. This is why its easy to like you guys as you have the stones to watch a lot most are to afraid to react to.

I haven't even started watching your reaction, and I have to take some time to compliment you both for your film choices, and ultimately, for who you are. I am absolutely NOT calling any other reactors racist, and I know that they probably all have good hearts in the right place. Still, the movies being reacted to seem to range from Friends to The Brady Bunch as far as black actors are concerned. Other reactors feel like good people, but you now feel like friends. Thank you for making me feel the way I do about you.

Spike Lee's character is loosely based off of comedian Redd Foxx, who knew Malcolm in the 40's in Chicago. He was known as Chicago Red, before he moved to California.

This movie is based on the book called The Autobiography of Malcolm X & another book. Malcolm hired author Alex Haley to Write his book from his own words. Alex Haley wrote the book Roots which was made into a movie & became a cultural phenomenon in the early 70's.

In high school we all learned more about Martin Luther King more than Malcolm X obviously because they paint Malcolm X and such a negative way but me how I always and I mean always give Malcolm X's love and respect in his flowers because he spoke the real truth that black people needed to hear it and still to this day need to hear his agenda and his agenda alone will help black people in a tremendous way

The eulogy was read at the end by Ozzie Davis, for the first time since he read it at Malcolm's funeral.
When the film was released, it wasn't widely known that Nelson Mandela had been released from prison.
Mandela's appearance on screen produced an audible gasp from the audience.

Thank you for this reaction. I saw this in the cinema, Sydney Australia back in 92/93. The movie follows quite closely to the autobiography/ posthumous biography by Malcolm and Alex Haley. I sat there sobbing like a child during his eulogy, especially at seeing Nelson Mandela.

Newer subscriber here that’s been catching up on older content. One of the only things that can be almost as interested, sad and tragic as the end of Malcom X life is the investigation of his assassination. Three men were arrested and sentenced to life in prison. One of them who confessed insisted the other two weren’t involved and those two were later released and exonerated which means that 2 shooters were never caught. The one that admitted his role has never disclosed his associates and was eventually paroled and is still alive at 83.

That “get the movie pregnant” thing has been around a while. It’s a regular tactic throughout movie history. When “Titanic” was going way over budget the studio kept trying to stop James Cameron but he hadn’t shot the boat sinking yet. One meeting he allegedly lost his shit and said, “Okay, let’s stop shooting now. You’ll have the most expensive movie ever made and it’ll be about an uneventful voyage across the Atlantic. Good idea, guys!” Obviously the execs who tried to rein him in had very different stories once the movie made all the money. Spike Lee didn’t have the track record that would encourage a studio take that kind of gamble on him, unfortunately.

I love this film; and because my folks had his autobiography(as told to Alex Haley) in our house forever, was that much more impressed by how well Spike Lee did. When it came out, I took Mom( now of beloved memory)to see it, and we were the only white faces in the crowd. My only regret with the movie was that more of Malcolm's pilgrimage to Mecca wasn't shown. At that time, he'd actually been detained by authorities: very courteous and curious; largely because while they had heard of him they wanted to make sure of his faith and intentions.

So I’m not necessarily a fan of all your videos or all your takes.
But kudos to you for reacting to a great film from a great director that has been painfully neglected by most of the movie reactors.
Kudos to you for stepping outside the echo chamber of movie reactions and not just aping other channels and chasing the algorithm.
There’s such a vast world of cinema, refreshing to seemovie reactions separate from all the other channels reacting to all the same handful of movies.

      I'm curious:
Exactly WHAT makes a person "brave"...for watching a movie?
      "Curious", perhaps. But, "brave"?
      I don't know.
Perhaps your definition of the word
"brave" differs from mine a bit.
But regardless...I'd really like to know what's "brave" about watching a movie in the comfort of your own home; with no one else around.
Is it the same as the kind of "bravery" possesed by those unarmed people who, (years ago) put on their Sunday best...and went out into the streets to confront armed, hostile police during the sixties?
I'm just curious to know how watching a movie can be considered to be an act of "bravery".
      Thanks!

Nice reaction. Most were unaware that the reason he is Chicago Red was because at that time he was friends with Redd Foxx (Sandford and son). They robbed people together for short time. Redd decided to be a comedian.
